Royals vs Sox...Part Trois - Sweep Edition
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 01:16 PM) Good one...or maybe just realize that until he can get hitters out in the minors again, he should be nowhere near their major league roster? Look at this s***, he'll never get anyone out with high 80 flat fastballs. No talent.

call up jitters + a defensive miscue. Let's hope he settles down. There is a lot of pressure on his shoulders.

Two Thirds of US Companies Paid NO Federal Income Taxes
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 02:23 PM) Look at Ford and GM's cost models versus Toyota and Honda. Their R&D has been non-existant because they have been saddled with the ginormus legacy costs of health care and pensions, not to mention wages that are WAY higher than their Japanese competion. Now they are stuck behind and firing tens of thousands of people as well. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 07:31 AM) I'd love to see where I said anything like that. I gave the effect of rising costs on business with very clear real world examples. I'd love to see how you gave raises and hired more people in the face of higher taxes/costs in your business though. I did not say you said it, I thought we agreed that American wages and benefits placed some industries at a serious disadvantage against rest of the world competition. I see wages and benefits dropping to stay competitive. I have thought we'd see a "coming to the middle". That wages at the very bottom would continue to rise, with minimum wage pressures, etc. and the top executives would drop as well, with the middle kind of holding dsteady, which is losing against inflation. So I asked how you saw American companies solving the too high of labor cost to be competitive issue?

Government Cameras
We have laws that split hairs all the time. So videotaping being legal in one context does not automatically mean it is legal in all. For example you can video tape people walking down the street from eye level, place the same camera hidden on the ground to get "up skirt" shots, and it is illegal. So I would believe there is ample precedent to ban cameras. I also believe there is a difference between specific locations and wide area surveillance. A well marked traffic camera or store camera is better controlled then thousands of ubiquitous camera that records everything in 10 square miles. I'd like to explore the presumption of innocence that seemingly is thrown out when you record everyone looking for crimes. I'd be more inclined to support this if it was in response to a specific crime rate in a specific area, and would need judicial review before being set up. The Google thing hits a gray area between advertising and news.

Memories of getting your ass kicked
Popeye's in Lake Geneva. A friend of mine who is really tall, bent waaaay over to read this girl's t-shirt. It said "It's not the size of the ship, but the motion of the ocean". He was pretty drunk, so it took him a long time to read it. One might assume he was also staring at her chest. He looked up at her, looked at her boyfriend, and said "small dick huh?" That's when he started getting his ass kicked. Of course we had to help him, and his buddies had to help him. I grabbed one guy and basically thought we'd pretend to be fighting, only he took this s*** for real and started throwing punches. I barely held him off when the bouncers came to royally kick our ass. So the cops released us first because we were on the losing end and would probably be smart and follow their orders to leave town. Nope, we found a hidden away bar, down the end of an alley, and drank some more. As we were leaving, and turning a corner, we bumped into our buddies. Why the hell can't they listen to the cops and leave? This time I avoided that guy and started punching a different guy. He kicked my ass also. Interestingly enough we had the same court date. This time we decided to avoid those guys. I swear the judge held back a laugh when I told him why the fight got started.

Fox News: Powell to Endorse Obama
They will have to portray him as a self seeking, flip flopping (are you a GOP or Dem?) turn coat, without loyalties.

Fox News: Powell to Endorse Obama
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 11:25 AM) If RSO picks Powell and he accepts, GAME.SET.MATCH, period. They might as well cancel the GOP convention, and I'm being serious. I agree, and I cannot think of a similar person for McCain.

Fox News: Powell to Endorse Obama
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 11:15 AM) You know, at this point, it wouldn't surprise me, but then - he said "never" because IIRC his family thinks he'd be dead... (which is pathetic about our country). I hate to say it, but Obama would be a bigger target to the same people that would make an attempt on Powell. That may factor in.

Worst Franchise
IIRC the Astros were in a World Series a couple years ago. One of my criteria would be no post season appearances in the past ten years. I'd be hard pressed to pick a League Champion as having the worst franchise.

Another player that just missed my top 20. I'm glad he made the list. He is exactly the type of player that could be a fan favorite.

Government Cameras
Balta, I'll take a stab at articulating a feeling about this. I agree that when we are outside walking around we understand we are losing some privacy. We know that other people may see us. That happens in real time and there is a decent possibility we will see them as well. We pass on a sidewalk and may or may not make eye contact. That feels different to me then cameras hidden out of the way that are recording my every movement. As I was typing this and shifting in my chair, I needed to adjust the boys. Using that example, if I was out running and had the same need, I'd look around, see no one, and make a quick adjustment, no big deal. I'd hate to think that someone was recording that and possibly playing it back later. I'm also not convinced it keeps me any safer. If they truly did, banks and conveniences stores would never be robbed. Yet they are with tellers and clerks assaulted.

I was speaking about the endorsement, NOT about Powell as a VP candidate. Obviously the startegy would be much different if Powell was on the ticket.

Whatcha Takin'
QUOTE (shipps @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 10:40 AM) When I read the thread title I thought it was going to be about prescriptions.Which could be a pretty interesting thread. Just visited my Doctor Monday, the current prescriptions: Atenolol, Amlodipine Besylate, Simvastatin, glass of red wine, 2,100 calories per day, sex 3-4 (or more) per week, and moderate exercise. I love my Doctor. Better living through modern pharaceuticals.

Fox News: Powell to Endorse Obama
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 09:45 AM) And it would be unfortunate if people tried to imply it's purely along racial lines. Powell's race would be way, way down on the list of things Obama'd benefit from if he selected him. Which is why the McCain startegy would be to dismiss all the reasons that would benefit Obama and leave the one that would not.

Fox News: Powell to Endorse Obama
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 09:46 AM) It would also be one of the few real life examples of Obama reaching out across the aisle. I could see a Reaganesque landslide with that ticket. Powell actually seems to transcend political boundaries like few others in America.

Fox News: Powell to Endorse Obama
Homerun VP pick as well. That would get my attention. Actually that would put me back into the undecided. If it happens, here are the political strategies for both candidates (not necessarily the truth): Obama, Press release and ads that the decision is based on Obama's plan to end the Iraq war, etc. McCain, Rumors, blogs, commentators, (but never from the campaign), dismiss the endorsement as based purely along racial lines and Powell being thrown out by the Bush administration.

Broadway to start Thursday (8/14)
I am blindly optimistic about this. Without names, leaving a successful bullpen guy in the bullpen and leaving a starter starting, always seems to make more sense. It only gets messy when names are attached. If we're going anywhere after the regular season ends, there has to be some lightening caught. Here's one chance. With the expansion of teams and the expansion of salaries, no team has the depth to withstand starters going down and not seeing a huge drop off. So for the top 10 or so teams that have a chance, they have to either avoid any major injuries, or have the unexpected happen. Even if every pitching prospect we drafted for the past 10 years was still in the organization, it is still a guess how they will handle the jump from AAA to MLB. Broadway
