Geocaching
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 22, 2006 -> 09:43 AM) I like the idea of the GEO part. Sending someone to a great spot to see something cool is great. Put I am not a fan of the CACHING aspect. Too much like littering to me. Well, there are always virtual caches which bring people to an interesting spot. The only trace is the internet logs. For some locations, that is much more appropriate. In doing some research I am finding dozens near my home. I finally broke down and bought a GPS and will be spending the afternoon learning. I will not use it for most wilderness navigating, I prefer to use and teach map and compass navigation. Once someone has mastered that, perhaps relying in batteries and electronics may make sense.

Rape or not Rape.....
Todays politics of sex Know your partner Receive clear permission Be certain a new partner, or probably any partner, is sober enough to offer consent Don't have sex with a psycho who may later turn on you. No matter what, don't leave DNA unless you are trying to reproduce It isn't a bad thing.

I know that SC and BBTN repeats, I'm trying to see which are repeats and which are new and could we start a thread when the Sox highlights are? A few times I've watched almost the entire SC and missed the Sox, only to miss it during the repeat. I am such a whiny b****

The Continuing Rise of Mark Buerhle
I also think Mark. at least from what I can see, can smile and keep a positive outlook on life. That will help keep him healthy and wanting to play. Some guys seem tormented by playing a game for a living, mark still seems to be playing, even without the tarp slides.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Apr 22, 2006 -> 08:51 AM) City. Sprite or Mountain Dew Mountain Dew, Sprite reminds me of 7up which reminds me of being sick as a kid, it cured everything sarcasm or physical humor?

QUOTE(Soxy @ Apr 22, 2006 -> 08:39 AM) Hmmm, I love them both. But I'm a pet girl, so I'm going to go with Get Fuzzy. Big dogs or little dogs? Big dogs, if they can't drink out of a toilet, they are tooo small. Wilderness survival or city survival?

The Continuing Rise of Mark Buerhle
And doesn't that open some eyes. even a conservative projection is a great career. It is also easy to argue that 300 is well within reason, if healthy and playing for good to above average teams.

The Continuing Rise of Mark Buerhle
^^^^^^^^^^^^ that was the genesis of this thread. I see Mark in the Maddux mold in some ways. His health seems to indicate he could achieve Moyer like years and be a threat to win 300, but he'd have to continue to play on some great teams. More likely 15 @ 15 wins and 225 wins. It is strange that the media hasn't picked up on his marketability sooner. That solid midwestern charm should start resulting in some endorsement $$$$.

Rape or not Rape.....
He initiated the sex, he will be help more accountable than she will. That's the key to this case. If it can be proven, and I don't know how, that she reasonable could not know (drunk, dark), then perhaps he'll even be found guilty. As presented in the article, in the US, I think it would be diffucult to get a conviction. He had a willing partner in a different room, why would he rape her roommate? Now if the willing partner looked like William Shatner in drag and the roommate looked like , he may also have to deal with that. (although I know it shouldn't matter). Bottom line, he initiated the encounter and will, and should, be held to a higher standard. It's the only way our laws would work.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 22, 2006 -> 02:22 AM) What it shows is that the conservatives finally are getting a voice after decades of liberally slanted news being the only option. Which proves my point. Conservatives think there should be a voice. Please tell me news that makes us look good and I'll be happy. When everyone gets that, we stop holding out leaders accountable and a larger rift developes. The news should seem biased to everyone unless your politican views are exactly middle. Plus you can't write every story on a total nuetral tone. If the President screws up, he screws up. Deal with it, don't cry "it's the media". But that's what the Republican Party has their followers believeing. As soon as the Dems get that same feeling, and it's coming fast, because what works for one party will work for the other, then we have people just reading news that exactly matches their opinion, right or wrong. The GOP has unleashed the greatest campaign strategy ever devised. They have insulated themselves from any criticism. The news is either favorable to the GOP or Liberally Biased!!!. Keep drinking the koolaid and we're screwed. The Soviet Union had TAAS and the GOP wants that same set up. No criticism of their government, only news that makes them sound great. And talk about voice, talk radio is 24/7 Conservative. The mass media owners, the same people who own the news outlets, aren't programming any liberal talk. Why would they forms some secret society to slant the 15 minute newscast for their benefit, then turn over the remaining 23 hours + to Rush and his cronies?

The Continuing Rise of Mark Buerhle
I don't usually get into hyperbole mode about someone's career. But IMNSHO, Buerhle will end his career with over 250 wins, a couple Cy Young Awards, and most people will consider him the best Sox pitcher of all time. Yet, from year to year, his unassuming manner, will have some people wondering if he's an "Ace" or even the top pitcher on the staff. I've always liked his mechanics, his approach, and most everything about the way he goes about his work. He's becoming Ryan, Clemens, Shilling, Pedro, without the PR. This will be the season the rest of the country turns their heads and watches as Mark pushes a couple guys aside and takes his place in that upper patheon. Last night's game should not have surprised anyone. Both pitchers were up for the game and on top of their games. What a difference a couple years make. It's a game that we would have lost in 2003.

