  1. One caution, looking at a one or two year snap shot is not the entire picture. It could be said that some of these guys were underpaid for a couple early years on their contracts, and then are overpaid at the end. Guys will fall off towards the end of their careers, yet how many multi-year deals do we see with decreasing terms? In Paulie's case, the team is now paying back that "hometown" discount from the early part of his contract.
  2. I was just thinking, what is K-Dubs next position in baseball? With the Sox? Moving to a bigger stage? He's about at the point where his personal value is probably peaked or slightly down from a few years ago. But he has proven he can GM a team to a WS win, then keep them around the top for years after. He is doing it with a larger payroll than most, but still has a knack for pulling guys off the scrap pile. And to think not that long ago, I, and others, wanted his head.
  3. I am certain the marketing splash will be Rios and Peavey for a full season.
  4. I thnk the problem we have is also rooted in a feeling among the "out party faithfuls" who want to see the President (Bush or now Obama) fail so they can say I told you so, etc. Amazing to me in this is that they desire this even if it makes their own lot in life worse. And we could dismiss as the lunatic fringe in both parties, but I believe there are enough to make it more than just the fringe. We have turned politics into a high stakes battle of coke v. pepsi, mac v. pc, or Bears v. Packers.
  5. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 06:45 AM) Right you are, Ni. . . half-way anyway (actually 1/3 right). There is one more big musician who woodshedded with Frank before starting up Little Feat, and one of slightly lesser stature. You got the game though. Please submit a questio if you care too, since your brain is now bursting with Zappa factoids. In the meantime, here's another one: Connect FZ with Journey. Aynsley Dunbar went from working with FZ to working with Journey. Frank Zappa to ELO
  6. X stalls the list again, and should not even be in the English alphabet
  7. Not me. I love old catchers and young pitchers. Long walks on South Padre Island's beaches. Can he play left?
  8. All politics is local Unemployment is as local as it gets. For 99% of Americans the only unemployment rate we care about begins and ends at our driveway. I know way too many talented people that are still actively looking. That's all I need to know. The rest is all mouse sweat and floofy dust.
  9. Generally speaking, what you are paying for is consistent production without much risk. If you can afford it, that is nice. But most teams cannot, so they look for the less expensive and hope they come through, and some will.
  10. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 07:54 PM) sorry tex, i'm not going to submit to your pity party while we still don't know who our R or LF will be. no pity party, just underwhelmed. I know who they were, and even this is an upgrade. I am hoping that we're not going to hear blah blah economics, blah blah, we're excited, opening day LFer, blah blah blah
  11. If the point is that conspiracy buffs seem a bit off plumb, I agree. If the point is also that all the hate talk is bad for us and leads to violence, I agree.
  12. very nice day here. Crisp and cool.
  13. AC/DC Shook Me All Night Long is in my top 5 all time favorite rock tunes. As a group they fell in at 21 on my final list, just behind Van Halen.
  14. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 06:15 PM) I'm typically underwhelmed with excitement for bench signings, Tex. I'm not sure we have an accurate measure for Jones defense. BUt he's probably better than Dye, I'd bet with one hamstring he'd be better than Dye. And he may still be good at D. Otherwise it's a power bat off the bench. For 500,000. I wouldn't really care all that much except for the fact that in 2 out of the last 3 years our bench was absolutely horrid. Which was kind of my point, he is a defensive upgrade, and there aren't too many teams that can say that
  15. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 05:58 PM) what's sad about this? I'm underwhelmed by his defense at this stage in his career, at least as a defensive stud. I'm in a Junior kind of mood about this. It's kind of a middling signing. The guy we think of is not the guy that would be signing this contract. Although, it probably says the Sox are the best team he could sign with, because he isn't playing for the money.
  16. QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 05:45 PM) Jones is probably a plus defensive corner outfielder. Sadly, with our current line up, he could be a late inning defensive sub.
  17. Good thing we are getting away from sluggers and moving to stronger defense and quicker on the base-paths
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 02:23 PM) See what one Tyler Perry movie does to you?
  19. really never considered getting a flu shot until now.
  20. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) Interesting that two people think he WILL make it. Other OF's like Dale Murphy and Andre Dawson were more dominant in their times, and they keep not getting in. I said he would not, but the more I think about it, he has a veteran's pick feel to me.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 10:49 AM) My favorite history stuff was when it had a tie in to today. I would say some of the big state/little state fights, and how the protection of minority voting rights (in the less than 50% idea) is still showing up today in things like the electoral college and the filibuster today. thx, good idea
  22. QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 12:34 PM) Target has one for $60. http://weeklyad.target.com/target/default...._email_RS911250 Thank you QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 01:08 PM) The over under is one. I'll take the over . . .
