QUOTE(bighurt2719 @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 09:12 PM) anyone else and i'd agree with you. however, this is the big hurt we are talking about. half of his at bats this past season were home runs. and all chisox fans must love frank. we need him back til he retires. Exaggerate much? Says who? They won the World Series with him sitting on his ass for all but 1 month of the year. Why would the Sox need him? I think you bring him back as a very high reward, low-medium risk type player. He comes back at 80% and can stay healthy, and he's probably a .260 30 80 .925 type player. You take that offensive production for $6-8 mill a year, and the Sox would probably be getting it for $3-5 mill. Of course, you'd also be expecting defense, and the next and only time Frank should put a glove on is when he's playing catch with his kids.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 09:06 PM) Boston don't worry me with Paulie. Sure they're probably gonna offer a big deal, but Paulie has said before, he doesn't want to live in Boston and the East Coast. Hideki Matsui said he didn't want to sign with the Yankees* How'd that work out? *atleast I seem to remember him saying this...maybe I'm just crazy

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 12:23 AM) Hermanson threw 95 this year??? As far as I coudl tell, he got hit quite a bit harder when he started being unable to locate things when his back really went out on him. I didn't notice these 95 mph fastballs from him really at any point during the year. Maybe not 95...but he was in the general range. 92-94 may be better. Of course control is always an issue. It was an issue with almost the entire pitching staff this year. If they had good control, they were good...if they didn't they got hit.

QUOTE(MattZakrowski @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 09:59 PM) chortle chortle chortle! The Ravens int one is still the best, I love the crowd shot. That's the one where he picks off Bledsoe against the Bills, right?

QUOTE(bighurt2719 @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 12:19 AM) el duque in the pen? i dont know, thats a lot of money for a set up guy, since we got such a great pen already. That's where he'll be most effective. So why not? Hope to death that he starts off well, a team is in dire need of another reliever(*cough*Yanks*cough*Sawx*cough*), and the Sox capitalize -
QUOTE(The Critic @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 08:14 PM) Here comes Cellville. And with it the frat boys/trixies who know nothing about the games and are only there for the "USCF experience", and the in-house scalping service, and the sold-out games in September when the team is 15 games out of the playoff hunt, and..... Did Maggs hit a homer?

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 11:19 PM) I always hated it when people said NYY signed A-rod. They traded for him, not signed him. LOL, reminds me of another pet peeve of mine. There is this "Yankee" fan at my school that was talking about the potential Yankee moves in the offseason, and he said something about trading for Barry Bonds and some other stupid s*** that only a Yankee fan would think about. And in the midst of this discussion, out pops this line... "The Twins are probably gonna release Torii Hunter too." Ya, the Twins are gonna release a guy, who has a crazy amount of value all around, and just f***in eat his $10 mill salary for next year. :rolly He was also cheering for the Astros in the World Series, and happens to be a Cowboys fan too. Pretty much likes cheering for overrated, overtalked about, overlys***ty teams. Anyways Marte - gone El Duque - pen Frank - DH/DL Willie Harris - gone LOL Manny - Anaheim(hopefully) -
On Hermanson, I think he is about a 2.00-3.00 ERA, 1.10-1.20 WHIP type pitcher normally when fully healthy. What made him so solid this year was his ability to use that slider-fastball mix very effectively. When his fastball was in the 92-95 range, you saw him pitch very effectively. When his fastball was in the 88-91 range, he was hit quite a bit harder. He was undoubtedly also helped by the Sox superb defense. No way do his stats look as good as they do without a good defense behind him.

Wyoming is apparently neutral in this debate, because apparently, there are no computers in Wyoming.

QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 10:33 PM) I agree we have to watch the finances, but how does tracey help that? In 08 would he not be eligable for Arb. and hitting .300/25/80.. make more than what we are paying rowand right now? Looking at the numbers yeah it makes sense to bring him here, with or without Paulie resiging. If he does, and we resign Frank.. Now we have a log jam, how do you plan on handling that? I assume we're talking Chad Tracy here. The answer is quite simple. You bring Frank back, and he's 100% from day one, Tracy then becomes a super utility player, playing atleast 4, perhaps 5 positions for the Sox. His bat is that good. Thomas doesn't come back 100%, and you have a stud LHB for anywhere high in the order. I like Dye hitting 5th, for some reason...I think Tracy-PK-Dye would be just f***in ridiculously solid. You add Thomas anywhere in that order, be it 2nd or 6th or 3rd or 4th or 5th...wherever...and you are unbelievably good and deep offensively.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 10:33 PM) Never heard of that Cotnreras dude but he'll even be better next season imo. I think Jon regresses a bit but still has an era under 4. If dustin is healthy he'll still be damn good, cliff scares me a bit going into next season so we'll have to see how that works out. Neal is a stud, period. Plus we're going to get a run or more off the era of our 5th starter this year, have Bobby Jenks for a full season, we WILL upgrade from Damaso, el duque is probably going to the pen where he proved he can be very effective. Even without any major changes if we sign Paul I think we can be better, no doubt in my mind. I wasn't arguing about 2007 results...though I had a tidbit on Cotts. I was merely arguing guys that had the best years of their careers this year. That's all. Ya, STFU smartass
-
QUOTE(aboz56 @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 09:38 PM) Point is, no Sox player had a career year. Which is what the post above this said. Jon Garland - career best in wins, career best in ERA, career best in WHIP, career best in IP. Jose Cotnreras - ditto Garland Dustin Hermanson - career best ERA out of the pen, career best WHIP out of the pen Neal Cotts - career best ERA, career best WHIP, career best damn near everything. I don't view his as much as a career year as much as I do a huge step in the right direction. Cliff Politte - career best ERA and career best WHIP Offensively...no one had a career year. That doesn't mean players didn't have career years QUOTE(aboz56 @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 09:42 PM) ...Marte ha(s) little, if any value FYI. Marte is erratic as hell. Neither guy is a major chip in a trade. Arthur Rhodes, making about $4 mill a year, coming off a horrible year, in his mid to late 30s, was part of a package for one of the more underrated catchers in the game, and was then traded for Roids Lawton, who was one of the best leadoff hitters in the NL for the first 4 months of the season, regardless of steroid use or not. Marte's coming off a bad year...but he pitched huge in extras in game 3 of the World Series. He has an affordable contract, and is still relatively young. LHP out of the pen, especially with the kind of stuff Marte has, are always, always, always very valuable.

ESPN ranks Sox #2 in Offseason Rankings
witesoxfan replied to Greg Hibbard's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Spiff @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 08:37 PM) A world series title still apparently wasn't enough for some people to stop carrying their "ESPN hates us" cross. Not talking about you Hibbard, but some of the respondees. You do have to admit...it's a little funny when a team goes wire-to-wire, absolutely dominates in the playoffs, and is agreed upon by several experts in the baseball world that this was one of the best teams in the past 25 years that they are said to be the second best team in the majors exactly one week to the day, with that 1 team being better the team in their same division. You'd think if anyone, they'd put the Yanks. You also have to admit it's not only a little funny, but it's flat out dumb to be doing this rankings 1 week after the World Series is over. The entire offseason sits in front of you, and who knows what any team is going to do at this point. -

