QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Dec 9, 2015 -> 04:50 PM) I'm sorry but the American dream got flushed down the toilet when those rich cocksuckers started cheating. They got rich off the hard working people of America, they most certainly did not earn all of their billions of dollars. Wrong. http://www.chicagobooth.edu/capideas/magaz...aires-self-made

2015-2016 NBA Thread
QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ Dec 9, 2015 -> 03:40 PM) Do you genuinely think that no NBA or sports superstars cheat on their wives like crazy? I honestly think that it's to the point that infidelity is so ho-hum and not juicy enough that more "paparazzi" probably knows about it nowadays but don't bother to report it unless there's maybe some crazy baby mama drama involved or somethin' along with some sort of wild video. That or most of these guys are smart enough to know that marriage and pro basketball careers don't really mix. How many players on the Bulls are married? Any of them? I assume Gasol, but that's it.

2015 TV Thread
So The League is apparently ending soon. I didn't realize they decided to stop making episodes. I've watched every episode for some strange reason, but it's been borderline unwatcheable for several seasons now. It still has a few moments here and there, but overall it's pretty awful. Taco especially.

2015-2016 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 9, 2015 -> 12:12 PM) I'm kind of interested when the Warriors start to become villains nationally. I love to watch them play and Steph is a blast but he's starting to be the guy that whines after every play and he's the ultimate showboat but no one says anything yet. That type of stuff never bothers me but it usually does annoy people on a national stage. Really? I don't see much of that. I don't see them ever becoming villains. They don't play dirty. They don't flop all over the court. They don't under-perform like Lebron (in terms of his insane expectation levels). Steph is an incredibly likeable guy that looks more like you and I than anyone else in the league. Other than Detroit and Utah, were the Bulls dynasty teams ever vilified? I don't think so. The Rockets weren't. The Lakers might have been a little, but most people were pulling for Kobe. The Spurs weren't/aren't. The Heat were because they were "hollywood as hell" and that's 100% true.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 9, 2015 -> 11:01 AM) A lot of independent and even borderline conservative people hopefully reject what Trump's saying, though. That's the parallel that ss2k5 was trying to make, and it really just doesn't hold. Trump is appealing to the basest instincts of the conservative base (terrible pun intended) but Clinton is (and always pretty much has) appealing to the center-left of the Democratic party. edit: aside from a few recent years due to Obamacare backlash, a majority of Americans have supported a federal universal health care system for a long, long time. I took his point to mean that both say what people want to hear rather than what they actually believe. Whether that's to a fringe portion of the party (with major power) or to a large portion of the electorate (also with power and opposed to a more extreme candidate) doesn't really matter. They lack an actual message/agenda other than to be President.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 9, 2015 -> 10:19 AM) This only makes sense if you think that the political parties that candidates choose to align with and draw their support from are random or something. I mean it's basically saying "if Hillary were a radical right-wing Republican trying to appeal to radical right-wing Republicans, she'd do the same thing!" edit: and you can look at her own stances in comparison with what the Democratic base wants, and it doesn't really support that idea. Most liberals are strongly in favor of Universal Health Care and many (possibly most?) support free college plans, but she's criticizing Sanders from the right on both of those issues. Yeah but a lot of the independent and even borderline conservative people that MIGHT vote for her don't support those ideas, or maybe they do in theory but don't see that's its economically feasible. She's playing to her base and to those people who are scared off by how leftist Sanders is. That's entirely consistent with what SS2K5 said.

Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 9, 2015 -> 10:09 AM) Depends on what she was using for photos...did she have her photos backed up to Google Photos or Google Drive? If so, they're safe. If she was simply storing them on her phone and formatted it...not sure there is much you can do. No back-ups, unfortunately. Lesson learned. But we/she didn't format anything, that's what's messed up. And the fact that you can't take a picture and save it leads me to believe it's a software problem somewhere.

