QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 31, 2011 -> 02:29 PM) More seriously though, you should always do them from a land line phone. Cell phone just never works well. Oh, that's a great point...they have my cell phone number currently...I should probably give them my land line and have them call that. Thanks for the tip! This is for something I would have never thought to apply for, but I have a buddy out in Portland who works for this company, and pestered me to apply. After like 3 months, they called me yesterday to set up a phone interview. It's a solid position, dispatching the energy from wind farms, so I'd like to do well, even though I am still waiting on the decision for a position with my own company.

Anyone have any special tips on phone interviews? I've done fairly well with them in the past, but would love to hear if anyone has any tips..
  3. QUOTE (Tex @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 05:54 AM) Y'all have the day you want. The goal of my original post was to urge you to enjoy the games. Sorry that was so f***ing offensive. Some of you will learn nothing in the next thirty years of life worth sharing, but most of you will and I hope you at least attempt to share that. Life can be a learning experience, if you let it. A lot of people put words in my mouth, and decided they knew what I was "really" saying. I can tell you that most were very wrong. The mods and the admins are aware of the conversations that led to the post and the sincere manner in which it as intended. So for some I say, I hope this is a great day for you. For others, I hope you have the type of day you want. I will never wish a great day for people who would prefer to have a s***ty one. Tex, You are a product of your age and experiences, just as Yasny and FlaSoxxJim and some of the other guys around here that are a bit longer in the teeth. Some of the younger posters this thread is aimed at are a product of theirs. No one can tell them to change, or snap their fingers and expect them to appreciate things more, or expect less. They have to live their own lives, form their own personalities, and decide on their own how they want to view the White Sox. So let's allow them that and move forward.
  4. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Mar 28, 2011 -> 09:46 PM) I don't know if this is true or not, but it seems as though their pretty obvious bias has gotten under the skin of enough fans that it could eventually be a problem. I, for one, only watch ESPN when they have a game on that I want to see. I don't watch it for highlights anymore at all, simply because I find their choice of coverage obnoxious. They may be winning over a few fans but they might be alienating a lot more in the process. I'm sure their finger is on the pulse of this issue much more than mine, but some balanced coverage and non-meathead/sensationalist analysis might get them some people back. Well don't you think they have people in charge of their network that have considered all these things? I am not privy to the inner workings of ESPN, but my guess is that they understand there is a certain segment of their audience that gets alienated by the Red Sox/Yankees coverage, however, the ratings they get are enough to trump this. You can never please all of the people all of the time, so you just try to please as many of them as you can as much of the time. The challenge is to find that sweet spot which results in the big ratings from the Yanks/Red Sox games and the Cubs/Cards games, while still keeping around as many fans of the other teams and casual fans as possible. And I am certain they have poured plenty of research into finding where that is.
  5. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 28, 2011 -> 10:38 PM) I understand it's business, but business also doesn't include leaving out the little guys and only focusing on what will get you the most money. If ESPN cut down on half the Red Sox/Yankees games, and did a variety of other teams, they would not be getting ads pulled from them left and right, and even if they did, I'm pretty sure they are not hurting for money. It doesn't?
  6. People have to understand ESPN is just doing what makes sense to them from a business perspective. If you were in charge of scheduling programming, and your goal is to raise as much advertising revenue as possible, which teams would you schedule? The fact is, the Yankees and the Red Sox have the largest fanbases, and these Yankees-Red Sox games bring the largest ratings, which, in turn, allow ESPN to charge more for it's advertising and maximize revenue. It's business, and nothing else.
  7. Damn, you guys are making me hungry...I'm starting to have dreams of two dogs w/ and a healthy dose of mustard....oh, how I miss the Cell...
  8. QUOTE (Go_Go_Sox79 @ Mar 28, 2011 -> 02:19 PM) A city known for its Pizza will be serving something anyone can go buy at their local supermarket! For shame White Sox! On the bright side Midwest Beers has some potential if they plan on serving 3 Floyds and Bells! That's what one should get for ordering pizza at a baseball game...
  9. Oooh, those tequila drinks sound intriguing, Jim...going to put those on my "to drink" list...

