Do I go?
SRO with most of the crowd students. When he walked on stage it was a really cool moment. Bigger than life, but human as well. I'll admit to a certain excitement, but not nearly as cool as Konerko's WS grand slam. Some housekeeping to get out of the way. Technically, it sucked. As he talked, so did the translator. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. Five or six words from Gorbachev, then the translator talked over him. Very distracting, I was constantly wondering if the translation matched his remarks. Subtitles on the screen would have been much preferred. His prepared remarks hinged on four themes. Globalization, especially how it affects the developing world. He said forgiving developing nation's debts has already been done, but teaching them to farm and buying them a tractor is better. The environment and how the US and Russia should be taking the lead. He criticized, gently, the US for not being a better example. Terrorism and the Middle East. Do not blame Islam, instead realize that terrorists target the poor and the oppressed with their rhetoric of hate. They find a desperate population willing to list and believe. They go to the very poor areas to recruit. The fourth was how Russians view the west in regards to the west viewing Russia. They are puzzled and hurt that the west would cheer when their economy was collapsing and their people were starving. Now that Russia is rebuilding and doing better, the west is disappointed. This has fueled anti-west sentiment within Russia. He proposed that the world benefits from strong countries. Since the US is the only Super Power, they have a responsibility to take care of everything, where in the past the USSR provided some help as well. He concluded his prepared remarks by quoting a great American with words he said he believes in. Y'all can search who said this on June 10th 1963. The Q&A was very interesting and showed his wit and humor. Asked about the upcoming election he said there are many candidates and it is for you to choose, not himself. (was funny in the moment). Another questioner mentioned that many people here in the US give Reagan most or all the credit for bringing down the Soviet Union. His answer was let them talk. (big laugh from the crowd). He had praise for the Cuban people, their education and health systems and believes trade will benefit everyone. The border wall was mentioned and he was asked to compare it to the Berlin Wall (almost no one down here is in favor) he replied he would not use the words that Reagan said (laughs) but that history has shown that these walls are bad and even though the US is very wealthy, no country has all the money and why spend it on this? (big applause). He feels the US could learn a lot by his countries problems in Afghanistan and their eventual exit. The final question, actually more of a final comment, was delivered by a young lady and was perhaps the most fitting comment. In Russian she spoke rather nervously to Gorbachev. It was plain her comments struck a kind nerve with the former President. He replied in Russian. She then turned to the crowd, and was rather choked up when she explained that she thanked the President because his policies allowed her to leave Russia and come to the United States where she can teach Russian history, language, and customs to the students at UT-Pan American. Upcoming speakers in this free series include John F. Kennedy Jr. and in February the one I am most excited about, Paul Rusesabagina. I can not imagine being in the same room with him.

QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 04:11 PM) Not my point. My point was that if you want to say that blacks or other minorities may have a tougher road to "success" in American then I'd agree. But I would disagree if you were saying there are still barriers stopping them from whatever they want to do. I guess I'm saying since there is a tougher road to success for minorities than whites, there must be some barriers in the way, why else would it be tougher? But we would then be parsing words, and why bother?

Do I go?
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 04:15 PM) Dude, he was at the University of Dallas last night and I wanted to go so bad. I just couldn't get there with my schedule right now. Please go and tell us how it was. Seriously. I'm going. I keep thinking if this was a band, Tuesday night, no cover, they must totally suck. I keep thinking he's less than a mile from my house, no cost, and I'm sitting here like a winter Texan, it's going to be crowded . . .

Catch-All Anything Thread
QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 03:52 PM) Ebay is so lame... I sold a bunch of junk, literally. And now I have someone giving me negative feedback because I clearly stated that I had no idea if the item worked. He complained there weren't batteries, which I never said there were nor did he ask. People expect EVERYTHING on ebay to be in amazing shape and to be a steal. An auction/digital yardsale is never a guarantee, unless you ask questions and then you avoid the bad deals anyway. am I a bad person for selling things that I didn't want and didn't know if it worked? one man's junk is another man's treasure, right? what a jagoff. I have had hundreds of positive transactions on ebay, and one bad one. It's up to you but I would offer a refund, less shipping and fees.

QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 03:13 PM) I have a beard. I bet 17% fails in comparison to the amount of jobs I wouldn't be considered for simply because I have facial hair. Is that discrimination? I write on my resume that I'm a Sox fan. I bet I'd be denied by a ton of employers for that. Is that discrimination? b****, if you seriously are comparing the struggles that blacks have had in this country versus a beard or being a Sox fan, then I rest my case. You have no clue the struggles and that is my best argument. People died for civil rights.

QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 02:55 PM) Tex, back in the 80's, I had tried to apply for a job at UIC that I saw in the paper every sunday. I send resume after resume, changing colors of the paper, different cover letters, etc. No luck on getting a call for an interview. until I changed the name at top to Tyrone Jackson. They weren't happy at my appearance or something when i got there, as my interview lasted all of about 30 seconds. but it was worth it. I am certain that happens also. But I doubt it balances.

QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 02:41 PM) We should add that to title vii - name discrimination. 17% is not a barrier. LMAO. OK, I see where this is going. Enjoy your fantasy.

QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 02:25 PM) Give me one example of a barrier that a minority has to overcome that a white person wouldn't have to deal with. Just one. And again, having to work harder than the average joe is not a barrier. The 65 year old executive that marched against civil rights as a youth in the 60s. The 40 something small business owner that thinks it's wrong that Mexicans are taking over America.

QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 02:14 PM) So long as you mean some people might have to work harder, then I'd agree. But if you're saying there are still barriers to success then I have to wholeheartedly disagree. Minorities in this country are given every opportunity and advantage possible. Discrimination is no longer a factor in 99.9% of cases. Wait until you get in the real world.

US Olympic Committee Chairman says Chicago falling behind
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 08:44 AM) Wow, everything in the US media has sounded like just the opposite. It seems like everyone is chasing Rio. A part of me has started to wonder if this story was just a plant for Daley to shake some more money out of corporate donors... Great call.

QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 01:52 PM) OK, so they almost killed the white kid as payback for past racial injustices done to their ancestors? Why didn't they just say so? They should just get a slap on the wrist then. My willingness or lack thereof to become black or latino has no bearing whatsoever on the fact that these kids beat up someone. Not my message. But you knew that. Next time use green and don't quote me.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 01:37 PM) It just amazes me what some people will defend to allow the government to take over everything people don't want to handle themselves. You mean like national defense, education, public health, eliminating polio, law enforcement, inspecting food processors, checking medicines, cleaning up polluted rivers, student financial aid, highways, air traffic control, prisons, courts, etc. etc.

I asked what sources they had because I didn't read the article. I trust that you can offer a good synopsis of the article. If you wanted us to read it, why explain it?
