2004 College Football Trash Talk Thread
witesoxfan replied to The Bones's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Wow, I was wrong. Some of you know what I'm talking about. Eesh...guess I didn't miss much of a game. -
I nominate the entire Photoshop Soxtalk movie thread. Linky Great thread, great idea for a thread. I was ROFL the whole time.

QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 4, 2005 -> 07:21 PM) On the AJP thing, the Marlins need a catcher badly, do they not? Jolbert Cabrera ... didn't his contract get sold to a Japanese team? I thought I'd read he'll be in Japan in 2005. They traded for Lo Duca last year.
-
QUOTE(qwerty @ Jan 4, 2005 -> 07:09 PM) Like fathom just said, jolbert cabrera could fill that hole for us and he would do so awfully cheap. Wow, I think that's a move we would all like. We get a good utilit player who plays a lot of positions and is decent with the bat, and Anthrax finally gets Cabrera

QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 3, 2005 -> 11:56 PM) WINNAR!!!!!

QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jan 4, 2005 -> 05:37 PM) So wait.. Are you Kenny Williams? some White Sox insider? possibly Pierzynski's agent? Maybe I am? No, to me...it is just common sense and is a reasonable guess. As of right now, the Sox payroll is at roughly $67 mill or so, according to the payroll thread...and the Sox threshold is around $72-75 mill, somewhere in that general viscinity. In complete speculation, I would guess the Sox offer to AJ right now is probably in the neighborhood of 2-years, $5.5 mill or so...$2 mill for this year, $2.75 mill for 06, and a buyout of $750K...and as of right now, it may be the best offer on the table. That does not mean they are not willing to go up to 2-years, $7.5 mill, or even 2-yeras, $8 mill, perhaps they may even be willing to go around the neighborhood of 3-years, $12 mill or so...we don't know exactly. You factor in any one of those contracts, and the Sox are still under $72 mill, which has been their designated threshold, or so people have speculated, and it still gives them a little room to get someone at the trade deadline too. As of right now, it is up to AJ and his agent to accept or decline the Sox offer on the table, even if it is below what AJ is asking. And regardless of what the Sox would give AJ, Timo's contract plays no role in signing AJ whatsoever. As I just pointed out above, including Timo's contract, the Sox will be below $72 mill regardless of the contract AJ would sign, and if they needed room on the 40-man roster, I'm sure some other team would like Jason Grilli on their team
-
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jan 4, 2005 -> 04:55 PM) Again, I don't mind him on this team but if it means signing Pierzynski, I am quite upset. The only way Timo Perez effects the White Sox signing AJP is due to him potentially blocking a spot on the 40-man...and there are things that can be done to get others off(trades, DFA'ing guys, among other possibilities). Timo Perez being on the team will have absolutely nothing to do with whether or not AJP signs with us...unless Timo said something about AJ's mom

Wade Boggs & Ryne Sandberg inducted to HOF
witesoxfan replied to CSF's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Ryno is a borderline HoFer...I don't think he should be in during his 3rd/4th year of eligibility...whichever it is...however, I do think he should have and would have been voted in eventually. Career numbers of .285 282 1061 .795 over parts of 16 seasons are pretty solid numbers...and 2386 hits is a pretty good number too. He was one of the better 2B in the history of the game...whether he was the best is debateable. If you are one of the best ever at your position during the period of the game in which you played, you should be in. -
Mets offer 7 years, 119 mil. to Beltran
witesoxfan replied to LosMediasBlancas's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(fathom @ Jan 4, 2005 -> 02:12 PM) I can't see Beltran signing with the Cubs if he doesn't sign with the Astros. He's a classy guy, and by joining the Astros biggest divisional rival, he'd be turning his back on the team that he helped make such a great run in the playoffs. Beltran may be a classy guy, but Scott Boras is not. -
To cover the Timo topic... I do think Timo is overpaid at $1 mill...had he been non-tendered, he would have gotten a minor league contract from some team and may not have made their MLB roster. However, him being overpaid by $500,000 is not going to kill our chances getting AJP. The Sox, as of right now, still probably have about $6-7 mill they can spend in FA....however, they will want some of it to be available so they can fill a need at the trade deadline if necessary. If they need say a very good reliever or a very good starter, and one becomes available, they will have the resources financially to get that player. Also on the topic of Timo...he is terrible. I would imagine that we'd be pretty damn lucky to trade him and get anything that could be worthwhile. He doesn't hit well, he isn't fast, he doesn't field well, his arm is good but he is sometimes slow to release the ball(and Jamie Burke knows that all too well)...and that clutch argument is garbage. I don't care if a guy can hit late in the game...if he can hit late in the game, why in the hell can't he hit early in the game? Regarding the offers to AJP and Taguchi...I hope we get them. I do think there is a decent chance we get AJP, but I personally doubt we get Taguchi...he was reportedly looking for Kaz money, and the Sox weren't(or shouldn't be) offering him that...they shouldn't offer him half of that. I'm pretty sure Kaz got somewhere around $7 mill a year...the most the Sox should go with Taguchi is $3 mill. If we offer him $3 mill, and that's the best offer he receives, he will likely head back to Japan.