QUOTE(bighurt2719 @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 03:55 PM) i agree. it's a tradition that i dont see changing anytime soon. Indians fans will very, very, very quickly remind you of 1995-99, and 01. Of course, Sox fans then get to ask Cleveland how many World Series titles they won in that time frame. Personally...I don't see Cleveland being better next year. They'll be very good...I just think the Sox advantage is pitching is big enough to overcome the Indians advantage offensively. I will also say to watch out for the Sox offensively next year. You have a lot of guys coming off career low years...Rowand was quite mediocre, Uribe was bad until September, Pierzynski hit for the lowest average he's ever hit for in a regular season, Iguchi was in his first year in America...if the Sox resign Konerko, I see them being very solid offensively. In the same juncture, watch out for Cleveland's pitching staff. It will be a fun division next year, and I wouldn't even be surprised if Minnesota shocked the f***in world and won the division. The AL Central is probably the best division, all around talent wise, in the MLB right now. Cleveland is a powerhouse offensively, the Twins have a plethora of young pitching, and the Sox are solid up and down. If only KC and Detroit could ever get s*** figured out. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 02:59 PM) Can someone go find the people who were pissed back in September that we had made no effort to acquire Lawton at the trading deadline? In hindsight, I'm glad. I believe I said yesterday in a thread that hindsight is stupid most of the time...but maybe I didn't say most of the time, I can't remember. That being said...I was huge for Lawton. Jody Gerut for Matt Lawton? That's basically f***in Joe Borchard for Matt Lawton. I do that in a f***in' second. -
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 1, 2005 -> 10:52 PM) It shows how desperate the Brewers were for a middle of the order hitter at the end of 2004. Desperate? They traded a CFer with a weak arm coming off a .311 OBP season who is considered a leadoff hitter, while having an arguably better replacement waiting in the wings in Brady Clark, a solid, but not spectacular reliever, and a minor leaguer for a LFer coming off a .300 30 100 .890 season. They had money to spend, and I think they spent it very wisely. If I'm a Brewers fan, I have to consider that the heist of the offseason. Unfortunately for Brewers fans, Aaron Rowand's second half OPS > Carlos Lee's second half OPS, Scott Podsednik had a better 3rd year for the Sox than he did 2nd year with the Brewers, putting up a solid OBP and stealing 60 bases, Vizcaino was a rather reliable guy out of the pen, and with the money saved, they added about 2-3 other HUGE players that later went on to help the Sox win the World Series. Hindsight says they were desperate. Hindsight is stupid (sometimes).

Seems like so long ago that Miguel Olivo was traded in the FG package. I can hardly remember him in a Sox uniform. Some other catcher has made me forget him and make him a long, distant memory. I love Big Mo...but after putting up an .830 OPS in San Diego over about a month and a half of playing time or so, you are not going to trade for him. I also think he's a horrible backup catcher. A good backup catcher, to me, is just a guy that is all around knowledgable about the game, has been around the league a few times, and is solid defensively. Big Mo is about none of that.

QUOTE(Benchwarmerjim @ Nov 1, 2005 -> 07:59 PM) I was totally surprised to see Hunter win the GG his defensive has not Gold Glove like this past year I'm pretty sure I remember him missing a "routine" home run robbing catch this year...a play he makes almost every time. He didn't play the full season, so he didn't deserve it on principle alone...but even in the 98 games he played, he played very good defense...but not gold glove defense by any stretch of the imagination. Amazing what a reputation can do for you. The Twins could/should get a lot of value out of him in a trade, even with a disappointing season.

QUOTE(mreye @ Nov 1, 2005 -> 10:45 AM) They'll never get it. :headshake Why would I care about OPS and slugging from my leadoff man? Agreed very much so. That's not what bugged me about that part. LMAO Bill Hall's OPS > Carlos Lee's OPS

QUOTE(BobDylan @ Oct 30, 2005 -> 09:29 PM) Yea, Joe Crede's a real bonafied superstar. The type you build a team around. Give me a break. People are talking as if he's irreplaceable at this point. He's great in the clubhouse. He plays Silver Glove defense at 3B(I won't say Gold yet...he's good as hell, just not sure Gold is the word to describe it). He's solid with the stick. He's proven time and time and time and time again that he comes up with big hits and he starts rallies. He's not a guy you build around, but I'm not sure you're going to find a player who's going to be able to fill Joe's shoes. This team was built on pitching, defense, and chemistry. Joe's a big part of 2 of those.
