2013-14 off season player movement thread
witesoxfan replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 01:25 AM) CC Sabathia looks like he lost like 50 pounds this offseason, wow. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 02:44 PM) Sabathia actually looks really thin right there. HEY I WAS RIGHT -
QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 09:23 AM) That would be epic if Tanaka created a half hour show on ESPN to announce the decision. And during the show Paul Konerko and Michael Jordan woud pitch the White Sox, and then an immediate rebuttal pitch by Kerry Wood and Sammy Sosa. And then if Lebron came to The White sox we could rejoice! This might just be the worst thing in the history of the world. EDIT: OK, maybe not history of the world, but perhaps MLB history. In the 2000s.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 09:21 AM) Now I have quoted you. This is so much better.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 08:59 AM) At this point, does anyone here REALLY want the Chicago White Sox to spend like $25 million per season on a Japanese import whose k/9 went way down and bb/9 went way up over the last two years? WTF are you talking about, way down and way up? His K/9 went from 8.8 to 7.8 (and it's 8.5 for his career) and his BB/9 went from 1.0 to 1.4 (and it's 1.9 for his career). Come on, man. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 09:03 AM) That would be a perfect way for the White Sox to stand out. Yes it is. You should have quoted me rather than that douche though, because I have said that the Sox should make a deal similar to that about 500 times now.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 08:37 AM) im just being a smartass. k0na never whored himself out to twitter like the rest of these guys we are reading. He simply showed up, dropped a bomb post, and left Bam, zoom, straight to the moon!

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 06:09 PM) 2005 down the stretch when Cleveland began to gain on us I frequently posted this lol: I wanted to burn my computer. I still do.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 09:19 PM) Buehrle lead the league in WHP two years before Cooper was even the Sox pitching coach. You can't use him for an example with anything. Mark Buehrle is one in a million. Don Cooper started in July of 2002. Buehrle pitched in 2000, but didn't become a full time starter until the disaster of the year that was 2001. Thus, it is literally impossible for him to lead the league in WHIP two years before Cooper was the pitching coach.

Exactly. If a dude has a history of being right, even if randomly and spontaneously, then post away. Ty Youngfelt seems like a homer Cubs fan.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 06:04 PM) With some of the hatred being spewed at him you'd think he walked over to Crabtree, spit in his face, slapped his wife, and yelled out nothing but expletives in the interview while throwing gang signs. Dude was channeling a little Muhammed Ali, someone he's stated as admiring, showing a little bravado. I mean the amount of hatred going towards him is crazy. Reading comments on facebook and twitter about how he should be introduced to George Zimmerman and how he's just an uneducated n-word. GMAFB. Dude, give it up. You are talking about the lowest of the low of the American population. Nobody here feels that way. I understand if you want to vent, but with the wording of your posts, you make it seem like people on HERE feel that way.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 08:14 AM) I wonder if we could have gotten Castro for Addison Reed? Just wondering. Does anyone here know if Hahn shopped Reed at all, or did he quickly close on the deal when Davidson was made available? No.

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 08:18 AM) I'm actually deleting the post, seems his "friends" posted it to get a rise from twitter universe. Sorry guys. By friends, he means himself and that he got wasted and thought he'd get a rise out of people. I mean, can we make sure it's a legit source before posting? We can speculate with the best of them. I can put out a tweet right now saying that my sources say the White Sox are close. I don't have sources, it's not true, but s***, if I'm right, I look like a f***ing genius. That's what people are trying to do right now, and they are running with and continuing on with it. There is no need to cite Ty Youngfelt or Tom Loxas. Leave it to legitimate, reputable journalists.

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 08:05 AM) Hold on to your butts: @TyYoungfelt: Currently Thursday, 7:30pm in Japan- have been told word will come in no later than 9p Friday in Japan or 6p tonight stateside...here we go Right when Hahn goes on CTL and announces he's bringing his talents to the South Side Yes, go figure a CUBS fan thinks this. Tell me, what does Ty Youngfelt do? Why are we quoting him, he of the "if it's Tuesday in America, it's Friday in Japan" ?

