  1. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 02:00 PM) He's one of my idols. I've never cared about "character." I wish you much success and happiness surrounding yourself with people with little or no character. I especially hope when picking a future spouse you drop the whole character thing, since it is so unimportant
  2. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 01:55 PM) Our catcher of the future is a roider, god knows how many others on the current roster and more than a few have gone through our organization in recent years including a couple from the '05 team. I don't think the Sox are all that clean. I don't either, but neither do I think they have a terrible reputation or where as guilty as other teams. I believe Bonds would change the reputation for the worst. Which unlike pre-caught Clemens, no teams where really beating down the door to add him for a stretch run.
  3. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 09:25 PM) Don't you think that is a bit of an understatement? "consistent production without much risk?" I'm thinking more like HOF caliber numbers year in and year out... I was more speaking to a point why some guys earn $$ and others guys earn $$$$$$$. For the extra few $, there is usually less speculation and more consistent production. Thank you for giving me a chance to clarify. I can see how that was really unclear.
  4. With one signing the organization would go from one of the cleanest to one of the dirty ones. No thanks. I prefer Thomas' legacy of 'roid free to having the poster boy wearing a Sox uniform. Now, if Ricky thought Ricky could still lead off, let's bring Ricky out of retirement
  5. Besides Texas being bigger and better than other states . . .
  6. QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 11:42 AM) Honestly, are you questioning the man who got Jake Peavy without cleaning the farm and Alex Rios for free? How dare you! just the opposite, promoted to ????
  7. QUOTE (IamPabloOzuna @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 11:48 AM) Psst...Williams' is fine as is. I changed it, it was wrong. SS was correct before I added "sox" to the title.
  8. Oh Dear God

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 11:22 AM) Not me, but then again it has been like seven months... sorry bud.
  10. Zero chance that anyone thinks of me as a snob.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 10:55 AM) Unless we have two to three bad years, with no good years mixed in, I think he will be here for 10 years. Ozzie will be gone before Kenny. He is a much easier target. I could also see him on either coast. The path is murky, but NY or LA could come calling. Perhaps a team Pres. He doesn't strike me as someone who will be happy in the same job for 20 years.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 10:28 AM) Psst, its Kenny Williams's Thank you. However, what do you think? Will he be here in three years?
  13. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 10:23 AM) When Rush Limbaugh says "I hope Obama fails"... I completely understand what his point is. His policies have the potential to take this country down a path from which we cannot recover. So, in that sense, I agree. Then, people like bmags come along and will now say that I'm a lunatic because I want Obama to fail. Hell, I might even be a "racist" and have concocted some death threat against our President. The insinuations are junk, baseless, and pathetic. People who watch Glenn Beck must be idiots (pardon the pun) - yes, those baseless opinions that go against socialistic policies... how dare people go against George W. Bush. Oops, I mean, Barack Hussein Obama. Yes, Tex, it's interchangable, and it's all junk. I also understand his point *and* I especially understand why he carefully chooses those words in which to make his point. He doesn't say, I hope this health care plan fails. He doesn't say, I hope this new policy fails. He says I hope Obama fails. We all know he is wise enough to understand the effects and affects of his words. I believe I make the distinction between having an initiative fail to get started, like health care, versus failing once it is implemented. I understand the fail to be approved, I do not understand the broader picture failing that some take delight in. Such as bad economic news, increases in deaths in Iraq or Afghanistan, Presidential approval ratings dropping, etc. The people that point to stuff like a rising unemployment rate, bankruptcies, etc with almost glee that I don't get. If President George William W. Obama's approval rate falls, it generally is because something bad is happening in the country. Yet many cheer, and it goes beyond the lunatic fringe. And please, I am not speaking specific to anyone in this thread, just pointing out something that has bothered me for more than just the last two Presidents. The blind eye towards one party and the apologistic attitude towards the other is not, IMHO, what the 1st Amendment was meant to protect.

QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 09:53 AM) To all my fellow American Soxtalkers, I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving! To you Canadians, uh sorry, I'm a month late. To everyone else, how 'bout his Thursday, huh? . Nice thread start, however, you should be adding to the 50 Favorite Rock bands here Picking up some Thanksgiving items in Mafia Wars on FB Now get back to work! And Happy Thanksgiving y'all. Both those soxtalkers still active and those that have become quiet. I'm thinking you Queen Prawn, Staff, and Nuke . . .
  15. One caution, looking at a one or two year snap shot is not the entire picture. It could be said that some of these guys were underpaid for a couple early years on their contracts, and then are overpaid at the end. Guys will fall off towards the end of their careers, yet how many multi-year deals do we see with decreasing terms? In Paulie's case, the team is now paying back that "hometown" discount from the early part of his contract.
  16. I was just thinking, what is K-Dubs next position in baseball? With the Sox? Moving to a bigger stage? He's about at the point where his personal value is probably peaked or slightly down from a few years ago. But he has proven he can GM a team to a WS win, then keep them around the top for years after. He is doing it with a larger payroll than most, but still has a knack for pulling guys off the scrap pile. And to think not that long ago, I, and others, wanted his head.
  17. I am certain the marketing splash will be Rios and Peavey for a full season.
  18. I thnk the problem we have is also rooted in a feeling among the "out party faithfuls" who want to see the President (Bush or now Obama) fail so they can say I told you so, etc. Amazing to me in this is that they desire this even if it makes their own lot in life worse. And we could dismiss as the lunatic fringe in both parties, but I believe there are enough to make it more than just the fringe. We have turned politics into a high stakes battle of coke v. pepsi, mac v. pc, or Bears v. Packers.

    Anyone?
  20. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 06:45 AM) Right you are, Ni. . . half-way anyway (actually 1/3 right). There is one more big musician who woodshedded with Frank before starting up Little Feat, and one of slightly lesser stature. You got the game though. Please submit a questio if you care too, since your brain is now bursting with Zappa factoids. In the meantime, here's another one: Connect FZ with Journey. Aynsley Dunbar went from working with FZ to working with Journey. Frank Zappa to ELO
  21. X stalls the list again, and should not even be in the English alphabet
  22. Not me. I love old catchers and young pitchers. Long walks on South Padre Island's beaches. Can he play left?
  23. All politics is local Unemployment is as local as it gets. For 99% of Americans the only unemployment rate we care about begins and ends at our driveway. I know way too many talented people that are still actively looking. That's all I need to know. The rest is all mouse sweat and floofy dust.
  24. Generally speaking, what you are paying for is consistent production without much risk. If you can afford it, that is nice. But most teams cannot, so they look for the less expensive and hope they come through, and some will.
  25. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 07:54 PM) sorry tex, i'm not going to submit to your pity party while we still don't know who our R or LF will be. no pity party, just underwhelmed. I know who they were, and even this is an upgrade. I am hoping that we're not going to hear blah blah economics, blah blah, we're excited, opening day LFer, blah blah blah
