  1. QUOTE (SonofaRoache @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 12:59 AM) I get that scoreboard watching is fun, but in all honest picks 1-5 are a crapshoot anyway. From 2002-2014 there were four guys that lived up to the hype. I don't care where we draft, as long as we find the right player. Still too early to judge 2014 in my mind. Have to wait at least 4-6 years before you can start making those calls. In reverse order, based on whether or not they were "worth" it: 2013 - Kris Bryant and Jon Gray 2012 - Carlos Correa and Byron Buxton, possibly Zunino 2011 - Gerritt Cole, Trevor Bauer, and Dylan Bundy 2010 - Bryce Harper, Jameston Taillon, Manny Machado, and Drew Pomeranz (this class was absolutely loaded) 2009 - Stephen Strasburg (also, some guy named Trout was drafted this year) 2008 - Eric Hosmer and Buster Posey. An argument can be made for both Beckham and Alvarez too 2007 - David Price, Mike Moustakas, and Matt Wieters 2006 - Evan Longoria. Picks 6-11 were much better, which include Andrew Miller, Clayton Kershaw, Tim Lincecum, and Max Scherzer 2005 - Justin Upton, Alex Gordon, Ryan Zimmerman, and Ryan Braun 2004 - Justin Verlander 2003 - Rickie Weeks 2002 - BJ Upton And that's not including a few others who did end up having value as disappointing prospects, and there were plenty of guys who fell out of the top 5 due to other reasons - signability was a big thing in the early to mid aughts, which is why a guy like Rick Porcello fell as far as he did. The draft has changed considerably for the better over the past 5-10 years as a result. No, getting a top 3 pick is absolutely necessary, and I think they'll ultimately pick 2nd. It'll be a tight race down the stretch with the Phillies.
  2. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/top-22-pros...-texas-rangers/ Not a bad addition for slot money.
  3. Soc acquire Yeyson Yrizarri from Texas for International slot bonus money https://twitter.com/whitesox/status/886299797128450048 http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playe...;position=2B/SS Not much to like, but why not
  4. I'm pretty sure they announced that Holland would start on Sunday instead of Saturday shortly after the Quintana trade was announced. EDIT: Announced yesterday just after 5PM https://twitter.com/ChiTribKane/status/886013869612826625
  5. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 01:52 PM) I wonder about Henry Owens as a throw-in. Former top prospect turned epic failure. His control is terrible, but that'd be a great piece for the Sox to look into acquiring.
  6. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 01:11 PM) Good post on the strikeout rates. The Royals announcers were saying the other day, however, that all hitters and teams care about now are home runs and that strikeouts are not considered bad any more. Just something to consider. Throughout baseball won't strikeouts continue to progress at an alarming rate with hitters only trying to mash it out of the park? That's why there are so many shifts. All they are trying to do is hit home runs and if they don't strike out and don't hit the home run, they usually just pull a grounder or pull a weak fly ball thus the annoying shifts. Strikeouts matter a great deal. If guys aren't making enough contact, then they can have all the power in the world but it won't save them at the end of the day. What is more correct is the idea that strikeouts are not the end all, be all. A strikeout rate of 28% at AAA probably alludes to a strikeout rate nearing 32-35% in the majors, which is unacceptable. Moncada will strike out more than usual, but as long as he can keep his strikeout rate around 27% in the majors, I imagine he'll be a perfectly good player. That is something he will need to work on, but we won't know that for a few years.
