QUOTE(shoota @ Jan 18, 2007 -> 10:28 PM) My boss told me a story about his youth, how drinking 3-5 raw eggs a day for 5 days will give you a huge load. So I thought I'd surprise the girlfriend this weekend. You are serious right? Because if you are, that is probably the quote of the year.

I used to find Will Ferrell funny. It just all seems a bit recycled at this point.

Are we really out of contention this coming season?

QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jan 18, 2007 -> 05:01 PM) i think, as of right now, it will be extremely difficult for this team to make the playoff. He completely downgraded our pitching staff, Thome is a year old, Pods is coming off an down year, Dye and Crede are only one 1 year deals, Urbie is a huge question mark and Brian Anderson still can't hit. out of contention? Sad but true. KW gets an F for this offseason. The bullpen cost the Sox multiple games down the stretch, and Podsednik, Anderson, and Uribe were horrible last year. However, those previously mentioned 3 should (read: SHOULD ) improve offensively due to progression to of the mean (simply stating that they will perform closer to their career averages). In the same line of thought process, Thome, Dye, and Crede will all regress. The starters should improve, and the bullpen could be amazing this year (or the backend could be complete garbage again). I am not sure how Dye being in the last year of his contract really hurts the Sox in '07, but whatever. And Crede isn't in the last year of his deal. He's under the Sox control until after the 2008 season. I believe Kalapse has preached that to death. Also, Gavin Floyd hates you too. -
QUOTE(05 Sox R1 @ Jan 18, 2007 -> 04:53 PM) I like the deal. McCarthy would have gotten lit up too much in Coors Field East (Comiskey). It's actually a pretty neutral park - it's just a great park for home runs. Very small field = not many XBHs. There is a strong possibility he will get lit up in Texas. He should be a pretty solid pitcher regardless...very likely around league average. I like BMac, but he's going to be inconsistent as a starter. If his change and curve aren't working, he's going to get destroyed. If they are, the opposition pretty much stands no chance unless he leaves something up. As Balta pointed out, he has a great change when it's working, and his curveball just falls off the table. He has a tendency to leave pitches up, which is by far his biggest problem. From everything I've heard of Danks, he's very similar to Gio. And Masset sounds quite similar to Jenks without the pins in his elbow.

The Cubs get a taste of Zambrao's upcoming salary demands
witesoxfan replied to Kyyle23's topic in The Diamond Club
Dude, not everything is as cut and dry as the stats point it out. It's of my opinion that if Zambrano cut his walks by about 1.5 per 9 that he'd probably be the best pitcher in the game. It's possible that might mean he leaves more pitches over the middle of the plate, and thus starts allowing more homers, which in turn increases his ERA and his losses, thus making him a worse pitcher. It's entirely possible, but I don't think it would happen. -

Just gonna say that Zambrano would probably be the best pitcher in the game if he could get his BB/9 down to about 3 instead of 4.5. -
QUOTE(Vance Law @ Jan 18, 2007 -> 12:48 PM) Geez, who the heck did Detroit beat last year? The didn't beat the AL East, they didn't beat us. Apparently they beat everyone else. KC - 14-4 MIN - 11-8 CLE - 13-6 NL - 15-3 That would be over half of their wins.

QUOTE(shoota @ Jan 17, 2007 -> 11:48 PM) Very interesting, I had no idea. I forget the statistical analysis, but some believe Zambrano is likely to suffer injury in 2007 because of his 2006 season's walk rates. The theory has something to do with Z's increased 2006 walks compared to previous seasons, and how a sudden increase in walks is a precursor to injury. Funny, I've heard the same thing about Oswalt. Not because of walk totals, but because of stature and his diminishing K/9. Guys who are 6'0 170 and constantly throw it in the 92-96 range aren't likely to have clean bills of health, whereas guys who are 6'5 and 250 (and in shape...not like fatass Colon) tend to be able to throw it a little harder and last a little longer. Hell, maybe both end up screwing up their arms. It's not like it's completely out of the realm of possibility. -

QUOTE(BainesHOF @ Jan 18, 2007 -> 12:21 AM) It's been amusing to see a certain segment of fans annoint Anderson as a Gold Glover. Do they watch all the games? (Newsflash - a center fielder should be good defensively.) Sure, he's above average, but he suffered too many mental lapses in the field and he had trouble going back on the ball. Overall, his range is very good, but his arm is so so, and certainly doesn't scare anyone, especially when he throws to the wrong base so often. Newsflash - rookies make mistakes. You're treating him like he's a veteran. I don't know who's been annointing him as a gold glover, but he sure as hell is above average and very well could be a gold glover if he can ever hit for a decent enough average (and I think he will at some point, because I've constantly compared him to Torii Hunter, and I still see that as a valid comparison, even if he is slightly worse both offensively and defensively than Hunter in his prime years). He had about as much range as Rowand last year, and perhaps/probably more. As a 9 hitter, I'll take him and give him another year. (and it's still within the realm of possibility that he could act as a 4th OFer, which is something I'm also in favor of. The only thing I am not in favor of is trading him in a one for one deal). -

