I hadn't realized that the source of the "orbital blowout fracture" was The Dumbest Man on the Internet, Jim Hoft. Turns out he crudely doctored some xray scan he found on the internet. http://littlegreenfootballs.com/article/43...ick_His_Readers

Ferguson Riots
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 03:53 PM) This piece at Reddit does a convincing job of arguing that the police made multiple mistakes in the suicide by cop case that forced them into a position where they had to shoot. The writer argues that they parked way too close, putting themselves in a position where the moment they exited the car they were within the danger-range for a person with a knife, they didn't retreat and actually moved closer to the person escalating again, parked in a position where there were bystanders behind the guy with the knife such that if he hadn't moved there would have been innocent people at risk if they had to shoot, and made no effort to de-escalate the situation after their arrival by moving back or trying to find safer positions. That was the first thing that I noticed when I watched the video, that the guy recording it and presumably others were directly in the line of fire for a while until the guy with the knife took a wide path to the officers' right.

The Beheading
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 02:38 PM) That can change in a hurry with nukes and the like and/or the predicted economic meltdown and chaos. Or racial chaos or this new threat from the police type chaos. humans will be gone long before then (simple evolutionary process will take care of that), but even if we wipe ourselves out prematurely, life will go on. The Earth has been through far worse than we can throw at it.

Yeah, we will eventually have Wilson's actual testimony, sworn statements from all of the actual witnesses, the other autopsy reports, ballistics reports, medical reports on Wilson, etc.

The Democrat Thread
So the Tribune had a poll with Rahm behind CTU head Karen Lewis the other day. I wouldn't expect that to hold up in an actual race, but Rahm has been pretty awful.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 11:28 AM) This is easy. Weapon in view, your weapon is out. When he was teenager, my cousin was pretty prone to rage and fighting with his parents. In one incident, he threatened his dad with a knife, and I think he had already hit him a few times. Police were called, but weapons weren't drawn. They talked him down out of his rage and ultimately left with a "boys will be boys" shrug because his parents didn't want to press any charges. I don't know how things would have turned out if the police rolled up and immediately pointed guns at him, but I can only think that it would have increased the chances of something awful happening.

Was it necessary to immediately draw their guns when they arrived? To me, that just escalates the situation. (I'm more picking your brain on your training and procedures here than anything else right now)

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 11:14 AM) Just walk at the police with a knife or even a gun in hand, keep saying "I'm not a threat", and they'll have no reason to think otherwise! Is death the appropriate outcome? Is any other outcome possible?

The regular police forces in the UK and Japan (and probably other countries) don't carry guns. edit: I'm not suggesting that for regular US police forces, but it does suggest that there are other ways of handling situations with people armed with a knife than shooting them at the drop of a hat. e.g. here's how some UK cops have handled knife-wielding attackers

I have a very hard time accepting that the only outcome of a man walking towards two police officers armed with a steak knife is that he's shot dead.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 09:08 PM) A black eye is not exactly running away with your hands up either. Nobody has disputed a struggle in the car or through the car window before Brown turn and fled. There were just "sources" that said Wilson had this fracture, just like "sources" have said the police have over a dozen witnesses that back their version. And of course these are just sources that are saying otherwise.

A black eye isn't quite a broken eye socket.

It's more "a source confirms" but CNN is reporting that Wilson did not have a fractured orbital bone. http://www.salon.com/2014/08/21/cnn_refute...red_eye_socket/

Washington Football Franchise team name discussion
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 05:46 PM) Despite the same history, and the application of a term used to strip the history and culture away from a group, I am still looking for some substantiation of this claim

Washington Football Franchise team name discussion
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 04:53 PM) There is one HUGE difference there. We didn't take over Africa and rename them on their own tribal and historical lands. They are actually African. Unless you are taking the term American to mean North American, and not United States of American. I don't use it as such, as tribes outside of the US still are identified by their tribal histories, such as the Maya, Inca, etc. They aren't known as Mexican Indians or some other artificial colonial construct. The combo AmerIndians is applied more to Central American Indians than other groups. Tribes within the US are still identified uniquely, just as Europeans, Asians, Africans etc. identify by ethnic and national groups. Africa was also named by the Romans, not by Africans.

I would legitimately be interested in any background information on the history of the term "Indian," how it was applied by Europeans and how it was received by American Indians. I posted it several pages back now, but the modern concepts of race didn't even exist until the 17th century, and it wasn't really formalized until the 18th and 19th.

Jose Abreu does the ice bucket challenge
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 02:10 PM) I have no issues with the ice bucket challenge, nor do I have an issue with donating to ALS research, but I do want to go off topic for just a moment to plug the fact that over 10 times as many people die from prostate/breast cancer as ALS. That could actually be a reason why awareness campaigns are even more important. If lots of people have a disease or have a decent probability of getting that disease in their lifetime (or a loved one), there's going to be more outreach, funding, treatment, research etc.

I don't know the details, but my coworker has that. He streams to his phone/laptop when he's on the road. We got one of the World Cup matches up on a monitor in our booth at a trade show last year with it, too.

QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 02:14 PM) When I was in school in 2008 I remember a man dying in a court room after being tasered. Funny how 6 years later we are pining for tasers to be used more. Yes, I'm a little surprised to see that as well. For years I've read stories of the overuse/abuse of tasers and other less-than-lethal (but not always) methods.
