  1. And that comes with being organized. A lot of groups are well organized and get a lot accomplished in thier sphere of interest. Look at the NAACP, NRA, AARP, MLB, etc. The ACLU will probably take up the cause at some point. Plus Stern and Co. have $millions to invest in a lobbying effort. And don't think they will not spend $millions. As a proud member of the Insane Coho Lips, owner of Pet Fishsticks, and a frequest visitor to Dahl's web site, I'm not always tuned into NPR, and the local rock station. I've enjoyed a lot of Stern's show. I also believe he crosses over the line of what should be available on the "free" public airwaves. He is smart enough and talented enough to deal with the line being moved in a couple degrees.
  2. People blame Clinton for not responsing differently. They forget the tail wagging the dog criticism from Republicans. But I have a bigger beef. If it was so obvious, why wasn't all Americans waving flags and singing God Bless America after the first attack? Bush could have run ads showing him responding to the terror attack. Instead he showed footage of the tower. It wasn't an accident those images were shown. He had months and months to plan this strategy. Remember, this is for his personal gain. This wasn't a public service announcement. He is selling a product called President Bush. To use this to sell a product is wrong. And I would be saying the same thing if Kerry used the footage in his ads. Two weeks ago I was on the fence between Kerry and Bush. I was hoping W would dump Chaney. So far he is moving himself further and further to the conservative end of the spectrum. IMHO he should be moving closer to the moderate and picking up moderate Dems who believe Kerry may be too liberal for their taste.
  3. And the point I am trying to make (and I guess not very well) is that we should not have an anything goes over the airwaves. Sterns argument is (at the minimum) my show is ok, it's the religious wackos coming after me. I believe from other discussion you would not describe yourself as a religious wacko. You have agreed that we should have some form of censorship. I believe every American should have a voice in where the line is drawn. To disregard someone because they attend a worship service, or live in the suburbs, or vote Republican, is wrong. For many Americans Stern's show crosses their boundry of decent and indecent. It is their right and I would add responsibility, to work towards regulations that they agree with. I also believe it is Sterns and others who would go further to work towards regulations they can live with. The healthy debate and discourse helps America to set standards and laws we all can live with. I'm defending Bush and his cronies in this thread, and ripping the boy in another. No wonder neither party wants me.
  4. I don't buy into censorship too much - if you don't like it change the channel. There are several things I find offensive, so I don't buy them/look at them. It seems like a simple solution to me... If you don't like pornography change the channel. Or are you in favor of censoring X-rated material from WGN? So if you are in favor of some censoring does it not come down to where we will draw the line? I felt a certain feeling here that if someone draws the line stopping something that a person likes, they dismiss the person's opinion as a religious wacko. It would be like someone saying you live in the suburbs and we know how *those* people think. There is a difference between what is played over public airwaves and what is distributed via print or other private forms of communication. Society has an obligation to manage the public airwaves. This all comes down to where people want to draw the line. Some people would find it entertaining to hear people having sex during their afternoon drive time. They will say that anyone who objects can just turn the station.
  5. Or Willie the Wimp by Stevie Ray Vaughn Could they get him a Caddilac to take him to the batters box?
  6. Damn, they didn't mention the terrific job he did leading the Broncs of University of Texas - Pan American I'll bet he leaves that off his resume
  7. So you would think it is ok for WGN's after school special to be X-rated pornography? Because you could just change the channel. Every American has a voice in what we allow on the airwaves. To say that everyone who thinks Stern's show oversteps the bounds is just part of some religious group so their opinion is somehow less important or wrong, is not any more valid than saying everyone who agrees that Stern's show is OK is a morally bankrupt athiest and their opinion does not matter. Most religious groups believe sex between and adult and a 10 year old is wrong. Some groups believe it is ok. Should we change consent laws because it's just a religious thing? How about murder or stealing? Every American has a right to their opinion. They do not give up that right because they walk into a Mosque, Temple, Church, or simply meditate each morning. To believe that everyone who is "religious" thinks the same way is simplistic at best.
  8. Of course our opinions don't matter since we are just a baseball group. The only people who can freely comment on any public policy are those who are not affiliated with any group or organization. We can dismiss some people because they are National Geographic subscribers so they are environmental wackos, these people hang out in Internet bulleting boards so they are fanatics, etc. Jim's opinion doesn't matter because he's sold his soul to the Republican party. Vince's doesn't matter because he sold his soul to the Dem party. As long as we can identify someone with a group their opinion isn't valid. Or does that only apply if they are religious? The only Americans who can have an opinion are the atheists.
  9. Campaign Staff "Let's use your leadership after 9-11 in an ad" Bush "Great idea. But Americans may have forgotten that those towers were destroyed, I know I forget sometimes and y'all have to remind me." Staff "We could show footage of the towers and a flag draped casket to remind them. That way we won't have to spend as much time explaining what you actually did" Bush "Great idea. Maybe the folks will confuse me with that Rudy guy who was in all the tv spots" Maybe you needed the president to tell you to display a flag or go to a prayer service or memorial service, maybe you needed the president to tell you to donate to the Red Cross or crawl at ground zero on your hands and knees for days trying to find a survivor. Most Americans did not. He should take credit for what he did. To show the grave of the thousands who were not found is wrong and insensitive.
  10. I would be outraged if kerry used pictures of flag draped caskets to remind us of VN Have some respect for the dead. Or does that not matter to the GOP?

