MLB free agent predictions: Who should sign Jeff Samardzija?
If you don't like Samardzija, think of it this way...if he is awesome in 2016, not taking the QO cost him a ton of money.

My/Your Off Season Plan
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 12, 2015 -> 10:57 AM) I think Fulmer is pretty much untouchable, but I agree otherwise. My guess is they'll take offers on Q first, and if they're not blown away, use Johnson & Montas to add some offense. Either way, frees up a spot for one of those mid-tier free agents, who make a ton of sense for the reasons you identified. Also, Anderson got a QO, so you can definitely cut him from the list of potential pickups. From what Hayes said, the Sox aren't too keen about dealing Q. He is the young cost-controlled they and every team desires. It would take a mint to pry him away.

Boras: Rodon should have been top pick in 14
They were calling the race for the worst record in 2013 the Carlos Rodon sweepstakes. He had a couple of rough outings his final season and people tend to outthink themselves and know with Boras , with Rodon as a junior with leverage, he is getting more than slot, so they go another direction and the White Sox wound up beneficiaries.

Levine Article: Sox Rebuilding
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Nov 11, 2015 -> 09:21 PM) Can you spend just a little more time in thinking about how to debunk everything I say, because your retorts are getting weaker and weaker as we go along. This is one of your sadder efforts, and that's saying something. I did not "ignore the parts about those other teams finishing under .500 for five straight years". I actually called out how Hahn not only acknowledged that's what a rebuild takes, but actually how he "praised" that approach and found it one to "emulate". What I did in my last post was simply try and tie in a point you made that we had started the rebuild a "few years ago" - your words - and therefore if this approach is one that Hahn now prefers, at least we are a few years into it. In other words, with our three consecutive years at under .500 already under our belts now, we should only have 2-3 years more of the results we've recently experienced before our fortunes turn. And given the current state of the team with its league-worst offense and near-worst defense, it's going to take 2-3 years to improve on that with an approach that involves avoiding free agency and favors acquiring young talent. One more time, SS2K5, just to make sure you get it. If Hahn is now in favor of the approach that Houston, KC, Pittsburgh and the Cubs took,,one that in his words requires a "minimum of five years with a record under .500", then at the very least that's good news, because we now have three of those under .500 done with. But it's going to take another couple of years to turn it around based on where we are today, and so your point that Hahn was not suggesting this organization wasn't "punting away half of a decade" in order to get things right was, well, wrong. Wrong and very inaccurate. Which is great for you, at least 2 more years of the same post b****ing about how Reinsdorf has ruined White Sox fans' lives. And it's not just being under .500 for 5 years, it is being god awful for 5 years or more. The Cubs had Schwarber and Bryant on the field as their draft picks this year. That is a #4 overall and a #2 overall. KC had Gordon, Moustakas and Hosmer, a #2, #2, and #3.

My/Your Off Season Plan
Dan Hayes was on CSN last night from the GM meetings, and he said Eric Johnson is on the block.

MLB believes international draft is viable
It would boggle my mind why the union would be against it. It would free up more cash for their membership.

White Sox make qualifying offer to Jeff Samardzija.
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Nov 11, 2015 -> 01:04 PM) Thanks. So if a player accepts a QO would that be considered an extension or a FA signing as far as the ability to trade that player? I don't think you can trade them until sometime in May or June without their consent.

No, Tim Anderson is not ready for MLB... yet
Steamer projects Anderson a 0.7 WAR in about half the playing time it projects Alexei a 0.9 WAR for 2016.

MLBTR Top 50 Free Agents
QUOTE (shysocks @ Nov 11, 2015 -> 10:48 AM) I think based on the "he just got cheaper" comment to end the post, yes he knows. I'm gonna take a hard pass on Reyes, even before considering he's an alleged wife beater. He looked awful vs. the White Sox last season. Now tosses his wife around. Not worth the trouble.

