Q may get moved "sooner than you think"
witesoxfan replied to Princess Dye's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Wanne @ Jul 11, 2017 -> 10:43 PM) I hear what yer sayin'....but I don't want to "settle" for an underwhelming return. Quintana has ridiculous value...and if he's at peak value...you don't settle. Of course that's just my 2¢... His absolute peak value as an outright baseball player was this offseason. However, there was not a sufficient market for Jose Quintana this offseason, thus it diminished the market for his return, and teams were not willing to pay the price necessary. Since then, Jose Quintana's actual value as a baseball player has gone down; HOWEVER, there are now several new buyer's into the market, thus increasing the demand for Jose Quintana, and as such, we are probably at peak market as of this 96 hours lay-off. If Jose Quintana had been his normal 3.30 ERA/FIP self, we would be looking at a load of top prospects. However, due to his slight under-performance to date - let's not act like a guy on his way to a 3.5 fWAR season is suddenly chopped liver - it is understandable that the overall price that we have been accustomed to asking is not the price that will be met. My prediction is that the Sox end up with Woodruff, Erceg, Diaz, and Hader from Milwaukee while possibly having to include Swarzak. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 11, 2017 -> 06:57 PM) So if it's Brewers, package ideas? -Brinson seems like a must - Gatewood - Woodruff Regardless of ceiling, don't see any way that the current Sox regime would take Gatewood over Diaz. -
QUOTE (hi8is @ Jul 11, 2017 -> 05:55 PM) Is a catcher no longer considered a member of the infield? Perhaps it never was and I'm just further solidifying my title of village idiot. I've never considered the catcher an infielder, just as I've never considered a pitcher an infielder. You have the battery, infield, and outfield.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jul 11, 2017 -> 05:50 PM) So do you all think the Sox leaked the "Quintana is moving soon" bits to get the 29 other GMs to grab their nuts n get to work? Nope, I think what it comes down to is that Hahn and other teams have made offers that the White Sox are comfortable taking at this juncture so now they're saying something along the lines of, "we've received an offer we can accept for Jose Quintana. To be fair to everyone involved, please provide us your best offer and you will know within the next couple of hours what we've decided." -
I know the Sox are 9 games ahead of the Phillies right now, but I really don't think that is too big of a gap to jump. With that difficult of a schedule plus selling pieces off and bringing up inexperienced players, it really wouldn't surprise me terribly for them to play right around .300 baseball down the stretch. Frankly, once Quintana is gone, I don't see much of a reason to keep around guys like Shields, Melky, Frazier, Swarzak, Holland, Gonzalez, or Robertson, though they'll be dealt as the offers come in. Maybe we even see surprises and guys like Kahnle and Avisail are dealt too. The team could be really, really ugly in the second half.

Anthony Swarzak to Brewers; Sox receive Ryan Cordell

QUOTE (zisk @ Jul 10, 2017 -> 03:21 PM) I loved Britt burns. I remember him blowing a 9-2 lead in the fifth inning giving up six runs. Fregosi left him in and he wound up pitching a complete game, winning 9-8. Could you imagine that happening today? It was actually La Russa. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BA...198507130.shtml Britt Burns' last year with the Sox was '85 (and his last year in the majors). Fregosi's first with the Sox was '86. And no, that wouldn't happen today. Not that abuse like that was necessarily the reason, but Burns had a degenerative hip condition end his career. Better maintenance and less stress could have lengthened his career. -
Jones out for Season, nerve repositioning surgery

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 10, 2017 -> 09:17 PM) It's a damn shame. Have to imagine he had a decent market last offseason. Could have been a real trade asset. Always sell relievers. -
QUOTE (soxfan49 @ Jul 8, 2017 -> 12:41 PM) Melky may be pretty average overall but he has been really f***ing good with RISP, in the 7th inning on, etc. I think he can net a top 100 prospect back (I hope). I don't think so. I think you are looking at a top 250 prospect. Poor defensive player with not much speed, not much power. He's a good hitter who will help a contender down the stretch, but there's not a ton of value there. Best bet would be to identify a talented player in the low, low minors.