And now.. your 2004-05 Minnesota Vikings!
witesoxfan replied to knightni's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
IMO, if you view the Rams as Dan does(as anyone should), you have to view the Vikings in the same manner. If that defense plays half way decent, they are probably one of the more dangerous teams in the NFC right now, because when they click offensively, they can't be stopped. I think the Packers win(it being in Green Bay and all, Favre being money at home, the Vikings offense not running well right now, and the defense being as bad as ever)...just saying if the stars and moons and planets align for one day, that Minnesota could pull it out. I did pick Minnesota to go to the Superbowl...but that was before the year, not knowing how bad their defense was going to be. Whoops -
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jan 3, 2005 -> 04:00 PM) There is no way it could be 40 pds! For Uribe that's a gain of 25%! It's just not possible in the 3 months since the season ended. I could see 10-15 pds. He should be able to lose that. I can't see KW signing him to a 3 yr contract without this issue being brought up. I'm sure he's dieting as you read this. I've got no problem with Uribe. He struggled horribly in Jul (I think) but then bounced back. I hope he can do better in 2005. What I like about the AJP reports is that Kenny didn't try to deny anything or cookie coat it. Instead he took the route of giving him a third chance. That keeps the stigma in place & keeps his price down. Less teams will be willing to do that. Of course they probably have a better C situation than the CWS. In any case this strategy helps me to believe KW will land him soon. Uribe was awful in both June and July, though moreso in July. He hit .222 4 19 .720 in June, and hit .123 2 5 .419 with an OBP of under .200(.190...that is 5 hits and 4 walks in about 61 PA's) In every other month, he hit atleast .289 and had an OPS of atleast .884 in every one of those months. That is the walking definition of extreme inconsistency.

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jan 3, 2005 -> 12:30 PM) Lee was terrible in the outfield, regardless if he made any errors or not. Half the time he never got to balls that most players would get to and perhaps the main reason he had no errors if that he only on occasion made difficult plays. There are a lot of times I remember balls dropping right in front of him throughout the years. Let's not make him out to be such a great outfielders, folks. Lee's range factor(1.98 compared to the league average of 1.73), and his range factor per 9(2.06 compared to 2.04, the league average), both tell me he is average to above average, and his zone rating of .875 was 5th among LFers who qualified(16 LFers qualified)...and you may look at that and see that Moises Alou in 4th with a zone rating of .884 would lead a person to believe that stat is misleading, but you also have to consider that Alou's range factor per 9 was 1.66, that he made 8 errors in about 60 more innings then Carlos, and had fewer assists too while having fewer put outs, and it makes a little more sense. Carlos is not bad...I don't get where everyone is coming with that. He is not good, not like even close to a GG caliber OFer...but he is not bad. I would put him in a category of slightly above average.

QUOTE(Winnin' Ugly @ Jan 3, 2005 -> 03:33 PM) I'm assuming you're talking about the play where Burke got bowled over at home plate. Ozzie even commented on how he thought it was a clean play and wished his players played that hard. Ozzie said that having not seen the replay. Burke gave him the plate. The throw was going to be late. Hunter knew that. He barrelled over Burke anyways. Ozzie almost undoubtedly gave Freddy the OK to throw at Torii in that first series in September, so it is very likely his thoughts on the matter changed. I would agree with 3E8 here...that play was anything but clean. It was a cheap shot...Hunter admitted so himself later in the year(he didn't refer to it as a cheap shot, he actually said he did it to try and light a fire under the Twins and get them hot...it seemed to have worked pretty well)
-
That's not good. I am not sure I like the thought of Fridge playing SS for us. :banghead
-
QUOTE(3E8 @ Jan 3, 2005 -> 02:22 PM) I don't buy the cancer for the clubhouse thing. I love players with attitude. When Jamie was blindsided by Hunter last year, I was sickened to see every member of our team just sit there and take it. Not sure I could agree more. The one thing this team has been missing is that asshole who will make teams think twice about what they are going to do next time. We get that, to an extent, in AJ. There is never anything wrong with adding a catcher who will hit .300 15 70 .850 in all likelyhood for your team.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jan 2, 2005 -> 06:39 PM) Fixed the part where it was saying Pinned to remove it. Next question was when we used to have polls did it used to say Poll: or was it just normal? Same for moved posts. There was nothing there. If it was a poll, there was just the title, and the same thing for moved posts. There was never anything indicating whether it was a poll(other then the green button that I believe is now purple) or if it was moved. I like it that way too, personally.

QUOTE (beck72 @ Jan 1, 2005 -> 05:45 AM) One poor 1/2 a season shouldn't discount the 3 1/2 yrs of steady and stellar work on lousy Mon. teams. UNLESS he was injured. I want nothing to do with Vazquez, especially at the asking price. We are fine with our rotation right now, and if needed, we can get another good starter at the trading deadline(or before)
-
The most positive way to look at it is that we got DeLeon, and then eventually Lance Johnson, for basically free. Otherwise...you are right. Bonilla was a stud for quite a few years, and all Hawk got for him was a reliever. It's kind of hard to understand.
-
I would guess they will have Mauer starting regardless, and if Mauer is not ready to start the year, they will just have a platoon of like LeCroy-Redmond-Bowen until he comes back.
-
Let's see if Ryne Sandberg still wants to play then :rolly

I am curious as to why everyone thinks Willie Harris is an automatic out. Against LHP...I agree. His .181 1 4 .488 against LHP is god-awful. He should not have an AB against LHP pitching in a White Sox uniform next year. Factor in that he had no SBs against LHP too, and that is all the more reason he should not even play when there is a LHP in the game. That's what someone else will do for him. However, against RHP, he hit .279 1 23 .701 with a .366 OBP against them, along with 19 SBs...so he put up pretty solid numbers Not sure about anyone else...but I do want to see Willie start against all RHP. I just never want to see him have an AB against LHP ever again.

The Top 5 Rejected College Bowl Names

Not sure about anyone else, but I thought this was pretty damn funny myself... LMAO
