QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 08:34 PM) his agent wanted him to make more money. His agent is the Scott Boras of football. His agent was behind the hold out in camp. Which is exactly why Willis McGahee is acting like a circus clown, doing the stupidest s*** on earth :rolly Rosenhaus represents more than just TO...just in case you were wondering. QUOTE(GoRowand33 @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 08:26 PM) I could be wrong here, but my reasoning is if the guy gets kicked off a team once, it won't happen again He wanted out of San Fran, and got out...even after his agent f***ed the papers up and he had to be traded out. He didn't want to play in Baltimore, so he got retraded. He thought Donovan sucked even though Donovan is playing through a hella injury right now, so he basically punched his own ticket out of Philly. I count 3 times he was removed from teams. That's not enough evidence for you? The guy is a worse cancer than Moss. I don't want him anywhere near any team I'm running right now, period. -

QUOTE(Spiff @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 11:08 AM) Explain to me what a system QB is. A guy who is successful more because of the offensive scheme his team runs, and less because of pure physical talent. Jeff Garcia was a winning QB in San Francisco under Steve Mariucci. In Cleveland, he was awful. The difference between the two was the offensive schemes. He's been mediocre this year I'd assume simply due to age. If you're willing to call Tom Brady a great QB because he makes smart throws, is accurate, is clutch, and is a good leader on the field, you have to ready to call Ben Roethlisberger a great QB too. Oh, and you still haven't answered whether or not you believe Brady would be successful in any other spot. I'm sure he would be...but I don't think he would be nearly as successful in many spots. I do not feel the same about Peyton Manning. -

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 05:05 PM) I understand Coors field and all, but why in the hell is Todd Helton not winning (assuming were looking at this from the perspective that money is no object). I think part of it is that you cannot neutralize money in these deals. Thome's going to be more attractive than anybody else, because he's either going to come relatively cheaply money wise, but somewhat expensive personell wise, or vice versa. He's also the biggest risk on board. I don't think Colorado's even looking to move Helton, and even if they were, they'd be asking for the moon while taking on very little money - IIRC, they've basically come out and said this. Add to the fact that Helton has a complete no-trade clause, and again, if I remember right, will veto any trade that involves him. That makes him very, very unattractive overall...even if he does have ridiculous numbers(his worst year ever is like a .950 OPS...I can't remember if that was this year or last, but that's remarkable, I don't care how much you like or don't like stats) Also YAS...about that Konerko declining after 3 years...that's just my honest feelings...nothing much more than that. I think his hip condition will play a large role in it. Not saying it will...just saying it's risky is all. -

QUOTE(Spiff @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 10:16 AM) Way to absolutely contradict yourself. He's smart, makes good throws, is a great leader, comes through in the clutch...BUT HE WOULD NEVER SUCCEED ANYWHERE ELSE. What do you think being a good quarterback is, throwing 70 times a game and having a cannon for an arm? That's really worked out for Brett Favre lately, eh? In the words of Herman Edwards, you play to win the games. The QB's job is to make sure that his team wins games. Brady does what he needs to do. So how much of that is a benefactor of being in a good system? You're gonna have a hell of a time convincing me that he'd do just as well in Buffalo or Detroit or Atlanta, or multiple other teams. I'm not saying he isn't good...I'm saying he's overrated due to being a system QB. -

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 03:46 AM) Oh yeah, weren't the boards a fun place the day after that. I still think that was a f***ing bush play to the day. I got so pissed when Thriller didnt drill Hunter right in the f***in back after that. Meh, so be it. Sox won this year, Twins didn't. I'm cool.

