From Means in the 6/13/04 Atlanta Game Thread Ain't that pretty

Being voted a starter is greatly over rated, having your own manager select you is greatly over rated,

LOL. What a feast Nuke is laying out. Something for the Buerhle bashers, something for the Thomas bashers, a little something for the Ozzie bashers (maybe too early) I'm eating the whole thing. I kept predicting a 6th place finish, in a 5 team division. Nothing like low expectations The biggest signal Frank sent was when he volunteered to move to #4, something he had never agreed to before. His attitude seems to be productive, and he's smiling more.

I wouldn't rush Maggs back.

Old time reflection The players use to be the mascots. For basically traveling fees, the Cubs starting SS and future WS player, Don Kessinger spoke at my youth baseball banquet. Try that today. Mascots can be fun. Anything that the kids will enjoy is ok by me. But as someone pointed out for every few kids that will love Southpaw, some will be frightened. To a 4 year old Mickey Mouse can be a 6 foot f***ing rat Now remember kids DO NOT talk to strangers, hey kids, go give that green freakish looking mutant a hug

touche but still what are you doing with your share of the money we saved?

Hockey suffers because it is not as TV friendly as the other sports. Hockey is 1000 times better in person. Some of the things that detract it as a tv sports also make it great in person and just a great sport Bad for tv: Too fast, hard for cameras to follow puck No natural breaks to sell beer a.k.a. commercials fights action away from the puck is lost on tv not enough scoring

what an idiot. I'm glad the teams did the right thing. If it was my kid. . .

Or Magglio, right? Wouldn't that seem more likely, given his salary, production, and the fact that it's his walkaway year? Unfortunately, I have to agree. I don't see any other way for the Sox to compete without increasing payroll drastically. The story from the MLB site on Frank's return doesn't sound good as far as the 2004 payroll. Williams flatly states that the $51 million level from 2003 is not expected to increase significantly for this year. Apparently the $12 million or so we offered Colon is going back into Reinsdorf's pockets and not being used to bring in some more talent. I assume the hopeful projection of $60-65 million by many of us was based on our collective assumption that money not spent on Colon would still be spent on improving the team. PK or Magglio will have to go obviously. Those two, Frank, Carlos, Loaiza, Buehrle, and Koch alread account for like $45 million. That's before resigning Sandy or Robbie, or Jose or whever we hope might replace him, or any new pitching. I'm really depressed now What did the payroll settle at?

He's making $9 mil per year guaranteed. I doubt he'll sign elsewhere for much less. At at 30 or 31 yrs of age, I doubt JR would make an aggressive offer. He would look nice in a Sox uniform.

Did MJ or the Barrons buy the bus?
-
The players will play for the highest bidders, whether it's the NHL, WHL, IHL, wherever. I don't think the owners can really withstand a work stoppage. I also do not think they can survive each other. In a choice between two evils, most people choose the evil they know. I'm guessing they drop the puck a week late.

He'll pass on 4/40 to play for his buddy at 3/24. Losing debates to you has made me tougher

They still have the really cool bus?

Hornung: No more Notre Dame broadcasts

I'm not surprised. It shows what one slip of the tongue, or not well thought our remark can do. -
Big Frank leeds the AL in OPS! Congratulations!

Gotta love the death penalty and get tough on personal crime. Not wanting to visit the in-laws. Death to her!

Any Democrat receives low marks from the military, regardless of pedigree. Just like the screen actors guild would give any GOP low marks.

Explain to me why you are so confident in signing Garcia? And how is Vlad the standard in contracts? If Vlad hits a slump, will you still use him as comparison? Is he only the standard for this year, or 2005, 2006, 2007? Plus, you wouldn't take Guerrero either remember? Too much salary on one guy.
-
Trust me. Playing for a buddy will not be a factor. Money, terms, location, potential spot in the rotation, bull pen, offense, pitching coach, NL vs. AL, travel arrangements (private jet, private room) stadium, locker room, ownership, who his agent likes, etc. will all come into play before who the manager of the day is. At least the Sox keep managers for a few seasons and he could be resonablty assured of Oz for three years. This is especially important for a young player. Roger Clemens, at this stage in his career, can afford to pick teams on esoteric reasons, Garcia will not. I'm sorry for being sarcastic. I just realized I'm doing the equivelent of telling an eight year old there is no Santa Clause. (and no, I'm not calling you an eight year old.) I actually appreciate your determination and enthusiasm for losing the team's best player. You have faith in KW and ownership in making things better. I have much less faith. You have faith in signing free agents, I do not. I will accept your argument that it could turn out better. We'll never know, so it realy isn't worth debating anymore.
-
It's the process. This franchise hasn't built anything when they are always tearing down. They lost Colon in the off season and signed no one of significance. There is no guarantee than they will sign anyone next year. You are swapping a known commodity for hope. Is there a set of events that could lead to an improvement in Maggs is gone? Of course. You and CWSGuy have easily presented a wish list of player we could get. In fact we can create one fantasy wish after another. History has shown us time and again that we do not do well competing in the free agent market. What is going to change this year? Using the logic here, we should not bid on anyone earning more than about $8,000,000 or else it will take up too much salary. That eliminates a bunch of prospects. We will not offer 4 years to a pitcher. That will eliminate a bunch of prospects.

Now your age is really showing through. Oh. Ozzie and I are buds, I'm going to turn down a couple extra millions to play for my bud. I'm sorry. Now you've hit the just plain silly level. How much do you think playing for a buddy is worth? A million dollars? BTW, Maggs said he would love to play in Chicago.
