QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 02:36 PM) I just dont get why people even care what the Media does. The media is there to make money, not to report the news. As capitalists it should be understood that what they report is based on their desire to make money, not on their desire to give information to the public. As such any news report should always be looked at with extreme skepticism as its main purpose is to generate money, not to inform people. So why is Obama getting headlines for nonsense? Because that is what is selling right now. I fully concur.

I will gladly eat crow about Podsednik and Colon. I thought both of those guys would be on the DL at this point in time based on the last several years.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 27, 2009 -> 05:32 PM) But we'll never know because they weren't even considered for the job. No, we do know that she is the most qualified person regardless of race and gender for the reasons I already gave on the previous page. Bush and Clinton never considered black judges for their Supreme Court appointments. Does that mean their nominees were not qualified? Of course not.

QUOTE (BearSox @ May 27, 2009 -> 03:48 PM) I'll probably get blasted for this, but white males are the biggest group affected by racism right now, IMO. All these politicians want a world where race doesn't factor into anything, but in reality, they are doing the opposite. It is extremely tough to advance in the work place now for White Males. You are hoping for that promotion to vice president of blah blah blah or hoping to become a partner? If you are white and a male, good luck. Hell, we saw with that case of the firefighters which Sotomayor was on. Those firefighters got screwed out of a promotion. We even saw it with the Sotomayor nomination for the Supreme Court. A white male was never even in consideration. All this PC, affirmative action, hate crimes crap that is aimed at getting rid of racism and biases is complete BS, as they are racist themselves. Sorry for the hijack. I agree with you about those firefighters. Many of those programs are problematic and need to be addressed. There was nobody more qualified than Sotomayor for the job though. She has already been appointed, confirmed, promoted, and confirmed over a 17 year span on the federal bench. I don't think any more qualified white males got screwed over by her nomination.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ May 27, 2009 -> 11:13 AM) She was nominated by Bush I per the recommendation of Moynihan, who along with D'Amato split seven nominations. As for her jurisprudence: 5 of 7 cases she ruled that reached the U.S. Supreme Court were overturned: 2 by 5-4 majority....1 by a 6-3 majority....1 by a 7-2 majority....and 1 by an 8-0 majority...1 case is pending..Ricci......1 case was upheld but the Court rejected her reasoning. Link: http://oneconservativevoice.blogspot.com/2...by-supreme.html. Yes it is a conservative link. Does that mean you think she is not qualified?

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 27, 2009 -> 08:12 AM) Whenever people bring up demographics and the SCOTUS (i.e., Sotomayor is Hispanic), and they say things like "the most qualified person needs to be selected, not someone based on their gender/ethnicity" why is it assumed there is only one? There's dozens of possibilities in reality, and if the president wants to, say, choose a woman, he's not at all excluding potentially "better qualified" candidates. The whole thing is subjective anyway. I just find that annoying. It makes it sound that choosing a justice who is a minority or a woman automatically means that's why they were chosen, before looking at their qualifications. QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 27, 2009 -> 08:32 AM) Candidly, I have a hard time with your comment, because you know damn well this pick was for exactly the reasons you're questioning. This was a wedge pick by Obama, he knows it, the GOP knows it, and she'll get through it without much of a fight - and it has VERY LITTLE to do with "qualifications". Sotomayor is as qualified as any other serious candidate for the court. She has had more judicial experience than Alito, Roberts, Breyer, Souter, Ginsburg, Thomas, Kennedy, O'Connor, Scalia, White, and Stevens--all current or former Supreme Court Justices--had when they were nominated. She was nominated to be a federal judge by Bush, and then unanimously confirmed for that position. Then was promoted to the appeals court by Clinton, and confirmed for a second time.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ May 26, 2009 -> 11:29 AM) Probably less than the Democratic filibuster of Hispanic Judge Miguel Estrada. Mainstream Media= The Republicans dare not filibuster an hispanic woman! Miguel Estrada successfully filibustered by the Dems= MSM SHHHHHHHHHHH! Trent Lott delayed any up or down vote on Sotomayor's nomination for well over a year. As the '98 mid-terms got closer, they broke and let her have a vote b/c some Republicans didn't want to look hostile/obstructionist before voters back home. Democrats delayed Estrada's vote, and unlike Sotomayor, he chose to withdraw his nomination.

There are several tenable arguments why trading PK to the Mets should not happen. One of those reasons should not be he is playing well now.

