  1. QUOTE (flavum @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 09:02 AM) Mattingly and Dodgers mutually part ways. ESPN says he was offered an extension but had to become someone's puppet so he refused.
  2. QUOTE (MindGame2004 @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 09:48 AM) Where does Don Cooper factor into Samardzija's failures this past season? Wherever he lands, it is going to be interesting to see how he does and what he's throwing. He didn't get along with Cooper. Who's fault that is, we don't know, but I think you probably have to split it. One stat they had during one of the playoff games showed Shark threw his fastball a very small percentage of the time. Bottom 4 in baseball. I also read his slider was a big problem for him this year. He was hit hard vs. it, and in the past it was a put away pitch.
  3. When they changed the bullpens and moved the fences in down the lines, I think the next season it was reported there were 4 balls that were HR that wouldn't have been HR with the old dimensions.
  4. Here's something interesting I read, when the Sox signed Melky, KW said he turned down a 4 year deal elsewhere because he wanted to play for the White Sox. It turns out that 4 year deal was offered by KC, who then signed Alex Rios instead.
  5. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 09:46 AM) I dont get it, are you just listing guys who are out of baseball? What are you talking about? Humber should have brought back at least 2 or 3 top 100 prospects. Bobby Jenks was just let go. The Red Sox quickly signed him and he was awesome. Crain was hurt and hasn't pitched again since the Sox traded him, but those are exactly the types of guys teams are willing to give top prospects to acquire. Same with Gavin Floyd. Sergio Santos has been a stud since they traded him away. If competent, that's a middle of the order bat that should have come back. The Sox signed Danks then he got hurt, but there is no doubt teams are offering up their better players to bring him in now.
  6. Should have been able to rebuild a team for at least 6 or 7 years of sustained success for those names.
  7. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 09:34 AM) I'm not denying he sucked, as even his FIP wasn't all that great anyway, but just saying he was far from the worst, there are some really BAD pitchers out there. Justin Masterson didn't even make your list. There are probably dozens more.
  8. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 09:26 AM) Saying that because Samardzija gave up the most earned runs means he was the worst just ignores all the pitchers that were rocked and sent down because they didn't have any staying power, like the Hector Noesis and Dallas Beelers of the world. But even ignoring those, here's my list: Kyle Kendrick Kyle Lohse Jerome Williams Jeremy Guthrie Matt Garza Chris Rusin Drew Hutchingson Michael Lorenzen Odrisamer Despaigne Alfredo Simon Chris Tillman Anibal Sanchez Rick Porcello Matt Boyd David Buchanan Shane Greene Keyvius Simpson Kyle Lobstein Sean O'Sullivan David Hale Eddie Butler Felix Doubrant Brad Hand Mike Foltynewicz Matt Cain Josh Collmenter Roberto Hernandez Vidal Nuno Mat Latos You get the idea (that's at least two dozen), but just because Shane Greene only pitched 81 innings before getting the plug pulled on him (meaning he didn't give up nearly as many runs over the entire season) doesn't mean he wasn't much worse than Samardzija this year. And again that ignores all the scrubs that pitched around the league that are not anywhere near good enough to get 30 starts, and if they had they would be on this list too. That also ignores all the damage our defense potentially did to Samardzija this year, considering his FIP and fWAR numbers. Samardzija sucked, but you are totally correct.
  9. QUOTE (shysocks @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 09:12 AM) That's exactly his point. The very worst pitchers don't end up qualifying. Samardzija put up a stinker of a year, but he was also 11th in innings pitched, which has value because it means you're not turning the ball over to the Kyle Ryan's of the world instead. Also, since nobody's narrowed it to just starting pitchers and most relievers are just failed starters, I'll suggest that there are dozens of relief pitchers who would have fared worse than Samardzija if you had tried to stretch them out and given them 30 starts. Exactly. I don't understand why non-qualified players suddenly don't count as major leaguers.
  10. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 08:12 AM) All of the quirky things maddon did in regular season seemed to be exposed in this series as well as the flaws of the team as a whole. Schwarber made a fool of himself in LF. The thing is, baseball goes in cycles. You're hot, you cool off. You're cold, you get hot. The Cubs hit all those HRs vs. STL, and then had to face better pitchers, and a little more pressure. Regressing to the mean is eventually going to happen. It happened. I'm now hearing the spin that this loss will give them some invaluable experience. I'm not buying that. You just can't be great every series, no matter what you supposedly now "know". They had won 12 out of 13 coming in. They were due to take it on the chin.
