  1. It took decades to create this problem and I believe, if a solution is found, it will take generations to fix. In the meantime, a couple steps in the right direction. President Bush pushing for getting faith based groups into the mix. As noted in another thread, people who believe in a higher power, are generally more generous with their time, talents, and treasure. Eliciting private solutions, secular and non secular, will be key. We need to change the way we fund public schools in the US. The poorest areas, the ones who need a quality education the most, received the lowest funding. The schools with the highest income areas, received the most funding. Fair from a you get what you can afford pov, but not good from an overall societal pov. We need to reward those that do things right. If you have school age kids, reward them for attendance, High School diplomas, college work, etc.
  2. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 05:55 AM) There is always work no one else wants to do, or there isn't money to pay for. Cutting trails in a city park for example, or self-sustaining activities in the prison like others have said. http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/45b/156.html I'm not saying it's a bad idea, just pointing out someone will lose. Cutting trails? City employee plus a families enjoyment of the park when they come up on a group of prisoners and their guards. Some people are nervous about that. Farming and ranching could wind up costing more than buying from current suppliers. Land costs, seeds, fertilizers, equipment to pick and process, etc. Trying to secure hundreds of acres of land. The American farmer is already stressed financially. When I read the stories of honest, law abiding citizens, losing jobs to criminals, it just doesn't seem right to me.
  3. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 05:45 AM) Test. Noticing it is always at the top?
  4. Google Prison labor and you'll see the hot bed of controversy. It's a tough decision, with sound reasons on both sides. I really dislike seeing companies with law abiding citizens, even farmers and carpenters, losing jobs so guys whose only qualification is they raped a college student can take that job. And it hasn't been buying from China, it's been building roads, demolition work at the prison, etc.
  5. NSS, here is the balancing act. When the prisoners are put to work, they are now competing with workers that did not commit a crime. The government stops buying from Company A in Tallahassee and starts buying from Pontiac Prison. Here is one such example There are always unintended consequences.
  6. But, Where's He Going To Play?
  7. I love it when fans point to more fouls assessed towards their team, penalty yards, etc. and call it referee's being unfair. Couldn't be their team committed more infractions?
  8. If Dollar Bill Worst doesn't have the worst record of any major sport owner, I'd like to know who is worse? Add in Pulford and you easily have the worst duo in sports history.
  9. YANY, perhaps on some fronts, but we also Placed a man on the moon Invented the transistor, which revolutionized electronics and the world. Seriously cleaned up the environment Eradicated small pox and polio Become THE economic power house in the world's economy. Gave the world McDonald's and bought the world a Coke Made the world a little less safe for dictators, oppressors, and evil doers. Assured Jews a homeland And that's just to get started.
  10. I remember a dozen years ago or more when UNLV had a bunch of studs and everyone was making these jackass statements like the entire starting five could be selected in the first round, they could beat NBA teams, etc. Hell every NBA player was All-everything in high school and college. IIRC they got bounced the second round of the NCAA Tourny. I can't remember when the Hawks haven't sucked. Well yes, Keenan's last season. He was a psycho, pulling goalies like it was a line change. I watched and cried as the Penguins skated on Stadium ice with Lord Stanley's Cup. There hasn't been much to cheer since then.
  11. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Agreed. Plus, I thought we were an advanced society. The money we spend on marijuana arrests, trials, and prison time is by far the biggest waste of money ever. I've never smoked, but to me it isn't any worse than alcohol, it's the distribution chain that makes it a bigger problem. Sell them in bars and liquor stores and turn it into a revenue stream instead of a revenue drain.
  12. QUOTE(knightni @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 08:32 PM) I'd say A's. SF is considered trendy, Oak is considered ghetto. That's what I was guessing but being an "AL Guy" the A's seemed cool to me. Maybe because of the days of Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers, Vida "True" Blue, etc.
  13. Those types of solutions have been used before. Actually living up there for an extended amount of time sounds like fun, and I imagine at least one other soxtalker would agree. A similar trip is on my retirement and life list.
  14. QUOTE(spiderman @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 07:44 PM) This isn't news either. Check out a poll A large majority of people are against the war. Why should the army be any different ? Because we have rarely, if ever, had active duty soldiers speaking out. Recently enacted whistleblower protections are beiing used by those soldiers. FWIW, this is not why that law was enacted, and I am uncomfortable with our military members speaking out in public. I do agree with Nuke, when you enlist, you give up a number of rights.
  15. QUOTE(Reddy @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 07:12 PM) is this really coming up again? who cares? At some point being a Sox fan means often times be the #2 team in your market. Only a few other fan bases can commiserate with that. Mets, Clippers, (A's or Giants), Angels maybe. NFL Jets.
  16. Couple things, while the Sox where on a channel 44 and we had to watch through the snow, the Cubs were building an empire on their Superstation. For most of the country without a true local team, the only baseball broadcast they could watch were Cubs during the day and the Braves at night. There was at least a decade of that. Wrigley is one of the classic venues in a sport that loves tradition. While the Yankees had the house that Ruth built, the Cubs had the house that losing built. As a baseball fan without a Sox-Cubs care, Wrigley is a better building for a once a year visit and souvenir. Around the country the NL and the Cubs seem to be more popular. But then they earned that with nationwide marketing all those years ago.