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 07:44 AM) This thread is HILARIOUS. Tweet about any team not the White Sox or the White Sox not being a real candidate = HOW WOULD THIS GUY KNOW HE'S NOT CREDIBLE EVERY TWEET IS A FARCE Tweet about the White Sox still being involved = THIS IS GREAT THAT GUY'S CREDIBLE LIKE I SAID SOX ARE STILL IN THIS Here's the reality. Masahiro Tanaka is sitting in a Japanese mansion with his wife on his face and three hotties working on his dong. When he comes up for air, only his agent and the four hotties have any idea what they're going to do. Anything posted by some douchebag in bumf*** wherever America is clearly a clueless one. We'll find out soon, possibly as soon as today (but more likely tomorrow). Everyone calm their tits. Thankfully, I have not said this. I have merely pointed out that almost all of this is bulls***. Like, "zOMG, MARINERS ARE INVOLVED, WHAT A SURPRISE" meaning Mariners are not involved, let's try and weed people out. "zOMG White Sox are involved...?" except that they've been involved the whole time. Cotillo's reports seem solid. Grazcyk's or whatever that guy's name is seem reasonable too, but maybe off base. Fact is Tanaka has been been keeping everything close to the vest. Teams and agents are leaking info trying to sell, sell, sell. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 08:08 AM) That makes zero sense. It's Tuesday in Japan, not Thursday. And Friday night in Japan as opposed to 6PM tonight stateside are two days apart. That's a person that truly believes Tanaka is the most important person in the history of the world, what with his time traveling. If it was an American making his decision about going to Japan, we'd be a hell of a lot closer.

FWIW, Sherman apologized for the comments. I like that.
-
QUOTE (dayan024 @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 04:59 PM) Robert Brender @robertbrender 4m Sounds like Tanaka's wife wants to live on the west coast. Happy wife, happy life. I'm betting on the #Dodgers as the landing spot. Play by play guy for Long Beach State Basketball. This is his opinion.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 04:54 PM) What I've learned in the last 24 hours is that only uneducated black men are cocky. Sure Sherman had good grades in a good school but obviously he must have cheated or something. I mean come on, there's no such thing as an educated African African athlete. Unfortunately, there are some people who believe that. There are still a ton of double standards in this country. Personally, I just think the guy's a douche. I think I've said that a couple times.
-
QUOTE (dayan024 @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 04:55 PM) JIM BOWDEN @JimBowdenESPNxm 5m Wayne Graczyk from Japan Times said his best guess would be Tanaka signs with (in order) 1. Yankees 2. Dodgers Money doesn't matter to him. The two favorites are the top 2 spending teams and best known baseball teams in the world.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 04:53 PM) The Sox feel confident, but so does every sales guy before they get the bad news. So does every person who thinks they do well on a job interview. Until pen hits paper, I don't care what's being reported. Like I said, if they know where his plane lands, that is an entirely different story and will shed a ton of light on the situation. Odds are, we'll know before that.
-
QUOTE (TitoMB @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 04:52 PM) But seriously, I just read through the last 20 pages. Y'all need to give up on Twitter. That s*** is 100% speculation, all the time. I preferred the doge reference
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 04:49 PM) Being first is more important than being right. Always has been, which is why the New York Post is the most reputable magazine in the world. I've heard all kinds of rumors and speculation over the last 5 years - some from media, some rumors, some from the insiders on this board - and I think those things come through about 2-5% of the time. It's a volatile business, and just because something does or does not happen does not mean it was or was not close.
-
QUOTE (dayan024 @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 04:46 PM) Dodgers Nation @DodgersNation 50s Wayne Graczyk of the Japan Times says on @MLBNetworkRadio he doesn't think Tanaka will necessarily take the highest bid. This kind of goes back to what I was getting at earlier - he's going to take the offer that makes the most financial sense for him overall. He's not going to know s*** about America and all big cities will have something to offer him culturally. But if he gets an offer that allows him to earn $250 million over the next 10-12 years, he's going to take that over one that will earn him $150 mill. It's fiscally responsbile.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 04:46 PM) Because he's guessing. Also negotiation becomes a lot more advantageous when people get desperate. Agent finds an assistant, leaks info to second tier reporters, they leak it, and so on. Easy to drive up the price. Right, I was mostly pointing out that Renck having this info is a stretch and he's just looking for hits. I've been saying this exact thing all along. Teams report they are "going to bid a bazillion dollars" so teams up their bids, while others say "we're out of it" in the event that other teams will decrease their bids which increases opportunity.
-
QUOTE (dayan024 @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 04:42 PM) Troy Renck @TroyRenck 5h Tanaka derby nearing finish line.. #Cubs, #Dbacks, #WhiteSox, #Yankees among those seriously pursuing the right-hander. "among those" Meaning there could be more. Just so you know, I'm pointing out the ambiguity in the tweet itself, not criticizing you. I appreciate the update. Not sure why Troy Renck - a beat writer for the Rockies - would have this scoop, but it's interesting. Cotillo's stuff a put a little more faith in.

My offer: 6/$126, player option (to opt in or out) after year 4, mutual option (which vests with 60 GS or 400 IP in the '18 and '19) for 7th year for $30 million with a $6 million buyout. We can work with the numbers, but something like '14-'19 - $20 mill '20 - $30 mill or $6 mill buy out This gives him the option to opt out after 4 years if he feels he can earn another mega contract (say another 6/$120 for $200 mill total), or gives him a potential $150 million through 7 years if he performs up to his capabilities.