  7. QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 12:14 PM) Many Sox fans were and are against assisting the Ricketts clan, Epstein and the Cubs to another World Series. That's just a fact. If you disagree fine, but don't pretend that this rivalry does not exist, or that most Chicago fans are not fully aware of it and invested in it to some degree. Second, Hahn stated that it was the best deal available. Of course he is going to say that after he makes the trade. We don't know what the Brewers offered, how those players would eventually pan out, what other teams may have offered at the end of the traded deadline, or during the off-season. Why didn't Hahn just trade Q for the best available before the season started, like some wanted him to do? Why now? Because Epstein got desperate after Lester had a meltdown and the Cub fan base started stirring? Q's trade value was not going to go down immediately and it may have even increased in the next several weeks. Hahn sold out...to the cubs. If Quintana ends up helping the cubs to a world series, go ahead and enjoy watching with your Cubs Quintana jersey on. Is this petty? Yes, absolutely...but sports fandom is by definition fanatical and frequently quite petty. You wear hats with team logos and swear your allegiance. You root for the team and you disparage opponents. It is what it is. Don't try to pretend you are a sports fan but at the same time you are above it all. This is lunacy. There are publications that prefer Jimenez to Moncada at this point, and Cease's ceiling is honestly probably similar to Kopech's. The only difference is that the extra two they got from Boston have legitimate upside - Basabe as an incredibly athletic outfielder and Diaz as a late inning reliever, while Rose and Flete are probably bench pieces, if anything. If you really think that Hahn took a lesser package than the one he received from the Cubs to help the Cubs is among the most ridiculous conspiracy theories I've ever heard. Using the theory of Occam's razor, we should probably just assume that Hahn said that he took the best offer available because he took the best offer available. This trade is just as likely to leave the Cubs upset in the future when Eloy is blasting 40 homers a year for the Sox.
  8. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 10:51 AM) Yeah, although he's still walking too many. Would you want to rely on Peacock or Q, Wite? Oh, I'd much rather rely on Q. Even as good as they've been, I feel the Astros are setting themselves up for disappointment in the postseason. To some extent, they feel like the 2001 Mariners - coast all the way to the postseason with the best record in the AL (though the Astros won't have the best record of all time) only to get eliminated by a team with much better pitching. I mean, their bullpen is outrageously good, so if they can just get 4-5 innings out of their starters, they may be able to get by, but that's a lot to count on.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 11:14 AM) How much of a medical stage is there for a rental like this? It has to be very minor. Guessing medicals would be with regards to the players the Sox acquire, but still, if one guy red flags, just pick another.
  10. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 07:52 AM) This dude wanted to run Brad Peacock out for game 3 of a playoff series, and then "piggyback" their 4 and 5 starters off him for the remainder of the game and just use a "quick hook." You could hear Casey Stern sighing in the background and basically getting completely pissed off. Then he just went off on the guy... You want to start BRAD PEACOCK in your playoff series? What are the Astros waiting for??? How about actually trying to win now! He then went through all their young stars and asked WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO PLAY YOUR PROSPECTS? Do you want to bring up a SECOND team to play in the major leagues?? I was dying. Not that I disagree with the overall point, but Brad Peacock is pretty goddamn filthy nowadays.
  11. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 10:32 AM) People keep saying this but do they mean Sanchez moves to 3B? I think Delmonico or Hayes comes up first. I don't think so. Neither Hayes nor Delmonico are big prospects. Hayes has a .234/.330/.434/.764 batting line as a 26 year old. What more do the Sox need to see out of him? Delmonico can probably make it as a bench bat, but he's only at .271/.356/.455/.811 with a fielding percentage at .908. I'll the first to tell you that range is more important than glove, but that's assuming you can run at least a .930-.940 fielding percentage. Bobbling 1 in 10 balls is not acceptable. It's much more important to get Moncada up to the majors to have him start getting accustomed to MLB pitching and making adjustments with the big club.
  12. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 05:34 PM) Trout is back. At most, he'll play 117 games this season. Still probably going to finish 2nd in the MVP race.
  13. QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 09:51 PM) There is no way that I would have helped the cubs chances of reaching the world series again. Hahn felt differently but as a cub fan growing up in Wilmette, he does not share the animosity that most south side sox fans have for the cubs. Bob Nightengale's Tweets appeared to confirm that Milwaukee was trying hard to get Quintana. https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/885883624641355778 So Epstein was concerned that Hahn would trade Q to the Brewers. Perhaps Hahn should have asked for more from Epstein or went back to the Brewers and given them the last opportunity to trade for him, or maybe held on to Q at least until the end of the trade deadline. I would never deal with Epstein or the cubs, ever. There is no way that the White Sox were ever going to get a better offer than this for Quintana. It is literally a step below the package that Sale returned. Milwaukee could have topped this deal, but it would have been to the point where they'd be sacrificing their system, and they aren't at that phase in their rebuild. It's probably safe to take the tin foil hat off.
