In the past week I've run past people Wearing ankle weights and jogging Wearing a rubber looking suit while jogging in 90 degree weather Doing giant windmills while holding weights. Do you say something or just let them be stupid?

Of course a lot of posters also wanted Ozzie's head in 2005 during the September slide. We could have two or three managers a year based on some fans opinions.

The idea that it could have been consensual is just ridiculous. Dad's letter was horrible. The sentence is a throw back to the 1950s and the judge made a huge mistake. There is an issue here that isn't neat and tidy. It is obvious that at some point a woman has had too much to drink and can't consent. And we really should not hold her responsible for drinking too much and having something bad happen. We also shouldn't treat people differently based on sex. If a guy is raped by another guy or a woman, the same consequences should apply to the rapist. The issue that I struggle with is at some point is the other person too drunk to be responsible for their actions? Being drunk shouldn't be an excuse for rape. Not in this case but given an example of two drunks having sex, who has raped who?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 8, 2016 -> 09:11 AM) I should have made the thread you're Rick Hahn, you want to fire Robin. You have to make your case to JR. JR is going to want some logic that says a guy like Rick Renteria will produce more wins. The Ron Washington line, that's how baseball go, won't work. Would you be willing to put your neck and job on the line that a guy like Renteria would translate into more wins? What's your ammo? And how are you going to measure more wins? Based on this (temporary) slump that the team would have played out of anyways (no way to predict one way or another)? Based on year to date? Based on the hot start? There just isn't any objective evidence after the fact.

Ventura has had his opportunity. This offseason he should be replaced. It may only result in a couple three more wins but it is the accumulation of all of those small improvements that make the difference. I believe he could be a very good to great manager in the right position. This just isn't the right time nor position.

I think the vast majority of people here will agree that JR is among the owners that are the slowest to change and never make moves based on current events. There are also some owners who are way too quick and meddle way too much. Where is the balance? Overreacting to good or bad usually doesn't result in your best decisions. Waiting until all hope is lost is equally damning.

Was he the start of the polarizing, made for TV, sports celebrity who managed his career with a knack for publicity or did he just perfect it? I was a big fan even though I never was a huge boxing fan. He transcended the sports world like few athletes have.

Does anyone remember how he tanked his last season here to get fired and take another position?

I was just about to post the comment above. Hmm LH power hitter from the NL, where have I heard this before? For it's one, two, three strikes you're out . . . Just punch me in the throat instead.

QUOTE (SonofaRoache @ Jun 7, 2016 -> 10:12 AM) I was under the impression managers actually conducted and oversaw events called practices where they went over hitting, fielding, pitching, bunting, and real game situations to help the players get better. Guess I was wrong. Very little actually. During the regular season there just isn't any time. That's what they have been doing before getting to the show. From there coaches take over.

QUOTE (Scoots @ Jun 7, 2016 -> 07:08 AM) Those with the louder personalities typically are the ones that are heard the most because, well, they are loud, and want people to do loud things. Not everyone is loud, however. The true art of managing is behind the scenes.

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jun 7, 2016 -> 07:18 AM) Yes he did, but that's not my point. What I said was just having White Sox ties does not "automatically" qualify you to be manager of the team. As for the Cubs getting "lucky" to get Rizzo, Bryant and Arrieta, that's just sour grapes from a Sox fan. They run a good baseball operation over there, plain and simple. That wasn't the case for three+ decades when the Tribune Company owned the clubover 100 years, but it *maybe* is now. They have shrewd baseball men at the top of the house who have done quite well in several trades and in the draft. Give the devil his due - they've put together a team that is now in the throes of achieving sustainable success for *1/3rd of a season*. Oh for the day when we can make a similar claim for our Sox! Fixed. After a few decades you realize that sustained success isn't that easy to predict. I remember the string of Bear's Super Bowls in the 1980s. I believe they were going to be the dynasty.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 6, 2016 -> 03:29 PM) Shields could be a solid #2 if they can control his gopher balls and work with his velocity loss. Which would be a surprising but not shocking upside. More likely a serviceable #3/4 on a slow decline for three years then a retirement party.

