QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 02:08 PM) .08 is by definition two beers. Two. As in 2. 1 + 1. This is absolutely not true and is incomplete/incorrect without further context. If I have 1 beer at 8:30 AM and 1 beer 1 1:12 PM, do you really think I'm going to blow a .08? Also, alcohol typically increases your BAC by .02 per drink. Some can be more or less than the standard, but that's your rule of thumb.

QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 01:52 PM) Yeah, I was depressed with the situation this time last year, but bringing in Abreu, Eaton, Davidson, etc has me excited as hell. Hell of a job by Rick Hahn. I knew that was a caramel and nougat center in there. They still have a ton of work to do, and I'd agree that, even with the additions the Sox made, the Cubs have a better farm system. That said, I think the Sox are in a better position to compete long term because they can give guys 2 years to show something and if they get nothing but incompetence - Davidson is the biggest risk there in my eyes - they can make a change that much quicker. Assuming Baez starts next year, they're going to have to give him 3 years minimum.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 01:29 PM) That was a 74 win team though. Add in another 2 for Braun back for the full year perhaps and they still need something big to happen to be a competitive team? Do they have that? Serious Q I don't know their roster? That's all context neutral though. They also blew like a million saves too, Honestly, with a bit of luck, I think most teams are 85-90 win teams. Just for demonstration's sake though, 74 + 5 is 79, plus Braun's additional 2, plus a 4 WAR season from Garza and you're looking at an 85 context-neutral win team. -
QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 01:42 PM) Exactly. Some of those big names are gonna bust, but who knows about the lesser known minor league players that could emerge out of the Cubs system. I'm not denying that it takes quite a while to recover after hitting rock bottom. I'd argue that the Sox hit rock bottom this past year and they seem to be looking OK, on the road to a quick recovery. Having a Chris Sale never hurts, but they had literally nothing offensively and now you can say that they have legitimate pieces to build around. I just think Theo is going to have to get creative to produce a winner there. Counting on free agency, the minor leagues, and the waiver wire just doesn't seem like it's going to cut it.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 01:38 PM) Here's alcohol-related driving fatalities per vehicle miles, using 2008 data: Could compare that to DUI laws by states circa 2008. edit: Progressive Insurance lists the BAC limit as 0.08 in every state as of 2004. http://www.progressive.com/vehicle-resourc...hol-calculator/ Also, even as a conservative, it's not surprising to see that red states have the higher death rates, likely due to more lenient drunk driving laws. In North Dakota, rather than lowering the limit, they increased the fines. I don't believe there's been much of an effect other than the state of North Dakota increasing their budget due to DUI arrests.

I know Minnesota is zero tolerance, and with the increased awareness for drunk driving, I think .08 BAC laws as of even 2008 are going to be extremely outdated. This is a bit how I expected it to turn out too.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 01:30 PM) We are turning into a nanny society but that's a horrible example. Drunk driving laws are not harsh enough IMO It's probably been done, but I'd love to see per capita studies of DUI arrests for no tolerance states (1 drink = DUI) versus .08 states. I honestly wonder how much of an effect that has.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 01:21 PM) Im pretty sure those crazed MADD whores have coerced the federal govt into withholding highway funds from any state not at .08. I could be wrong. Just an fyi- if you can just feel the effect of booze it doesn't mean you are impaired. Something nobody seems to point out when these loons lobby for (and get) these totalitarian nanny state laws passed Having driven through South Dakota probably a hundred times during the summers, I assure you this is simply not the case. Also, I can feel the effect one beer has one me, but I'm not buzzed. Yes, it's cheesy, but buzzed driving is drunk driving.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 01:19 PM) His swing doesnt pass what eye test, yours. Outside of him starting out with an open stance the rest of it is relatively clean. Here is his swing at the point of the contact. And it looks pretty good. Head is down, back knee is bent, up on his toe, the bat is at the point of contact pretty well as well. Could he get into bad habits, sure. But making comments about its an atrocious looking swing is comical. You awesome. He was cheating a lot last year, looking for inside pitches. Pitchers were throwing him breaking balls away, and he was either missing them or rolling over them. That's very fixable.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 01:21 PM) Do they legitimately think they have a chance to be competitive in the NL Central next year with the Pirates, Cardinals, and Reds all in that division? I mean they get Braun back, but do they have something else useful coming down the pipeline this year? If Mark Reynolds and Lyle Overbay can combine for 1 WAR, they will have added 5 wins to that team. They were the only team in baseball last year with a worse situation at 1B than the Sox. -
QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 01:07 PM) What the Cubs are doing right now reminds me of what the Cleveland Indians did in the late 80s/early 90s. Albert Belle Jim Thome Manny Ramirez Kenny Lofton Sandy Alomar Jr Carlos Baerga Just a sick collection of offensive talent. So many can't miss prospects Of course, Charles Nagy is the only notable pitching prospect that they developed during that time period. The Cubs are gonna have to get really creative in putting together a competent pitching staff, but that doesn't mean I can't admire their collection of hitting talent. If you're a baseball fan, how could you not? The Indians' top 2 prospects heading into the 1991 season? Mark Lewis and Tim Costo. #3 prospect in 1992? Reggie Jefferson. #2 and #3 prospects in 1993? Alan Embree and Paul Shuey Beyond that, the time those guys came up and started producing is spread out like a mofo. Belle was a full time starter in 1991 (with cups of coffee in 89 and 90), Baerga came up full time in 1990, Kenny Lofton was acquired and didn't start until 1992, Thome and Ramirez weren't starters until 1994. They didn't win a division until 1995, which was a good 5-6 years afterwards. So yeah, if Cubs fans want to wait until 2017 or 2018, sure. Meanwhile, the Sox will have been competing and a competent minor league system for 2-3 years by that point, and St. Louis will have probably won another World Series.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 01:11 PM) Equating that to driving after drinking 3 beers (That's a DUI in our f***ed in the head country) is stupid. That depends on what state you live in. North Dakota has a .08 limit, and I have blown and tested out what I can legally do. I can have 3 beers pretty easily and drive home, so long as I wait 2 hours to drive. If I shotgun 3 beers and drive immediately after that, I'm SOL. The most I will drink while still driving home is 5 beers, and I will make sure it's been - at a minimum - 4 hours prior to driving home. If I have a 6 pack, I'm getting a ride.
-
I have driven home, likely at .12, and I regretted it immediately, even if I was extra cautious, in full control of the vehicle, and had my wits about me. It's f***ing stupid. I wish that went without saying. BUT HE WAS ALSO HIGH ON WEED AND PILLS. Dude was f***ing tripping man. Justifying this by saying "HEY BRO HE DIDN'T HURT ANYONE CHILL HAVE ANOTHER AND SMOKE ONE WITH ME AIGHT" is stupid.