I heard about a class B or C game up here about 20 years ago that ended 4-2. Note, that is a basketball score. -

Depending upon cost, contracts, and age, it really becomes a tough decision. All things neutral...I take Delgado in a second. But all things aren't neutral - a Delgado trade is gonna involve a couple solid arms heading Florida's way, along with perhaps Rowand/Anderson. Is that worth Delgado alone? Giles is probably my second choice, but is also probably the most unlikely. Signing Giles would be a huge risk though, in that either he or Dye has to play 1B, and there is no guarantee that either are going to be successful there. Thome is anywhere from low-very high, low-very high reward. So much of it depends upon how much Philly is asking and how much they are willing to take on. He's either gonna make some GM look really good, or really, really bad. Helton I like, but he has a no-trade clause, and he wants to stay on Colorado. I see no way a trade works out there. Konerko, if that's who the last one is, is another in the air. If he truly wants like 5-70 or 6-72, and he can get it, he f***in gawn. I am not sure I see Konerko being successful after year 3 of any deal, so having him around for 6 years kills. If he is willing to go more in the neighborhood of say 4-60, I'm not sure how the Sox can say no. It's a hell of a lot of money, but it's a hell of a lot safer than stretching the deal out over 5-6 years. At this point...I have no idea. I'd probably prefer Delgado, depending upon what Florida's asking. Other than that, I'm looking Konerko than Thome. -
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 08:39 AM) Something like that probably seems the best option, or he'll get something around the 3-4M I'd say. My thoughts on Thomas put simply are this. History shows, he doesn't put up good numbers coming back from a major injury. He's almost at the end of his career, we shouldn't be relying on him sorely to be our DH. We need another good option in there. Thomas missed about the last month of the season of 1999 due to an ankle injury I believe. He was the runner up for the MVP the following year. This past season, he hit 12 homers in about the span of a month, while still putting up a very good OPS of .905 or so. Hell, in his worst season to date, 2002, following his year off due to his triceps injury, he still hit 28 homers, still put up 92 RBI, and still put up an .834 OPS. And that's his worst season.

QUOTE(ptatc @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 05:06 PM) The problem I have with this is that Giles has (ahem) shunk over the past two years and I don't see thepower returning. The average and OBP will be there if that's what you are looking for. But if Paulie leaves we need a little power. I still personally see Giles as a .300 30 100 .900 type player as soon as he gets out of the hell hole of a hitters park that is Petco. I think that had a lot to do with his power being down. The guy had a 1.000 OPS on the road in a division with extreme parks(Petco, Pac Bell(or whatever its called nowadays), and Dodger stadium are all extreme pitchers parks, where as BOB and Coors, especially Coors, are very good hitters parks). I see no reason why Giles can't return to a 25-30 homer form, perhaps more.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 05:24 PM) Good move. He's not a great catcher, but he's a great bench player. Had some timely hits over the course of the year and worked really well with the pitchers (seemed to really get along with the players too). In fact, I expect him to get the bulk of the starts when McCarthy's on the mound next year because they have a comfort zone out there. Plays a mean 3B too. HAVE TO LOVE HIM.

QUOTE(bighurt2719 @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 07:41 AM) money says you wanted to trade crede for vinny castilla midway through this last season. number crunch that! You owe me money. I hate Vinny Castilla, and I think he's one of the most overrated players in the majors. I figured at the very least, Castilla may outproduce Crede at about 10 times the cost...not worth trading for him. QUOTE(The Critic @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 10:03 AM) It turned out okay, but you can't keep losing power threats without it catching up to you. Losing Ordonez, Lee, Konerko, Everett, maybe Thomas, hell, let's throw Valentin in there for fun - that's a LOT of pop to lose and only replace with 31 HR from JD and 18 from AJ. If PK signs elsewhere, it is vital for the Sox to get some power from somewhere, anywhere. Small ball doesn't play well without some sort of power sources, and please forgive me if I don't think Iguchi is the answer in the 3 or 4 slot. I figure, worst case scenario, the players the Sox bring back put up the same numbers they did this year...Rowand about 15 homers, Iguchi about 15 homers, Uribe about 15, Dye 25-30, Crede about 20, AJP 15-20, etc...at that point, you look to make a move for a big bat around the trade deadline who has some serious power...where you put him becomes an entirely different issue all together. Best case scenario, you are looking at Rowand bounching back, hitting anywhere from 15-25 homers, Iguchi having a better 2nd year than first putting up 20-25, Uribe becoming slightly more consistent, putting up 20-25 again, Dye remaining the same, Crede jumping up to 25-30, AJP going anywhere from 20-25, with Casey also putting up 15-25 homers(anywhere in that neighborhood). You add those up, and you have power up and down the lineup, instead of concentrated right in the middle, which is much more valuable. That's a little bit like the philosophy the Indians offense is built upon right now...not many teams had their leadoff hitter hit 22 homers and their #9 hitter hit like 25...but that's really just how good the Indians lineup is. Their offense doesn't have the consistency the Sox did I'd assume because they are all quite young and because they just do not have the ability to manufacture runs...or their ability to do so is not nearly as good as the Sox is. There will be power no matter what route the Sox choose to take. They may not have 1 go to power guy, but there will undoubtedly be power.

