  1. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 23, 2017 -> 03:01 PM) Why? They're under contract. That doesn't make sense. Is Alexei Ramirez still on the roster? He can't go anywhere now that Jose Abreu is... oh wait. Abreu is only under contract through 2019, and the best return you're probably looking at is a top 150 prospect and a lottery ticket, probably guys who are currently valued as 40-45 FV players. He's not blocking anyone in the minors and just turned 30. There's no real point in dealing a guy like Abreu at this juncture.
  2. I think his value will ultimately be its highest at the trade deadline this year. Any team acquiring him will be paying for, at most, 8 months of service, compared to the 12 months this offseason, thus decreasing the total monetary expenditure by 30-33%. Said acquiring team will also still have control of Robertson for 2 postseason runs, so if that team were not in a position to qualify for the postseason in 2018, they'd still have time to flip him and reacquire some lost assets. If they are, then they have him both postseason runs. This is different than a starting pitcher simply because a starting pitcher will only get, say, 10-12 starts prior to the postseason, which is, at most, a 2 win upgrade (unless said pitcher pitches like Randy Johnson from 1998-2002). A reliever could realistically pitch upwards of 25-30 games down the stretch, all in high leverage spots, which could theoretically "add" 4-5 wins, not necessarily as a result of their own production but simply based on being able to maintain a lead down the stretch where that team previously was not able to save that lead. If the Sox have to kick in money to get a better prospect, they should, but regardless, they should get a better return for Robertson at the deadline than any other time throughout the process.
  3. QUOTE (peavy44 @ May 20, 2017 -> 12:47 PM) Are we sure that picture is not photoshopped to? what? It's his actual account, if it is photoshopped, he photoshopped a White Sox hat onto his own head.
  4. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 20, 2017 -> 12:56 AM) Why would anybody root for a loss? There are no fricking guarantees. They could draft a Fulmer or Rodon just as easily as a Trout. It's all a crapshoot. Winning, however, is immediate graitification. Or a Sale. They drafted him too. Each win is gratifying, but losing is not bad. Enjoy watching the White Sox.
  5. Well folks, the impossible has happened - Quintana has lowered his ERA to 3.92. Officially below 4! I was pretty sure there was math that suggested this couldn't happen, but BAH GOD on May 19th, Quintana has an ERA below 4. The guy is still a good pitcher. He's going to fetch a haul if the Sox end up dealing him.

  7. QUOTE (fathom @ May 17, 2017 -> 11:26 PM) Something to keep an eye on is Narvaez has a CERA more than 2 runs higher than that of Soto Hard to put that into context though. Have they caught the same pitchers and played the same level of competition?
  8. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 18, 2017 -> 01:43 PM) That would be extremely unlikely. Highest QB grade in the last 6 drafts would mean higher than Andrew Luck and not many people would have passed on Luck for Myles Garrett. That being said it is possible they misread the draft and thought they could get Trubisky later, but still not a good move if they really thought he was the best QB in the last 6 drafts. That is basically a generational talent QB. It is unlikely, but as cliche as it is, they are still the Browns. On the flip side, they do have a different type of front office than really anyone in the NFL right now. They may have viewed the market for Trubisky as being picked anywhere from 5-10 and they definitely had the resources to move back to get him without spending too much while Garrett wouldn't have lasted past 2, so they could have simply misread the situation. Either way, I wouldn't trust the Browns evaluation of Trubisky anyways.
  9. Chris Cornell was the first artist I actually discovered essentially by myself and I fell in love with his music. Probably the most recognizable and distinguished voice of all time, and really, his singing voice was an instrument of its own. So many classic songs. One of the best. RIP. I was in Wal-Mart Tuesday night and found Audioslave's self-titled album in the $5 section. I have the CD somewhere, but rather than look, figured I'd just buy a new copy. Started playing it in my car yesterday. Then this.
  10. QUOTE (soxfan49 @ May 15, 2017 -> 08:24 PM) Probably not the Browns since, you know, they passed on him Could have easily been the Browns, but they felt that Garrett was the better prospect. They may have also felt that Trubisky would fall, like many felt he could. I read a lot of things talking about how the Browns were looking to move back into the top 10, probably to take Trubisky.
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 17, 2017 -> 02:42 PM) Robertson, LaRoche, Cabrera, Bonifacio, Beckham, Soto and Shuck...hard for anyone at SoxTalk to deliberately do much worse. That said, Leury Garcia is out OPSing Benintendi, Bregman and Swanson. I don't know how Robertson and Soto fit into this group, and Shuck is a perfectly passable backup outfielder who was thrust into a role well above his ability. The White Sox paid $46 million for Robertson. Based on market price for WAR, he's been worth $26.7 million already, with 10.5 months left on his deal. He will almost certainly be worth around $50 million when it's all said and done, suggesting the Sox knew exactly Robertson's value, which is counter intuitive to your argument. Geovany Soto has been signed to minor league contracts both times. I don't even know how he was brought up.
