QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 12:17 PM) Controllable for next what, 7 years? You gotta stick with him at SS through the rest of this year and likely all of 18 and see if there is any improvement there. Next 8 years, including 2017. They have options for 2023 and 2024. They'll stick with him for a while.

2017 Offseason White Sox News, Notes, and Tweets thread

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 11:29 AM) Once Clippard/Swarzak or any reliever gets traded, I think someone like Pelfrey should be moved to the bullpen (or, even traded) so that Lopez, and eventually Fulmer, can start here. I don't mind that, but you also need people to eat innings, and a lot of these young guys will hit their inning limits come August. I've thought about Pelfrey to the bullpen before though too. His effectiveness, if I recall, actually goes up the second time people see him, but he is absolutely destroyed the third time. As a reliever, he might not be a terrible pitcher. -
Tim Anderson just turned 24 years old. He's as much apart of this rebuild as anyone currently in the minor leagues.

Anthony Swarzak to Brewers; Sox receive Ryan Cordell

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 12:05 PM) Yeah there's a huge glut of relievers available which has definitely driven down the price. Plus there's no one with the track record and quality of a Chapman or Miller last year. -
QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 11:24 AM) Where would Anderson rank in this list of prospects? Like 6? He definitely doesn't project out better than Moncada, Jimenez. 8-10

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 10:47 AM) Tell us EXACTLY! Think about a combination of Shaquille O'Neal and Joe Montana. Then imagine said combo grabbing a baseball bat and walking to the plate. Imagine them taking a few swings and how far they'd hit the ball. This is not what Blake Rutherford's upside is, but I'm guessing you have some weird thoughts going through your head right now, and I'm happy.

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 10:38 AM) Sox I'm sure will be interested, but I think the $ gets to an insane level for Harper/Machado. They might be better served to spread the money around to get several pieces. I don't disagree with this either. We'll have to see where the Sox are at when the time comes. It may honestly make sense if enough of the guys appear to be panning out. If not, then it definitely does not make sense.

QUOTE (yesterday333 @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 10:23 AM) I don't like talking about ceilings... very few players ever reach their ceiling. It is a better discussion to talk about what he is likely to become. Well since he is in A ball, what he is likely to become is something between his floor and his ceiling, so it's pretty damn impossible to know that.

QUOTE (SonofaRoache @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 09:29 AM) Harper is White and his team wears red, no thanks. He'll come here and bat .202 with 30 homers. Dunn, Roach, Frazier. Except all those guys were on the wrong side of 30 and didn't have much athletic ability. Harper is one of the most athletically gifted players in the game.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 08:12 AM) Except 1998-2001 And late 80's series of first round draft picks, Alvarez and Sosa deal, etc. They really didn't do anything like this between 1998 and 2001, and if you have to go back 30 years to try and find any other precedent, it's probably safe to say that they've never done anything like this. Also, signing Robert is far and away different than anything this franchise has ever done in the past. The White Sox are absolutely in unprecedented territory, especially as it comes to the current front office.

QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 09:02 AM) M&H had someone on (missed the beginning of the interview) saying "He feels like he slides faster head first". I don't know if that's true, but isn't there more drag sliding head first? Everything I've ever seen indicates that from a pure precision standpoint, a head-first slide is going to allow you to avoid tags quite a bit better, thus making it seem quicker when in reality you just have better movement to get away from a tag. With my much more dangerous they are, it's definitely not worth it.

QUOTE (iWin4Ron @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 07:00 PM) Harper is absolutely not going to be an option. He is going to get an insane contract. Put into perspective what the W'sox have historically done ALWAYS. When have they --> EVER Not that I necessarily think they will get him, but when have the White Sox ever gone full rebuild like this? When have the White Sox ever spent $50 million on a prospect? There is no precedent for what they're doing, so using precedent for their future decisions is not realistic either.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 01:30 PM) And that's totally fair. I have my own concerns with Rutherford, but it seems like the Sox believe he can be that kind of player. And assuming that's the case, I can understand why they made this deal. But to your point Shack, there's definitely a chance they left some value on the table. It does seem like some posters are really sleeping on the value Kahnle could have a year from. I think with relievers, it's best to sell high, even if they can get higher. Kahnle is a shoulder injury away from being worthless. But to your earlier point, the Sox have 3-4 potential superstars in the lineup, and that doesn't include the fact that they are going to have, at minimum, two top 5 picks coming up.

