Quentin sought after by BOS
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 02:58 PM) I just can't buy that. But if they really want a .675 OPS hitting corner outfielder for a playoff run, then they can be stubborn. His OPS away from Petco Park is only .030 pts higher too.

Quentin sought after by BOS
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 02:54 PM) Why do you say that. Bourn is in his prime and has put up pretty respectable leadoff numbers and plays good defense. And clearly the Sox are going to need a top of the order hitter as they don't have any that profile in the system/currently on the club. On top of that you get another good prospect or two back. Not saying it is the preferred approach but who knows if it is realistic to expect a package of Brown plus another top prospect from the Phillies. I don't like his style of play, and you'd be buying him really high right now (he's showing a ton more power this year than usual). If you can pick him up at a decent price in the offseason (afte Pierre is gone) then that'd be fine, but right now both of them in the same lineup would be killer imo.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 02:50 PM) Couldn't a 4 team deal potentially make sense. White Sox land Bourn plus prospects, Phillies land one of Pence/Quentin, Braves land the other, Astros get prospects from both teams. Ugh, that'd be an awful trade for the Sox for both the present and future.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 10:17 AM) basically, he is not leading. got it. Nobody is, it's a clusterf***. And shouldn't conservatives not want the President to lead this? A) He's a democrat B) The Senate has this power, so it would mean the President is taking on more power by doing so. So basically, he's doing what Republicans should want him doing. Staying out of most of it but endorsing deals that he thinks are best.

Danks1 also on the market?
QUOTE (Anderson Cooper's Quivering @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 08:45 AM) Didn't one of the Sox beat writers tweet yesterday that the Sox have said Danks will NOT be traded? I'll have to go check my twitter feed.... could swore I saw that somewhere. All depends on the package, just like with ANY player on the team and in the minors.

Job Hunt Thread
QUOTE (MuckFinnesota @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 10:33 PM) No decision has been made yet and I don't really want to get into the specifics of the situation. But I would primarily be helping out at training camp & doing less work in the office. If I did stay around, maybe their perceptions would think even more highly of me but it sounds like I am getting contacts and a recommendation regardless. Going that extra mile can make a huge difference. And you'd be at training camp, that's pretty cool itself.

Hyperpartisanship is threatening to destroy our country
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 02:35 PM) You explicitly mention 'conservatives' while leaving out the Democrat party in your queries as to 'why do they do this'. I was merely supplying the missing context for you. also, no, i do not think merely giving tax breaks to companies automatically creates jobs. I will direct you to the GE example again. Big tax breaks, lots of labor arbitrage. But on the other side of the coin, uncompetitive tax rates can hurt job creation. The trillion dollar question is what can be done to encourage US hiring. Because I was questioning the 'conservative' stance that keeps getting brought up here and in the media. I was curious about why people believe that the 'conservative' stance is the right one. I wasn't looking for a qualifier that the liberals are wrong so this is right. So then why do we keep hearing about how our tax rates are killing job growth? Isn't this just another argument that no one really has an answer to so we keep throwing s*** against a wall and seeing what sticks in the end?

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 02:28 PM) Cardinals acquired QB Kevin Kolb from the Eagles in exchange for CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a 2012 second-round pick. Kolb will land a five-year, $63.5 million contract with $21.5 million guaranteed to take over as Arizona's much-needed franchise QB. 3-7 as a starter. Way too much money and talent for a mediocre QB.

The GREAT Daniel Hudson
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 02:30 PM) He has shown it now. the reality is if you look at it from the day of the trades' perspective. Stewart is higher rated than Hudson was. But had been a reliever for 2-3 seasons already, so that doesn't mean he had more VALUE. For example, I wouldn't have traded Hudson for Drew Storen because Hudson is a starter and has more value than a reliever, albeit a good one.

Hyperpartisanship is threatening to destroy our country
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 02:25 PM) actually, less US workers = bigger profits. automation and labor arbitrage. the assumption that big profits will result in US hiring is wrong. by the way, you would be surprised to know that Democrats are just as sold out to corporate interests as any Republican. Take a look at Obamas 'job czar'. So you're saying less taxes =/= more jobs, interesting because that's all I hear from conservatives. And I don't know why somebody always has to bring in the other party, as if it justifies the poor thoughts of the their own party. I was only talking about conservatives, and although I'm not giving liberals the pass on this (because I do believe they've done many a thing wrong too) that doesn't mean they should get mentioned as a defense.

