  1. QUOTE (SoxnGiants @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 09:12 AM) I believe that`s the 5th largest pitcher contract in league history. While Abreu`s deal looks like a bargain compared to what Tanaka got, how about Darvish. Generally thought to be the superior pitcher, he got (I believe) 6/60. Less than half. With the Rangers also paying a $51.7 mill posting fee, so in all, the Rangers commitment was for $111.7 million. That was also with them negotiating alone while Tanaka had multiple suitors. You can tell which is better for the player.
  2. QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 09:10 AM) I remember reading from a reputable source that one team went for a shorter contract with a higher pay per year, which could of explained the "nearly" caveat on the 5 offers over 100 million. I wonder if Hahn tried to be creative on the years and payout rather than the length of the contract. I highly doubt this. I am guessing the Sox offered a very similar contract to the Yankees. Tanaka would always have been able to opt out after 4 years, so the shorter contract never stood a chance.
  3. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 08:53 AM) So Tanaka needs to be a 5+ WAR pitcher for 7 years for the Yankees to get their moneys worth. I don't like the odds of that happening. This isn't exactly true. Teams are paying closer to $6 mill per WAR now, and that price is likely to go up over the duration of the contract. Depending on the breakdowns, it's likely that he'll have to end up being closer to a 4 WAR pitcher to "earn" this contract, but really, you sign this contract because you believe this guy is an ace and he can deliver 6 WAR production for the first couple years of the deal. 6 WAR 6 WAR 6 WAR 5.5 WAR 5 WAR 4.5 WAR 4 WAR = 37 WAR over the duration of the contract People are also assuming he has peaked. He's 25 years old. It's very possible that he HASN'T peaked yet and that the breakdown could be 5 WAR 5.5 WAR 6 WAR 6.5 WAR 6 WAR 5.5 WAR 5 WAR = 39.5 WAR It's not a terrible contract, but it's an incredibly risk contract because if he is anything less than Dan Haren in his prime. FYI, Haren over the same age time period put up a 32.6 WAR with the last year being worth 1.8 WAR. There is absolutely precedent for pitchers with this repertoire falling off a steep cliff.
  4. This makes sense, and at that price, it's for the best. Fits pretty much everything I touched on. -High annual salary? Check -Opt out after 4 years? Check -7th year if no opt out? Check This is the deal that makes the most financial sense for him. I never would have guaranteed a 7th year, so that is likely the difference between the Sox offer and the Yankees offer.
  5. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 01:28 AM) I did? If you could quote where I said that, it would be helpful. Thanks. Came off like an idiot = more or less calling him an idiot Your impression of him after that interview is that he's an idiot. Thus, you thought he was an idiot. Thus, you thought he was a stupid person. Thus, you thought he lacked intelligence. /mathproofs
  6. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 08:05 AM) They didn't actually even have to do that. It's basically just a contingency to his contract the winning bidder has to pay Tanaka's team the $20 million. It isn't like the old days where the highest bidder had to pay the posting fee up front just for the right to negotiate. I believe it can be paid over a 2 year period too. If I remember correctly, I believe I heard that $13 million is due the first year and $7 million the next or something like that. Nobody has ever had to pay the posting fee upfront. The Athletics won the rights to negotiate with a player about 5 years ago or so and couldn't come to an agreement with the player and, as a result, never paid the posting fee. You only pay the posting fee if you sign the guy.
  7. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 04:14 PM) And I'll wait here for you to tell me where I said he is unintelligent. You more or less called him an idiot. The definition of idiot is "a stupid person." The definition of stupid is "lacking intelligence or common sense." So there you go.
  8. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 04:16 PM) Ah man, don't tell me you're a Brony. We had this discussion about 300-400 posts ago. Yes, he is a Brony.
  9. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 02:59 PM) Schools vary due to grade inflation. Sometimes grades don't mean much but most often they do especially from a school like Stanford. Also you are correct that intelligence does not mean you can apply it. Often it is about effort, lazy people can be smart with poor grades. However, good grades don't come from being stupid but could be grade inflation. My personal view about him after seeing the incident and subsequent comments from him is that he is an intelligent person with an immense ego who knows how to draw attention to himself for personal gain ala Miley Cyrus. or JUSTIN BIEBER? All we talk about in A&J's is the Biebs and the Miley
  10. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 01:38 PM) Hell no. I'm poor. Why don't you just sell a car?