    2011 TV Thread

A few new shows starting soon that I am interested in checking out: Camelot on Starz begins April 1st, and The Killing on AMC begins April 3rd. Set your TiVo's.
  11. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 27, 2011 -> 10:17 PM) The bad thing about VCU in the Final Four is that it gives all the supporters of a 96-team bracket so much ammo. If the last team in can make it that far, why couldn't the 70th or 80th team do it too? Get ready for that argument. I honestly have no problem with a 96 team bracket at this point...but then again I'm not a huge college basketball fan outside of the tournament, so having the regular season basically be irrelevant would not bother me. And more NCAA tourney games can never be a bad thing, IMO.
  12. Passive aggressiveness irks me more than just being a straightup asshole.
  13. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 27, 2011 -> 01:53 AM) If everything were even, teams would only get to the World Series once every 15 years (depending on their league, of course), and teams would only win a World Series once every 30 years. It's the same thing throughout all of sports. What frustrates and upsets the Sox fans to which you are referring is the fact that they are continually beaten by the Twins, and then the Twins inevitably get swept in the postseason. Atleast to me, that is my absolute greatest frustration about this team. They can hang with the Twins, but they don't, and then the Twins get to the postseason and s*** the bed. Through mere correlation, the Sox get overlooked and underrated by the rest of the nation. They have had a relatively great team for the past 11 seasons, including 1 World Series victory, but because they can't beat a team that can't beat the Yankees or the A's, people assume the White Sox are a second tier team. They are not. They have the resources to be a playoff team year after year, yet they have only made the playoffs once since 2005 and even that took a great deal of luck (the Twins losing 2 of 3 to Kansas City). I want this team to make the playoffs in back to back years - something they've never done (though they should have in '94). It would be nice to have some vested interest in the playoffs in consecutive years, wouldn't it? Right now, the Twins are the Sox biggest competitors with the Tigers right behind those two. The Indians and Royals, especially the Royals, are collecting talent in any manner possible to build towards a long term run at the division crown. Come 2014, this Sox team may become irrelevant within the AL Central. All I want between now and then is 2 playoff appearances. That may be too much to ask, but I certainly hope not, and I hope they can do it. I also imagine that's what most of the Sox fans you are referring to want as well (give or take). At this point, the Sox have proven they are competitive. We want to see the Sox make the playoffs. I imagine you want that as well. I tend to agree. I think we may be reaching the end of one of the "golden ages" of White Sox baseball. I will always underappreciate these seasons in the present, and probably overindulge them in the future, but I suppose that is par for the course. I do know one thing...having KW as our GM is what keeps my appetite sated each and every year, despite the frustrating collapses down the stretch. Let's give ourself another legitimate WS opportunity. That is all I want before we close out this era.
  14. Oh Tex...great idea...this is going to be one funny thread...
  15. Jeesh, 26 and 17 for Rose tonight? Insane...
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 08:10 PM) While all of that is good...I think, especially with iffy government policy, we're playing catchup already. Best example of that is the fact that we're already paying $3.50/gallon again, and we've barely caught up to the 2007 GDP level. Well you know that we're not going to turn the fossil fuels and oil industry upside down barring some major technological breakthrough, so to me, the key is just to keep the momentum moving forward.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 03:07 PM) If government policy was lined up correctly, I think we'd beat those efficiency gains. More realistic though...I think government policy will continue to stagnate, the private sector will make some moves in that direction but it'll flounder (just like you're saying wind is doing right now), and the end result will be repeated economic busts. Every time the global economy tries to grow, demand for fuel and energy is going to try to go up, and it's going to be overwhelmed with a price spike. I think there is a lot more momentum behind wind, solar, and geothermal than you guys are realizing. Maybe I have a different perspective than some of you because I am involved in the energy industry, but the momentum is real. A lot of the more progressive states out west have aggressive RPS's, and this is driving a lot of private investment. As more projects are developed, the processes get refined, and the costs drop. I think a real key will be when the public consumers, who are a real driving force for these renewables, start getting the bills for these projects. How consumers will react when they have to put their money where their mouths have been will be interesting to see. There will certainly be some growing pains, and some steps backward at times, but I don't think renewables are going to stagnate like some seem to believe. The failure rates on a typical renewable development project were in the 70% range for the past few years, but we're starting to see that drop down closer to 50% as companies and investors get better at anticipating pitfalls and other problems. I interviewed for a management position last week in our renewables department, where I'd be managing a lot of the contracts for our projects while they are in the development stage. I doubt I will get the job, since it is a bit of a reach for me at this stage in my career, but from the research I did to prepare and the answers to my questions I asked, there is all the work we can handle over the next several years, and I don't anticipate that changing anytime soon.
  18. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 06:30 PM) Of course I read your first post but you also said this "I'm not saying that makes anyone a better fan, which I DO believe is the theme of this thread" . You obviously think Tex is calling you a lesser fan because of what you call his history of posts doing just that. I don't see it that way but as much as I read Soxtalk I don't really remember who fights with who and why . Maybe that was his intent , maybe not. I just took it to mean being so pessimistic won't help you with much of anything be it fandom, relationships , raising children ,work or life in general. I am as optimistic as anyone, and I do try and make people look at that side of things a lot, but other people have every right to have a pessimistic attitude if they want. And it's not my right, or Tex's, or anyone's to tell someone else what to think. Where I get confused is why these people that are so pessimistic torture themselves by lamenting about the same things every day in the game threads. It just seems unhealthy to me. But those that do have pointed out that it is a stress reliever to come and vent with others with like-minded opinions, and if that is the case, than I say have at it. I didn't take offense to what Tex posted, but I can see how some might. Everyone has a right to their own viewpoint, and just because you or I don't understand it, those with pessimistic attitudes don't understand our optimistic attitudes either. So let's embrace our diversity here and turn it into some good spirited debate.
  19. QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 01:22 AM) You're the first I've seen mention it. Wes Unseld was 23 when he won it.
  20. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 01:18 AM) Something is wrong with your head if PBR is refreshing. Sarcasm. Nostalgia.
  21. This has probably been mentioned dozens of times, but I just realized Rose would be the youngest player ever to win the MVP, should he win it this season. Heck of a season, young man.
  22. Don't love how Milledge was buckling against those hooks....
  23. QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Mar 25, 2011 -> 10:30 PM) VCU Wins! What a find under the basket!
