My understanding of this based on the campaign is that X (# of service hrs.) is required to receive Y (college scholarship or tax credits, or ???). Since Y (the incentive) will likely be a compromise between the White House and the Congress, it has not been placed on the change.gov site. At this point the incentives have not been determined, but requirements will be necessary to receive these incentives.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 02:20 PM) Lugar is like a thousand years old, I wonder if that's why, or is it just that he doesn't want to serve in a Democratic administration? He would be highly qualified for the job though and IMO the best pick. He will be in the Senate until 2013, so age is probably not his primary reason.

I heard on the news that Lugar told a reporter he would not accept the Sec. of State job if offered.

They still have not finished counting votes in Oregon's Senate race. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 11:06 AM) So how many Supreme Court retirements do you think we get in 2009? 2? 3? One. I predict it will be Ginsburg. She's a solid Democrat and left-leaning Justice. While Stevens and Souter are "liberals" relative to the current composition of the court, they are more or less unpredictable iconoclasts. I would be extremely surprised if Stevens and Souter retired during the first year of an Obama presidency. I think Stevens wants to get the record for longest-serving Justice, which means another two years to accomplish that goal.

Stevens is up by roughly 4000 votes with 99% precincts reporting.

If McCain loses PA, it is over. Obama will win IA, NM, and CO.

QUOTE (sox4lifeinPA @ Oct 25, 2008 -> 09:41 AM) Personally, I think the biggest issues we are facing are: need for alternative power(solar panels on every home, wind harvesting fields in the midwest, natural gas conversions for cars) and taking care of our troops coming home from Iraq(GI Bill, top notch health care facilities, long term care and mental health care) Both candidates would be good one of those but not both. There is no candidate for me, so honestly, I don't care who wins. I'll probably vote McCain, so the carnage isn't too bad. I'm not trying to campaign for Obama b/c this is not the appropriate thread, but I urge you to re-watch the second debate. When asked by Brokaw to prioritize these three issues: health care, energy, and entitlement programs, Obama clearly stated that energy was going to be the first priority. McCain said he would do those three simulataneously, which I don't see happening with the opposition in charge of Congress. Unless he proposes reforms on those issues further to the left than most Republicans in Congress, which I also don't see happening.

QUOTE (vandy125 @ Oct 24, 2008 -> 04:09 PM) DC was the only other place that Mondale got electoral votes. Here is the map. But the question was clearly asking if Reagan won every state except for MN. DC is not a state, therefore Reagan won every state except the Land of 10,000 Lakes. My '08 prediction: Obama wins all the states Kerry won + NM, IA, CO, NV, and OH. Those are in order of my confidence in each prediction. Percentage-wise in terms of my confidence: 99% about NM & IA. 90% about CO. 80% about NV, and 60% about OH.

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Oct 24, 2008 -> 01:38 PM) I know it won't happen but remember the electoral map when Reagan won in 1984. Didn't he win every state except Minnesota, Mondale's home state. Indeed he did

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Oct 24, 2008 -> 09:48 AM) This could be the most pointless conversation being held at this time. Icould care less where her clothes came from. I know the government wastes a-lot more of this money than anything. To me I kind of like the idea that she does not have a fancy enough wardrobe. This is as pointless as anything covered in the media thus far. I think the reason it was covered was because of how Palin described herself (i.e. modest hockey mom), then disproving that by spending 150k on clothes, 20k on makeup, etc. I agree it is a stupid issue, and it is not important to me. Ultimately, the media have been doing it for years, such as when Gore was lambasted for days by the media for getting a fashion consultant to make him appear less stuffy. Then Clark was made fun of by the media in the '04 primaries becuase he wore a sweater to one of the debates.

I read that Trib blurb earlier. PK for Cain wouldn't happen. PK straight up for Sanchez could happen. I would imgaine PK + Allen + Ely likely would bring Cain over. We are talking about Saeban here.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Oct 10, 2008 -> 06:23 PM) uhhh, the Democrats have been saying that claims that Obama is a Muslim is a smear. The Democrats have repeated over and over that Obama is not Muslim, as if all Muslims are terrorists. change the religion here and you tell me how it sounds: "These smears on Obama are false, Obama is not a Muslim" "These smears on Obama are false, Obama is not a Jew" The Democrats seem to think Muslim and good person are mutually exclusive. QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 8, 2008 -> 10:10 PM) Can anyone imagine how Michelle Obama would be treated if she was acting "folksy"? How would she be treated if she used to belong to a secessionist political party?

Would the Mets have any interest in Dye? Dye for Daniel Murphy is a move I would like to see. Murphy came into the Mets org. as a 3B. Obviously he was blocked by Wright, so they switched him over to 2B and LF while in the minors. He got the call to the big show this past August, where he started every subsequent MLB game in LF.

I would like to see Russ Springer come on board for 1-year deal if here were willing to take that. Sure, he is old, but would be optimal primarily against righties. He would be a huge upgrade over Wassermann in this department.
