  1. I heard on ESPN radio today the Sox called the best team in baseball. No big deal really. Saying the same thing over and over again would be repetitious.
  2. Interesting that his career was basically over, he finds this to get a little camera time, and all of a sudden his career is relevant again.
  3. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 04:23 PM) Freddy is making his case to be an All-Star... 8-3 with a 3.29 ERA Another good outing before the break and he's in. Possibly he deserves it, but I don't see three starters from the Sox on the team.
  4. Great to see the big man playing a little in Dallas. Today he lined an RBI double and made a big play at the plate. Sandy was one of my favorite Sox players the past couple seasons and it was good to see him playing a little.
  5. Y'all are way too young. Us old guys will remember this Kenny Rogers classic and soooo fitting.
  6. QUOTE(Middle Buffalo @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 12:19 PM) Great story. I hope one of them was wearing my old gym shirt. IMHO people are basically good and big hearted.
  7. I don't think HoF and retired numbers go hand in hand. Seaver toiled on the south side for a couple seasons, but wasn't a "White Sox". A retired number should be more than just playing well, it should reflect someone who is clearly a Sox guy. In that respect, if Fisk had spent less time in Chicago, I could see not retiring his number. To this day, most baseball fans think of him as a Red Sox. Frank, should have his number retired immediately after playing his last game. Let's not have a repeat of Baines where his number was retired before he finished playing and even came back for a cup of coffee with the Sox.
  8. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 03:01 PM) You're still measuring sales, dollars, and the like. There has to be a way to show other improvements, other QUANTIFIABLE improvements, to effective leadership. Edit: Wait, that was my question, wasn't it? I've slept since then, only a little though. PROFITS... PROFIT MEASUREMENT is what I'm after - directly attributable to leadership style. Each department will be judged by a different standard. Not every department is or should be judged by profit. There are some departments that will never show a profit. The other yardsticks that start to come into play would be turn over, absenteeism, etc. It is difficult to measure employee satisfaction.
  9. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 12:19 PM) The problem is, and will be, until someone comes up with a different measurement system, you don't have a tangible effect on your company's results by different leadership styles. Leadership styles DO have an impact, but the measureables are not in place to say HOW MUCH of an impact. /need to become an Organizational Behavior geek to invent kapkomet's measurables of leadership styles A sales department can measure sales volume or profit. A manufacturing can measure output, scrap, etc. The measurements are there, you just need a before and after and the knowledge to sort through other factors.

A known commodity that is working is far better than the unknown. I'd give her the little extra and say establish the ground rules so this doesn't happen again. I had a similar situation with my housekeeper, who interestingly enough also was making $10 per day. Plus room and board.
  11. QUOTE(farmteam @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 02:38 PM) I just realized something--I have never gone a day at Soxtalk without seeing a post from SS2k5. Never on vacation, I swear! Anyways, this made me realize something; a day at Soxtalk without SS2k5 is like an ice cream cone without the ice cream. And no, I'm not comparing him to a giant sticky ball of heart attack-at-39. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming. I just went cold turkey for three days (well almost, I did talk to Kap on the phone). Sunday night ---> Loss to Cubs. Figured I was missing the suicide watch. No big deal. Monday ---> Off day. No big deal, thinking about SL&P Tuesday ---> What a game. Cannot post or lurk Wednesday ---> getting off plane. Text Message Re: Thomas home run. Dying to be here.
  12. I know I'm in the minority but every time I see Colon's name, I think damn, I wish he was still here. Buerhle is on track to be on everyone's Sox Career All-Time Rotation, if not #1. I am not including guys like Seaver who stopped in for a cup of coffee at the end of their career or guys who had a couple outstanding seasons.