QUOTE (daggins @ Jul 8, 2017 -> 01:19 PM) Looks like Ynoa cleared waivers, so he's off to Charlotte. Looks like I'm in the clear.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 7, 2017 -> 07:59 PM) That's what we tried doing with Peavy a few years back. That was always KW's M.O. Peavy, Garcia, Everett, Alomar come to mind immediately. Youkilis to some extent too, though that was under different circumstances.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Jul 7, 2017 -> 11:42 AM) As of August 1st, the White Sox will be renamed the White Knights with the arrival of 12 players from Charlotte. White Knights gear will be available till the end of the season. The increase in merchandise revenue will be given to the Charlotte AAA franchise which will be forced to cancel the rest of their season due to lack of players. The only way I will accept this is if Guaranteed Rate Field or whatever is renamed to White Castle Stadium.

Anthony Swarzak to Brewers; Sox receive Ryan Cordell

QUOTE (FT35 @ Jul 7, 2017 -> 09:30 AM) I kinda want to hear his solution! How he thinks we should be doing things. Is he the guy who sits in the back of the room and just constantly finds something wrong with everyone's ideas but has none of his own or does he actually have an alternative solution that would work!? We're taking the same route that successful GMs have taken to pull a losing franchise back into relevancy, but for some reason it's wrong when we take the proven track record path that other organizations have taken. There's never any sort of thought behind the complaint--any sort of direction moving towards an alternate way of doing things...it just starts and ends with a complaint. Come forward! Step right up to the box and lay out the master plan behind all the sarcasm and doubt to the way we're doing things! Just make sure it's air tight, because all of us will "help you" seek out any holes in your theory in the same way you have "helped us" see the holes in ours. Readyyyyyyyyy GO! We're all ears! Teach us!! He wants the White Sox to rebuild by signing all the free agents. It's pretty much the worst plan. -
Anthony Swarzak to Brewers; Sox receive Ryan Cordell
witesoxfan replied to username's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Let's blow through 4 trades in the last 30 years, real quick: -In 1987, the Braves traded Doyle Alexander to the Tigers. In return, they received John Smoltz. -In 1997, the Red Sox traded Heathcliff Slocumb to the Mariners. In return, they received Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek. -In 2008, the Indians traded Casey Blake to the Dodgers. In return, they received Jon Meloan and Carlos Santana. -In 2016, the Padres traded James Shields to the White Sox. In return, they received the second coming of Christ. This is why you trade guys who don't have much trade value. Anthony Swarzak has been a very good reliever, but he's 31 on a 1 year contract. If you understand economics at all, you understand why he doesn't have much value. You are not going to spend a lot of money on a 22 year old Honda Civic that recently had work done to the transmission, even if it's running phenomenally right now. Same story, except that you don't have a contract that expires with that Honda Civic at the end of the year, whereby that Honda Civic can pick its new owner. Greg, you're smarter than this. Stop trolling. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 6, 2017 -> 03:05 PM) Ynoa has been stinking the joint up and is out of options. His velocity is down as well. He probably won't be claimed, and will be with the Knights shortly. Thank you. Ynoa has talent but right now, he sucks. They may lose him to a non-contender, like the Phillies, but it happens. If the Nationals claimed Ynoa thinking he will fix their bullpen woes, I'd be surprised. If they claim him and he DOES fix their bullpen woes, I'll buy everyone beef sandwiches from Portillos.

