  1. QUOTE (Coach @ Jun 6, 2016 -> 06:11 AM) Over the weekend, a Sox reporter stated Erik Johnson will someday be a good pitcher but just not on the White Sox. I asked him why. I am still waiting for an answer. Anyone want to comment? Please feel free. This organization has done about all it can do with him. Perhaps new coaches, new ball park, teammates, a boost of confidence that he is going someplace that really wants him and gone from the team that didn't want him no more . . .
  2. Let's look at a couple items. Is the team's record below expectations? Are there players playing below expectations? Are there players not being used in a way to maximize their abilities? Does it appear that the manager has lost hope and is managing to lose? (Think OZ when he wanted to go to Miami) Is there discord in the clubhouse? Coaching staff? Is there discord in the staff that is hurting the team? Are there other explanations for the team's skid other than poor managing? (Lack of talent, holes) I'm not certain that firing Ventura would result in a turn back to a 100 win pace. I wish it was that simple. Do it to make the fans feel better but it would be a temporary fix to fan morale.
  3. QUOTE (WBWSF @ Jun 5, 2016 -> 06:40 PM) Robin Ventura gets replaced by Terry Bevington. He's staying in baseball shape in the unaffiliated leagues. Nice guy to the fans.
  4. I wonder why it is that all over baseball the stupidest people are managing while millions of fans are sitting in the stands who could do it better. Just follow the stats and conventional wisdom. All it really takes is a decent phone and a good internet connection. Look up what to do in each situation and do it. Jeez, how simple can it be?
  5. QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 3, 2016 -> 11:10 AM) Based on who they played and where they played the games, I think 29-25 is right where the Sox should be. But when you start 19-8 the first 27, and then go 10-17 the next 27---and in the process go 1-5 against the Royals---it's absolutely a shame the Sox aren't at least 31-23 at the 1/3 mark. You can have any perspective on this you want to make yourself feel better. But make no mistake, the season series against the teams in the division are a big deal. Any deficit has to be made up against other teams--and that's tough to do. I'm trying for a more modern stats only approach that eliminates old fashioned items like momentum and other nonsense that can't be measured. But I agree with your point that divisional losses do carry additional weight in that you gain a full game in the division.

Love it or list it? THere is a reason that show exists. It is a tough decision usually.
  7. QUOTE (Special K @ Jun 5, 2016 -> 08:19 AM) Tex, that's mildly insulting. Like 200 of my posts have been this year. But in any event, we are still only 2 games back after this awful stretch. I think we need offense more than starting pitching. But we are still very much in contention and hopefully Shields can be a contributing factor to doing that. There are a small but vocal group of posters that only seem to show up to gloat that the team is failing. They represent about 80% of the complaints to mods that we receive. It's anyone's choice to follow a team they hate and which makes them feel horrible (although I wonder why). But when they are trolling other members it gets looked at. And there is a difference between feeling horrible when the team doing poorly and posting that and gloating that the team is doing horrible and that poster feels great that they were proven right about what a horrible team it is. The posters that genuinely seem to feel better when the team is doing worse really bring the site down even further than it naturally would.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 4, 2016 -> 05:33 PM) And this is one of the two reasons I haven't been posting. Because if you're not a fan of this team, its now personal for too many people. It makes perfect sense to me that if you aren't a fan of the team to not post here. It seems the problem is all the non fans come around to make the fans feel even worse about the team. The gloating that the team is horrible would play better at a division rival site than the Sox fan forum. The fans of the team already feel bad, why should the site allow non fans of the team to show up during the rough times to hate on the team? Trolls are trolls. This is a prime example. You don't post when the team is winning. As soon as they drop from first, you arrive to make the fans feel even worse. Well congratulations you spread your unhappiness.

QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 3, 2016 -> 11:22 AM) Well that's lame. I didn't know that. If a guest is over they're going to think there's something wrong with the light. Only if they aren't cool enough to have LEDs. Just say with Hipster sarcasm, I guess you are still using Edison's invention from 100 years ago . . .
  10. It doesn't look like what you expect. When I ran a sea base for the Boy Scouts we used a similar video to make people aware.
  11. A loss is a loss no matter if it is game one, 47, or 162. No matter if it is a blown lead or a blow out. No matter if it comes after 6 other loses or 15 wins. As SS2k5 presented the stats it isn't a bad place to be.

QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 3, 2016 -> 09:08 AM) Ok home electricians, here's a question: I installed some Ikea under cabinet lights this weekend. The Omlopp LED spotlight kit, 4 lights that plug into a transformer that is plugged into a wall. When I flip the switch, there's a good half second to full second delay before the lights come on. Any ideas why? The old light that was connected to the switch (hard wired) did not have this issue. I took that down and added an outlet and then plugged the transformer into that. No power issues, doesn't matter how many lights are plugged into the transformer. There's still the delay. I'm thinking maybe the transformer is bad? Or maybe the switch somehow went bad coincidentally? That is considered normal with LEDs. It is just the amount of time it takes for the energy to build up within the diode.

I will be covering my 12x22 patio over the next couple weeks. We're still deciding between a couple designs. I'm starting to opt for the simplest to build.
  15. QUOTE (brett05 @ Jun 3, 2016 -> 07:40 AM) It's more of he's better than the other two remaining candidates. Not much more to say than that. This is not better on a world stage.
  16. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jun 2, 2016 -> 11:34 PM) Nicely said. I agree that winding the boomers down is going to be full of available money since they have most of it. I agree about the businessman too. A career being an unskilled businessman is looking bleaker. Any company can just hire younger people without mouths to feed for much less. Scary proposition to sell yourself as a good manager in business and make a career out of it. How hard is it to tell a younger person to "watch ted & margaret, and keep track of these files, and answer these phones, manage these accounts. If you get sick of it I'll jist hire that dude over there since all you are is a warm body that follows orders". I know that was vague and impersonal but it's just tough being unskilled with so many people now. Management is no longer a skill. It's just next man up. There's gonna be a ton of money made for whoever creates dense communities for the baby-boomers who got passed over to live in. Like all the guys who had cush "management" positions ripped out from under them in the last decade and now they are going to retire broke working part time at home depot and whatnot. The industry I started in, electronic distribution was founded by individuals who were excellent salespeople. They took pride in selling items at a fair prices and paying their employees well would could deliver. Then as a few companies were taken over by large corporations they knocked the margins ways down and hired twice the staff at one third the cost each and sent them out with cheaper prices. The better salespeople who commended a premium based on their customer service skills, long term relationships with customers, etc. were squeezed out by cheaper prices. Now with everyone following that approach you still have salespeople busting their butts, but now they are doing it for half the pay of a generation before. Plus, because they can, a college degree is required for most of the companies. Hell, I remember working with a guy who was hired because the sales manager met him while he was painting the offices. They had a mess up, the painter worked his ass to make us happy and was so customer orientated he was almost hired on the spot. He went on to have a great career for a while.
  17. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 3, 2016 -> 05:30 AM) I don't think being a racist piece of garbage creates an actual "conflict of interest" I can't believe people can read comments like this and believe he would be an effective president.
  18. I prefer grass. I like the fast low stuff.
  19. Every career politician at some point will endorse his party's nominee.
  20. This doesn't come up often but I seem to remember some trades that went down right after the draft that were prearranged. Draft this guy and we'll trade this for that kind of thing.
  21. I have no sympathy for these guys and the supplements. When it is your job to know what you eat and drink contains and that you could lose your career for eating or drinking the wrong stuff you just make damn certain the ingredients are not banned. But at his age, he's just trying to hang on and not have to work a "real job".
  22. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 2, 2016 -> 08:32 AM) Regardless, people shouldn't vote for Hillary because she would be the 'first woman', just like people should not have voted for Obama because he would have been the 'first black'. if you think they can do they job, fine. But to vote simply because they would be the 'first' is idiotic. First person without any government agency or elected position experience?
  23. It feels like the most focal Bernie and Don supporters are new voters.
  24. I just graded the last final. It's all over except for the paperwork. Then a week off. A few weeks of training. A writing project in New Mexico. Family in Chicago and Wisconsin. Another training. And we start over again.
  25. QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 2, 2016 -> 11:25 AM) You cant trade draft picks in baseball. Except compensation picks iirc