  12. If your family dies in a house fire, and I was running for fire chief, would you mind if I showed your house going up in flames and your family dying inside? "Sorry buddy, I know losing your wife and kids was rough, watching them die and all, but I did a damn fine job afterwards and I want everyone to know." Gross. He is using a national tradegy to get re-elected. He is trying to confuse the spontanious outpouring of national pride and sympathy as something he did. Do you believe we wouldn't have put up flags, held prayer services, and other memorials if someone else was president? Are Americans so stupid they needed W to tell us how to react? Do not use a national trategy for personal gain.

    Who said this?

I invite you to explain how cutting taxes and increasing spending helps. So far no one has been able to explain how cutting taxes increases money going to Washington. I am certain it helped Bush raise $170,000,000 so far for his campaign.
  14. I want to party at Steff's house
  15. And don't forget Koch became a feared closer (by fans not hitters), Kong continued his torrid (or is that horrid) hitting. We are so much better this year than last.

    Concert for George

I'd go with Ringo, what's the line? While we are on the sick subject, I use to participate in a death pool. Scoring was simple 100 less the persons age. Pick any 25 celebrities. We had a couple definitions on celebrity and you couldn't be famous because you were going to die, (death row inmates, etc.)
  17. Welcome to the board. Screww MLB and all the otehr ways. Join us for gamethreads. We'll have a couple people with TVs and they'll keep us informed.
  18. I guess my opinion doesn't matter just yet because I can not vote, but I would vote for Bush in this election. And the reply from cwsox . . . Your opinion does count, very much. But consider that God did not allow you to be old enough to vote in this election for God's own reasons....
  19. Hell, I'll take our lineup over the Yankees, Red Sox, A's, Angels, Astros, Cubs, anyday of the week. No talent? Why we have what's his name at 2nd and what's his name at center, and what's his name will be leading off, and the thrilling competition for our 5th starter spot.
  20. Yeah how could they possibly think a commercial featuring a future HoF pitcher would be better than one featuring the Sox biggest off season aquisition - the nice new leather chair for JR. I'm sorry, Uribe couldn't be a spokesperson for Checker taxis. Maybe Zero? It's a Cubs town and after this season, we'll be lucky if we get coverage on page 14 of the sports section. It's a nightmare I tell you.
  21. Yeah, do we want players that won't help teammates commit adultry while on the road? Where is the team spirit in that? Willie dude if we loose some games because a starter can't release some tension with a crack whore on the road I'm gonna be pissed. . .
