  1. Those types of solutions have been used before. Actually living up there for an extended amount of time sounds like fun, and I imagine at least one other soxtalker would agree. A similar trip is on my retirement and life list.
  2. QUOTE(spiderman @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 07:44 PM) This isn't news either. Check out a poll A large majority of people are against the war. Why should the army be any different ? Because we have rarely, if ever, had active duty soldiers speaking out. Recently enacted whistleblower protections are beiing used by those soldiers. FWIW, this is not why that law was enacted, and I am uncomfortable with our military members speaking out in public. I do agree with Nuke, when you enlist, you give up a number of rights.
  3. QUOTE(Reddy @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 07:12 PM) is this really coming up again? who cares? At some point being a Sox fan means often times be the #2 team in your market. Only a few other fan bases can commiserate with that. Mets, Clippers, (A's or Giants), Angels maybe. NFL Jets.
  4. Couple things, while the Sox where on a channel 44 and we had to watch through the snow, the Cubs were building an empire on their Superstation. For most of the country without a true local team, the only baseball broadcast they could watch were Cubs during the day and the Braves at night. There was at least a decade of that. Wrigley is one of the classic venues in a sport that loves tradition. While the Yankees had the house that Ruth built, the Cubs had the house that losing built. As a baseball fan without a Sox-Cubs care, Wrigley is a better building for a once a year visit and souvenir. Around the country the NL and the Cubs seem to be more popular. But then they earned that with nationwide marketing all those years ago.

    Always funny

I assume these were part of a "sting". Seriously, looking over these guys, I doubt any of them were going to get any for free
  6. http://www.theyrule.net/ Take any two companies and see how they are connected.
  7. QUOTE(Allsox @ Feb 19, 2007 -> 10:32 AM) The Cubs would offer 7 yrs, 140 mil though I was always my intent to stay in Chicago, I love the citry and the great fans . . .

