How is it an academic problem? If someone has a C in math what should that represent?

QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ May 25, 2016 -> 08:36 PM) Just wanted to give everyone an update. I ended up ordering engraved flashlights. It was gonna be either this or engraved ammo boxes, but my fiancee thought the flashlights was moreof a "Don" thing since I collect flashlights and I always look for a certain kind. These are the ones I ordered... http://www.lazerdesigns.com/Merchant2/merc...ct_Code=FL17042 1,050 lumens, 5 lighting modes, durable build, should give good battery life as well. I like it.

Game Thread: 5/26 Sox vs. Royals, 7:15pm - PPD

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ May 26, 2016 -> 09:54 AM) This will be the 11th start this season by a Sox 5th starter. They are 0-7 so far. That's 1996 and 2003 bad. Maybe the 11th time is the charm? LOL. Mark But wins don't matter in evaluating a pitcher Come'on give us a no decision from the starter! -

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ May 26, 2016 -> 10:23 AM) For us, it's a 70 or above and 9 or fewer absences Wow. I would have exactly one senior taking the exam and chances are he would be absent anyways.

Another overreaction I'm done with this team thread
Texsox replied to kitekrazy's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I'm sitting here wondering how many franchises deserve dedicated fans over the past 50 years. Yankees? Dodgers? Cardinals? Braves? Red Sox? I have to believe our Sox are somewhere in the upper half. -
What rent my son paid I gave back to him when he moved out. I don't know if he realized the amount of his housewarming gift happened to be just a little more than what he paid.
-
Is this a common thing? Where I teach any senior who has an 80 or above average for the semester and year for one year courses, three or less absences, and satisfactory citizenship is exempt from finals. About 70% of my AP Seniors will not be taking finals. I like this. Less for me to grade.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 26, 2016 -> 10:13 AM) Nick Swisher was tipping his pitches? That is news to me. I was thinking the same thing.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 26, 2016 -> 10:06 AM) If my kid graduates and moves back in to try and save money for their own place I'm perfectly fine with that. If they don't graduate, come home and we work out a rent agreement, I'm ok with that too. There will be no freeloading, that is not going to be accepted. So if the have a college degree they can stay rent free, without a college degree, they must pay rent? I like it. It's a nice incentive to finish college.

Grading papers, gardening, preparing for my summer golf camp, getting finals in place . . .

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 26, 2016 -> 09:33 AM) I do believe that school education is more than just what you learn from a test. Meeting a deadline with timely work is something that everyone is going to do no matter what job they do for a living. To me that is a critical lesson that is much better to learn as young as possible. But is it an academic or a behavioral problem?
-
There are cultural and societal differences. At the other end of the spectrum are older Americans moving in with their kids. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/more-agin...kids-2014-11-18 http://www.aarp.org/money/budgeting-saving...-with-kids.html

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 26, 2016 -> 09:16 AM) It's an interesting conflict and I know my wife's talked about it. How much of schooling is about teaching behaviors versus teaching the material? A "absolutely no late work" or "heavily penalized late work" policy will discourage a student from finishing work they're late on--they might learn a lesson about doing it on time (or maybe they won't!), but they won't learn the course material. And of course that now ties back into many teachers' evaluations being based on testing and student growth, stuff that just measures how much material they're learning and not timeliness, classroom behavior, etc. Or as I like to think, if the highest grade that can be earned is a 70, why should a student do more than 70 work? I will give full credit, but I expect a better product if you take extra time. So what may be a 100 when turned in on time, may only be a 90 if you take an extra week. But if you greatly exceed what was a 100 on time, you could still earn a 100 turning it in a week late.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 26, 2016 -> 08:58 AM) You don't think teaching timeliness of work is important at that age? It is. But is it an academic or a behavior problem? Teaching kids to stay on task and not bother classmates is important. Should we deduct points on an assignment if they talk during it? Basically if you look at the required material that needs to be taught and the learning outcomes, timeliness does not appear anywhere. I am conflicted as anyone, but by focusing on what a child learns, and not how or when, I believe I am a more productive teacher. And aren't there some things that parents can teach as well? There is a lot more they can do than a teacher taking off some points on an assignment.

Caulfield For the record I wasn't directly responding to your post. Sorry if it seems like I was. I was speaking more to the general mood in multiple threads. -

Is it better to have won and lost than never to have won at all? It feels like many on the board wish we had been .500 from the start. -
Fire Robin. Bring Back Ozzie. Do It Now
Texsox replied to sin city sox fan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
There are two different issues here, Robin and Ozzie. Robin's demeanor reminds me of Tony L during his tenure as manager. I think he will be appreciated more years after his career. Today it is very frustrating. Ozzie? Seriously why even bring up his name? He will never work in baseball again. Nostalgia is dangerous. -
QUOTE (shipps @ May 25, 2016 -> 02:41 PM) Seriously? I am having a hard time not making a smart ass comment about someone running A HALF OF A MARATHON and boasting about it with a bumper sticker. Think of it as more than twice a 10k meter.

Hey, my daughter is putting a 50 and a 24 hour on her Jeep to mark the 50 mile and 24 hour races she has run. But actually, what bumper stick isn't lame? Your favorite sports team? College? Vacation spot? CB Handle?

How many wins will Chris Sale have this season?
Texsox replied to ChiSoxFanMike's topic in Pale Hose Talk
And I'm not saying that wins is some major factor and has huge significance. I think it is one piece of information that should be fit in when evaluating a pitcher. Comparing his win total to other pitchers on his staff with their stats may reveal subjective information. How much you want to value motivation, desire, etc is up to you. But totally dismissing wins dismisses how well a player can get his team playing behind and for him. Unlike most other sports, baseball is the only sport where wins are tracked so publicly for an individual player. Football comes kind of close, but nothing like baseball. Again, it isn't a huge factor, but I believe it shouldn't be overlooked or automatically dismissed. -
How many wins will Chris Sale have this season?
Texsox replied to ChiSoxFanMike's topic in Pale Hose Talk
How would you explain a pitcher with more wins than another pitcher on the same team with worst stats? Do you factor in team chemistry or motivation in judging a team? -
Exactly. WGN was beaming across the country via cable while the Sox where on pay TV. All the shut-ins could watch day games. It was all that was on TV
