I never said this was justified, but i'm not ready to say it wasn't justified either. At the end of the day you could be as peaceful as you want, but if you're breaking the law and you won't move, then I think that kind of action is justified. I just want to know how you think you can get people who are dead weight with arms locked to move unless you start using some physical force. Apparently i'm dumb since i'm not sure how you can do it, so please enlighten me. It's not like they could get 4 officers to pick each of these people up. According to the story you linked, at least some of them were resisting that. And the tent thing. Why did they need a tent? Was that part of the protest?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 11:08 AM) The same way that passive resistance is handled thousands of times without unnecessary police violence. You don't need to spray or beat people in order to move them. I'd say that I'm still waiting for a justifying scenario, but you seem to be saying that passively resisting a police order is justification enough. You have yet to answer the question of how to deal with these people that won't move, except to say "not with batons or pepper spray." Anyone know why this group didn't just go through the proper channels with the school? If you want to hold a rally or a protest, notify the school and they let you do it. No problems on either side.

So if it's ok in some situations, and Newt is saying there's value in that, he's advocating for child sweat shop labor how? Look, I know you despise anyone with a conservative thought in their brain, but you're taking his statement to the extreme. Unfairly so.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 20, 2011 -> 02:53 AM) You are quoting the wrong guy but I think he figured out 10 was a bit of a stretch. With that said, the Big Ten blows this year, that BCS game isnt going to be very good with the team performing as they are right now. Second, good to see Oregon get knocked out, I'm sick of seeing them exposed in BCS games, give them a year or so and then they can come back. And third, I think I like Barkley over Luck, and I'm serious. I really don't think 10 was a stretch given how they started and the schedule they had. They were 6-0 with an offense scoring 30+ a game. Then suddenly it all stopped. Until yesterday (4 games) they failed to score ANY points in the 1st half. And they kept beating themselves. Horrendous special teams play and terrible turnovers. Out of these last 5 games, they should have beaten OSU, they should have beaten PSU and they should have beaten WIS given how they dominated the first half. They gifted WIS half of their points and eventually just gave up. They should win next week against MINN. And really they had a chance against MICH but again shot themselves in the foot. I see what you guys are saying - they lost because special teams isn't good and their offense isn't as good. But I see it from the perspective that the talent is clearly there, the defense was there and the schedule was definitely there. It came down to self-inflicted problems and terrible coaching. Shocker that i'm describing Illinois football.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 01:04 PM) You really dont believe that do you? That would make them one of 4 teams in Illinois history to win 10 games. Do you think they are that good? If the offense was anywhere close to competent the last 4 weeks they would have won at least two of those.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 10:11 AM) I'm not sure what you're talking about. Newt is advocating removal of child labor restrictions. 15 and 16 yo's can legally work already. The next paragraph: so, poor kids in poor schools should be put to work, displacing unionized janitors. Funny, but some of those kids' parents would be those same janitors, and now you've just depressed wages for janitorial work while also making their parents unemployed. That's a sure-fire way to rise up out of poverty. Again, why is this man taken seriously? You're delusional and purposefully blowing his statement out of proportion. You might as well have said Newt was calling for slavery to return.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 10:55 AM) I'm in agreement that this probably isn't a good idea, but your example didn't make much sense. A similar initiative would be the government adding a .15 tax to all legal services and using it to fund an advertising campaign for legal services, not a single law firm doing it. But there's no reason that industry trade groups couldn't get together without government sponsorship. That is what I meant. My firm can tack on some government-imposed fee for legal services (as would others) for the purpose of paying for a lobbyist (marketing) to lobby (advertise) for something the industry in general might want (like tort-reform). At least we both agree it's a stupid idea to get the government involved!

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 10:51 AM) You can tack on whatever you want. That's different from an industry-wide tax to support industry-wide advertising. So make it industry wide. What's the difference? It's an incredibly stupid idea. It's using the government (public) for a purely private interest.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 10:06 AM) I'm not sure that "Subsidize" is the correct word here, since no taxpayer funds are at risk, it's just making use of the already extant system of collecting and distributing taxes to allow funds to be pooled in a certain way. The government definitely does subsidize US based agricultural industry advertising already, to the tune of billions of taxpayer dollars. It'd be a lot nicer if those subsidies were set up like this. You don't think this is a waste of the USGA's money and resources? Also, much like the auto-bailouts weren't going to cost the tax payers money - how's that working out? Didn't they just up the losses from 14 billion to 24 billion? My law firm would love it if we could just tack on .15 cents to each billable hour we work. We'll promise to use the funds SOLELY to fund our lobbyist...er...create marketing campaigns against tort reform. Cool?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 09:11 AM) Sigh. Group of Christmas tree farmers approaches the department of Agriculture in 2008, proposes adding a $.15 "Fee" on to the sale of Christmas trees. The fee would be entirely dedicated to funding advertising encouraging people to purchase christmas trees. Something similar to the "Got Milk", "Pork the Other White Meat", and "Beef it's what's for dinner" campaigns. After 3 years of study, a comment period where hundreds of growers commented and gave a 90% positive response rate, agreement is reached to add $.15 to the price of live Christmas trees to fund advertising. Again, entirely proposed by the growers, supported by the growers, Government only serves as an enabler so that the money can be collected and pooled nationally. Of course, the Right wing freaks out about Obama's war on Christmas trees with his new tax. And it takes about a week for the administration to give up on the proposal and delay it indefinitely. Sigh. Why the f*** should the government be taxing the purchase of christmas trees simply to aid growers in an advertising campaign. Even if it's a penny it's a waste of government resources.

2011-2012 NCAA Basketball Thread
Caught my first Illinois game of the year last night. Could be a long season. Tons of athletes on the floor, but none are very polished. Richardson/Paul are going to be what they've always been - good but not great. Neither have the killer instinct to take over a game. In fact that's the biggest problem with this team - there's no go-to guy when they need to score. I can see why people are so excited about Leonard's potential, but as expected, he needs to stay out of foul trouble. Nice to see he's worked on some post moves though. Egwu might end up being one of the best players that Weber has brought into the program. The guy's played about 2-3 years of organized basketball and he looks like a high major recruit that's been scouted since he was a freshman. Still makes mistakes, and doesn't protect the ball as well as he should, but man he's just got good basketball instincts. I think they'll put it together and make it to the tournament. Next year assuming everyone progresses I think they've got a real shot at being at the top of the league again.