http://www.chicagopolice.org/ps/list.aspx# A couple favorites, the guy from Indy, Bridgeview, and the old man.
  9. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 01:47 AM) I don't think so. They're more careful than that. Iirc, it involves survey data where people self-identify as conservative or liberal. It happens that conservatism and religious-ness are correlated, which probably leads to the quote. This comes from a non-believer, so don't infer any value judgements. I have to stop checking off conservative whenever anyone in Texas asks me.
  10. QUOTE(Reddy @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 12:29 AM) you really think the percentage is that high? there was a similar story like this recently where a woman couldnt figure out how to get rid of pornographic pop ups and now she faces jail time - does she really deserve that?? if there really was a woman getting raped this guy would've been a hero but since it was just porn now it's considered assault? thats effed... although we'll see how it all turns out. i agree with Pratt though, juries are surprisingly stupid sometimes The ones they get wrong make the news. How many calls are there to the police, and how many situations like this come to mind? Last month just in Chicago there were over 11,000 reported crimes. If you take the 80% suggestion, this would mean that over 2,000 people would fall into the "pop up" and "smashing down the door" type. I don't think so. Using my number one or two would have fallen into that category. And looking at the two situations, in the one she didn't need to figure out how to stop the pop ups, she needed to figure out how to cover the monitor with a coat or call for help. I am certain the jury thought about that. In this one, if someone knocks down your door in the middle of the night, threatening you with a sword, and you did nothing, wouldn't you want the authorities to investigate?
  11. QUOTE(spiderman @ Feb 24, 2007 -> 11:31 PM) Why is this a story ? Did anyone really think that all US Soldiers believe in the mission, especially the longer we are there ? Of course not. I hope that 60 minutes will have a story next week about 1,000 soldiers there who believe in the mission. I'll probably be waiting a long time for that story though. News is when things go wrong. A twelve car pile up on the Edens is more newsworthy than the hundred thousand cars that arrived successfully. Tonight on the CBS News, this man drove home without incident!
  12. QUOTE(Reddy @ Feb 24, 2007 -> 09:47 PM) i hate that people trying to do good (if not a little odd) things in this country can end up in trouble... all because of our stupid court system It is up to the courts to decide if he broke down the door and threatened the guy with a sword because he really thought someone was being raped, or he broke down the door, etc. because the TV was too loud or he was deranged. In 99.99% of the cases our system gets it right. The fact that both the porn watcher and the would be hero both are protected in this society by a fair and inpartial court system is a wonderful thing.
  13. It seems like they are equating religious with conservative. In that description, all my hours would be counted in the conservative group because I am also religious.
  14. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Feb 24, 2007 -> 04:17 PM) Why go to thru the production hassles when you have ready-made product. Because you can tailor it towards your exact message, much like Republicans want to hear from our media.
  15. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 23, 2007 -> 11:36 PM) No matter how much I hate Mr. Bonds, I'd have to sell it. I just can't screw my life over that much when handed that kind of gift. And pay your medical bills for the pummeling you will have endured to keep the ball. It will be insane. I fear someone will get trampled. The bleachers will not be a place for kids. It will look like a soccer crowd. I think it is sad, with the overwhelming preponderance of evidence he used performance enhancing drugs to break the record, that people will still cheer for him. It shows all that is wrong in our society and I hope, at the least, that those that cheer him do not adopt that same cheating attitude in life.
  16. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Feb 24, 2007 -> 02:18 PM) If you survey people and their 'giving' habits, would you think that democrats or republicans give more to charity? And I mean of their own money, not by appropriating taxes to fund thier pet causes. Most surveys I've seen show the poor as the most generous. Dems and GOP the breakdown usually shows a slight difference with the GOPs giving more money and the Dems giving more time and talents. As far as giving, as working for a non profit, it takes time, talent, and treasure to make most non profits work. It is usually easier to find treasure than time and talent.
  17. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Feb 24, 2007 -> 02:16 PM) Tex, in sports, when you can see that the other guy is tired, or losing confidence, you can always find that little bit extra to try and finish him off. why not the same in war? The terrorists are in a waiting game, and the more that they see the good guys don't want to fight, the more they can convince themselves that if they just hold on a little bit longer, the burger-eating surrender monkeys will leave. Because war is different in sports. When you spoke of finishing them off did you think about killing or being killed or did you think about winning a game? If he's staring across the line, is he thinking about the other team's fans or the guys he's playing against? Going into battle and thinking you may die is probably a bigger motivator than thinking that someone in Iowa, not even the person trying to kill you, is unhappy. Put another way and bringing it home, which is more important to the guy across the battlefield from Nuke, Nuke's motivation or mine? If that guy really thinks he's going to win because I would rather Nuke be back home b****ing about liberals, he's half way to overconfidence and a dirt nap. Also, if it is that big of a motivator, wouldn't the other side just produce some propaganda films to motivate their Troops? They don't need actual CNN coverage.
  18. I've heard Frank is quiet in the locker room. Not much of a vocal leader, but a nice team mate. He also has probably mellowed some.
  19. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Feb 24, 2007 -> 11:38 AM) So apparently Carwell's BA Level was .00. Um, Brian, why in the blue hell weren't you driving then? Tall, sober and stupid is no way to go through life, son
  20. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 24, 2007 -> 09:32 AM) I'll take... C. Make it work where it CAN work. Pull everyone back into Kurdistan, let them set up their independent country like they want to. They are capable of it, they actually like having us there, it would solve the refugee problem in Turkey and Iran by giving them a place to come back to, its a smaller area to be concerned with, there is oil to provide income, we'd be close to the borders with Iran and Syria which can be better secured... its really the best possible solution at this point (its not PERFECT by any means, and there will be issues, but its a world better than the current scenario). Unfortunately, everyone wants to make this thing all or nothing. If we pull everyone back isn't that leaving? Call it what you will, are their troops there? We stayed. If the troops are gone we left.
  21. QUOTE(NUKE @ Feb 24, 2007 -> 12:58 PM) That's the problem though. As a soldier you do not have the right to publicly criticize the government's war policies. That's one thing you forfeit when you sign on that dotted line. I do see a difference in whistleblowing and policy differences. I agree that there the military could forbid public criticism from their employees. I can't believe it makes the enemy fight harder knowing some people are against the war. I think dying might be more of an incentive.
  22. Image wise the NBA basically has been trash for most of it's history. From the fighting days, through the heavy drug days, to today. There have been years when they have been better, but over all it has the worse imagine of any major league. The NFL on the other hand, has an almost Teflon™ image. Still not perfect, but better than most.
  23. QUOTE(mreye @ Feb 24, 2007 -> 08:06 AM) You know that's not what I'm saying, Tex. Many POWs from Vietnam said the vast coverage of discontent here only emboldened the enemy. That's the road we're heading down again. I don't know the answer. I just think cuttin and running at this time is not ideal. WMD? Gone Regime Change? Done Cutting and running? Mission Accomplished, Go Home!
  24. Obviously we have defines poverty too strictly. We need to lower the poverty threshhold to around $2,000 and then we won't have all these poor people.
