QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 23, 2006 -> 10:44 PM) Compared to some of the other contracts we're seeing, it's really not that awful. We have such a glaring hole in LF/leadoff, I don't think it's too much of a risk. agreed 100% If he gets hurt, like he's been prone to doing, Owens/Sweeney are waiting in the minors and will be more than suitable as stopgaps. Podsednik is likely to make somewhere around $3-4 mill this year. For this year, is an upgrade defensively, on the basepaths, and likely at the plate worth $1 mill more to go along with a DL stint?

Still don't think there's a shot in hell, and I won't even consider it possible until the arbitration hearings pass.

QUOTE(beautox @ Nov 22, 2006 -> 08:50 PM) Carl Everett says hi, twice. Carl Everett's just a dumbass. Outside of Boston, what did he ever do at any point that said he had questionable character (ala drug or alcohol abuse, marital and/or other assault charges, or symptoms of insanity)? He doesn't believe in dinosaurs and he has issues with homosexuals, neither of which will ever effect his play on a diamond, unlike aforementioned character issues.

QUOTE(3 BeWareTheNewSox 5 @ Nov 22, 2006 -> 02:57 AM) Guess he better not pilot a plane anytime soon Too many choices of douchebags, but I probably would've given it to Ortiz, he's a beast, but it depends on what you go by to vote. Of course, the DH and team record part would hurt him, but I don't interpret it as all this 'most valuable to a winning team blah blah blah', I see it as best stats . So why hate on Pronk? Ortiz - .287 54(12.7 HR/PA) 137 .413/.636/1.049 in 686 PAs Hafner - .308 42(13.4 HR/PA) 117 .439/.659/1.097 in 563 PAs Actually, that's based on offense and popularity. Jeter's been one of the worst defensive SS's for a while, yet he's won 3 straight gold gloves. I wonder why...?

QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 12:57 PM) Yet you have no problem with trading an established starter for a minor leaguer who had a 4.6 ERA and projects as a career minor leaguer to anyone with a clue... HAHA! To be able to tell if anyone has a clue, you first have to have a clue.

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 07:11 PM) Zito and MB have very little chance at realistically getting 300 wins. 20 wins per season for 10 more years? They have already played some of their peak years and were not getting 20 wins. Or 17 wins per over the next 12 for Buehrle. Or 14.5 wins per over the next 14. It's possible. Not likely at all, but possible all the same. Zito's looking at 18 a year till he's 40, or 15.2 till he's 42. If either one of them have 3 years at any point within the next 12 where they win anywhere from 22-25 games in a season, they are in the clear to tank for a year. Also, there's not much really stopping either one of them from pitching until they're about 44. If they want 300 badly enough, and they stay healthy enough, they can probably get there.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 04:51 PM) I love AJ Pierzynski. I think he's the heart and soul of this team. At least, he'll always be the first position player I think of when I think of 2005 and beyond. No way I could think of just one. Just couldn't do it. When I think of 2005, I don't think of any particular person; I think of the team. (it's homerish, but it's true...atleast as far as I'm concerned)

QUOTE(VAfan @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 03:44 PM) Well, take ERA or WHIP. Freddy's ERA was basically the same as Garland's, and his WHIP was basically the same as Jose's. I know it is fashionable to badmouth Garcia on this site. I think it is a mistake. Garcia is a far better pitcher than Javier Vazquez has ever been, or will ever be. Going forward, I think that will remain true. Garcia is a money pitcher who has been able to suck it up and win big games, and I don't think his arm is finished. Vazquez was the mistake for this team. All promise; no performance. It really undermined the team. I'd take Chris Young alone in trade for him if Arizona would do it. Of course they won't. If the Mets would take him for Milledge, I'd do it. Undermined the team...LOL, are you serious? F*** blaming Buehrle who had an ERA north of the Navarro line in the second half F*** blaming Garcia's 3 months of ERA north of 5.50 F*** blaming Contreras's injury for the rotation's end over end free-fall(which, looking back, was probably more important than any person has considered) Last time I checked, the team was playing about .666 ball in the first half...all with Javy Vazquez blowing ass for a month and a half. Maybe the Sox tanked like a college student because because the offense went down the s***ter, the bullpen was mediocre as hell, and the rotation was bad. Undermined the team...if ANYTHING undermined the team, it was Ozzie Guillen's persistence to constantly mismanage the club, never putting them in the best position to win. How are you going to score with a .300 OBP at the top of the order? How is he going to get into scoring position when he steals at a 66% clip? How are the pitcher's supposed to excel when you have a little leaguer (defensively) in CF half the time? If you can figure those out without going Ozzie on me and telling me that hemakesdafookinglineup, then you can further explain to me how Javy undermined the team. Until then, I ain't listening.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 10:20 AM) I'd be happy with either... I would too, but I don't think Heilman makes much sense for the Sox. Pretty much a two-pitch pitcher, so while he's a solid reliever, he's not much of a starter. Humber, though injury prone, is a pretty solid SP spec from what I can gather. Not at the elite level like a Pelfrey, Prior, Liriano, but pretty much the notch below that.

Yay for Jeter not winning it. The only way this could be better would have been if Thomas had won it, but meh.

