  1. wtf is Karros talking about? Ash is a whole lot more durable than maple. If maple bats were so durable, there would be no discussion about banning them! They should make the players use composite/laminated bats. Their durability is close to that of an aluminum bats.
  2. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 28, 2008 -> 03:26 AM) I don't think I've ever argued against a .330 hitter. That's a bit extreme, seeing as how all of 5 players in the majors are hitting over .327 currently, while there are already 5 players with 20 homers in late June. You are basically saying you'd rather have Joe Mauer, not considering he's a catcher, over Joe Crede. Thanks, I had no idea. To follow your guidelines, I'll take a 40 homer hitter that gets 170 hits a season. Would you rather have Ryan Braun DHing for you or Joe Mauer? Well, you said you'd take a guy who can hit 30 homers over a guy who can hit 150 singles. Did you expect the guy with 150 singles not to have any extra base hits? And as for a DH, who wouldn't take the guy who can hit 40 homers with a .290+ average?
  3. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 28, 2008 -> 03:45 AM) a .275 average would be a .320 slugging, which would be a .685 OPS. OPS is more important for leadoff hitters than a lot of people realize, and .685 is absolutely god awful. Even considering that, he hasn't hit this year - probably because the Angels outfield is absolutely loaded and he hasn't had many opportunities - but I just don't think he's a good bet going forward and I don't think he's the right guy to leadoff for the Sox next year. Not only that, but you'd be stepping down from a .900+ OPS in Thome to a .725 or lower OPS in Willits. I'd rather give David Cook a shot in CF rather than acquire Willits and depend upon him to leadoff for the Sox next season, and that's not even considering the possibility that Anderson is still on the team. Willits is overrated as hell because he can draw a walk. A glorified 4th outfielder. OPS my ass. When you have a leadoff hitter, you want someone who can get on base, and has some speed to steal a few bags and advance from 1st to 3rd on certain hits.
  4. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jun 27, 2008 -> 04:00 PM) That's the best you could come up with for next year? As I mentioned earlier, there is almost 25 million coming off the books next year in this situation, and even more with Crede gone in this scenario. Aside from maybe looking up Danks long term, there is no way the payroll is dropping that much. Have you seen next year's free agent class? Pretty weak. There will be some good pitchers on the market, but I don't see us going that route as we already 4 spots locked up with some guys coming up. There some good bullpen arms to, but I don't see us spending big money there after last off-season. Teixeria, not happening. Milton Bradley? Too much of a not job. The only big name player I see us possibly signing is Furcal, but I think the org. has Ramirez set to be the SS of the future.
  5. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 28, 2008 -> 12:50 AM) I would have a problem with Willits as the leadoff hitter for the Sox. If he doesn't hit .300, he's not going to score many runs. I'd rather see Alexei leadoff than Willits next season. It's weird how Soxtalk falls in love with certain players that are quite overrated. Luis Castillo is another. OBP is important and all, but it's not the end all be all for a leadoff hitter. I disagree, as if he bats .275 with an OBP of .365, I think he'd still be plenty productive. As someone else said earlier, I'd love Willits in a platoon type role.
  6. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 27, 2008 -> 11:13 PM) I'd bet that 30 homers is certainly going to be more productive than 150 singles. I seriously doubt that. If you are a decent power hitter, you'd have 20 homers, 25-30 doubles, and maybe 1 or 2 triples. Hell, lets say said player had 150 singles and only 30 extra base hits. That'd give him 180 base hits in lets 550 AB's, giving the player a batting average of .327. I'm sorry, but I'd take the guy who bats .327 and is a hitting machine (This player surely could have gotten 200+ hits if he was a decent power hitter) over the guy who hits 30 homers but for a lower average.
  7. Quentin is a man-beast, too bad I have to miss the rest of this game...
  8. How about this for next year's lineup: 1. Willits, CF (trade?) 2. Pierzynski, C (not in love with AJ here) 3. Quentin, RF 4. Konerko, 1B 5. Dye, DH (you could swap Konerko and Dye) 6. Swisher, LF 7. Fields, 3B 8. Ramirez, SS 9. Richar/Getz/FA Signing, 2B (FA signing that could be ideal would be Loretta, Grudz, etc. that could platoon with either Getz or Richar)
  9. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 27, 2008 -> 12:39 PM) Here's a nauseating article. Enjoy! http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/ar...b&fext=.jsp The quote underneath the picture: Yeah, um no.
  10. I don't understand the Pablo - Getz comparison at all.
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 27, 2008 -> 07:38 AM) Thome's been better than Konerko all 3 years he's been here. He can't be traded obviously, but seeing how he hits left handed and he's been better than Konerko, I wouldn't automatically label him the odd man out. I also think it's very reasonable and rather probable that all 3 will be back. Whoa now. In 06, both Thome and Konerko were fantastic. Can't really say which one was better (unless you judge that soley on OPS). Thome was better in 07 though, but this season they've both sucked. If the three big base cloggers are back next season, it will have been a very bad move. With Thome being 6 years older than Konerko, and 4 years older than Dye, and not showing nearly as much production as he has in the past, the move is simple to me.