  11. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 01:11 PM) Last I checked they didn't go undefeated. And for such a high powered offense, they sure didn't put up many more points in the playoffs games than the Seahawks did. Seahawks scored a total of 46 points against two top defenses. Broncos scored 50 against middle of the road defenses. Those handful of wounded ducks Peyton throws each game are much more likely to get picked by this pass D. You know, I could argue this, but what's the point? The fact is neither team has seen anything like the other. It should be a good game.
  12. QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 01:07 PM) Two blocks from my house... Sounds like a war zone out here. Stay safe
  13. QUOTE (woods of ypres @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 12:20 PM) Whoosh It was a joke, with the real reason in parentheses.
  14. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 11:46 AM) I'm not seeing that scenario. Cold weather game, where Peyton has a career 36% winning percentage, against a defense this stout? Not gonna happen. Reminds me of "The Greatest Show on Earth" Rams and the high powered, out-of-this-world Raiders in 2003. Both of those offenses were completely stymied by ridiculous defenses and this defense is better than the two involved in those games. And after playing insane defenses the last 5 weeks or so and then facing a mediocre defense with key injuries will bode well for Seattle's offense. EDIT: And after a ridiculously awesome career, Peyton and/or his team has managed to fail at the end of the season every single year except once And I don't see anyone stopping the Broncos offense. That offense is like something they have not seen before. No disrespect to the Saints, but the Broncos' offense is incredibly well balanced and versatile. And don't sell the Broncos' defense short. They held LaGarrette Blount - a guy who put up 166 yards and 4 TDs the week before - to 6 yards. Their rush defense is legit and they hit hard too. I think it'll be a good game. My prediction is 28-17 Broncos.
  15. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 11:45 AM) Who the hell are the White Sox? Don't you mean Red Sox?
  16. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 11:41 AM) Using one statement that has nothing to do with the other as some sort of excuse. That's rich. Some dude not dressed takes out the Seattle player on the sidelines and people are trying to deflect attention by bringing up things that are completely irrelevant. It's absurd. 49ers fans have been hilarious since Sunday night. It was a damn dirty play. The Seahawks are still dirty as s*** both on and off the field.
  17. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 11:38 AM) The Seahawks want to talk about a dirty play by the 49ers on the sideline. The team with most PED suspensions in the league. That's rich. I seriously hope Peyton just shreds them.
  18. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 11:36 AM) Why is MLB radio saying it's down to LA, Cubs, D-backs and Yankees? Because even though there was no point to it, the White Sox already retracted their bid. (because they're stupid)
  19. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 11:35 AM) Well, the last part's easy - they don't eat red meat. If you're having heart problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but some beef ain't one.
  20. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 11:27 AM) It looked brutal live but on the replay he hit James across the shoulder blades. He hit him on the upper back across his shoulders. Had he been turned around, he would have hit him under the facemask in the neck. You can also say the same thing about Ahmad Brooks' sack on Drew Brees and Dan Skuta's sack of Cam Newton. The NFL's penalty system is way, way, way too inconsistent right now and there are just bad calls all around. It wasn't why they lost, but the Niners got hosed that game.
  21. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 11:21 AM) This tool on the sideline should be getting more grief this week than Sherman. On that same exact play, Lockette clotheslined James too. Had James been facing forward rather than having his back turned, it would have been a penalty and would have put the 49ers 15 yards forward. I also said earlier that I thought that guy should be fired. Bare minimum, he will be reprimanded heavily.
  22. QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 10:25 AM) We come here for neither our own humility, or anyone else's. In fact, the reason for message boards is, if anything, seeking out quite the opposite. On both counts. Oh wow, much philosophy, so inspire
  23. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 10:15 AM) I'm still stoked that we managed to land Billy Koch Neal Cotts came along, so everything is OK now.
  24. Sqwert, no doing this if the Seahawks lose http://deadspin.com/49ers-fan-allegedly-sh...of-b-1505721518
  25. QUOTE (Dunt @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 09:28 AM) They just reported on the Score that Tanaka tweeted a decision has been made. I think we will hear today. No, he said he can't decide.