  11. Their White Sox information couldn't be more wrong the past 5 years. If the White Sox trade Eaton who is signed to a team friendly extension, they will also need to find a leadoff hitter. Unless overwhelmed, the idea makes little sense. A team offensively challenged giving up one of its top hitters to open up a space for a guy based on his 130 or so major league ABs and ignoring his minor league numbers which would indicate the major league performance is a bit inflated, is not borderline insane. It is totally insane.
  12. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 07:00 AM) Yeah, didn't Samardzija lead the league in total runs allowed...? That alone screams "you can't name 24 pitchers who are worse than me" Sure you can. Chris Sale gave up more runs than Eric Johnson. I'd take Chris Sale. There are at least a couple pitchers per team that were worse than Samarjdzija. That would make up dozens.
  13. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 06:09 AM) Scrubs did something for the record books again. They never led. They fell behind in the first inning every game. It truly was one of the worst team performances in a postseason series of all time.
  14. Schwaber could definitely play for the White Sox with that kind of glove work.
  15. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 21, 2015 -> 06:46 PM) Lucas Duda homers today. And Murphy doesn't. Bet those home run props Impressive
  16. QUOTE (Dunt @ Oct 21, 2015 -> 03:01 PM) Did anybody see this one today: "Playoffs are not a representation of how good teams are, Cubs still best team in playoffs" Well, they can hang their hat on finishing 3rd, being the second WC, losing the NLCS decidingly but still remain the best team in the playoffs. Rahm should throw them a parade anyway.
  17. QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Oct 21, 2015 -> 03:13 PM) That title is about as valuable as Prior and Wood being the career leaders in simulated innings. They are towel drill first ballot HOFers.
  18. QUOTE (whitesoxjr27 @ Oct 21, 2015 -> 02:51 PM) Refresh my memory. Why did the 2004 Red Sox come back? Wasn't the Yankee pitching staff garbage? It was a different game back then but their team ERA was about 4.70. There were also a couple of extra inning games the Red Sox won, which really can be a crapshoot. There was one game that went 14 or 15 innings and Loiasa had to pitch. He of the 8.50 ERA.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 21, 2015 -> 02:41 PM) I quickly scanned the first three pages and saw 0 (zero) mentions of Robin being a bad manager because of his winning percentage. Wouldn't lack of wins be winning percentage? I don't think the pitchforks would be out if he had a .550 winning percentage, and I know you have seen plenty of posts actually using the words winning percentage. The bottom line is, if you think Robin is a bad manager because the Sox don't win many games, you don't want Manny Acta as the bench coach and possible replacement, because when he was making out line up cards, his teams lost more often.
  20. QUOTE (whitesoxjr27 @ Oct 21, 2015 -> 02:30 PM) This is the crap that is going around all day today. ROGERS: CUBS NEED 4 ONE-GAME WIN STREAKS The Cubs are in dangerous territory being down 3-0 to the Mets in the NLCS -- only one team in history has come back from that deficit. The man in charge of those '04 Red Sox? Theo Epstein, the man currently in charge of the Cubs With Epstein's Red Sox history on their side, Cubs are down 3-0, but not out It really is comical. If they do get swept tonight, it will all switch to how the 2016 WS is basically already won.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 21, 2015 -> 02:16 PM) This is so stinking annoying too. If you want to attribute an opinion to "Soxtalk" it should be something that is almost universally held. Here's the thread. I think it is an overwhelming opinion. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...7&start=100
  22. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 21, 2015 -> 01:50 PM) Can you name one poster who ripped Robin as manager due to his winning percentage that is in favor of hiring Acta as our manager? If not, you've once again combined a variety of Soxtalk opinions and then screamed "hypocrisy". Robin's winning pct. has been mentioned numerous times as the proof he needs to be fired. It has also been posted that no team other than the White Sox would ever hire him. You called Acta an ideal candidate. What is that based on? Certainly not how the teams he managed played. 73-89 59-102 26-61 69-93 80-82 65-91
  23. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Oct 21, 2015 -> 10:22 AM) Image if it were Ricky Renteria and he lead the White Sox to sustained years of success. He seemed to do well in getting the cub moving in the right direction. I don't know if Renteria is a good manager or not, but some like to give all the credit to Maddon with the huge bump in wins. It's an entirely different team.
  24. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Oct 21, 2015 -> 09:47 AM) My top 2 options are Renteria and Alomar Jr. It looks like Sandy is out. I wonder which side bailed. What is interesting is what kind of contract can the White Sox actually offer this guy? If the entire staff has 1 more year left, including Robin, can you really give a bench coach a multi-year deal? The other interesting thing was making McEwing a bench coach and hiring a 3B coach. That might actually be more beneficial winning games. I thought Super Joe made some really bad decisions the past couple of years.
