Why are people gushing over a 4.50 ERA? I don't understand it. The ONLY thing Garland did was pitch well during a stretch where our pitching was pretty much all-around horrible.
-
QUOTE(shoota @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 09:40 PM) Jon Garland is currently the Sox's best pitcher. He should be untouchable since he will be needed to meet the team's objective of winning the World Series. Perhaps I have a severly selfish outlook, but I hate trades in which quality players depart. KW needs to acquire phenomenal players without giving up anything of value. I only approve lopsided trades favoring the Sox, trading for players with a poor history who immediately turn into All-Stars once on the Sox, drafting MVPs and free agent signings. I frown on mistakes, so perfection is desired. You should really start rooting for the Yankees

QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 09:36 PM) The Sox may not like having someone other than Uribe at short, but they're willing to take a shot at it. 4 out of 10

QUOTE(Felix @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 09:08 PM) I simply have trouble believing the payroll will be as high as $120 million. I think a payroll similar to that of last year (or somewhere like $110) is more realistic. The Sox will still have $15 mill to play around with after the trades of SP and Uribe are made then.
-
QUOTE(Felix @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 08:53 PM) Basically yea. I thought it was pretty obvious we'd go after Alex Gonzalez this offseason, although that suggested contract seems a bit too high considering the financial restraints the Sox should have. Financial restraints...? The payroll is rougly at $105 mill right now. Take out a starter, and it's at around $95 mill. Take out Uribe, and it's $90. If soxtalk estimations are correct, and the payroll will be about $115-120 mill, the Sox would still have $20-25 mill to mess around with after signing Gonzalez.

QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 08:56 PM) ...who has actually had some major league success. And Cotts is a lefty. And you give Aardsma 4 years in the league, and I bet he has one good season too.
-
QUOTE(sircaffey @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 08:42 PM) Just thinking of possible suitors for Uribe...I think Cinci would be a good fit. Uribe for Bray? You don't trade GG defensive SS's for relievers.
-
QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 08:45 PM) Spin, spin, spin. Alibi, alibi, alibi. Take out all of his bad games and his stats suddenly look great! You should just take all his good games and show us how bad he REALLY was.
-
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 08:21 PM) I'd imagine the White Sox speculation is just that, speculation. Ozzie Guillen has come out and said that Alex Gonzalez is the best short stop in the game, dating back to his days in Florida. I'd imagine the author of that post on Rotoworld remembered Ozzie saying that and considered them as one of the potential suitors. Nah, it was someone from Boston.com that suggested the White Sox could be one of the bidders. Not sure how good their source is though.

QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 08:38 PM) Granted, the statistical evidence on Aardsma isn't voluminous, but what there has been isn't very impressive. Nor is his one good, but not great pitch. And I don't think Cotts is a world beater, but he's a lefty who has managed one great season in his brief major league career. That is one more than Aardsma. He's also had like, oh, 3 more years to have great years at the majors compared to Aardsma.
-
QUOTE(TLAK @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 08:22 PM) If I remember right when he came up he already had fastball, curve, slider and change up. The problem was those last 3 were all the same pitch.

QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 08:26 PM) You're welcome. So, you'd rather evaluate a pitcher based on amateur scouting, rather than what he's actually done on the field? Actual performance tells you more than mercurial BS like what someone once said about his stuff and "makeup". "Makeup" is one of the most meaningless words used on this board. Actual performace tells me Aardsma is better, FWIW. I was merely looking at the fact that Aardsma also has other talent that will allow him to remain successful as a reliever in the MLB - a 95-98 MPH fastball - with just tweaks to mechanics necessary to maintain that success, whereas Cotts is hit or miss with absolutely no middle ground to whether he'll be successful or not. Usually, pitchers with straight 91 MPH fastballs get hit pretty hard.
-
QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 08:06 PM) Long story short: We gave up Cotts for a pitcher who is worse than Riske and a nothing prospect. Cotts is not a great pitcher but in his short major league career, he at least has one excellent season. This trade was pretty much a give away. thanks for looking at things objectively and basing Aardsma's record as a reliever based off of numbers from his first full year in the league, rather than his stuff and makeup as a pitcher