Tyler Flowers is MLB's Most-Improved Player
witesoxfan replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The dude has been running a BABIP of about .360 for his past 1200 plate appearances, and is one of the best framers in the league, nevermind the leadership skills so many Sox players suggested he had. His .387 BABIP is unsustainable because of a 24% line drive rate, not who he is as a hitter. Tyler Flowers is a good player, and I am very happy for him. He's 31 and probably will only be around as a starter for another 2 years. The Sox still screwed up letting him go. However, the biggest knock on Tyler Flowers when he was the biggest piece acquired for Javy Vazquez was that his defense was probably not going to take him to the big leagues. He's one of the best catchers in the game at framing, which is seemingly the best skill a catcher can have. The Sox may not develop hitters, but they apparently can develop catchers defensively. Chris Stewart stuck around for a long time with a bat that was butt because he could frame. This is why I don't worry about Zach Collins hitting .200 or whatever in A-ball. If he ultimately hits .240, shows plate discipline, and hits for power, the Sox probably have a 4-5 WAR catcher, because I imagine by the time he's in the majors, FanGraphs will have incorporated pitch framing into their catcher algorithm. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 11:17 AM) Not if putting up a 35-40 error season starts to impact his offense to the extent he's barely replacement player level or below. His first two years are starting to closely resemble Jose Reyes' first two years. Given, Reyes was about 3 years younger, but they are probably both along the same timeline as far as baseball experience is concerned. There is no harm in letting Anderson play the next 2-3 years at SS. If he doesn't stick, you use him as a super utility player and try the next guy. You don't sign Alcides Escobar, who has been probably the worst SS in the majors this year. And, the sad thing is, Escobar really hasn't seen much in the way of bad luck. His BABIP this year is .269, which is only 26 points off of his career BABIP of .295. He is legitimately a -1 WAR player now. If you're going to sign Alcides Escobar, you may as well sign Erick Aybar or Alexei Ramirez.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 11:09 AM) Hell, they could just sign Alcides Escobar (probably the best defensive SS in the game, him or Simmons) for $10 million/two years and target other more legit trade candidates instead of yet more utility infielders... Move Anderson or Moncada to CF, leave the other at 2B. Or Sanchez at 2b and both those guys in the OF with Avisail. Of course, the most obvious option is Leury Garcia at SS. The highest ceiling SS the White Sox have is Tim Anderson. Tim Anderson is the most obvious option for SS.
-
QUOTE (zisk @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 10:42 AM) If the Sox make a deal with the Yankees, it would be nice if they ask for a ss named Thairo Estrada as A finishing piece. 21 yrs. old really good glove. Looks like he can hit for average and runs pretty well. It might light a fire under TA as an extra incentive. I would prefer they look to someone else. His ceiling looks to be that of someone like Jamey Carroll. Decent contact skills and plate discipline, but there's no power whatsoever. He's a utility player at his best. The Sox have plenty of those.
-
QUOTE (Soha @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 10:10 AM) To me, you don't move a guy like Quintana to Cleveland or Minnesota period. I don't care how much more they offer. Because when the Sox get good in 2-3 years (hopefully), we then have to deal with Quintana in our division. For the Cubs though - that's just being petty. I mean, maybe you're right. But if they're taking an half-assed approach to the rebuild with that kind of mindset, then this thing might be doomed before it starts. I would offer Quintana to whichever team made the best offer. The Sox aren't going to be good until at least 2020, right? Well the following year, Quintana's contract expires, and he would be free to sign with whichever team he wants.

Putnam's arm is held together with gum and paperclips, but he's a great reliever when he's the mound. Petricka has never really impressed me. Decent velocity, ball moves a bit, but it's nothing special. He has the look of a run of the mill AAAA reliever. Maybe I'm wrong on that.

Potential and Likely Draft pick busts 2008-present
witesoxfan replied to tray's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This is pretty much how it goes for every team's 1st round picks over an 8 year span. If you can say that they had 3 years where their first round wasn't a bust out of 8, then I feel they are legitimately doing pretty well. You have absolutely no perspective put into this, just that these guys are "busts." -
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jun 27, 2017 -> 02:42 PM) I certainly would be interested in Albies. He has reached AAA at age 20 and is excellent defensively. A .759 OPS considering his age and level is very good. Acuna and Maitan are likely considered untouchable by the Braves at this point. Pache has really raised his prospect stock and would be an excellent pick up. I don't think the Braves trade him as a third or fourth piece in a deal. Acuna or Maitan + Allard or Newcomb + Pache + Jackson would be an enormous haul for the White Sox that is not happening I've mentioned it before, but there's a lot about Albies game reminds me of Yolmer Sanchez. Sanchez appears to be a pretty decent player, but do you want a slightly better version of him being the main piece you acquire in return for Quintana? I'm really not a big fan.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 27, 2017 -> 12:36 PM) Hahn sure knows how to stay popular ... by satisfying the trade-crowd. He has the best job in Chicago. Nobody cares about the crap he and KW have put on the field they only care about future names and future trades. All of the guys are available? Well, out of all of the guys on the MLB club the only players anybody will want are Abreu, Robertson, Q, Avisail Garcia and Anderson and they probably are not trading Avi, Abreu or Anderson. LOL no

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 27, 2017 -> 11:00 AM) I've not seen a single place other than Keith Law suggest he's even remotely close to that. That'd be the top prospect in baseball. Yeah, I've seen 50-55 grades. A good prospect, but nothing otherworldly like a 65-70 would be.