  14. My only take on this is that this is a good nickname.
  15. QUOTE (KnightsOnMintSt @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 04:37 PM) So its been a little over a day since the trade happened. How is everyone feeling about it now? I'm excited, the only thing that scares me is how far away they are. Obviously we didn't need anyone that could contribute right now, but getting a bunch of guys that aren't proven in the higher level scares me. That being said, I love the trade still. I think Jimenez is the best single prospect we could've gotten in return. Also like "replacing" Quintana with a top pitching prospect as well. Pain of losing Jose is starting to sink in, but still happy with the return.
  16. QUOTE (Sleepy Harold @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 03:36 PM) White Sox Release Everth Cabrera Oh no, however will I continue
  17. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 10, 2017 -> 10:58 AM) And being nearly two and a half years older... See, we keep coming back to that, but how much baseball experience do they both have? Micker lost like a year and a half due to injury. In baseball terms, how old are they? If anything, Adolfo may be a year older.
  18. QUOTE (turnin' two @ Jul 13, 2017 -> 04:45 PM) What? Um, lets see, Yankees ( no one), Red Sox (Moreland) Tampa (LoMo), Houston (Gurriel), the Angels (if they think they are still in it with Trout returning), Seattle if they think they are still in it, Texas if they want to be in it. Heck, even the Dodgers could likely use him. The Yankees still have Greg Bird long-term, so they have no use for an Abreu investment. Logan Morrison and Yuliesky Gurriel have been pretty damn good this season. Neither Seattle nor Texas should be hard buyers, and the Angels don't have enough to acquire him. The Dodgers have some guy named Cody Bellinger who they can play at 1B. Unless the Red Sox are giving up Devers for Abreu - hint: they aren't - then there is no point in dealing Abreu.
  19. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 13, 2017 -> 04:25 PM) I'll keep saying it. Abreu should definitely be floated. I am not trading him for some backend top 100 types, but if we can get a legit return (and we should be able to), we should trade him. I do not think teams will be willing to offer that much for him. What teams, amongst the contenders, are going to find Abreu's bat so significant an upgrade over other available pieces that they would go above and beyond that to acquire him? If you're just going to DH him, why not just trade a top 250 prospect and get Melky Cabrera instead?
  20. QUOTE (ron883 @ Jul 13, 2017 -> 04:20 PM) I'm getting sick of people ragging on me regarding the topic. That is why. I admit he is having a good season. His value is as high as it will ever be right now IMO. He is playing very well. I have always said that if he shed some weight, it would help him big time. Turns out it has helped him. He is having a good season. That being said, he has no place on this team in the future (unless as a coach). Ship him out while his value is high. He is prone to long, painful slumps. I disagree. While I don't think he's ever going to replicate his 5 WAR rookie season again, I could easily see him still being a 1-2 WAR player into his mid 30s. To envision him as a 1B/DH on this team 4 or even 6 years from now is not out of the realm of possibility, and I doubt he'd be very expensive from either a cost or control point of view, maybe looking at something like a 4 year, $60 million deal following the 2019 season. That has him under contract through his age 36 season. And while I don't disagree that his value may never be higher, this is similar to the Quintana quandary this offseason - his value was never at its highest, but the market was not suitable to move him at the time. Once more suitors came into the picture, even with a slightly lower value, Quintana was able to be sold at the overall highest market value. Currently, there are not many teams who appear willing to trade for a 1B, and, as I alluded to earlier, I don't think the Sox will sell him as a 2-3 WAR 1B, but rather a 4-5 WAR 1B because they intrinsically value the leadership he provides the major league club. Outside teams will likely not include that value into their own trade offer for him, and they won't come to an agreement. I won't rule a trade out, but unless the Sox get a top 50 prospect for him, I don't see them moving him.
  21. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 13, 2017 -> 04:12 PM) Who can the Royals trade for Darvish though? He'll command a pretty good return and the Royals don't really have anybody to trade. The Rangers could do better. Yeah, you're right, I was just spitballing a team that could have interest in Darvish. The Royals seem like a good spot for Derek Holland though
  22. Fun reading this today and seeing that both Cease and Eloy were scratches. Wonder why
  23. QUOTE (ron883 @ Jul 13, 2017 -> 03:46 PM) Hahn would be crazy not to. I don't see Abreu's value being any higher than it currently is honestly. I expect him to regress to his numbers of the past two years by 2018, considering he will be another year above 30. You most definitely shop him and trade for what you can get. His numbers of .290/.350/.500. OK.
