QUOTE (JPN366 @ May 25, 2016 -> 11:35 AM) This. I also don't understand why so many people have the Yeti stickers on their cars. But I am in the deep south, so they usually have Duck Commander and Trump stickers too. I can't explain why after spending $400 you would also want to advertise. I see the coolers chained to trucks.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 25, 2016 -> 08:21 AM) If you've got a gas grill already and want to give smoking a try without investing in a whole separate appliance, you can easily set up 2-zone heating and use your grill as a smoker. I've done this a few times. One issue that I didn't really think about until later, my side fire box unit cooks from the top as hot air flows from the firebox across the grill and out the stack. My gas grill had more heat low. I usually cook my brisket meat side up to start. With the grill meat side down seems to be better.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 25, 2016 -> 11:08 AM) Not everyone had such a rosy view of Reagan and his right-wing conservatism. During his presidency it wasn't as pronounced as years later. I remember thinking we would be tossing nuclear weapons around. I could not image anyone actually voting for him. (I didn't).

It doesn't have to be a Republican, it could be a Dem.

I'm getting ready for my favorite lesson. I have my seniors write down (in code if they prefer) every terrible thing that has happened to them. All the things they have been told they can not do. All the lies. All that kind of stuff. Then we pass the trash can and they rip it up. Throw it away. We're leaving that in high school. Then I pass out a poem, this year Nothing Gold Can Stay. I have them section the back of the page into fourths. Using just one fourth of the page I have them write all the positive things. All of their very best attributes. Everything they know to be true. Then we discuss how this is the stuff that matters. Diplomas, degrees, awards, are all like shields, we can wave them around and they may help. But who they are and who they will become is armor. And since they are all 18 and about to be high school graduates at the end of class I say "good by class" and they say "Goodbye Jim". In the south, calling an adult by their first name is a big deal. I do it to show that they are adults and have a different place in the world. Like every year, I'm going to miss most of these people.

They support the Spurs, but they have to be the easiest pro team to support. Class and wins. The Missions draw well. We just got a pro soccer team . . .

In a state where high schools build $70 million dollar stadiums, I find it interesting a pro team can get by only spending a billion.

But what Reagan was a master at was the role of cheerleader in chief which we badly needed at the time. After the Nixon - Ford - Carter years we needed someone to ride in on the white horse (literally) with a swagger and smile, and make America feel good about themselves. We went from holding our head down to a brash confidence. In my lifetime, (just a little too young to remember Kennedy) he was the gold standard. Clinton came close. After the old guy club, 12 years of grandfathers running the country, he comes into office to Fleetwood Mac and blowing his saxophone. Hell, that young vigor is partly why we've given him such a pass in regards to Monica and others. Again, a huge shift in attitude. I don't see a positive attitude change after this election. Probably after the next one.
-
I believe the greatest problem we still have from the Reagan years was he united the Dems and his party in high deficits. No longer do we have tax and spend Dems and don't tax and don't spend Reps. Now we have cut taxes and spend, spend, spend.

It seemed like more of a comment on how the Cubs get all the press and the Sox are shuffled to second team status. Which is true for most of the country. Here in Texas, despite having AL teams, people think of the Cubs when they think Chicago baseball. Same in more areas of the country.

How many wins will Chris Sale have this season?
Texsox replied to ChiSoxFanMike's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (3GamesToLove @ May 25, 2016 -> 08:08 AM) This is silly. Nobody is saying that wins aren't important. They're obviously the point of the game. Pitcher wins, on the other hand, are not the same thing as wins, and are not terribly important. The rule is convoluted and arbitrary. Which tosses all the intangibles out the window. There is no such thing as momentum, confidence, etc. We play the games with humans, not computer models. Humans bring emotion and character to whatever they do. Do the players get up just a little more knowing who is on the mound? Do they feel like they owe it to some pitchers? While I agree wins are not THE best measure of a pitcher, but spend some time coaching and you see how much emotion can change things. -
The Extreme 5 or 6 is what I am looking at.

I was just about to pull the trigger on a Yeti cooler and stopped. I'm wondering if I really want an ice chest that I have to worry about getting stolen. My daughter has one and yes, it seems great, but mine will be sitting out at campsites and sitting covered in the back of my truck. Worth it? I just would be so pissed if I had my $400 cooler stolen along with all the provisions.

Garcia not playing the last few games
Texsox replied to Thomas_Ventura_Roberts's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Because it has been taking 90+ wins to win the division most years. The wild card isn't anything I like to count on. Winning the division is. -

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ May 23, 2016 -> 04:20 PM) I do not agree that everything is going right, nor does this team need everything to go right. Plenty has gone wrong and they're still in first place. You're acting like this is a true talent 70-win team. Rollins, Navarro and Avila are all hitting worse than last year, with Jackson and Abreu hitting significantly worse than last year. Sale and Quintana have done amazingly well, but that's almost canceled out by the dropoff we have experienced from Rodon and Danks compared to last year (the 5th spot was a concern going into the year but it's been even worse than expected). Latos had a great start, but has already pitched poorly enough recently to get his numbers back to where projections had him. The bullpen pitched over its head in April, but a lot of that luck was canceled out by the disastrous last couple of weeks. I guess I'm just not seeing all the luck you're seeing. Lawrie and Avi have played above expectations but not outrageously so, Frazier is pretty much in line with what we expected, Melky bounced back to his 2014 numbers, and Eaton has been hitting like this since last May. Since you still haven't answered, who are the smoke and mirrors players? And why does someone playing above expectations mean they're certain to come back down, but someone underperforming doesn't mean they'll go back up? Everything is certainly not "going right", that seems like a gross exaggeration to fit your narrative. Are you that high on the Indians/Royals/Tigers or am I just missing something here? What is the true talent of the White Sox in your opinion? Sure not many predictions had the White Sox making the playoffs, but it wasn't something that was totally unexpected either. Even Fangraphs writer Dave Cameron, who rarely says anything positive about the White Sox, wrote that there was a good chance the Sox would be good this year. No one thought the team was going to keep winning at a .700 win pace, but the talent of this team is still a lot better than you're giving it credit for. I see them as an 88 win team talent wise (preseason prediction). I believe at the time I made the original post they were on pace to win 95 to 100 games. I didn't think I was calling them a terrible baseball team, at least that is not my opinion. I just believe they would be overachieving to win 95 games and they would need everything to fall in place. You believe they have the talent to win 95 wins. I hope you are correct. But out of 78 votes in the pre season prediction thread, 4 people had them winning more than 94 games. You had them at 84 games in that same thread. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=98487 -

The truly innovative things that would need to be done would so enrage purists and a lot of the average fans. Instead of 4 balls and 3 strikes make it 3-2 or even 3-3. Put pitchers on a pitch clock, add or subtract time by having runners on base. Limit pitching changes in a couple ways. Relievers must pitch to a minimum of 2 batters. Except for extra inning games, limit a team to three or four pitchers. To truly get the average game down by 15 minutes, which is where it needs to be, major changes would have to take place.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 24, 2016 -> 12:17 AM) Seriously folks, Hillary gives a boring 20 minute speech and makes this kind of money? You explain to me why this person should be President? http://dailycaller.com/2016/05/23/rush-lim...e-the-election/ This one is especially appalling. Do people think haters are making this stuff up? I've never heard of such easy money in my life. Even Michael Jordan probably can't get that kind of appearance money. http://dailycaller.com/2016/05/11/exclusiv...ry-100-million/ I'm not trying to be a dick, just understand your passion for such an evil person at least in Greg's opinion. And probably raises 5x that for the organization that invited her. Like MJ, the great ones don't look like they are trying.