I assume these were part of a "sting". Seriously, looking over these guys, I doubt any of them were going to get any for free

  19. QUOTE(Allsox @ Feb 19, 2007 -> 10:32 AM) The Cubs would offer 7 yrs, 140 mil though I was always my intent to stay in Chicago, I love the citry and the great fans . . .

  21. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 01:47 AM) I don't think so. They're more careful than that. Iirc, it involves survey data where people self-identify as conservative or liberal. It happens that conservatism and religious-ness are correlated, which probably leads to the quote. This comes from a non-believer, so don't infer any value judgements. I have to stop checking off conservative whenever anyone in Texas asks me.
  22. QUOTE(Reddy @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 12:29 AM) you really think the percentage is that high? there was a similar story like this recently where a woman couldnt figure out how to get rid of pornographic pop ups and now she faces jail time - does she really deserve that?? if there really was a woman getting raped this guy would've been a hero but since it was just porn now it's considered assault? thats effed... although we'll see how it all turns out. i agree with Pratt though, juries are surprisingly stupid sometimes The ones they get wrong make the news. How many calls are there to the police, and how many situations like this come to mind? Last month just in Chicago there were over 11,000 reported crimes. If you take the 80% suggestion, this would mean that over 2,000 people would fall into the "pop up" and "smashing down the door" type. I don't think so. Using my number one or two would have fallen into that category. And looking at the two situations, in the one she didn't need to figure out how to stop the pop ups, she needed to figure out how to cover the monitor with a coat or call for help. I am certain the jury thought about that. In this one, if someone knocks down your door in the middle of the night, threatening you with a sword, and you did nothing, wouldn't you want the authorities to investigate?
  23. QUOTE(spiderman @ Feb 24, 2007 -> 11:31 PM) Why is this a story ? Did anyone really think that all US Soldiers believe in the mission, especially the longer we are there ? Of course not. I hope that 60 minutes will have a story next week about 1,000 soldiers there who believe in the mission. I'll probably be waiting a long time for that story though. News is when things go wrong. A twelve car pile up on the Edens is more newsworthy than the hundred thousand cars that arrived successfully. Tonight on the CBS News, this man drove home without incident!
  24. QUOTE(Reddy @ Feb 24, 2007 -> 09:47 PM) i hate that people trying to do good (if not a little odd) things in this country can end up in trouble... all because of our stupid court system It is up to the courts to decide if he broke down the door and threatened the guy with a sword because he really thought someone was being raped, or he broke down the door, etc. because the TV was too loud or he was deranged. In 99.99% of the cases our system gets it right. The fact that both the porn watcher and the would be hero both are protected in this society by a fair and inpartial court system is a wonderful thing.
  25. It seems like they are equating religious with conservative. In that description, all my hours would be counted in the conservative group because I am also religious.