Technology catch-all thread
Anyone an Android expert out there? My wife and I have Galaxy Note 3's. Her phone has always had some weird issues with certain apps not working properly, but 99% of the time it worked just fine. Last week she started getting these error messages that force closed any app that was running, even google services and samsung specific apps. I reset it, then started it in safe mode and reset it, cleared the cache, force stopped/cleared the cache of all the apps that were coming up with error messages, and even did the "wipe cache partition" feature. Nothing worked. Everyone online suggested a factory reset. Preparing to do that, I started to back-up her files (all internal memory, no SD card....big mistake), and found that ALL of her photos/videos/everything were gone. I never deleted them, but apparently the system can't find them anywhere. If you go to settings - data, the only "user data" that shows up is app data. But what's weird is that under the "misc data" area, there are 18gb's. And you can't drill down at all to see what those 18gb's are...there is no list of files like on my phone. Similarly, the "My Files" app lists 0 music, photo or video files. The thing won't even save images she previously sent through her messaging app, nor will it save photos that you have just taken on the phone. So I call Samsung and spent 45 minutes talking to some guy from India walk me through all of the steps I just tried. He also had me try and connect the phone to the computer via their back-up software but the software won't connect to the phone (windows recognizes the phone is plugged in, but not folders show up when you try to explore it). I called up AT&T (our provider) and spent 45 minutes with basically the same troubleshooting. Over the weekend i took it to the Samsung techs at Best Buy and they seemed just as puzzled. They reinstalled the operating system on the phone but it didn't clear the force app error messages, and it didn't "find" any of her photos/video either. All of the data settings say there are no files. They also couldn't get the phone to connect to any software to run a back-up. They concluded the photos were gone. I said it's really odd that there is this 18gb of misc data on there (that's usually for app related data, but she doesn't have any games or anything on her phone. It's all shopping apps and pinterest type apps, how much data do those apps really require?) and they told me that photos don't save to that folder, so they can't be photos. As a last resort they said I could call Samsung and ship the phone to them but it could cost hundreds of dollars, take several weeks and they still might not find anything. My wife is resigned to the fact that she's lost 2 years of photos/video. I'm still not buying that the data isn't there. It just needs to be found. She said she was browsing through photos the night before they all went missing and neither one of us did any sort of delete or resest on the phone. It seems to me there is some kind of software bug that is just refusing to index the files and recognize them as photos/video. Anyone have any ideas? Sending it to Samsung isn't a realistic option (she'd be without a phone for weeks). But if there's something else to try, I'd really like to do that if at all possible. edit: oh, and the other problem is that the phone won't connect to the internet at all. Either through wi-fi or cell service. So I can't download any apps. I guess I could maybe download an app onto an SD card, install that into her phone and try to boot the program from there.

Having a baby
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 8, 2015 -> 03:19 PM) Didn't mean to take over. It sucks, but when we began being more open about that, we suddenly found how common it is. From in our family to friends. It's a part of life, unfortunately, but it's a taboo and it can feel rough when you think it's this huge rare personal issue. Yeah man sorry to hear about that. We've been lucky with that stuff but had a scare a few weeks ago. You feel so helpless. I do think people understand. It's not like anyone will judge you guys for it. I'm not sure why we can't be more open about it. I think it probably started because women felt responsible or inadequate in some way (which obviously has nothing to do with it), and then you might have to tell 20-30-100 people you're no longer pregnant. Just easier to not let anyone know until the risk is really, really low.

Having a baby
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 8, 2015 -> 02:41 PM) Oh man I went on a few month long bender when my wife was pregnant, it was definitely a bout of contention. I would stumble in at 4am and I knew I was in deep s*** the next day. Dont be me, be more considerate. But of course when the baby is born your partying is going to slow way down until you find good babysitters. So you still need to be up front that you are getting it out of your system for awhile. Dieting is tough, your wife wants to eat and so will you, I gained about 15 pounds from pizza and the winter weather. Try your best to keep up healthy dieting and also working out, it will make both of you happier. Funny you say this, i'm sort of in the midst of this now. My wife's 2nd pregnancy has been way worse. Her first pregnancy was a breeze, nothing really made her sick or nauseous, but this 2nd one is the complete opposite. She went about 3 weeks eating nothing but ice cream and oatmeal. And then when she finally starting eating it was nothing but sweets (pies/cakes) and quick stuff (pizza, mac n cheese, etc) While I've been making my own things, it's tough to do that EVERY meal. Re the drinking, that was pretty rough the first time around. We're not heavy drinkers, but every Friday we would grab Mexican at a local place and usually get a pitcher of margaritas. We also were members of a local wine club. I'm forbidden to drink any of the wine and if I make a drink at home she occasionally gives me the stink eye. But all and all I just don't flaunt it and it's fine. She hasn't really missed it this time around given that she feels like booting most of the day, but the first pregnancy I think it took her some time to get over it.