  13. I do not believe the method of evaluation should change regardless of the methods used by the manager. If I am understanding the question, you are trying to place a tangible score ($$) on an intangible (style of leadership) Step one is always find objective evidence. Without a yardstick that can be touched, measured, etc. you are chasing sprites. Find something that can be measured. This will change by the company and the department. For some it may be increases in widgets coming off the line with a increase in quality. For other companies it may be accuracy, it may be increased sales, etc. Make certain that what you are measuring is important to he department or company. The corresponding increases or decreases will give you a gage on the effectiveness with that manager and how well that manager implements a management style. Again, in studying human behavior in this manner, the only conclusion that you could draw would be about that that manager. Perhaps after many managers have been measured, you can broaden the scope and perhaps make some judgments.
  14. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Jun 26, 2005 -> 04:50 PM) I just called a friend, who had her cell off. So, I leave my message, but for some reason included, okay, love you bye. There's a two second pause where I realize what I've said, and then I ramble on for about 10 seconds, saying, "Um, I'm not sure what I said that. Sorry, that's totally not how I usually close my conversations. I mean, you're great and one of my best friends, but, uh um, yeah. Okay, well, I uh gotta go. Sorry. Have a good day." Agh. I need to get more sleep. (on the plus side I ordered two new studs for my nose! woot) your Fruedian slip is showing
  15. QUOTE(soxhawks @ Jun 26, 2005 -> 01:09 PM) frank still has gas left in the tank i see no reason to dump him Let's hope Rein$dorf agrees with you.
  16. What we really need is Fisk to say he placed a curse on the Sox and will only lift it if JR calls. Then the national media will have a story and we can finally get some air-time
  17. A buddy was telling me his worse sports moment. His HS team had just won their conference championship, and everyone was feeling pretty good. As guys were lining up to get in the showers, one guy looked at him and said "why the hell are you getting in the shower, you didn't play!" Then a few other guys said "yeah, you haven't played in 2 weeks, you're always in the showers, whats up with that?" Humiliated he decided to walk home from the away game. Problem is, he had no clue how to get home. So he basically "ran away". No money, cold, tired, (a guess a litte sweaty from warmups) and pissed. After walking for an hour he saw the school bus slowly coming down the road. So he hid and watched it go by. Seems the whole team was out looking for him and getting madder by the minute. So now he's afraid to even get on the bus, afraid of the ass kicking at school coming up, afraid of all the jokes that were going to be said. So he just sat there and cried. Long story short, he found a pay phone, called home, and got a ride home. Problem is the school never called his house and he never called the school. The bus driver finally took the team home and the coaches and the police went back and started looking. The cops had enough sense to call home and found out where he was. He was kicked off all school activities for the rest of the year. His girlfriend broke up with him because her parents thought he was a mental case. I cannot believe anyone could have a worse sports moment. I also cannot think of anyone dumb enough to tell me so I could post it on the internet for all of Dan Thompson's friends and relations to see.
  18. Timo slapping Paulie's ass after a home run. Timo getting the phone for Ozz Timo just changing his uniform after a game, no need to shower.
  19. QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 25, 2005 -> 09:35 PM) From the sounds of things.. it's the kids fault because he's too stupid to get out of the road. Open season on stupid kids
  20. One of my all-time favorite players friom any team. I just wish there was a White Sox moment as dramatic as the "wave the ball fair" for the networks to use.
  21. From the Sick Poll Thread QUOTE(Antonio Osuna @ Jun 26, 2005 -> 12:03 AM) I would dump any girl who didn't cheat on me if it meant preventing the Cubs from winning the World Series. Spoken like a true Sox fan
  22. QUOTE(GASHWOUND @ Jun 26, 2005 -> 03:15 AM) Maybe something is wrong with the power supply? Thanks, I woke up thinking along those same lines. I was just wondering and searching to find out what happens if the battery is bad. My first thought was that as long as I was hooked up to an outlet the battery doesn't matter. I'm hoping to find an answer before droping $150 on a new battery. Figured out how to get the error message to stay on the screen. unmountable_boot_ and of course I cannot find the system disk for the laptop.
  23. It seemed that the jury focused in on the fact that the engineer saw the vehicle, it was clearly very close to the tracks, too close to judge if they would clear or not, had plenty of time to stop, and didn't. If you see a kid playing in the street, have time to stop, and decide not to, is it the kids fault or yours?
