  1. QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 09:38 PM) there were two strikes on him with a man on second, and he strikes out looking. And why would he be looking fastball? I only saw deduno throw one fastball the entire inning, which was the first pitch to Dunn. he also looked bad that entire at bat. PITCHf/x says Deduno threw 7 fastballs, but it's hard to tell because all of his fastballs always have sink or run (or both) to them. He doesn't really throw a straight 4-seamer. And a guy with Deduno's stuff is going to make a lot of guys look really bad. Nobody squared a ball up against him, and Eaton looked even worse. That's a guy I'd really like to see the Sox get if the Twins ever let him go.
  2. QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 07:51 PM) I think it's more having Dunn hitting behind him. It's not too often managers iwalk the righty-righty matchup to get to a righty-lefty matchup. At this point in his career, Dunn should probably be sitting in the 7 or 8 hole. He shouldn't be hitting cleanup, but the Sox offense is bad. Deduno obviously feared him enough today to pitch around him, and it ultimately led to the game winner. Abreu is a far superior hitter to Dunn, but acting like Dunn is a complete chump up there is wrong. QUOTE (chw42 @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 08:53 PM) It'd be different if he actually hit the ball hard and went 0-10. Instead, he's popping up and striking out on pitches out of the zone. Like Jake said, he's not ready. I'm all for letting him play as long as Gordon can't, but he shouldn't be hitting second, one of the most important spots in the lineup. I'm surprised we've scored 12 runs so far with a big black hole in the 2 spot. I have only seen two of Semien's ABs, so, if we're making judgments based on 2 games, I can make judgments based on 20% of his plate appearances. The first I saw was his last appearance on Monday. In June, July, or August, that ball is gone or off the wall. He scalded that ball. Today, he got rung up on a perfect curveball on the black when he was looking for a fastball. Again, it's 2 out of 10, but Semien has looked fine to me. He appears to be seeing the ball well and has a plan at the plate. I love him already, and he's 0 for 10.
  3. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 05:45 PM) Jeez, didn't know it was THAT sensitive of a subject for White Sox fans. This was just the worst I've ever seen it. I didn't take it to mean anything other than what you posted FWIW. Still, it was a really embarrassing crowd. There are reasons for it - 2nd game of the year, cold weather, low expectations, coming off a terrible season - but it's still embarrassing. That crowd almost makes the Marlins look good in comparison.
  4. Semien needs to be playing every day anyways as he projects to be a much, much better MLB player. Leury was always the favorite to be the super sub.
  5. I think we always say this kind of thing coming off a rough year, but they lose that game last year.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 04:54 PM) Bellisario on to try to get the last out in the 10th. I wanted to wait before posting, but even with the pen short handed, this is the only move that makes sense. Plouffe is a career .278/.346/.497/.843 against lefties, .226/.283/.381/.665 against righties.
  7. QUOTE (TitoMB @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 04:46 PM) Veal sure loves to throw balls. He is paid to throw balls, he's a left handed relief pitcher. I would prefer he throw those balls for strikes.
  8. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 04:19 PM) No, amateur sabermetricians care. You are wrong on this one 100%. Just because you don't like or know what a stat means does not mean nobody cares about it. The world does not revolve around you and your beliefs Marty.
  9. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 04:12 PM) Who cares about xFIP. A lot of people in charge of bringing in players for baseball teams. Rick Hahn is among the thousands.
  10. QUOTE (BaconOnAStick @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 04:10 PM) We have DeAza Ramirez and then the black hole in the 9th Assuming Perkins comes in to close it out, we should see Viciedo, Ramirez, and Konerko.