Religion and Gun Attacks
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 8, 2015 -> 11:00 AM) I guess I don't understand the problem with large public institutions with diverse staff and students not tailoring their official functions to one specific religion. Nothing will beat when our regional office had a "cultural diversity food day" a few years back during Ramadan, though. I think people tire of bending to a very small minority. I'm usually with them. It's great to be different. We all don't have to be the exact same in every way. This country is predominately Christian. The vast majority of people celebrate Christmas. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't be inclusive to other peoples/religions as well, but it also doesn't mean we have to sanitize that tradition away. I also think big public institutions like schools cave based on some expected blow back that may never arise. The "PC" culture has made people ASSUME things will cause an uproar, so they react before anything happens.

2015 TV Thread
QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Dec 7, 2015 -> 08:56 PM) Hell I don't even know what is going on and I still watch lol I feel like it's a lot like Lost - you can dive in as deep as you want. There are all sorts of literary/biblical/religious references in pretty much everything they showed. You can go that route and try to craft reasons for why Kevin does certain things, or why Jarden worked like it did, or you could just enjoy the ride. I kind of do a mix of both. I watch the show and enjoy it on a lighter level and then my wife and I will listen to a podcast while on a road trip to do the deep dive.

Judge deciding whether to reveal police shooting video
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 7, 2015 -> 01:20 PM) K, we're going to agree to disagree that a murder in Chicago is going to go all the way up to the President to cover it up just to save some poll numbers for Rahm Emmanuel. I'm not saying they won't find ANYTHING. I bet their finding concludes some racial disparity in policing/arrests. But it's not going to be some damning report that implicates the mayor's office in any way, shape or form.

Judge deciding whether to reveal police shooting video
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 7, 2015 -> 12:43 PM) Is there any direct connection between Lynch and Rahm? If there isn't, I wouldn't see her putting her career on the line to protect Rahm. She was originally appointed by Clinton as a US attorney and then again twice (US attorney and AG) by Obama. Rahm has played integral roles in both administrations. Are they best buds? I dunno. But I have no doubt there's a familiarity there.

Judge deciding whether to reveal police shooting video
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 7, 2015 -> 12:04 PM) Please, aside from the fact that the same "circle of people" do not run the DOJ, we are talking about years of abuse we've all "heard" about but now have subpoena's to back up. If anything this allows him to offset blame and solutions to a federal group. Lynch was appointed by Obama. Obama also appointed her as US attorney back in 2010. They have a history, much like he had with Holder. If you think that's just some coincidence, like he wouldn't appoint people he knows, or people of people he knows, you're crazy. I'm sure Rahm will try to offset blame, but he's been in office for 4 years now. That's not exactly "oh i just inherited this mess and had no time to do anything about it." He also appointed the last superintendent, so if any of the DOJ comes back with any findings for the last 4 years, how is that not on Rahm too for his appointment?

Judge deciding whether to reveal police shooting video
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 7, 2015 -> 11:26 AM) I'm very happy the DOJ is reviewing the CPD. I really think the time is right, and that is the right approach, to providing some honest to God reforms that will help the city and police longterm. To me, it will be the same kick that Pat Fitzgerald provided to the state govt. They may not be better in policy, but I truly believe the state gov't is cleaner than ever before thanks to his efforts. Keeping in mind of course the DOJ is being run/overseen by the same circle of people as Rahm. Do we really think the DOJ is going to come out with some damning report that would screw him? No chance. Too much politically at stake here.

I think 14 v 140 or whatever (with multiple, coordinated attacks) also bumps up the level of response.