QUOTE(Capn12 @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 12:57 AM) Sean Casey won't cost you 5/70 either. Its not all about who we want on the team, there IS still the matter of paying a guy 12 million/year for sluggish starts every year, pisspoor speed, lukewarm situational hitting, etc. I want Pauly back here as much as anyone, but not by any means, or price, necessary. This is exactly what I'm talking about when I am suggesting Sean Casey. And truth be told, Casey is very underrated all around. When healthy, he's almost guaranteed to put up .300 15 80 .825-.850, and when he's playing very well all around, he's a .320 25 110 .900 type player...which is huge. Also...PK at $14 mill per year, putting up .280 40 100 .900, is worse than Casey putting up .300 15 80 .825 at $8.5 mill...to me atleast. That same general philosophy is why this team won the World Series this year. Carlos Lee is almost all around much more valuable a player then the package the Sox received for him, without considering anything financially. When you do bring money into the equation, you realize that by trading Lee, the Sox were able to add AJP, Iguchi, and Duque...all vital parts to an amazing season. The problem that is then encountered is where to spend the rest. That problem is easy enough to answer - 06-01-06 through 07-31-06.

QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 05:39 PM) First off, I agree that Peyton Manning is by far the best QB in the game. He has the smarts to supplement his immense amount of skill at the position. However, when it comes to straight up smarts out of the QB slot, Tom Brady is a genius. Do you watch much football? Who makes better decisions that that guy? Who makes less errors? Say all you want about how good their defense and special teams have been. Ultimately, if you don't have a hall of fame caliber field general, you're not going to win 3 championships in 4 years! I agree that Manning would have multiple rings if he were a member of the Patriots, but to say that the vast majority of starting QBs in this league can just step in and there wouldn't be much of a difference is just insanely retarded. In most NFL circles, you'd be branded a bonehead for life. Hammer, I got a question for you Forgetting everything Brady has accomplished for 1 second, and putting him in a different system - is he starting somewhere with similar success? From everything I've seen of Brady, he's a good QB in the sense that he is smart with the ball, makes good throws, makes accurate throws, and is a hell of a leader on the field. He is also a money QB in that he makes the plays when he needs to, thus making him a great QB. But I also view him as a system quarterback...not really a huge knock against him, because he continues to win and put up great numbers, he's earning a good paycheck because of it, and because it's not a system that you can plug any QB into and see success right away or down the line. I just don't think he'd be near as successful anywhere else. -
QUOTE(bighurt2719 @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 10:58 PM) your stats mean nothing to me. we need kong next season, bottom line. If it means 5-70? HELL NO Konerko's good...and he's grown on me. I love him. However, he's also grown on Arte Moreno and the entire Anaheim Angels team. They are a little bit more secure financially than I am. Most experts thought the Sox needed Maggs and Caballo going into the season too(how can you lose that much power?!)...how'd that turn out? Losing Konerko could be a blessing in disguise...not because Konerko's bad or that he's not valuable - he was probably the best offensive player for the Sox this year, and would be next year too. However, losing him opens the door for offensive flexibility, and the potential to go in multiple directions this offseason as far as adding offense is concerned. You can look to move Dye to 1B and add an OFer...be it Brian Giles, or Ken Griffey Jr, or whomever. You can look at add a 1Bman via trade(because other than Konerko, there's basically no one that's available in FA). I'll throw a wild card out there for you if the Sox lose Konerko - how about Sean Casey?
