  1. Rangers are the best at the moment, between the stockpile of prospects and the huge amount of talent on the MLB roster, it's just unbelievable how stacked they are. I think the Twins will get back into it, it'll be awhile though.
  2. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 02:42 PM) Oh, they're real about it alright. All over him right now. You're scaring me man, you're making it sound like KW is ready to overpay in a big way. And not like "oh he's just throwing in an extra prospect" but "he's all in, putting in Viciedo, Floyd, and Reed." Please please don't be the case.
  3. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 12:50 PM) People are literally preventing the kids that dont' want anything to do with this from leaving the athletic facilities. It is pathetic. It is one thing if you reach out to a player who previously showed interest or you leave a call, but to seriously stalk every football player that comes out, thats pathetic, disgusting, and slimy. I haven't seen any legitimate reports saying that, and I agree if that is happening then it's slimey, no matter the bias.
  4. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 11:06 AM) Buehrle back in four days* (please) Along with $20mm
  5. QUOTE (aboz56 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 11:02 AM) Apologize if this has already been posted, but just came across this: http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/story/_/id/...action-baseball Mark will most likely be back in some sort of capacity, whether it's a roving instructor or special assistant or whatever, he'll be back as a player or as an employee.
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 11:00 AM) The PTBNL likely falls into one of two categories: 1. 2011 draft pick not eligible for trade until August 2. The team is provided a list of prospects around some level of value, and they get to wait until end of season to choose which one. Those are the two common outcomes. In either case, it could be a good prospect the Sox will lose. But it is the #1 scenario that could be more painful, it it was a higher end draft choice. We'll find out soon. And who that PTBNL is will tell us more about the deal. As long as the PTBNL isn't, say, a top 5 pick from the 2011 draft, I'd say the Sox did pretty well with the trade. Walters and Heidenreich are not high end prospects - Walters is in the 20-30 range in the Sox system (which isn't a terribly deep one anyway), Heidenreich probably 25-35. I could see it being one of Johnson, Soptic, or Hernandez, none of which are guys that are going to kill you. Walters and Heidenreich would most likely not be in the top30 for most organizations, and that's pretty much saying they are borderline prospects and don't have much value at all.
  7. I have no problem with ANY school being there. I want those kids to have a chance to get out of that situation, and if no one goes to Illinois than I completely get that too (though I know we have 1 recruit).
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 10:42 AM) The "anything to win football games" mentality is what created Penn State. They're helping kids get out of a s***TY situation.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 10:42 AM) Again, the kids wanting to go somewhere else, is much different than camping out in the PSU parking lot. If a kid wants to stay there, they most likely are going to stay there, if none of these events had changed their mind a couple coaches won't do it. Illinois/any school recruiting there is for the kids who WANT to transfer, which I'm assuming is a vast majority of them.
  10. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 10:31 AM) Its hard to tell why Wisconsin isnt going to do it. Is it out of the kindness of their heart? Or do they not feel that there are many good upgrades so this is an easy way to get some positive press for Bielema. Just a crazy free for all right now. If they feel set, then Bielema did about the best thing possible for his program, he made/guilted every fan to hate any of the schools recruiting PSU players. It's actually quite genius.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 10:29 AM) Completely different scenario than camping out in the PSU parking lots to target kids to come play for you. Illinois is a completely different position when it comes to recruiting, they can't live off of recent performances nor name brand to recruit.
  12. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 08:27 PM) I thought I read that Cole was part of the deal. If not, my bad. MLBTR
  13. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 08:22 AM) BoSox, Yes, Astros, No. We gave up two pretty good prospects with a third, unknown PTBNL. No way anyone can evaluate this trade yet. Okay, you need to stop with messing up with prospects, because we gave up garbage spects (okay they have a pulse, but almost everyone thought they barely qualify as prospects), and yea we don't know the 3rd but I bet it isn't anything to special. I'll eat crow if it is, but we still got a ton amount of salary relief.
  14. QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 10:22 AM) Illinois roster lacks talent, there are several "free agent" football players who are extremely talented, many of these players have received as many as FIFTY scholarship offers already, many teams had coaching staffs on Penn States campus and in "the parking lot". What about that suggests that Illinois had done anything worthy of singling out compared to the rest of the schools doing the same exact thing? Just because Wisconsin and some other schools are choosing not to does not make it wrong for Illinois and countless other schools to engage in what they are doing. Same press conference: (OH WOW!) Jeremy Werner ‏@WernerConnectFM Bielema said he's not upset with other coaches that do recruit PSU players but that he did not feel comfortable doing it And that's fine for him to feel that way, but at the same time I think these players deserve a chance at another school, to finish their career with a chance for postseason play and not have to deal with all the negative media attention in the next few years.