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jan 17, 2007 -> 08:59 PM) I don't think it's that clear that our offense is the best in the division. Cleveland outscored us last year despite playing in a much worse park to hit. They added a solid top-of-the-order guy in David Delluci, too. That's not to say our offense won't score more than they will this year (although I'd bet against it), but in no way can you make a clear 'our O is the best in the division' statement. Cleveland's offense is going to be ridiculously good next year. Over/under Keith: 875 runs -

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jan 17, 2007 -> 07:32 PM) Indians: Jason Stark Perter Gammons Jerry Crasnick Eric Karabell Eric Neel Gary Gillette Mark Simon White Sox: Buster Olney Tim Kurkjian, Steve Phillips Jim Caple Pedro Gomez Phil Rogers Bob Klapisch, Alan Schwarz John Shea Sean McAdam Jim Callis Twins: Rob Neyer Mainly White Sox anyways. 95% was just an exaggeration anyways. -
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 17, 2007 -> 06:41 PM) Is Todd Jones still going to be closing in Detroit? With any luck, the White Sox might be able to say the same thing too, and that won't be because of Bobby's performance, but because of how good the other guys in the Pen can be. S***, good call. Jones is so bad. I would imagine Zumaya has to be wondering when the hell Jones is getting out of there.

QUOTE(innersanctum @ Jan 17, 2007 -> 07:18 PM) Yeah, remember, Cleveland was picked to win the Central Division last year. I seem to recall about 95% of writers predicting the Sox to win the Central. -
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jan 17, 2007 -> 05:12 PM) Sosa-Gonzo-Wickman gives the Braves a really nice backend. You mean Soriano, but yes it does. Probably the only team that has two people setting up who would both be better closers than the current closer.

QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ Jan 17, 2007 -> 05:20 PM) Didn't think what consequences he'd get when he gave out asinine contracts this offseason. Good for him. Consequences? New ownership will fire him anyways, there are no consequences. That's why the Tribune doesn't care that he is spending all that money. -
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jan 17, 2007 -> 03:21 PM) It is classless and wrong and something I would never do. Why would you even consider bringing the LT crying or the camera man pushing, when anybody in the right state of mind would agree with you that having an affair is wrong. It's classless and wrong, infact I hated all that stuff, it's the LT pissing and moaning that I've defended him for. As far as I can tell, LdT was only referring to the Patriots players acting like douchebags, and then he said maybe they get it from their coach. It's not completely out of the realm of possibility. Also, in my mind, the difference between the Bears doing the fade-away jump dance of the Giants, and the Patriots doing the lights out dance of Merriman is that the Bears did it in the regular season, whereas the Pats did it in the playoffs. It's that simple. There's a line in Major League about not celebrating in front of someone who has died and gone back down to the minors. I think that fits extremely well in this situation, except instead of going to the minors, they get to sit on their couches. The Giants had another game the next week. Mocking celebrations in all regards are disrespectful, but sportsmanship has to be shown in the playoffs, moreso than in the regular season. I'd have to believe that's why it's pissing so many people off.

QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 17, 2007 -> 02:58 PM) I don't think we'll dominate, but I'm not sure how you can accept the position that considering everything negative from last year kept us 6 games out wouldn't be a positive going into this season. Besides the Sheffield move (assuming it was a good move...i'm still not sold) no one did anything in the offseason. The two teams that beat us overachieved and we played like crap most of the year. This would indicate to me that we have an excellent shot of winning the division. Cleveland added a bullpen. It won't be great, but it won't be nearly as bad as it was last year. Sheffield will be a good hitter until his wrists fall off. He'll probably lose much of his power in the next 2-3 years, but I'd be very, very surprised if he didn't hit .290 with about a .875 OPS next year. Minnesota's always scary, even without Liriano. They still have Santana. That's the key. -

QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 17, 2007 -> 02:52 PM) So wait. Lets see, Bonderman gets better and better each year and projecting that he'll have a slight falling off is moronic because all indications of his stats point to him having a better year than last year (which doesn't really work in baseball after a few years in the majors, but anyway...) Yet Crede getting better and better each year is a fluke and we got lucky he played so well? It's harder to project Crede, due to his back problems and below average plate discipline. However, he's likely to put up a year similar to last year. -
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jan 17, 2007 -> 02:15 PM) How is he an asshole? Again, people say he's this and say he's that but provide no information to clarify how or why they think what they think. Pretty sure this was posted already, but... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Belichick#Criticisms
