  1. Alpha, I understand your point, but I look at those residuals like an insurance agent getting renewals, salesreps getting reorders, or baseball players getting deferred compensation, or a waitress on tips. They have a multistage compensation package which is understood by all. I am certain the writers would like to take it all up front, but the studios would rather lower their risk against stinko projects. So this deferred compensation lowers the studios initial investment and hopefully motivates those with a financial interest in the finished project to perhaps work a little harder. The old we'll give you half now and half later *if* it is successful.
  2. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 02:46 AM) I hadn't eaten a peanut butter and jelly sanwhich in about ten years...until last week. Since then, I've had about 675 of them. Then it will be another ten years before you will want one. Chunky or smooth? Grape or strawberry?

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 09:26 PM) Holy s*** - I did finally catch an HD hockey game... what a HUGE difference. You can see the skate lines in the ice after they clean the sheet between periods. f***ing sweet. Damn, I may rethink my decision to be the last person in America without a HD TV
  6. In three or four years the market may be at $12 mil for an average starting CF. The overall MLB average is pushing 3 mil. Here are your AL CFers, rank them and decide if Rowand at $12 for the next five years isn't realistic basewd on projections and what other guys are signing for. 7. QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 03:18 PM) I've been audited before and no one told me I was doing it wrong. State or IRS audit? The IRS doesn't care what the states are doing. Actually, I'd pick the state with the lowest rate. My sympathies for the audit.
  8. QUOTE(Linnwood @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 03:03 PM) I didn't realize there were special laws for performers and athletes. I stand corrected. Actually no "special" laws, just selected collections. The average salesperson or field service rep is never worried about, but guys with multiple zeros per game or performance . . . KA KA CHING!
  9. QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 02:56 PM) My company was headquartered in Indiana originally, now it's in Connecticut. I believe that you pay the state tax of the state of your home residence. I'm not certain by what authority one state would have to demand companies operating in other states to collect taxes? This was really thrashed out a few years back when California (successfully) went after Michael Jordan. The state can tax wages earned in that state, they cannot offer immunity to it's citizens to not pay taxes in other states, which is what tax by residency would be creating.
  10. Anderson is the best option "for the money".
  11. QUOTE(buckweaver @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 09:56 AM) Perhaps they just listed all prospects alphabetically. At first I thought you were joking, and it was funny, but looking at the guys before and after, I think you may be right. But you aren't, so back to
  12. The Cubs would make a deal with the Sox and vice versa if it made sense to them. What PR risk? That Sox fans would suddenly switch sides? That Cub fans would follow? The PR risk is if the trade sucks or they think they received less than fair market. Sox fans went nuts regarding Garland, not because of where, but for who. In fact, the PR is less risky than leaving him in their division or even in the NL. Better off in the AL.
  13. QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 12:42 PM) The Red Sox are idiots. they are a good team and a good org, but they are idiots. Asking for 3 prospects for Coco Crisp is lunacy. I don't think I'd even give them 2 prospects, unless one was a dud. I'd give them one good prospecst and one slug...I'd maybe deal Adam Russell/Oneli Perez + Heath Phillips for him, but if they are thinking of a deal like Gio, Sweeney, and Shelby they can go play in traffic. Epstein is on acid. Someone giving them that is lunacy, asking is smart. You have to start somewhere.
  14. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 12:15 PM) Well...they aren't really worth that, themselves. The players as a whole are probably worth what they are paid, but the older players are peaching some of the value off the younger players who have no choice but to play for peanuts. Technicality, I know. Just saying. And I think there are at least two definitions of "worth it". One is a guy whose stats fall favorably with the middle of the salaries for that position. Sox fans never want to have the highest paid player in that stat range. The second is the player whose popularity transends his stats and sells tickets. The front office and sales departments are drooling, the manager is fuming.
  15. No player mentioned is worth the money that other teams are willing to pay them?! Who could possibly imagine being able to pay a baseball player over one million dollars a year? Soxtalk 1979 learning Nolan Ryan signed a new contract with the Astros Who could possibly imagine being able to pay a baseball player over three million dollars a year? Soxtalk 1981 Learning Dave Winfield signed a new contract with the Yankees Who could possibly imagine being able to pay a baseball player over ten million dollars a year? Soxtalk 1997 learning Albert Belle signed a new contract with the White Sox Who could possibly imagine being able to pay a baseball player over twenty million dollars a year? Soxtalk 2000 learning A-Rod signed a new contract with the Rangers
  16. I am less pessimistic about Anderson. Plus the cash savings can be used to plug holes elsewhere

  18. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 10:46 AM) Lee Smith and Goose Gossage deserve some love. Recognize the closers! I also put Blyleven and Tommy John down, along with Tim Raines. Plenty of great players on this list. All the pitchers you mention deserve. I never really thought of Raines as a HoF player, but now that you mention it, it wouldn't be the worse pick ever.
  19. QUOTE(Whitewashed in '05 @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 11:06 AM) Oh definitely, money is the best cure. And that is what will console K-Dub and JR when they see Anderson patrolling center . . .

  22. http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/14713468/detail.html Stuff like this, rarely reported nationally, does so much to protect our environment.
  23. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 15, 2007 -> 11:41 AM) That's why I don't drink bottled water - the bottle itself. I do, often, when I am picking up something to drink at a C-store. I figure there isn't much of an environmental difference in a coke bottle versus a water bottle. There is a difference in my internal system.
  24. It's an impossible balance. We tell people to never forget where they came from. Stay grounded. We also tell them to ditch their hometown and childhood friends. Who are you going to trust, your new "friends" who are hangin with you because of your new celebrity and cash, or the guys who hung out with you when you were a nobody? Jeez that is tough. And what prepares these kids for becoming instant millionaires? The league has a program put together by old white guys, I'm certain that's relevant. Clearly they need to be held responsible a lot earlier in their lives, but that is not the whole answer.
  25. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 10:16 AM) Ah, I didn't realize you were talking about a corporate HR versus a branch hiring. That changes things. Call or email is the best method, but definately contact them to keep on their list. ^^ How did you initially get in contact with them? I'd probably use that same method.