Rumsfeld Quoted Bible on War Briefings
Chet Lemon replied to HuskyCaucasian's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Texsox @ May 17, 2009 -> 10:24 AM) The quotes are, and among other things, wisdom and thoughts from previous generations. Instead of retrieving quotes from previous generations, the Secretary of Defense should have made sure there were enough soldiers, ample body armor, post-war strategies, and a legitimate connection between Iraq and the 9/11 hijackers. -

GOP, RNC to rebrand Democrats as 'Socialists'
Chet Lemon replied to HuskyCaucasian's topic in The Filibuster
Many Republicans already use this term already, so why call a special session? Many Republicans refer to the Democratic Party as the 'Democrat Party' and many Republicans called their political opponents socialists ad infinitum last fall. -
QUOTE (lostfan @ May 11, 2009 -> 02:43 PM) Cut taxes not defense? That's f***ing retarded. Where do they think the deficit (that they blame him for) comes from? Zero taxes. Don't cut defense. 'Nuff said. Everyone else are communists.

Betemit reminded me a little of Timo Perez last night playing 1B.

I give props to Souter. He did the job for 19 years, decided to leave it, and will have a life after retirement.

Podsednik/Nix Recalled, Anderson to DL, Owens Demoted
Chet Lemon replied to chisox2334's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Why would Ozzie believe that Nix is better offensively vs. lefties than Getz when Nix is 0-17 w/ three walks against lefties in his extremely short MLB career. -
QUOTE (bmags @ May 2, 2009 -> 03:38 PM) Ugh, Alito and Thomas. Haven't been a fan of SCOTUS since the 90s. I'm a Potter Stewart man, myself. Potter Stewart was a king. My favorite dissent of his was when he agreed individual state's could legally prohibit the use of contraceptives. That was true states' rights; not at all like the so-called states' rights people of today.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 1, 2009 -> 11:39 AM) Yeah but what if he reverts back to his 2005 form? Just pretend for a second that the last 3 years never happened, Scott Podsednik is coming off a season in which he hit .290 with a .351, 50+ stolen bases and led his team to a World Series Championship! Why wouldn't you hit him leadoff? Ugh, nostalgia can make people wacky. And sometime during the last three years he gained the skills needed to play Major League CF.

QUOTE (BearSox @ May 1, 2009 -> 12:18 AM) Give me a break. MSNBC is extremely hateful and will continually attack anyone who disagrees with them and refuse to insult Obama. There's a reason why they are in the s***ter. If that were even .0001 true, they would not have Pat Buchanan, Joe Scarborough, and Tom DeLay on their network every day.
-
QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Apr 30, 2009 -> 09:53 AM) Scott Podsednik has done more in his career than either Jerry Owens or Dewayne Wise. The Devil you know is better than the Devil you don't...and that pretty much would sum up this move. Interesting take. However the devil we have known was a player made of glass. Now he's more of a player made of cracked glass.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 28, 2009 -> 12:24 PM) he votes dem anyways. doesn't matter. On most domestic/social issues, yes. He went to the mat hard for Clarence Thomas and Sam Alito's Supreme Court confirmations though. This move was clearly done to win re-election in 2010 as he would have went down in defeat to Toomey in the primary. I guess he could have tried to pull a Lieberman if that scenario played out.

On a related note, is there any free parking available on the street (in the afternoon)? I can remember parking for free on 35th st. about a mile west of the park, but I don't remember if that was only possible for night games. Thanks for any help.

Anyone with tickets yesterday or today read this:
Chet Lemon replied to knightni's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Since I purchased a ticket for last night's game, I would not be able to use them for tomorrow's 4:05 game, correct? -
QUOTE (BearSox @ Apr 25, 2009 -> 08:54 AM) Well, the GOP had a brilliant scientist from England flown in, but the dirty Dems blocked him from speaking because he'd make Al Gore look like the big fat lying fraud he is. Why the hell should we be consulting with Europeans to make American environmental laws? Watch yourself or else people will throw tea bags at you for deferring to Europeans about American policy. Good thing the GOP has consistently protected brilliant Europeans from the dirty Dems.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 23, 2009 -> 02:27 PM) Meh, nutjobs are nutjobs. That's about 20% on either end of the political spectrum you can factor out immediately in any kind of discussion like this. You mean that full page ad I read in the Chicago Tribune a while back asserting the current President was not born in the United States could be a little inaccurate?
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 23, 2009 -> 02:31 PM) Yes, for a very short time. It wasn't long before all the conspiracy bulls*** went through the roof. And without the political capital you speak of, Congress wouldn't have voted for Iraq. I understand that, but I also know for a fact that there were a lot of people very unhappy with Bush and that never, ever changed, 9/11 included. There's a lot of them here. I maintain that Congress would have voted for Iraq without political capital b/c approximately 70% of the country favored it at that the time of the vote.