Hyperpartisanship is threatening to destroy our country
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 12:50 PM) Well, you would be surprised at the animosity within the tea party towards off-shoring and corporate 'traitors'. now, i'm not saying I am or am not in that group, but it's a substantial segment of the tea party. now, neo-conservatives are pretty much all in on off-shoring. they love it. but a neo-conservative is loyal to profit, not any country. Bigger profits = more jobs though, isn't that why so many conservatives are complaining about high tax rates?

Quentin sought after by BOS
QUOTE (Sockin @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 01:45 PM) @Dejan_Kovacevic Dejan Kovacevic #Pirates have inquired on #WhiteSox OF Carlos Quentin. Asking price astronomical. Sounds unlikely, to say the least. #tradedeadline Im sure the Pirates think giving up anything in their long term plans is astronomical, as it should be. They can't afford to trade in their future for one decent season. They need to build a long term winner, and they are on that path.

Quentin sought after by BOS
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 11:50 AM) Its bonerrific to think we could get a top 5 prospect for CQ, add a player or two to that and its unreal. I just can't believe we could get that package for him. I would easily put Thornton into that deal to get it done.

Quentin sought after by BOS
QUOTE (bighurt574 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 11:46 AM) If we can get a good haul for CQ I'd pull the trigger, even if we're still in "win now" mode. We can plug in Viciedo and not have a huge drop off, and still pick up some nice pieces for the future. If there is any truth to that Rios rumor (unlikely) and this trade goes down, then you're looking at an OF of De Aza, Brown, Viciedo with Pierre splitting time with De Aza. That's a huge upgrade over what we currently have and actually will most likely give us a better chance to win.

Jackson & Teahen to TOR for Frasor & Stewart (RHP)
QUOTE (WCSox @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 11:44 AM) Right, but the player still needs to listen to his employer's coaches. If things have gotten to the point where LaRussa is airing dirty laundry to the public, you have to wonder about Rasmus' character. If LaRussa is over-coaching his players, it isn't having much of a negative impact on his team. Dave Duncan's over-coaching of Jeff Weaver and Anthony Reyes worked out pretty well. Overcoaching happens in our system. And LaRussa can be a punk and a douche big time, so I'm not shocked at all that he would go to the media because he doesn't like Rasmus. Although it's not a great indicator that Rasmus is a good character, it doesn't solidify it either.

Jerry must be so proud
QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 10:47 AM) Thought this was interesting. Lesbian couple asked to remove offensive shirt at Dollywood. This seems like a complete 180 from the situation with Beckham. From first read, I side with the park on this one. They consider that shirt to be offensive to the LGBT community so they asked them to reverse the shirt. I see no problem, it shouldn't matter if they were lesbian or straight. And in terms of their offense to the statement "It's a family park," well the company is just trying to make sure that nothing offensive is coming in that may upset people. The park didn't say anything to really offend the couple, nor did they say that they didn't consider them a family. They thought that the shirt was inappropriate to wear, because they most likely interpret it or could be interpreted by people at the park as a negative statement on gay marriage.

Jackson & Teahen to TOR for Frasor & Stewart (RHP)
QUOTE (WCSox @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 11:04 AM) Yeah, when LaRussa publicly states that Rasmus doesn't listen to coaches, that tells JR all he needs to know. Actually, that would probably be a positive thing for hitters in our organization. Buddy Bell has said numberous times that they tend to overcoach kids, and it backfires big time. Players will have their own routine, and if that means they have a private hitting coach, then fine. I wouldn't get too upset over that, nor would I take it personally. That said, Rasmus will have to own up to his results if they are less than average while working with this coach, and it would be the manager's job to make sure that Rasmus has every resource he needs, but not to blast him in the media for getting outside help.

The GREAT Daniel Hudson
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 10:47 AM) Stewart was higher rated than Hudson at the same point of their careers. Hudson had better numbers and had shown he can succeed in the bigs (limited time in 2009, and flashed his stuff in 2010). Stewart was a reliever for a few years before being converted, and hasn't really seen great success. So yes, some people rated Stewart higher, but Hudson easily could have much great value and I'm almost positive he did/does.