How many players get drafted versus make the show? 25 to 1 maybe? How many will produce anything of merit 100 drafted to 1 dependable day to day player?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 2, 2016 -> 03:12 PM) Especially a guy like Byrd who has already been suspended. He knew what he was taking. I think the innocent mistake does happen once in a great while, but it would surprise me if most of the busted don't have other things the tests haven't caught up with in their systems as well. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 2, 2016 -> 03:20 PM) I guarantee the honest mistake happens every now and then. Unfortunately no one is going to believe when more often than not that's definitely not the case. I am certain there are some honest mistakes. But those can't be excused. No one takes a supplement by accident. If you are subject to drug screening and testing, you better be 100% certain of everything you put in your body. No other policy works.

QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Jun 3, 2016 -> 01:19 PM) Crazy thing about the rip currents is they are almost never more than 20 or 30 yards wide. People feel like they're supposed to swim parallel to shore mile after mile, but really you get out of them in like 30 seconds most of the time. If you know what you're doing you can use them on purpose to speed you up when swimming out. Those are fun when you are going out on a board. I've never done it while swimming, I was listening to a guy that said he felt he was being pulled under as well as out. The guy that was helping him wasn't a great swimmer so the decision to leave him behind wasn't just because he didn't seem to be drowning.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 6, 2016 -> 02:19 PM) Love how LaRaza's name is being thrown out there like a terrorist organization or ACORN. They're much more like the NAACP or Cesar Chavez's/Dolores Huerta's migrant farm workers' association in reality. I met her when she was being honored by Weslaco, Texas (even named a street for her). Amazing woman. I really enjoyed her presentation.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 6, 2016 -> 02:58 PM) If that is what those guys "cost", than I'd argue the trade isn't a no brainer since we are paying "what they cost" plus giving up assets. While Tatis is a long-shot, he is still a very talented long-shot for his age and someone we committed valuable international FA resources to and who has received pretty positive early reviews. I don't consider that a nobody. If it was just Johnson, I'd have less to complain about, but Tatis was what this org had to make strides on (actually getting meaningful contributions from its international front and while he was 5 years down the road, it takes a long time to do things like this) and it takes time to build up a system (something we continue to not do). And this is coming from someone who is all for leveraging prospects for trading and filling other needs. Five years of baseball development is such a crapshoot that I just can't get excited about it any more.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 6, 2016 -> 01:08 PM) I have no special insight into the Padres but "owner who put a lot of money into a player and then loses his temper at that player after an embarrassing game and 1.5 frustrating seasons after he spent a lot of money and was promised results and then the team has to dump the player as fast as possible" doesn't seem like an impossible sequence to me. The owner jumping on him before the trade was announced but while the trade was done seems like impressive enough 3-dimensional chess playing that my instinct is that an owner-outburst seems more likely to me. I agree that seems like the most likely scenario.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jun 6, 2016 -> 09:54 AM) What other organizations have a manager who had never coached or managed an inning at any professional level and had been out of baseball for a decade before named manger? We night hire a retread, but people learn from their experiences.... but you need that depth of experience from which to learn. I meant Ventura today. He now has the experience you are talking about, has achieved some success, etc.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 6, 2016 -> 12:28 PM) There is still 7 weeks to do so, and Rick made it clear that they are still actively shopping for improvements. I have no doubt they would love to find another power hitting OF. I agree.

QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Jun 6, 2016 -> 10:16 AM) Well one question I have to ask is: how many World Series champions had sh*tty managers? That's one way to look at it. While they won? None. At some point later? All of them with possibly the exception of Tommy Lasorda. You win a World Series and everyone thinks you are a great manager, then a few years later the fans want your head. Then, if you are say a Larussa you become a great manager again. At least in the eyes of the fans.

It would have been nice to have someone available to fill the offensive hole, but that wasn't to be. No use sitting around waiting and not doing anything else to improve the team. This was an modest improvement which becomes huge *if* other things fall in place.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 6, 2016 -> 09:03 AM) Your 2 year old couldn't apparently see that we need pitching too? You prioritize the problems and only handle the second biggest problem after fixing the first.