  15. Wisky may have their scholarships set, I have no idea what their situation is like. That said, if a PSU player that is talented and fits in a spot for Wisky came to them and said he wanted to play there, would they really turn him away? Illinois most likely doesn't have that luxury where players are coming up to them to play for them, therefore we need to be more visible and welcoming to these players. And like I've said, as long as they are being professional (aka no hassling players or other coaches, we got courtesy permission to be there, etc).
  16. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 09:25 AM) If you could get him to sign an extension, that would be one thing, but for a rental with zero compensation, you have to be careful. I would definitely give up Floyd, but Reed, I don't know. I know closers are supposedly a dime a dozen, but all that guy has ever wanted to be was a closer. I think he'll be elite eventually. The elite ones are worth their weight in gold on a good team. If the Sox do trade Floyd, they are going to have some money to play with next offseason assuming they are not dropping the payroll. If it's Floyd + spects I have no issue with this trade at all, I'm pretty much over Floyd at this point and view him just as about league average at this point. Giving up 1.5 years of him for .5 of Grienke seems fair from a Sox perspective, but most likely isn't enough for Milwaukee.
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 08:57 AM) Well, in that case, I hope we don't trade one of those outfielders. Actually, I'm not sure I want to see Reed traded at all. Floyd + Reed is probably the right value, but, I don't feel real good about any of the rest of the bullpen working as a closer. This potential deal scares me, I don't want to lose any long term major league pieces for 2 mths of Grienke, and I definitely don't want to sign him to a >$20mm/yr deal.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 08:43 AM) Daryl Van Schouwen ‏@CST_soxvan Jerry Manuel on MLB: 'Detroit is team to beat, no doubt about it. Coming down stretch you need experience in that dugout, running games' 'knowing you're not going to get out-foxed, out-managed. Not to take anything great job Robin has done. But coming down stretch ... ' That experience and that steady guy (Leyland) means a lot.' Meh, I get his point, but it's not like Robin is a gimmicky type manager, his poise has been outstanding this season and I am not worried at all about the pressure getting to him down the stretch. Of course he'll make mistakes, but every manager, yes including steady Leyland, will make mistakes.
  19. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 02:54 PM) I just don't like the idea of giving up a ton without getting any long-term benefit out of the player. Agreed, and right now I just can't see a package of prospects that we can build that would beat the offers from teams like the Rangers or Braves. Which is why I think KW is going after Lee, Doc, Johnson, etc instead.
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 03:10 PM) Usually I dont care for that type of stuff, but with the sanctions that came down, most of these guys are going to want to transfer, so its open season. What is a phone call going to do? Hey O'Brien, Im going to try and recruit your best players, is that okay? Well I think it just shows a bit more class to have a courtesy call. But really, should be expected that every school is hunting these guys now. And Jason, whose to say the Illini didn't give a heads up to O'Brien? Personally, I'm glad the Illini are taking advantage of this situation, we could get some talent/depth infusion without penalties. Of course, I hope they are doing it with class and respect to the PSU players and coaches.
  21. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 01:53 PM) Gerrit Cole?? Geez, number one pick, $8MM last year. Astros waived Wandy a year ago, pulled him back when Rockies claimed him. Bucs got screwed. What're you talking about? Cole isn't in the trade... And you do realize that almost every player gets put on waivers at some point every year, you just don't typically hear about it because they are revocable waivers. I'd like to see how much cash the Pirates got, but it seemed like they didn't give up much for a pretty decent starter.
  22. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 01:39 PM) @Matt_HayesSN #ESPN says Illinois sent six coaches to #PennState. In the parking lot. I don't think Zooker would do that. As long as the Illinois coaches are doing it respectfully, as in gave Penn St coaches a heads up, and are treating the kids right, then I have absolutely no problem recruiting the hell out of PSU players.
  23. From what little I know about the prospects, looks like a decent deal for the Pirates.
  24. f***
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 24, 2012 -> 12:01 PM) Juan Pierre? Don't even joke about that!! QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 24, 2012 -> 12:01 PM) His stuff isn't the problem so much...it's the constant injuries. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 24, 2012 -> 12:01 PM) Liriano belongs in the same boat. Yup, and combined with Grienke's depression/anxiety issues I put Johnson as the best pitcher to acquire. That said, if you include price, Liriano is probably the smartest one to go after.
