The Democrat Thread
Balta, if you continue to vote for s*** politicians, you'll just get s*** politicians in the future. At some point people in both parties need to make a stand, regardless of the consequences, and hope that in the future things will be different. My side did the exact wrong thing there (which someone earlier was completely wrong on) - their response to Obama was to get MORE extreme, not more centrist. I enjoy (and agree with) the tea party extreme, but not the religious crazy social extreme that you apparently have to be in order to be a conservative these days.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 26, 2011 -> 10:36 AM) You'd be surprised. Illinois has a player that spent 5 years in jail after robbing a bank And we all know that was a "thank you" to Benn for coming to Illinois.

2011 Video Game Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 26, 2011 -> 12:19 PM) No, I don't think that's ridiculous. When did you get your 360? Anyway, I had a 360. I got a PS3 because it's vastly superior in every way for my needs, and we need not get into this little battle. Clearly, we are both happy with our systems. I have both systems, and prefer the ps3 95% of the time, but one of the biggest advantages of the 360 is the party mode/multiplayer system. It's not even a close race. How Sony has gone 5+ years without addressing their voice chat system is a move I'll never understand. What sucks about this hack is that my wife and I have been unable to watch most of our television shows. We swore off cable and rely on the PSN to purchase the shows we want to watch. Not being able to do that for nearly a week has been pretty difficult.

Anyone watch Game of Thrones? I haven't watched the premiere yet, but the 15 min preview was pretty bad ass. I'm looking forward to checking it out this weekend.

U.S. launches airstrikes on Libya
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 18, 2011 -> 11:32 AM) It's much more expensive to blow up individual satellites than it is to just blow up everyone's. What about the risk of hitting their own or their allies?

U.S. launches airstrikes on Libya
I guess the follow up question there is whether they'd have the means to destroy US only satellites, and specifically ones used by the DoD. But assuming they do, hopefully we have a back up system for all of those smart bombs.

U.S. launches airstrikes on Libya
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 18, 2011 -> 09:15 AM) FWIW that's kind of a good argument in favor of the DoD's budget. Even the other big spenders can't keep up a relatively minor operation for more than a couple of weeks. Then again... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_Challenge_2002 http://www.exile.ru/articles/detail.php?AR...mp;IBLOCK_ID=35 http://fabiusmaximus.wordpress.com/2008/01...nium-challenge/ I always wondered what would happen if the US became TOO reliant on technology. With all this smart technology, what happens if China or some other country has a means of destroying DoD satellites? Who knows if that technology exists, but I wonder if we train for scenarios like that.

U.S. launches airstrikes on Libya
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 17, 2011 -> 04:03 PM) You know full well that teh real outcome is that they resume having the U.S. do everything. But, but, it's a UN effort! It's a coalition! We're just assisting! What a disaster. I can't wait until Obama gets ripped in the press...oh right, he's our savior, so that won't happen.

2010-2011 NBA Thread
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 12:39 PM) Some people are just waiting for something to be able to make a point for their group, something like this is one of them. Based on my friendships in that gay community I can honestly say none of them give a s*** if Kobe Bryant called a ref a f**. http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/...tory?id=6344596 I think it's absolutely hilarious that the word (and all derogatory words these days) are so taboo that you can't even say what word was used when writing a new story about it. How are people supposed to know what word he used if they're reading the article? I mean seriously. Dumb/insensitive/unprofessional for him to say it, just like it was for Ozzie to say it a couple season ago, but it's not the end of the world.

The environment thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 12, 2011 -> 04:58 PM) It's hard to have discussions about the destruction of the social safety net in favor of hefty tax cuts for the wealthy (you cannot objectively argue that this is exactly what Ryan's plan does) with someone who thinks a majority of poor people that utilize said net are stupid, lazy criminals who deserve their lot in life. It's exactly this belief of "capitalism is a human value sorting algorithm" that I've been mocking, and it's embedded in the core of conservative and libertarian economic ideology. Oh I know, and if only government could provide for people in the way you want them too then life would be just roses and candy! All the problems of society would just float away! People would respect each other and play nice with each other. It's such a shame that people in this country are completely and utterly helpless and only government (led by liberals) knows the best way to protect them from that big bad evil world out there. And that prevailing thought has been embedded in core conservative/libertarian ideology because for CENTURIES it's precisely that thinking that has gotten this country to where it's at. Perfect? No. Better than anything else in history? Absolutely.

The environment thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 12, 2011 -> 04:35 PM) Extreme times call for extreme measures, my friend. edit: but I don't see pointing out overwhelming support for Ryan's market evangelist fantasy budget as going for the extremes, just pointing out the ideological support from the tea party for the free market mantra. But you project that support as being the norm of a movement or people. Maybe people just like it because it's one of the first actual attempts at reigning in this f***ing retarded government of ours. That doesn't mean they agree with it 100%. That doesn't mean that he's written the Magna Carta of government spending. It just means he threw out an idea that resonated with people. I dunno why that's such a deplorable thing. And really, he's using bad statistics and estimates. Politicians NEVER do that!

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 12, 2011 -> 04:15 PM) Like I said, free market evangelists. Just look at Ryan's budget proposal that relies on wrong-on-their-face numbers (2.8% unemployment!) from the Heritage Foundation (known for hilarious bad projections in favor of their free market ideology) but is staunchly supported by tea party people. I love how you always go for the extreme in these discussions.

The environment thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 12, 2011 -> 03:49 PM) Call me cynical, but I don't think it ever really existed. Hell, it took decades or even centuries for a giant chunk of Americans to even get voting rights. Yeah, there's that aspect sure, but I think for a while the federal government's role was a lot smaller and local/state governments actually held the most power.