  12. The sick scumbags get to keep their lives after they ruin the lives of innocent little kids... yeah, that makes sense.
  13. I really don't see how we can go into next season with the same three big base cloggers. So judging by age and production (or lack thereof), Thome is the odd man out. I love Thome, as a lefty hitter growing up, I loved to watch him hit. However, Thome doesn't have it anymore and isn't worth the starting role. The only way I'd keep Thome if his option doesn't vest is if he is willing to take a reduced role as more of a platoon player. Looking at next years free agent class, there's nothing to get excited about either...
  14. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 26, 2008 -> 02:02 AM) except, of course, that Juan Uribe actually does bring gold glove defense at SS. I look at this two ways. #1, if Cabrera goes down, are you happy replacing him with Ramirez and then letting Ozuna/Richar/Getz take over at 2B? #2, if you get rid of Uribe, who can you replace him with that fits that role as a great defensive supersub with power? if you get rid of Pablo, who can you replace him with that fits his role as a solid average bat on the bench and player you can let sit at 3B, SS, and 2B? To me, Pablo is the clear cut choice to go. If you replace Uribe, you have like 2-3 different Ozuna-esque players in the minors; if you get rid of Ozuna, you have like 2-3 different Ozuna-esque players in the minors. Yes, because we'd still get more production out of 2B with decent D as well.
  15. Ideally, we send Russel back to Charlotte and carry only 11 pitchers. However, Ozzie said that already isn't happening. So, I agree with Gage on this one, Anderson is the likely one to be sent down. It'd be stupid to carry only 1 backup INF (not including Hall) but 2 backup OF's. Let Anderson get playing time everyday in Charlotte and work on his swing. However, if the decision came between Ozuna and Uribe, you gotta keep Ozuna. While Uribe does provide better D, how often will we need a defensive replacement for Ramirez, Crede, or Cabrera? And whoever is saying Uribe is a better bat than Ozuna is simply crazy. Uribe is a garbage hitter, one of the worst in the league. Sure he has some pop, but last time I checked, we have plenty of power already in the lineup. Ozuna provides the team with more good AB's, put that ball on the ball (only 3 K's in 60+ AB's), can bunt, and can hit and run. While he has also lost a step due to that injury, he's still faster than Uribe and a much better base runner.
  16. I was hoping for the rabbit one to have something to do with "Of Mice and Men."
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 09:15 PM) Delmyn hit one 5 feet in the air his first time up, and 400 feet his next time up. Delwyn Young is an extremely under-rated prospect.
  18. Baltimore can beat the cubs, but we get swept fairly easily?
  19. About damn time. I remember one time I tuned in and he was speculating about nuns doing stuff they shouldn't do with themselves (if you catch my drift). I was never a big fan of his, but after I heard that, I would turn off/switch stations if I heard him.
  20. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 01:45 PM) Plus, I've mentioned this before, but you don't necessarily have to be that good to get drafted in the latter rounds. At that point organizations may be looking for sure fire signings to fill organizational depth needs and if you indicate a willingness to play in the minors and have some contacts they'll take you. I had a few people I played baseball with get drafted for those exact reasons and they were not in any way shape or form what I'd consider minor league "talent". They didn't even start on our bad high school teams. My question is... how would you let a team/scout know that you'd be an easy sign?
  21. I don't think Anderson is much, but he's a fine defensive replacement/4th OF.
  22. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 12:14 PM) I love Danks and he's been great but it really would be nice if he could pitch into the 7th inning some time. That's the one thing that's holding him back a bit.. It's not his fault he gets taken out after 6 innings every freakin time.
  23. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 08:25 AM) But signing doesn't preclude Long from going to college, just playing college baseball. There have been other players who have gone to college while playing in the minors, kids who have played other sports in college while playing minor league baseball. The way the college game is played now it just prolongs the learning curve for players when they finally do go pro. That is correct. I believe Benson played some minor league ball for the Dodgers while he was at Texas, and Dennis Dixon with the Braves when he was at Oregon.
  24. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 06:05 AM) How many threads will you post the same exact thing? We'll have to put you on spam filter. I've seen the way brother! I dare not question Obama or any democrat anymore. I shall try to help convert people to see the light of Obama.
  25. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 23, 2008 -> 01:51 PM) The difference is that you don't see McCain's name there, nor do you see the altered eagle with Obama's logo across the chest. Obama turned this into his own doing. This is a stupid arguement, though. Didn't you realize that McCain and the republicans are always wrong though? Whatever the messiah does must be correct.