Top White Sox Prospects - 2014 Pre-Season

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 09:49 AM) Any of the Future Sox guys have anything to say about Scott Snodgress's struggles last year? In January of '13 he was a guy a lot of Sox fans were excited about but statistically just put forth a terrible season. I think he's a reliever at the MLB level. -
QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 09:29 AM) How bout talentless hack? You are right, we are really throwing the word ruffian around lately. I'd prefer he be a vagabond, but mind not me, I shall just eat my curds and whey.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 09:27 AM) Tanaka to Rangers? Sounds like we need a new thread shut it potsie
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 09:13 AM) I am shocked Rios to the the Rangers has those numbers. Many of these started as rumor threads, and then the eventual move itself was posted in there. To me, Manny is the true winner in this.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 09:20 AM) I've seen Justin Bieber called a thug a lot all morning. Justin Bieber. He's more of a ruffian.
-
QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 09:08 AM) BTW, the word thug gets thrown around way too much to describe, and let's be real now, young black athletes. When's the last time a white athlete was called a thug? I don't recall that word being used to describe Incognito even though he was recorded threatening another person and his family with violence. Was it used against Roethlisburger? Not that I can remember. Oh but ranting on TV and being a poor sport now makes you a thug even though no real crimes were committed. I hate bringing race into this but just read twitter, FB and YouTube and Sherman is being called a thug and much more worse things including the N word. All because he sounded like a roided up WWF wrestler for half a minute, SMH. I ain't accussing anyone of that here, just wanted to vent on the ridiculousness of this. /rant No, it absolutely is a race thing used by middle to upper class white members of the media to degrade minorities. Personally, and I'm sure I'm guilty of it somewhere along the lines, I try and limit my use of the word thug to actual criminals and actual bad guys in the NFL. Incognito is definitely a thug. Richard Sherman is still just a douchebag.

MLB contract. $750K. $6 mill with incentives WTF

QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 10:44 PM) Jordan4Life aka #numbnuts aka #failedthe6thgrade Keep my name out your mouth, you herb. Shouldn't you be off somewhere getting clowned mercilessly. Cubs farm system is STACKED. Deal with it. The problem is that Joe Nobody does not give a s*** about the farm system, and their farm system is just as likely to fail as the Sox young players are. It's not ideal, but at least the Sox, in this situation, are in a position to find out which aspects they need to work on first. The Cubs are f***ed beyond f*** right now. It's at least 3 years before they sniff .500 and at least 5 years before they are a winner, and it could easily be way, way longer than that.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 08:50 AM) I think we should further discuss Richard Sherman's GPA. I heard he got an F in COMMUNICATIN' WIT WHITE FOLK
-
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 11:29 PM) The final COUPLE jabs. Don't forget he decided to go in to a psychopathic rage during an interview after the game. I would pay money to watch you and Sherman in a room together for an hour. It'd be aired on Comedy Central and be called "Richard Trollin' Joe"

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 02:19 PM) They are your opinion. You can't factually prove someone's intelligence. FWIW, his wonderlic score was 24. Also, more definitions! comment: : a spoken or written statement that expresses an opinion about someone or something observations: a statement about something you have noticed : a comment or remark THOSE STATEMENTS ARE STATEMENTS, NOT FACTUAL STATEMENTS QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 06:12 PM) Right....and it's MY OPINION that he looked like an idiot....what is so hard to grasp here? Opinion - a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge. Thus, you believe that Sherman is an idiot. That's the entire point of this conversation. You think Sherman is stupid and lacks intelligence. That's why you are calling him an idiot.