  11. So are the Twins gonna bring back Koskie, Mientkiewicz, and Rivas too? What's Cristian Guzman doing now a days?
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 01:53 PM) I love seeing this team sustain innings instead of depending on the homer. So far that is 7 runs in 9.1 innings of offense, without a single home run. 8 runs, and 3 of those runs came courtesy homers by Alejandro De Aza
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 01:31 PM) I'd love to know what was offered. My guess is that it was garbage, which is why both guys are back. Bucket indicated that Jack Z offered Dustin Ackley for Viciedo, and Hahn countered with Nick Franklin. Maybe this is the year Ackley finally puts it together, but put me in the crowd that has no problem with Hahn turning down a a package that solely includes a glorified utility player.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 12:33 PM) That's a great setup if you think the White Sox are out to win the division title this year. It's a perfect setup for 2014 to push for a division pennant. As far as I can tell though the White Sox haven't done that anywhere else. Felipe Paulino is on the mound, for example, today; he's the kind of guy you don't exactly count on to build a title contender. Platooning guys like that is a terrible move if you look at the long term plan as anything other than "win in 2014". In 2015, both of those guys prices go up and suddenly we're talking about 2 guys paid $10 million+ for that production, one of whom is a free agent after the year, and the other of whom you still don't know if he's even worth a bag of balls because you platooned him the previous year. I didn't think he should have been released, but if the choices were between platooning him and not offering him arbitration, you're pushing me close. The Sox were in "win now" mode in 2008, but you couldn't have figured that from the opening day 25 man roster. As Dick alluded to, Alexei played CF his first few games and Jerry Owens was expected to play a major role on that team. The rotation consisted of Buehrle, Contreras, Vazquez, Floyd, and Danks. Floyd was terrible the year before, putting up a 5.27 ERA in 16 games, 10 starts, while Danks put up a 5.50 ERA in 28 starts in 2007. Several other members of the teams were coming off very disappointing 2007 campaigns overall, and there is no way anybody could have expected that team to compete. They won a division title. Having depth and playing the best matchups is the best way to go about the season, especially early. If they fall out of contention, you'll likely see the Sox actively shopping De Aza with Viciedo playing quite a bit more. Viciedo will still end up with a lot of plate appearances by the end of the year either way.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 11:04 AM) Marc Topkin ‏@TBTimes_Rays 1h #Rays deal with Archer similar to what they did with Moore after '11 season, 8 years (w/options) for around $40M With options, #Rays deal with Archer would cover 8 years and be worth $45.5 million. Jeff Passan ‏@JeffPassan 2h Chris Archer's $25.5M guarantee depends on arbitration class. If he's a Super 2 -- very likely -- he'd get the full $25.5M. If not, less. Looks like Ricky may have set a precedent with that Quintana signing.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 12:23 PM) Then he should have been released or traded for whatever was available in the offseason rather than paid solid money to sit on the bench, which was my original post. You still have to pay bench players, and he's making about $3 million which is not a lot of money. De Aza is just over $4 million. That's $7 million to improve value or increase versatility or get production out of LF or however you want to look at it. If those two combine for 2 WAR, the Sox are getting a discount, or however you want to look at it. Trading a guy just because you don't have a lot of playing time for him and taking whatever you can get is really poor business practice. Releasing said player when they are in a very good, cost controlled situation is even worse.
  17. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 12:15 PM) He might not be the best looking guy in the world but he is part of the Holy Triumvirate. Is he the Father, Son, or the Holy Spirit?
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 11:59 AM) I've seen this script before involving Rob Mackowiak. I don't think these situations are as comparable as you believe. Unlike Brian Anderson, Dayan Viciedo has 1235 plate appearances in the major leagues, has offered mediocrity at the plate, and offers mediocrity (or worse) in the field, save a cannon inserted into his right shoulder joint. Still, even though Brian Anderson had only 35 plate appearances in 2005 and proved to be a clubhouse distraction in 2006, as Ozzie obviously never felt comfortable with his habits or his work ethic, he received 405 plate appearances in 2006 and played 134 games there. I would have no problem with Viciedo getting 400 plate appearances this year given the depth the Sox currently have on the roster.
  19. QUOTE (maki @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 10:58 AM) Agreed, but no chance at that, given BMO is doing everything they can to re-brand BMO Harris as BMO only. My guess is the Harris portion of the name has a limited lifespan at this point, certainly under 5 years. BMO is logical, but are we just going to have an acronym? That'd suck. BMO Park sounds fine.
  20. QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 09:05 AM) Some pictures of the Charlotte park. Wonder if a facility like that could be converted into a major league stadium. http://www.bizjournals.com/charlotte/gallery/16801 I would guess so eventually, because it looks like the outfield seats could be expanded. Didn't get a really good look to see if there was an upper deck overlooking the infield, but that can help too. What a gorgeous looking stadium though. I almost want to go to Charlotte just to see a game now.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 03:29 PM) Apparently someone approached Donald Trump about purchasing the Buffalo Bills. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/footb...0,7836707.story I can't decide if this would be awesome or terrible.
  22. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 01:12 PM) Considering the Cubs and their fans aren't teased about taking Mike Harkey one pick before Jack McDowell, or when they spend decades looking for a 3rd baseman, Ty Griffin one pick before Robin Ventura, I doubt the Sox or their fans will get any crap if the Cubs pick a star and the Sox a bust. This is however, pick #3 and the Sox probably don't plan on picking this high in the future, so there is a ton of pressure not to miss. They have to get something back for losing 99 games. As long as he's not injured, if he slipped, Rondon is the guy. Don't pass it up. If he turns out as good as they said he would previously, if you drafted me every round the rest of the draft, it would be very successful. Don't try to save money for a guy who will top out in AA if you can get a guy that has perrenial all star stamped next to his name. Couldn't agree more. The 2010 draft was incredibly successful with Chris Sale alone, never mind any future contributions from Jake Petricka or Matt Davidson (thru Addison Reed, who was taken in the 3rd). I'm guessing not many people care that Jose Ramos, the 20th round pick that year, was not very good playing professional baseball.
  23. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 12:17 PM) I think it's one of those things that would get picked on if we sucked, but it would just be something else if not the draft anyway, you know? LIke if we just win, then it won't matter. If we lose, the fans will find something to hang their hat on regardless. WHERE'S OUR JUNIOR LAKE?
