Abreu trade "unlikely"
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 04:31 PM) But then you have the exact same problem you have now, a player who doesn't fit your contention window who you'll likely have to trade to get pieces that will help the rebuild. By 2020, Bradley is a 30 year old CF in the final year of arbitration who might have lost some of his defensive value and may not have recovered any of his value with the bat. He's then a free agent in 2021. The only way he makes sense as part of an Abreu trade is if you believe his defensive value will hold into his mid 30s and you sign an extension with him immediately after the trade. He does for at least one season if not 2. Th fact is, if he bounces back to his 2016 level, you could get a ton for him in a year. The White Sox have always been quite fond of him. It is interesting Jose Contreras has been added to help Latin players assimilate. Maybe he will be more geared toward minor leaguers, or maybe they are preparing to fill the void Abreu would leave behind.

Abreu trade "unlikely"
QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 04:22 PM) Just curious: How much do you think JBJ would cost, if he were a free agent? Same question for Abreu. The problem with JBJ is his agent. Boras. But he will make significantly less than Abreu in 2018, and 2019. That is money that can go elsewhere or saved in the piggy bank to use when it is time to win. It may be that we are all nuts and Neither Dombrowski or Hahn would be interested in such a swap.

Abreu trade "unlikely"
The last 3 seasons Abreu has put up a combined 9.1 WAR. JBJ, 10.5. JBJ is cheaper and signed a year longer, and plays gold glove defense at a premium position. Normally, you would do this trade if it were available, 1 for 1, but if Abreu's leadership, something Hahn said is big, but won't trump production, and JBJ, taking a little step back offensevily last season, gets you another interesting prospect, you do it in a heartbeat. Bring Jose back in 2 years if he is still productive.

2017-2018 MLB player movement rumors and reports
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 02:38 PM) Jerry CrasnickVerified account @jcrasnick 35m35 minutes ago The #Royals have let teams know reliever Joakim Soria is available. He’ll make $9 million next year, and they’d like to move some money. Jason Hammel could also be available in trade. Like Soria, he’s signed for $9 million in 2018. I wonder if the White Sox will let teams know James Shields is available. The Royals can't possibly think other teams thought these guys were untouchable could they?

White Sox Winter Meetings Preview
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 01:41 PM) Yeah, it's true to say what the article said - none of the OD 2017 bullpen will be available to open 2018. Has there been an update? According to this, Jones is supposed to be ready for spring training. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0713-story.html

White Sox Winter Meetings Preview
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 12:41 PM) The fact that we have zero members of the 2017 opening day bullpen on the 40 man roster today is mind blowing. It would be if it were true.

Winter Meetings 2017
I think this is going to be a slow week all around. Not many FA have signed. They really should back these meetings up month or so, and maybe provide some incentive for teams and free agents to sign sooner. Maybe make the compensation lower for the tendered guys the earlier they sign. They could still hold the job fair.

Brewers Reportedly Shopping OF’ers
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 09:28 AM) Apparently haha I don't see the fit either. Fulmer beat SF, Det. And a Cleveland team that already clinched. The Sox bullpen pitched 4 hitless innimgs the game vs. Cleveland. Carson has some ability, but I think people taking his September starts as meaning much is crazy.

Brewers Reportedly Shopping OF’ers
There is no way the Sox could get Bronson for Fulmer. 2 or 3 meaningless starts ago, Carson Fulmer was the biggest bust of the Hahn era. Now he can be used to acquire top 30 prospects?

2017-2018 NHL discussion thread
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 08:57 AM) They are getting more than enough shots every night though. Statistically I am not sure there is much that supports "lack of energy" unless I am missing something. They are losing, therefore everything looks worse.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
One thing the Trumps are about is the truth. Like Jr. and his meeting about Russian adoption. And father Donald doesn't want Mueller looking at his finances. He might make up that Trump isn't worth $10 billion and might be short on the American thing to do and pay your taxes. Donald Trump is a God fearing patriot. Perhaps the greatest human ever. And his spawn are geniuses who just want to help their country. Why it can't be like Fox and Friendsa and the rest of the media have their collective tongues up anything Teumps asses is beyond me.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (Tony @ Dec 10, 2017 -> 12:59 PM) When the President of the United States tweeted out a CONFIRMED fake video, the White House responded with “Whether it is a real video, the threat is real...that is what the President is talking about” Weird that the White House seems to pick and choose outrage over “fake news” Plus Trump is a big fan of Alex Jones. So fake news is pretty funny coming out of his mouth. His schtick is to accuse others of doing what he is doing, taking the attention off his lies and inaccuracies, and putting them on what he considers his opposition. It is amazing how many look the other way. He even has his s hills doing this. Hannity ranted how Obama was obsessed with Teump. Like nobody notices it is the other way around.

Yankees shopping Clint Frazier
i am pretty sure if you offered Hahn Frazier for Cordell straight up he would think you need rehab, and would let you know as soon as the paperwork was complete.