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
Buerhle was masterful. That was one of the best duels I've watched in a long time, for about 2/3 rds of a game.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Apr 21, 2006 -> 11:10 AM) Heck, 20 points per quarter. I still think it's a neat story. I'm not embarrassed to say it brought tears to my eyes. The coach should be fired for not playing him sooner . . .

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Apr 21, 2006 -> 11:08 AM) ok, so why doesn't the "new media" consist of more "left-leaning" biased programs? Why are they not as successful? I am saying we are in danger when everyone just gets slanted news that will make them happy. Isn't that a government's dream? I don't careif it's slanted left, right, up, down, or sideways. What it shows is conservatives want biased news more than liberals. But that will change soon, and liberals will also be able to receive biased news to make them happy. The division in this country will get deeper when both sides think they have the exclusive hold on truth, fairness, and how to run this country. They will believe it without question because that is all they hear, their side's postive moments and the other sides mistakes. If they should happen to hear the opposite, it will because of that media's bias.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Apr 21, 2006 -> 09:39 AM) I've seen some creative attempts, like the guy who 'helps you' flag down a cab, or opens a door for you. My car broke down once and I was looking under the hood when the neighborhood drunk came up to me and gave me his 'former mechanic professional advice', then asked for a few bucks. The guys who are making s*** up, and you know and more importantly *they* know it are fun. The guys who are talking s*** because they don't know where they are, scare me. Give me the drunk who makes up stuff, has no earthly clue, and I'll give him a couple bucks and remember why I miss YAS* when he doesn't post for a couple days. *I kid because I care

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Apr 21, 2006 -> 10:48 AM) But see, if more (and more) people didn't agree with these "new media" people, they wouldn't be as popular as they are. And there in lies the danger. Is it better for our societies well being for being to receive boutique news that is tailered to get them to buy it, i.e. news slanted to fit their views, or for journalists to strive to deliver the truth, no matter who it offends or attracts? I believe you and I should be watching the same newscast and pointing to stories that appear biased. You will see storied that you think are too liberal and I will see storied that appear too conservative. But in reality the newscast would be "fair and balanced". What we are moving towards is "News You Agree With". I'll play up the stuff you like and slant the stuff you don't like and you will watch, our ratings will go up, and we'll keep saying it's because we are publishing the truth.

Forbes Franchise Valuations
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 21, 2006 -> 05:59 AM) And they don't make a penny of their money off of the White Sox. I agree it is a good thing, but let's put this in perspective. I also don't make a penny off of any of my stocks, nor do I make a penny off of my house, but they have increased in value. You can be making money without taking any income. So I wouldn't hold a beg-a-thon for them. By reinvesting in their business, the business has grown in value. Who knows how they have used that equity. What this does show, is they are being as fair to the fans as anyone can expect them to be. Not only are they reinvesting any profits, they have avoided huge payroll mistakes.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Apr 21, 2006 -> 09:41 AM) What I think is interesting is how successful all the "new media" outlets are compared to the "main stream" outlets. I wonder why the popularity is higher for the "new media"? /ducks That's easy, First convince an audience that each audience member is independent and neither liberal or conservative. Give them what they want. Makes them happy when they hear the news that they agree with. Have the commentators make fun of anyone that doesn't think like them, gives them a smug, elitist cocoon to sleep in. Convince them if they don't like something, it is the reporters fault. Create a bunker, us vs. them mentality. It really is a great system. We are not biased, because you are not biased, and you agree with us. So if you read, see, or hear something yuou don't agree with, it is because of a bias.

Catch-All Anything Thread
QUOTE(The Critic @ Apr 21, 2006 -> 09:28 AM) Depends on the situation. I work overnights on Sundays, so if I get approached on the way back to the car at 2 or 3am, I generally give something. During the day, not usually. One time I was wearing a Reds batting practice jersey and this guy walks up to me ( seemed to be enjoying some "adult beverages" along the way ) and says "YES!!! THE BIG RED MACHINE!!! OHhhh, man, I remember THAT team, boy!!! There was Joe Bench.....and Charlie Hustle.....and Johnny Perez......and MORGAN. Man, those boys could PLAY SOME BALL!!!" So I'm just smiling and chatting a little, trying to ease my way outta there, when he pulls a beat-up Streetwise out of his jacket and says "Can one Reds fan help another one out?" He got me, I expected a "request" for some cash, but not the Streetwise! I gave him two bucks - one for the paper and one for the act! I like guys like that, putting a little effort out there. I like a good emergency, stuck on the road, whatever story. I'll suprise some of the tellers, if I can bust their story, I'll still give them some coinage.
