  1. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 04:46 PM) If they stand pat with this rotation big trouble ahead. So your solution is to throw a bunch of money at the most inconsistent pitcher in baseball over the past 5-7 years. Dude, think before you post. And if you are, quit trolling. There are ALWAYS #3 starters available.
  2. Congrats Sox fans, this is the largest "specific" (parentheses added for the existence of poo, dick, and Brony talk) thread in site history for a player the Sox did not get. It is the 5th largest thread in PHT and the 4th largest non Catch-All thread. In order: Peavy to Boston - 4,126 2011 Catch-All - 2,980 Rios to Rangers - 2,818 Sox acquire MANNY - 2,570 Tanaka to YANKEES* - 2,532 also, I don't think that Peavy thread is going to be broken for a while. EDIT: YANKEES, not Rangers
  3. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 04:29 PM) FTFY Thank you, can't believe I missed that.
  4. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 04:30 PM) Save money buy buying a pitcher in this year's market. The big spenders are likely out. The Dodgers, Cubs, DBacks, Astros, and Mariners were all willing to spend a ton on a starter, and that's not including anybody else who may open the purse strings a little bit more to bring in one of the remaining pitchers. It's just not worth it.
  5. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 04:04 PM) Hahn: "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take" (Wayne Gretzky) -Michael Scott
  6. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 04:19 PM) I don't think catcher will be the only position that needs upgrading. Probably not, but the rotation is not in particular need to be upgraded right now. May as well save that money to figure out what holes do need to be filled (thats what she said)
  7. Frankly, there are thugs in the NFL. Aaron Hernandez is a thug. Not because he's black (because he's not), or because he's Latino (which he is), but because he's a murderer, and - not that there ever is a justifiable reason for murder - the logic behind it is absurd. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 04:15 PM) People should start using the word "ruffian" more often. Agreed.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 04:06 PM) Except for the part where we actually see if any of those guys can get big league hitters out. And potentially the part where we have money to spend to fill holes next year. Forget it, he's rolling
  9. QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 03:50 PM) So who ya gonna believe? Tom Loxas
  10. Sherman touched on the "thug = n*****" correlation. I agree with him. I still think he's a douche, but there are some people criticizing him unfairly which is making me sympathetic towards him which I hate.
  11. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 03:26 PM) The White Sox have just shown you that Danks, and for that matter, Adam Dunn, have not financially strapped them considering they were willing to spend over $100 million in salary and another $20 million in posting fee for Tanaka. Dunn is a free agent after this year too, with Danks a free agent the year after. They can also cut the cord on De Aza and/or Beckham after this season too. If they see guys that are going to hit free agency or that are available via trade, they'll have room in the budget.
  12. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 03:18 PM) Too many holes not to sign someone of substance. But the team is not going to compete. It's wasted money. If by some miracle they do compete, then they can go trade for players that fit. There really is no one in free agency worthwhile of adding to the roster right now.
  13. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 02:23 PM) What's the deal with Hansen's injury? Searched but didn't come up with anything. Shoulder. Lost a ton of velocity and overall quality of his pitches
  14. good work splitting this, whoever did so
  15. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 02:36 PM) The lure of the unknown is so ridiculous in sports. 25 mill a year. Wow. There's plenty known about Tanaka. He just hasn't made a pitch in the majors.
  16. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 02:13 PM) Smart people can act dumb, dumb people can act smart, what about that is making it so hard to understand? I've had to say this way too many times for this simple concept to sink in. I have no idea is Sherman is smart or stupid, all I know is that of what I've seen of him, he's ACTED stupid and has LOOKED like an idiot. Those comments are observations, not factual statements. They are your opinion. You can't factually prove someone's intelligence. FWIW, his wonderlic score was 24. Also, more definitions! comment: : a spoken or written statement that expresses an opinion about someone or something observations: a statement about something you have noticed : a comment or remark THOSE STATEMENTS ARE STATEMENTS, NOT FACTUAL STATEMENTS
  17. Also, just send him a few of these any time he starts talking https://www.google.com/search?q=your+point+...280&bih=961
  18. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 02:08 PM) Prince Fielder was making $4M/year with the Tigers according to him. Also, the Cubs have the best minor league system and are thus setup because they're all sure fire hits. Abreu, Garcia, EJ, Semien, Webb, Davidson, and Eaton are all likely to fail. Oh well that's pretty impossible to argue with, not sure you have much of a case.
  19. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 02:03 PM) 1. Even if it should be that way, I don't see the Sox deciding that 2014 is a lost year. Every indication says otherwise. 2. If they think he will be an MLB player in 15/16/17, then hiding him on the MLB bench does very little to help that - a lot less than putting him at AA then AAA the next year or two. So it stunts his development. That's why they will care. 3. No one is contesting that they are trying to get more catching talent in the system. The question is, what is their plan? I think him making the major league roster is a long shot and I think they are smart enough to see that. Therefore, that isn't what they think is likely. Going down that road, they obviously have a backup plan that is likely to come up, and the most logical one is the path I mentioned. With any of these Rule 5 guys, it really shouldn't be hard to acquire them outright from their original clubs. They've spent 3-4 years and have not been added to the roster. Most of these teams will not think that highly of them and they'll trade for them a song.
  20. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 01:47 PM) Sadly, he's in my multimedia sports class. Yeah well Mark Grace drives drunk and Sammy Sosa used steroids. And I'm arguing in facts!
  21. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 01:53 PM) To get back on Tanaka track... LOL... I have some real concerns with signing any player to the amount on money this guy got and others like Pujols and A-Rod and some others. That's a ton of bank notes for a long period of time for someone you just don't know can perform at the big league level let along stay healthy. He was a phenom in Japan for sure but even as good a Darvish is - just to compare - he can be beaten even if it's 1-0 or 2-1. wat
  22. Bring the guy in for a physical, let him throw if he can, and ink him to a deal. I feel the same way about Jenks. There's absolutely no harm in a minor league deal.
  23. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 01:00 PM) This is my thinking too. The organization seems to be high on Nieto so I doubt they're going to want to lose him right away and Phegley seems like he needs a little more time in AAA. Phegley has 769 plate appearances in AAA. If he needs more, then the organization may as well just trade him to someone willing to give him a shot.
  24. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 11:25 AM) It's dangerous to use outliers to predict the future, though. Castro's success illustrates that anyone CAN break out, but it doesn't make a convincing argument that Phegley is likely to break out. I agree with you that giving Phegley a shot is among our better options. And I agree that Castro's price may be (probably is) way too much to pay in our situation. But I don't agree that acquiring Castro at a reasonable cost would be a bad acquisition for us just because he's a bit older. Castro is unquestionably and significantly better than Phegley. I think the team is designed to try to be competitive in a three year window, and Castro is a good bet (not infallible, of course) to be a substantial contributor in that range. Honestly, I've changed my tune overall on Castro, but I still don't know that I deal Quintana for him and I don't know that Houston adds anything to Castro if they are dealing him for Quintana. A move I might make is something like Quintana and Phegley for Castro and Peacock.
  25. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 11:14 AM) After watching Phegley last year, I think the odds of him ever becoming a solid major league player aren't good. And I'm sure people said that about Castro in 2011. His rep was that he was a defense first, slap hitting catcher. He put those ideas to rest last year, didn't he? I doubt Phegley puts up anything near what Castro did, but I don't think the odds of him becoming a John Buck type of catcher are bad.