Winter Meetings 2017
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 9, 2017 -> 05:20 PM) And bullpen arms can be so volitale, you could sign a stud reliever this off-season and he might be worthless when the Sox are trying to compete in 2020. I read an article that stated bullpen pitchers' performance isbecoming a little more consistent. The belief is that guys are being groomed to be relievers far sooner than ever before.

Giancarlo Stanton traded to Yankees
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 9, 2017 -> 03:49 PM) Especially since the options were limited due to contract and no-trade clause. Literally only 4 teams. Yes. They told him if he didn't agree to a trade, they were going full rebuild. He still said no the SF and STL. He held all the cards. They needed to get rid of his contract, so he told them where he would go. To think a team that owes a player almost $300 million, holds a player with a full no trade over a barrel, is hysterical. Especially if he can opt out in a couple of years.

Giancarlo Stanton traded to Yankees
The last time a team led the league in HRs and then added the player that led the league in HRs was 1919 when the Yankees bought Babe Ruth.

Giancarlo Stanton traded to Yankees
QUOTE (oldsox @ Dec 9, 2017 -> 02:02 PM) Not saying Jeter is on the take, but this trade is bad for baseball for several reasons. Freaking Yankees. It was bad enough when they ripped us off in the Frazier, Robertson, Kahnle trade. This one takes the cake. The problem is the Marlins can't afford hom, and they are limited in where thy can trade him. They had no leverage. Plus it is a contract very few teams would take. It all adds up to, if you can take on a lot of money, you can improve your talent level. Hopefully in a year or 2, the White Sox can partake in a trade like this. There is still a lot of risk the Yankees are taking on. There are only a few who can do it to this level.

Giancarlo Stanton traded to Yankees
Money is the key to winning. Taking on contracts, signing players to huge ones, being able to absorbed a mistake or 2. This Yankees deal is a no brainer. They don't give up much, so even if Stanton opts out, it still makes a ton of sense. If he doesn't opt out, they get $30 million from Miami. Sanchez, Judge, and Stanton is quite the middle of the order. The new international rules will help even out those signings. The draft is now pretty fair. So if you do things right, you could be good for a couple of years, but sustained winning requires spending a lot of money.

Giancarlo Stanton traded to Yankees
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 9, 2017 -> 09:49 AM) Honest question, but can the Cubs actually add him and stay below the 2019 luxury tax threshold of $206M? The Cubs have nearly $100M committed to six players already (Lester, Quintana, Chatwood, Rizzo, Zobrist, Heyward). Bryant, Russell, & Hendricks will be in their second year of arbitration. Baez & Schwarber will be in their first year of arbitration. Let’s just hypothetically say those five guys earn a combined $40M. That basically puts them at $140M give or take for eleven guys. Even with Contreras & Happ still dirt cheap, they’d have roughly $67M to add Harper and fill all their remaining holes and quite frankly there are quite a few on the pitching side. Unless they’re willing to blow through the luxury tax, I just don’t see how they make Harper’s potential $40M AAV fit into their payroll. I don't think paying a luxury tax kills them initially. What might is a couple years down the road when everyone has to get paid, but by then, a few will weed themselves out, and Theo will probably trade a couple. The Cubs are buying up the area around them. Their new station is going to be interesting. Although they are so beloved, so are the Dodgers and a lot of LA couldn't watch them. Signing Harper might be something they need to strengthen their position with cable and satellite providers to carry their channel.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 5, 2017 -> 01:22 PM) Longenhagen said the bat looks a lot slower now than it did when he signed. Not saying I don't wish we had him, but I can get down with not ruining next years plans to give him $2mm+ as a solid call. Sox couldn't give him $2 million if they wanted. They only have a $300k limit per next year.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 5, 2017 -> 01:20 PM) WaPo: A special counsel needs to investigate the FBI and Justice Department. Now. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/a-s...m=.0d8cbe887fca From the wiki page of the author: Hewitt participated in several of the 2016 Republican primary debates, where he clashed with Donald Trump.[20][21] In February 2016, Hewitt wrote that, despite being repeatedly publicly insulted by Trump, he would support him should he become the Republican nominee for President.[22] In June 2016, after Trump's controversial remarks concerning Judge Gonzalo Curiel, Hewitt publicly called on the RNC to disendorse Trump as nominee. A week later, Hewitt reversed his position.[23] On August 3, he publicly floated the idea of replacing Donald with Ivanka Trump on the ticket.[24] On October 8, he called on Trump to drop out of the race because of a controversial recording of Trump that was published the previous day.[25] Hewitt ultimately voted for Trump.[26]

If you had to trade either Avi or Jose....
Avi seems to me to be a guy who will really slow up running as he approaches 30. It seems it happens to the bigger guys who can run a bit earlier. But trading either guy all depends on the return. If other teams aren't going to pay for last year's production, there is no need to give them away, and Hahn won't.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 5, 2017 -> 08:41 AM) The Trump administration is proposing a rule that would effectively allow restaurant owners to steal tips from servers: Fun thing I learned recently: it's generally legal for management to keep anything left in tip jars on the counter, and they usually do. It's trickle down. They take the tips, therefore making more money, which they will pass down to their employees. Very simple. MAGA.