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 02:42 PM) Wite, how do you expect Rocco to put up a .320 BA when he has a career OBP of .329? So he can't hit well because he doesn't get on base at a great clip? Is that what you're trying to suggest? You don't have to have a good eye to be a good hitter. And it's not like he's old. He's played 3 years while also missing 1 due to injury, and he'll be all of 25 next year. People are declaring Carl Crawford a god among children, yet fail to see how good Baldelli's numbers actually are, and how much time he still has left to develop as a hitter.
-
I'll say this, you can't turn down Hurley, Danks, and Arias for any of our starters, period. It would suck to have to give up Garland, but if Daniels is willing to give up those 3, whatever, let it be.

QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 07:05 PM) Not on Ozzie's team. ?????? Ozzie always goes by matchups like that, even in the dumbest of spots. Cotts vs Morneau...?
-
QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 05:23 PM) Jon had like a 2 and a half month stretch in which he was simply dominant. Freddy wasn't able to string any kind of consistency together until September. Matter of fact, none of our starters were able to string a run of success for as long as Jon did when he was on. That's just my opinion. Like I said, saying anybody was our "best" starter last year isn't saying a whole lot. It's like trying to figure out who's the most disgusting outta Oprah, Rosie O'Donell, Sigourney Weaver, Glenn Close and Kurt Warner's wife. Rosie O'Donell wins in a landslide

QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 03:07 AM) Baldelli isn't worth any decent young pitcher. He has a decently large sized contract, a spotty injury history and no stats to show of any decent amount since his rookie year. Only guaranteed $3 mill in 2007 and 2008, to go along with an option for 2009(which almost has to be picked up, seeing as how the buyout is $4 mill opposed to the $6 mill it would take to keep him)...? .302 16 .339/.533/.871...? He'd definitely be worth McCarthy in my book if the Sox could afford to deal McCarthy - which they can't, of course.
-
I'd pretty much love the hell out of him, especially if he could stay healthy. He's probably a .320 25/25 .925 type player if he can play a full year. I'm just not sure he fits the Sox needs, or rather, Ozzie's wants.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 02:39 AM) Just because I love comparisons so much; Post ASB BA - .257/.301/.393 Rowand for all of 2006 - .262/.321/.425 People will point to Anderson's year long splits, and fail to realize that he was a rookie last year, playing a better defensive CF than Rowand while also putting up similar stats once getting adjusted and somewhat comfortable. Any proposal where Rowand is a White Sox is a bad proposal.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 02:12 AM) Comparing him to the 2005 Damaso we knew and loved? He was arguably better against lefties. The 2005 Marte had a 1.7 whip with a .267 baa, 2006 Romero had a 1.2 whip with a .202 baa. And because he was so craptacular overall, he should come cheap. Noone's saying he would solidify the bullpen, but if you're looking for a loogy (like Walker), I don't think he's a bad option. Ehh, I was comparing 2006 Marte to 2006 Romero. I want no part of 2005 Marte ever, ever, ever, ever, ever again, ever. I'd take Romero as a NRI or at around $1 mill, so long as he is almost exclusively used as a LOOGY.

"20 general managers, assistant GMs, and assorted scouts and personnel people" So what's stopping them from taking 10 from the Yankees and 10 from the Red Sox? I don't trust the integrity of ESPN, and never will.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 12:35 AM) From Rosey at Foxsports... Gotta cost atleast Pelfreyto get Vazquez I'd have to imagine, just cuz both KW and Omar have man crushes on him. -
QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 11:49 PM) Oh s***, JC Romero AKA Damaso Marte... Well maybe not that bad, but comparable. How bout worse? As in, way friggin worse? I was going to post the stats, but you can look for yourself. I'm not sure there's a statistic that Romero was better in at all. Seriously.

I'm just curious as to why everyone is in such a hurry to get rid of Anderson after his first year in the league when Mr. Twins Torii Hunter put up a .689 OPS his first full year in the majors while hitting all of 9 homers. p-a-t-i-e-n-c-e
