QUOTE (qwerty @ Oct 29, 2009 -> 10:02 AM) The japanese league strike zone is most definitely smaller. They give almost nothing inside, less outside than in the mlb, and they do not call strikes at the letters. Strikes at the letters would drastically cut down on walk rates, which is not the case. Matsuzaka was excited to come to the states to take advantage of the fact that he could work both the inside and outside edges better. I have followed japanese baseball rather closely for roughly eight years now... and for a fact their strike zone being larger compared to ours is just a myth. I have heard from people too close to the game (as in they literally attend the games) say as much to believe otherwise. My impressions are old, so I assume they have devolved much like mlb.

Greg Walker Admits Any Other Team Would Have Fired Him
Texsox replied to Marky Mark's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Oct 29, 2009 -> 09:47 AM) I think Greg Walker works his ass off and that is why he is still here. Same with Cora and Cooper. Great observation. He always seemed like someone with a strong worth ethic. But there are thousands of guys who would work their ass off for that job. That doesn't mean they are the right person for the job. And if the team is going to make a change, do it soon. I've never been a middle of the season shake up fan. -
Sox need defense for serious run in 2010

I'd be against any realistic plan that starts off trade Buehrle. That is the kind of hole digging that just never seems to accomplish anything. -

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Oct 29, 2009 -> 09:33 AM) I just don't see the team spending a lot of money this year. I hope I'm wrong! Looking at the division, I do not think it will take much dollars, the team should already be more than competitive. I imagine more than a few pundits and analysts will pick the Sox to win the division. To win the AL, that may take a couple upgrades or guys having career years at the right time. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 29, 2009 -> 09:26 AM) I gotta say, I have never heard of an exchange like that here in Indiana. Maybe not that exact exchange, but arguments on the house floor, etc.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 29, 2009 -> 09:22 AM) Oh, I see what you're saying. You're saying their strike zone is just bigger. I'm not certain. I think it was a bad call, but it was close, and he just wanted to give him the strike for the sake of drama. I am remembering when US players would play over there, the hitters were amazed at how high their strike zone was. At the time getting a call in the US over the belt was rare, there, all the way to letters on the uni was called. I do think this was staged, again, there are no fans in the seats. So either it was staged or it was in Pittsburg.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 29, 2009 -> 09:17 AM) Actually it's the opposite. They have a very precise strike zone. Ours is actually far more liberal than theirs is. Are you saying by rules or by actual calls?

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 29, 2009 -> 09:02 AM) after watching that video of the pitcher again, wtf is with that strikezone. That ball was high and outside You have to think of the strike zone in 3D. It may be high at the front of the plate, but in the zone in the back of the plate. Plus it was coming from the same angle as a lefty throwing, so it could have been coming across and in the zone. Plus Japan IIRC has always had a liberal interpretation of the strike zone What I am noting is that there are no fans in the stadium. I think this was a staged deal.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 28, 2009 -> 11:20 AM) When he first started dropping down he had the same velocity he's always had. Than he had his bought with sciatica or however you spell it and after that his velocity started to drop. It didn't have anything to do with his trying to gain movement. He just wanted to show people another arm angle on his fastball, the problem was he didn't have any other pitch in his arsenal from that arm angle and because of it hitters knew what was coming (a straight fastball). For the pitchers out there, how hard is it to throw his full repertoire from a different arm angle? I imagine control would be the issue.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 29, 2009 -> 08:46 AM) I hadn't heard that part yet, especially the part where he told Swartz to kiss his gay ass. How the hell was THAT not national news? I imagine s*** like that happens in all 50 states.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 29, 2009 -> 09:03 AM) Guys, there is about zero chance that we sign a second baseman. We are young and cheap there with two kids, plus a CJ Retheford in the wings if he wanted. With the other holes on the team, and the tight budget we are going to be looking at, it isn't going to happen. I agree 99% with you. However, young and cheap is a great trade chip, perhaps one of the best ones he's got. I've learned to never say never with K-Dubya. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 28, 2009 -> 05:52 PM) There was a very interesting quote that stuck out to me: Sounds to me like something was going on and my guess is it has to do with certain guys not listening him, not putting in the extra work, etc. I wonder who those guys are and whether I'm reading too much into this or not. Jumped out at me also. I always dislike the "secret stuff happening that makes this ok" response. Same in Washington, etc. Plus, like it or not, fair or unfair, Walker, like all coaches, is tasked with getting the most out of each unique player. The best coaches do not have a "there is only one way to do it, and that is my way" approach. They adapt and find the best path for each player. My untrained eye hasn't seen that under Walker. -

There are so many factors to a WS victory coming together. You also see a few youngsters develop and become big contributors. Those guys like Garland that have career years at exactly the right time. I'd be for giving Rios the position in 2010. He's a veteran and should have a decent to better than average season. I'm also content with leaving the left side of the infield intact and letting them grow. So it does seem the right side of the field, all the way to the wall, is ripe for defensive improvement. I just do not want to dig a hole to fill in elsewhere. -

Math and Science is the key area right now, which is why I am in ELA Have you spoken to any principals? Eventually, if you are "on your own" you will need to contact and interview with them. Start with any you have a connection with. Ask them what they would do. You just involved them in your success. Powerful help.