  12. QUOTE (FT35 @ May 17, 2017 -> 08:13 AM) The Henry Cotto-Ken Griffey Jr Predicament Henry has shown to be an above average fielder and his bat has been awesome this year. How does this impact what we do with Ken Griffey Jr? If Henry keeps it up, how can they move him? Maybe this will help shed some light on this situation?! : ) Oh great f***ing hustle, this is amazing.
  13. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ May 13, 2017 -> 10:34 AM) Little sister just graduated from Drake with degrees in political science and economics. After she comes back from China, he's going to look for an internship in MLB. I went to China as part of an economic study group for 12 days. How long is she there and what city or cities will she be in?
  14. QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 12, 2017 -> 09:55 AM) A single + SB is not equal to a double, you can't score a runner from first on a single and a SB. And in the same vein, you can score someone from 2nd with a single and then promptly getting caught stealing. I had this same thought several years back and came to the same conclusions. Frankly, it's best to try and figure out what players do invidually throughout their time on the field (batting, baserunning, fielding, and pitching) and then use a cumulative number to try and gauge that player's value, which is how we come up with WAR. How to actually quantify those comes under scrutiny, because there are things it does not account for that perhaps it could, but they are always looking to improve their methodology in that regard.
  15. QUOTE (Special K @ May 12, 2017 -> 02:12 PM) I think his point is just that he can easily be bad very soon again. That may be, but there is evidence to suggest that this was a physical change in mechanics made by Kahnle, and the sample size is getting larger. It is certainly possible that this is a fluke, similar to Aardsma 10 years ago, but until that happens, Kahnle is going to be viewed as a piece of the future.
  16. I don't remember the exact numbers, and I'm sure someone will find the exact numbers for me too, but Burdi has thrown like 100 innings and hasn't experienced a full year of pro ball. I imagine he'll be up at some point this year, but he falls in line with the whole "have a prospect struggle and making adjustments before calling them up." His adjustment is literally going to be pitching for a full season out of a bullpen. He is among the least likely I view to be called up at this point. In fact, I could see them calling him up for September and then waiting until mid May or June of 2018 to call him up full time to gain another full year of control. Among the main prospects, as a full-time call up, I think it'll be Lopez, Fulmer, or Moncada. I'd put my money on Fulmer, but I'm not much of a betting man.
  17. QUOTE (oldsox @ May 12, 2017 -> 01:14 PM) 2 months ago, nobody like him. Because 2 months ago he was a pitcher we viewed as not being able to find the strike zone. The way baseball players are valued is not static.
  18. QUOTE (oldsox @ May 11, 2017 -> 06:59 PM) Sox four farm teams are a collective 20 games under .500. Not hardly Top 2 or 3. Moncada covers a multitude of sins, however. Well this is officially the worst logic I've ever seen used to determine the strength of a minor league system. The Sox system is probably top 5, very top heavy with limited depth.
  19. QUOTE (ron883 @ May 10, 2017 -> 11:02 AM) Count on the mods to derail a thread. Keep up the good work boys. It's a message board, threads get derailed, get used to it. What the White Sox are going to do with Todd Frazier is keep playing him. Do you want me to lock this thread now since the discussion has reached its conclusion?
  20. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 9, 2017 -> 04:50 PM) Since we're in a rebuild, why is Anderson learning in the bigs? I thought people on this board were in favor of not rushing prospects. I think many would agree with me his approach to hitting is horrific. And his fielding is average at best. Doesn't that scream MINORS in a rebuild? He's signed to a lengthy major league contract already, there's no need for him to be in the minors.
  21. There was a similar situation that occurred in college at a fraternity. There was an "auction" event where girls from other sororities showed up at their fraternity house and would bid on pledges to essentially act as a slave. That sounds really bad typing it out, but it was usually a menial task like vacuuming or helping move some stuff. Anyways, the members of this fraternity got their pledges incredibly intoxicated for this event, and one of them was so bombed that he tripped down the stairs and knocked his head a few times. Thankfully, these fraternity members were responsible enough to immediately call some paramedics, and he was air lifted to Sioux Falls. I believe there was some permanent damage and a lawsuit against the fraternity, but he lived. There were other issues with that fraternity too, including a possible recruit dying of alcohol poisoning at a rush function. Needless to say, they no longer have a chapter at USD. I imagine that Beta chapter will also be eliminated. Fraternities can be great and I wouldn't be the person I am today without joining mine, but, frankly, they can be incredibly dangerous too for any number of reasons.
  22. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ May 8, 2017 -> 11:34 AM) Well I am officially a married man. Congrats!
  23. QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ May 6, 2017 -> 05:41 PM) Only one division in baseball with 4 out 5 teams above .500.......the toughest division in the game top to bottom is the AL Central. Oh absolutely, I'm absolutely paralyzed in fear by the mighty Minnesota Twins. They might be the best team I've seen since the 2001 Mariners.
  24. Covey shouldn't be in the rotation, but if they see anything at all in him, they are going to keep him on the big league roster. He should be the mop up guy, taking his licks that way. He'd still get around 80-100 innings and he'd face major leaguers.
  25. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 5, 2017 -> 03:11 PM) You're just jealous you can't make that much of an impression in 1 day. Don't be jealous. Ask my ex-girlfriend about what I did the first night I hung out with her. Trust me, I can make an impression.
