Alpha, I understand your point, but I look at those residuals like an insurance agent getting renewals, salesreps getting reorders, or baseball players getting deferred compensation, or a waitress on tips. They have a multistage compensation package which is understood by all. I am certain the writers would like to take it all up front, but the studios would rather lower their risk against stinko projects. So this deferred compensation lowers the studios initial investment and hopefully motivates those with a financial interest in the finished project to perhaps work a little harder. The old we'll give you half now and half later *if* it is successful.

In three or four years the market may be at $12 mil for an average starting CF. The overall MLB average is pushing 3 mil. Here are your AL CFers, rank them and decide if Rowand at $12 for the next five years isn't realistic basewd on projections and what other guys are signing for. The PR risk is if the trade sucks or they think they received less than fair market. Sox fans went nuts regarding Garland, not because of where, but for who. In fact, the PR is less risky than leaving him in their division or even in the NL. Better off in the AL.

It's an impossible balance. We tell people to never forget where they came from. Stay grounded. We also tell them to ditch their hometown and childhood friends. Who are you going to trust, your new "friends" who are hangin with you because of your new celebrity and cash, or the guys who hung out with you when you were a nobody? Jeez that is tough. And what prepares these kids for becoming instant millionaires? The league has a program put together by old white guys, I'm certain that's relevant. Clearly they need to be held responsible a lot earlier in their lives, but that is not the whole answer.