QUOTE(VAfan @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 10:24 AM) Last season, KW made "one trade too many." It was the Vazquez trade. He had always coveted Vazquez, and thought under Coop that we could rekindle his potential. The problem was the guy was a mental midget who consistently melted down in the 6th inning game after game after game. (Do you realize the last game he won on the year was against the Yankees when Ozzie, for the only time all year, pulled him after 5?) So what did you call Jose Contreras in 2004?

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 09:52 AM) Lastings+Pelfrey for Garcia. wishful thinking Heilman/Humber + Lastings is more realistic, and even that isn't necessarily going to happen

I'm honestly not sure how much more unnecessary slurping I can handle. O RLY?! Barry Zito, 29 - 102 wins Mark Buehrle, 28 - 97 wins They're both looking at a crapshoot.

QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 12:15 AM) I have to say, I'm shocked to see rumors saying that all Javier Vazquez can bring in return is Nick Masset...a minor league reliever. The way I read it, it sounded like Texas thought Danks for JV one for one was overpaying. If that's really the market for Sox starters, I wouldn't blame KW for sticking McCarthy in AAA and waiting instead of picking up a minor league reliever right now. No, that's just because Jon Daniels won't make a trade unless it's highway robbery, save the 6-player trade with San Diego.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 20, 2006 -> 06:33 PM) Our Future might look better, but 06 might be a long year with Furcal Gooch Thome Kong Crede Lastings Sweeney Anderson Mark Count Garland Javy Mac I suppose you could get away with Stewart in LF, but Dye makes too big of an impact in the lineup, even if he does regress a bit. '07 would be even longer And yes, I agree completely with you. Kenny said he wanted to tweak the team. By tweak, he meant trade about 4 players, sooo... But, he didn't say he wanted to blow the f***ing thing up, which is what trading Dye would be.

The Dodgers are adding James Loney's bat in RF. He's a 1Bman by nature, but he can definitely handle RF, which was the point of resigning Nomar. The only way I can see them shipping Uribe to the Sox is in a potential deal for a starting pitcher. We'll pretty much just have to see about that.
-
If the conversation doesn't begin with Danks and Masset, Kenny Williams could stop the talks all together.

QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Nov 20, 2006 -> 04:31 PM) I have said for months now, keep the Five Alive. I don't see why we need to rebuild just because we didn't have 2005 all over again. On paper we were BETTER than 2005 going into '06, but as it turned out our starters had some bad years. I don't expect that to be the case next year. Just a hunch. I think there were some injuries and some fatigue but I'd pretty much keep the team intact except get a decent leadoff hitter and have a solution for Brian Anderson, should his hitting not improve. But I'm fine with standing pat with the starting five. It's not going to happen, because it doesn't make sense either baseball/value wise or financially. The Sox have 6 starting pitchers, so one can become available, and seeing the holes the Sox have to fill, as well as the value of a moderately priced starting pitcher on today's market, and you have to figure KW could make a killing. Add to the fact that the Sox currently have about $95-100 mill tied up amongst 13-15 players, and they have many players to resign within the next 2-3 years, and trading a SP now makes too much sense not to do. (and it's not like the 2005 White Sox starting rotation didn't overachieve. All 4 of the White Sox playoff starters pitched below their career ERAs. In 2006, Contreras pitched below his career ERA, and Garland was right around his, while all the others were well over. To me, it seems that 2005 is the outlier, not 2006, which is why a change is quite necessary)

QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Nov 20, 2006 -> 01:11 PM) Don't know why LA brought Nomar back when they have Loney who can stay healthy, wouldn't be that much of a downgrade, and makes the league minimum. Loney's playing RF They kinda, you know, lost JD Drew

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Nov 20, 2006 -> 01:58 AM) He doesn't get on base more, hit for a better average, or hit (regularly) with more power. He strikes out a ton and despises walks. What a prize... He has a tendency to not play defense too

QUOTE(sircaffey @ Nov 19, 2006 -> 11:38 PM) In the long-run yeah, for sure. But if you can get more for those same guys at the time of the trade, then just because they dont pan out doesnt make it a good value trade. So you're telling me you'd rather have 3 prospects not pan out than have 1 prospect pan out? Value trades mean nothing if you get nothing from them. Sure, the Ritchie trade was great for the Pirates way back when, but what the hell did they get out of it? 4 years of mediocrity out of Kip Wells, 2 years of mediocrity out of Josh Fogg, and like 2 months of s***tiness from Sean Lowe. How does that help them in the long run? The only thing that matters is the end result, and I don't think there's really any need to debate that. However, there are cases where you almost have to make the value trade, because the value of it all greatly outweighs what you'd get in return, and you can shortly thereafter send the value away for something that will help with a return. If the Sox were offered 5 top prospects for Freddy Garcia from the Devil Rays, and were offered David Dejesus by the Royals, you pretty much HAVE to make the deal with the DRays, and there's no real way around it. The Sox can then turn and deal those prospects for other parts, and fill their holes that much easier.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 19, 2006 -> 11:38 PM) Of course I was saying this 2 and 3 years ago when everyone around seemed to slam him and think so lowly of him. I never understood why either cause the guy can flat out rake. My only beefs with Soriano are his defense and his inability to draw a walk. It just leads to inconsistency on offense, and there's no guarantee if you'll get a .270 25/25 .330/.500/.820 or .290 40/40 .340/.560/.900.