QUOTE (kwill @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 12:06 PM) This is the frustrating part of the trade as the White Sox will save money next year as they have nothing committed. Good Ole JR could have taken back a piece like Headley. He could be a nice veteran player to play some nice defense at third who knows maybe he has a nice first half and flip him. I am sure if we took him off the Yankees hands they would have upgraded prospect in take or thrown in another player. Don't get me wrong, I am not crazy upset over the trade, just not excited like the rest Hahn has pulled off. Please tell me again how the conversation went in the war room when Rick Hahn made the trade with the Yankees, because obviously you are well versed enough to know that Rick Hahn said "Hey Brian Cashman, please give me more prospect for taking on your Chase Headley" and Cashman said "OK I give more prospect" and Jerry Reinsdorf said "NO, I DO NOT WANT MORE PROSPECT IF IT MEANS CHASE HEADLEY MONEY!"

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 12:28 PM) Older admins/mods with not a lot of team control left on their deals who had no value to Soxtalk during the site rebuild. We traded them to TalkSox and SpankMyYankee -
We felt it was long overdue that we brought some new blood into our group, and these two have shown their commitment and desire to make this site a better place. Please help them feel welcome (by hurling insults at them and breaking them in)!

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 11:16 PM) Good to see some Yankee fans lamenting losing Rutherford on Twitter. Some like the trade; many are lamenting the loss of Rutherford saying they should have gotten Q for Rutherford not David, Frazier and K. They could not have gotten Q for Rutherford alone, considering Eloy is a top 10 prospect and Rutherford is, at best, a top 25-40 prospect. Had they included Torres, then they were talking, but that was not happening.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 11:12 PM) For better or worse, the Sox are now are set on developing their outfield of Former Cub Eloy, International Signee Robert and former Yankee Rutherford. If everybody pans out Avi could be DH and Tito Polo could be the fourth outfielder. Lot of candidates in the system for 4th outfielder. They now will develop an infield of Burger/Davidson (trade the one who doesn't make it), Anderson ss, Moncada 2b and Abreu. There is a young catcher in the system. The rotation: we all know there are 8-10 guys battling for that with Rodon and Fulmer hopefully leading the way with the guys we acquired in trades from the Nats including the fireballer. Hopefully the Sox when they are ready to contend will spend money on some bodies in the bullpen and maybe a DH and a veteran starter. If the starting pitching is as good as people think it can be and Moncada, Anderson and all 3 outfielders are all stars and IF the Sox acquire some good bodies for the bullpen via free agency (including a closer) there is your WS winning team. Or 2-3-4 WS winning team. Things will change beyond this 6 months from now. Be happy they are collecting talent. The Sox definitely have the #1 system now, suck it Atlanta.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 10:30 PM) After the trade Swarzak, that will just about do it for potentially interesting trades for a while. Next up, 2018 draft. Couple things -Interested to see what kind of prospect Melky brings. Guessing a high velocity pitcher with mediocre secondary pitches -Interested to see if there's anything about Avisail. - yeah, that's about it. There are guys that need to go or eat innings, and they may as well be waiver trades, so yeah, you're right. Hopefully Moncada is the call.

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 10:29 PM) Dang I didn't realize there was a 100% chance that we just traded away a prime Miller/Jenks/Thorton/Contreras and there's absolutely no possibility a guy with a 50 inning track record could end up being nothing 2 years from now. Damn you Hahhhhhnnnnnnnn Thanks for your input.

Also, consider the GM's Hahn is working with. Cashman is still the longest tenured GM in the game and simply does not lose deals. He has no issues with missing out on a guy because he can always find another, and always has been able to. Theo has been one of the most aggressive GMs in his career, but he's skilled at picking up players at their lowest value and maximizing that, thus allowing him to spend excessively otherwise. Rizzo is just weird. Cashman is a tough mofo to deal with. I'm not upset, but won't necessarily say I'm happy. Will have to let it sink in.

QUOTE (kwill @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 10:21 PM) I guess the big difference with some people is that they rate Tommy Kahlne differently. I view him as a good as Andrew Miller but with not with the consistent pedigree. Have a consistent pedigree is huge though when talking relievers. Link of Fangraphs Article today below. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-white-s...jor-trade-chip/ Another difference though is that Kahlne will be cheaper than Miller moving forward with Miller making another 2/18 after the time of the trade. Kahlne still has all three years of arbitration left which if he does really well will equal what 3/15. Remember what happend to Dellon Betances. Then on top of it you add the additional value of David Robertson and Todd Frazier( even if marginal) with taking back Clippard. In my opinion, you should be able to match or get better value than what the Yankees got for Miller last year at the deadline. Rutherford is a good start but you need at least another 2 intriguing pieces to get me excited. But Tyler Thornburg and Carson Smith looked like great relievers too. The Red Sox traded for both and have gotten like 7 innings combined between the two. ABTR.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 10:18 PM) Sounds like Sox wanted Groome https://mobile.twitter.com/BostonStrong_34/...511315572547588 I love Boston homers more than I love any other homer. Dombrowski's reputation is to take over talented teams with good farm systems and then just f***ing destroy them for a 2-5 year run. Ask Dombrowski how the Tigers are doing right now.
