Seems like the Sox are dead set on developing power hitters. They must feel that it is the hardest thing to obtain in either free agency or the trade market and are working hard to find some through the amateur ranks. No other real explanation I can think of for all of these plus plus power, minus hit tool types.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 10:15 AM) Alexei, Rios, and cash to PIttsburgh for something like: Hanson, Kingham, Tabata, and Mercer. Is that enough? Too much? Barrett Barnes is a guy that the Sox were rumored to be taking with the draft pick that they selected Keon Barnum with. Lambo is old I do believe but he is hitting a ton of homers in their system. Also, Stetson Allie is a guy I'd take a flyer on. He didn't work out as a pitcher but he is killing the ball in A Ball as a hitter. Pittsburgh has a ton of prospects. I would think Polanco, Taillon, and Glasnow are guys that they'd like to keep but other guys should be in play. If they get Alex, what is the driver to keep Polanco? They already have two long term CF types in Marte and McCutchen, and guys like Barnes and Bell coming along that will be ready when Alex's contract is up.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 03:56 PM) Seriously, that's awful. Do it based on net revenue or wins and losses or something else. Market size is garbage. Its a combination. The criteria for the first group of picks is 10 smallest markets and 10 lowest revenues. The second group of picks is the teams from the first group plus any team that received revenue sharing money. St Louis is just an incredibly well run organization to put up the type of success they have in a market of that size. It sucks that the rich get richer in this case as the Tigers did last year, but you can't penalize a team for being successful when their environmental factors suggest they shouldn't be.

Peavy to Boston, Avisail Garcia + 3 low lv specs to Sox

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 09:25 AM) Because waiting worked so well with Ryan Dempster last year. Rangers want Garza in time to start tomorrow. Talking about moving on to Bud Norris if they can't get a deal done soon. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 09:22 AM) Obviously, the Pirates aren't going to take on a lot of money, so the Sox would be eating a significant portion of these contracts, so if it's for second tier prospects, I don't see how it helps the Sox get better now or in the future. If the Sox are including money, it wont be for second tier guys. The Pirates will have enough money to take on those contracts without any money from the White Sox thanks to the new TV deal, but if they want payroll flexibility to add more, it will cost them some of their better prospects.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 09:05 AM) The issue with the Pirates, if I had to guess, is they would be willing to move better prospects if the party they were trading with picked up salary. If the Sox were to move Rios/Ramirez, that's $22 million or so in salary just next year? And another $7-8 million this year still? Then they'd still be taking on at least $12 million in salary for '15 if you include the two buyouts. My guess is that is more than the Pirates will be willing to take on, but considering the lack of other options out there, it might be something they are willing to do if we take on, say half of that money in exchange for higher quality prospects. I think this might actually be one of the best fits out there. I think this is where the Sox willingness to pick up payroll will really help, especially with the amount that is coming off the books at the end of the year.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 11:47 PM) I like what I read about him. If LA truly has no room for him through 2017, then send LA Alexei, Rios and Crain. Would that do it? If not give them Peavy instead of Crain and get in return Joc plus another prospect. If they don't want an outfielder in Rios, then give them Dunn instead of Rios. What is a fair return for Joc? He sounds like a prospect the Sox might want to acquire while there's a realistic chance of getting him. They definitely do not have room for Rios with four quality OF already. The Dodgers system is pretty thin. It goes about three deep and then drops off, so the centerpiece would need to be one of Zach Lee, Pederson, or Seager. Seager probably ends up at 3B like his brother eventually given his size. I would pass on Lee, but some people like him as a prospect. I think Pederson and two low level guys would be an appropriate return for Peavy when he proves healthy.

The biggest issue I see is that the way the arbitration/team control system is structured most players are at the tail end of their prime years when they hit free agency. St Louis' front office looks like a group of geniuses for letting Pujols walk. On the flip side, Miguel Cabrera is signed to a relatively team friendly contract. When he hits free agency in two years some team is going to overspend for the later half of his 30's.

QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 07:20 AM) Unless a major league ready SS is part of the deal, who plays SS for the Sox if Hahn trades Alexi? Angel Sanchez or Tyler Greene most likely.

QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 08:41 AM) FWIW, Marc Hulet at MLB Trade Rumors has a few tidbits. Saying basically Hanson, Polanco and Glasgow would be off the table. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/07/pros...trade-bait.html Except in a blockbuster, which it could be considered. Also, it is pretty much just his speculation, nothing there with any sources to back up his opinion.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 05:45 PM) The Rockies have the 1st Competitive Balance pick. Would anyone be willing to trade Crain for that pick or something and that pick? Would Colorado even do that? No. I would trade Dunn and cash to the Orioles for their pick though.
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 03:54 PM) Detroit and Pittsburgh both traded theirs last season. Detroit swapped theirs with Miami as part of a bigger deal. The Pirates gave up their pick for Gaby Sanchez who the Marlins were planning on non-tendering. So that still doesn't make them seem to be too entirely valuable in a deal. More or less a throw in.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 02:08 PM) This article is a Cubs article from bleacher nation. Today at 3pm central time is the Competitive Balance Lottery. Obviously, the White Sox will not be receiving a competitive balance pick. What does everybody think about the Sox potentially trading for Competitive Balance Picks? There may be a few contenders that receive picks. I am always all for having extra draft picks. What does everyone else think? http://www.bleachernation.com/2013/07/17/t...-can-be-traded/ I would take whatever we can get, though it is really hard to place a value on a pick when they have never really been dealt before.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 01:21 PM) I've been thinking about this. I still say there's no way in hell anybody takes Dunn off the Sox hands. Sox paid him an insane amount of money. He'll still be here striking out until the final day of that deal. The Sox did not pay him an insane amount of money. Ryan Howard makes an insane amount of money. He is not untradeable, but would need to go to the right situation to be successful. Trading Dunn is not going to net a top ten prospect, but he does have value.
-
He was successful out of the pen last season and he is a free agent at the end of the season, so he they wont be blocking Rondon long term. His contract also makes it likely that the Tigers would not have to give up as much to acquire him.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 02:46 PM) I don't think Olt is a good fit there -- they've got Baez and Bryant as long-term 3B guys, and Rizzo locked up at first. Can't have too much depth, sure, but I'd think they would prefer a different type of guy. I think Perez is probably the centerpiece of Garza deal with the Rangers.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 12:18 PM) Oh man, Dee Gordon is so bad. That would be a really bad trade for us if Reed is included. The other two are plenty good, Gordon is just a throw in. That is some good talent, Pedersen is their #2 and Garcia is #6.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 10:25 AM) Olt or bust. He might not make it, but he is close to the show and has the kind of impact potential that could make this rebuild happen in a hot hurry. .211 in the offensive charged AAA, I think I'd rather try elsewhere. Might as well bring Josh Fields back.
-
QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 10:13 AM) No chance they move all 3 of those kids for Rios. I could see negotiations centering around the 3. The Rangers would maybe offer Brinson and Ramirez while the Sox would want Sardinas and Brinson or Ramirez type deal. Then it would probably end up being something completely different. I would take a package of Odor, Hanser Alberto, and Nick Williams and call it a day. Alberto gives the team a glove first SS that can hold the spot until Anderson develops, Odor can be a prospective replacement for Beckham once he hits free agency, and Williams gives the system a LH bat to play opposite Hawkins.

QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 08:42 AM) Guys, Oakland outbid EVERYONE. It's paying off for them, but it could have easily been a disaster. s*** happens, you gotta move on to the next thing.... I believe that Oakland wasn't the highest bidder, rather they structured the contract in a way that would allow him to reach free agency sooner than any other team. He signed a four year deal and then will go to free agency rather than having to go through arbitration. He has been a disappointment though, relegated to LF and hitting at a pretty low contact rate. He probably could have used some time in the minors to adjust to American baseball.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 08:35 AM) Definitely a possibility for Peavy if he proves his health, but much less so since they picked up Nolasco. I could see a package of Reed and Ramirez for Pederson, Dee Gordon, and Onelki Garcia. Lets the Dodgers move Hanley to 3B and put Uribe in a UT role, and gets them the upgrade to Brandon League that they really need. Gordon can plug in to SS for the rest of the season and let him try to get things figured out.

QUOTE (Knuckles @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 10:55 AM) IF it's true the Biogenesis suspensions will roll out next week you will see a lot of action on the trade front right then. From what has been speculated, once the suspensions are handed out, they will be immediately appealed and likely won't be enforced until 2014. We are still probably another week away from the market starting to get hot. Garza will be moved this weekend, which will expand the teams that are looking at Sox pitching. Hahn doesn't need to do anything until someone meets his price or until July 31st when he can decide to take the best of what has been offered or try to make deals through the waiver wire.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 10:18 AM) For cheap with an option for the 2nd year. The Reds did this with Madson, which backfired, then the Angels did the same thing, which also hasn't worked out. Usually it would be a low AAV contract with incentives for IP and a team friendly option.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 09:52 AM) I am a big believer in the truth lying in the middle somewhere. This is a team that was in first place as late as two weeks to go in the season last year. Now they are one of the worst teams in baseball? That sort of decline isn't right. That isn't natural. Age decline happens in stages, not in a lemming style cliff jump. Also it hasn't just been the old players. Thats probably true. But PK was this guy for the second half of last season as well, which is part of the reason the Sox could not hold off the Tiggers. I think Viciedo is just having an off year, as has happened to many players. They also lost a lot production with AJ's career season last year to Tylers production this year. I would agree there are a variety of factors that have caused the decline, but luck is the least of them. I just don't see any indications that this team will be better next year with another year under their belts as there are very few hitters on the rise.

QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 10:05 PM) I don't understand how Micah Johnson isn't a top 10 prospect in this system. He's one of the few players who has put up solid (and in some areas, even gaudy) numbers at an age appropriate level, and even earned a promotion. In a system that has not been short on disappointment, he's been a bright spot. He put those numbers up against low level competition with much of the league 2-3 years younger than him, and he doesn't have a position defensively - 20 errors in 78 games - OUCH. If he continues to hit at AA next season and can figure things out in the field he will shoot up the rankings.