The Sox Were REALLY Bad at Defense
I am sure glad these numbers finally came out. I had no idea the White Sox defense was poor in 2015.

White Sox hire Rick Renteria and Greg Sparks
QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Nov 11, 2015 -> 09:25 AM) I was under the impression that Maddon or not, Renteria probably wasn't going to be around once Theo & Friends felt they were ready to compete. He may have stayed through the extra year (2015 season) if their bespectacled messiah didn't fall into their hands (obviously there was some collusion there as well), but that entire thing felt temporary from the moment he was hired. He actually had 2 years left on his contract. I don't think he was a place holder. Whatever it is, the Cubs and the almighty Theo, thought he was good enough for their young players as the manager. As a bench coach, no one should have a problem with this hire.

My/Your Off Season Plan
The Rockies aren't going to trade Arenado unless you dramatically overpay. Can we stop the madness? It isn't happening. He's probably the new face of the franchise.

Sox to go trade route possibly
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Nov 10, 2015 -> 10:12 AM) Honestly I never put any stock into the "three year plan" quote, people are reading way too much into that. I agree. They are always planning for the future. That is what the "board" was for in KW's office. Also, adding cost controlled young players doesn't mean they are stepping away from trying to compete. If anything, it suggests they are willing to trade some young players, and don't want guys with a year or 2 left as the reward.

Manny Acta offered coaching job; Takes Job with M's
Often times your second or third choice winds up being the best choice. Bud Black wanted him to be his bench coach again in Washington. The Cubs seemed to really like him. I think Renteria will be fine.

Acta is the new 3rd base coach for Seattle. Ricky Renteria, c'mon down.

Sox to go trade route possibly
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 10, 2015 -> 07:57 AM) Because every team may not have the money to offer up $150-200 mill for a starter. And usually those contracts look really bad the last couple of years, if not sooner. Plus you are giving up a 1st round pick in many instances.

Sox to go trade route possibly
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 9, 2015 -> 12:51 PM) 86 games in 2012 82 games in 2013 50 games in 2014 Never has played a full season due to injuries. He is always injured, but we know this. I am under no illusion he would get 500-600 plate appearances. I posted he won't make it through the season. I don't even know if he would make it to game 1, but IMO, it's worth a shot if he's healthy enough to play in spring training. Perhaps his familiarity with the White Sox and their training staff makes it attractive.

I saw him during his last season vs. the Cubs and he could barely stand. Now, he is said to be attempting a comeback, and most assuredly will have to sign a minor league contract. Supposedly he would market himself as a 1B/DH/OF. Sign me up. If he can't do it, so what? He won't be healthy the entire season, but when he is, he is exactly the type of hitter the Sox need. You just said he could barely stand last year, and then you want to sign him? Could barely stand in 2014. Sat out 2015. Again, it's a minor league contract. If he's reasonably heathy, he is better offensively than most 9 figure free agents. He just isn't going to make it the entire year.

I wonder how many of the Iowa fans who gave up their season tickets and vowed never to return until Ferentz was fired have changed their minds.

Illinois fires AD Mike Thomas
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Nov 9, 2015 -> 10:22 AM) Cubit and all other assistants are cleared of any wrong doing as well. It was all Beckman. So that's good at least. What they all were guilty of, was not reporting it. The defense that they were unaware is pretty weak. It is a tough one because their employment status is/was probably closely tied to Beckman's.

Illinois fires AD Mike Thomas
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Nov 9, 2015 -> 09:32 AM) Ugh, this timing...such an Illinois thing to do. We better have a good idea of who can take over, as mentioned our next FB hire is coming up quickly. I don't think I know a U of I alum that didn't think he needed to be fired months ago. Apparently the report says he committed no misconduct, which is probably what just about everyone figured before. But when this stuff does happen underneath you, and it is occurring with people you hire who have had similar incidents at other places, it does show while he was on the up and up, he was pretty incompetent. Now they can move on. I do think this puts a little more pressure on Groce, but if they do fine, he should be alright.
