Who willl win the Boras/Jay-Z agent war?
witesoxfan replied to caulfield12's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 11:12 PM) LOL, you think Beyonce needed her career furthered? They've been together 10 years. Yes, I think the fact that Jay-Z has as many connections as he does to help further her career was an influence. -
QUOTE (mataipaepae @ Nov 9, 2013 -> 02:20 PM) that's an opinion. I believe span to be an upgrade and someone that fits more of what we need at the top of the lineup to be more successful. also helps us more defensively. even you stated this. so how is that lateral? How do you figure he's an upgrade at the top of the order? Span put up a .327 OBP and was 20 of 26 on the base paths, while De Aza was at .323 and 20 of 28. Span is an upgrade defensively but also has nowhere near the power. Those cancel out or give an advantage to De Aza. Really, I don't see an upgrade in there, and the Sox have less control of Span. It's just not a move that makes a lot of sense.
-
QUOTE (mataipaepae @ Nov 9, 2013 -> 02:15 PM) what's wrong with moving ADA if spann comes? That's a lateral move. It doesn't add or take away anything except that you lose value overall because you'll give up more for Span than you'll get in return for Span.

QUOTE (mataipaepae @ Nov 9, 2013 -> 01:54 PM) we don't need glue guys? Really, no, not right now. They need guys they can build around who are young and under team control. Span is a guy you acquire if you have an outright weakness in CF and you're an 81-85 win talent team. Neither is the case for the Sox right now. He's a guy who can help push you over the top but won't do a ton by himself. It'd be like if the Sox were looking to trade for De Aza right now. Nobody would suggest that unless it were for very cheap. If they could get him for like Dylan Axelrod, yeah, sure, but they're going to look for a prospect or two. That's not what the Sox need to do.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 8, 2013 -> 08:30 PM) Yeah. The thing with him is that he doesn't even look good when he's hot. He just looks like he's running into some balls. He has never really seemed " dialed in" to me. Hits just fall in for a couple weeks at a time. How dare you suggest someone "not looking good" on a baseball field, everyone knows stathead junkies like you don't watch the games

QUOTE (mataipaepae @ Nov 9, 2013 -> 01:26 PM) the defensive upgrade makes it all worth it. span brings more speed to the table too. he is a table setter for the top of the lineup. and is much more consistant. Span doesn't do a lot with his speed though, and he makes about as many mistakes on the base paths as De Aza. He's an upgrade on defense for sure, but he's a glue guy, which is about the last thing the Sox need unless he came cheaply.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 06:25 PM) You don't think you're selling him a bit short? He basically (along with Sean Combs) defined the word entrepreneurial in the new media age. Plus, he landed Beyonce. Despite being worth $450-500 million, he's not the most handsome guy in the world. http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/226279 Yes, he's an incredible music producer and promoter, one of the best in the world. I'm sure the only reason Beyonce is with him is because of his looks and not to further her own career. -

Scott Boras is one of the top 5 agents in all of sports, and you can certainly make an argument that he is absolutely 100% the best agent. Jay-Z is a rapper. This is like saying "Who is going to be better, Guy who has done this for his entire career or new guy who you know from something else that is doing this now because it's easy money?" I mean, are you comparing Scott Boras and Gary Sheffield? -
QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 04:14 PM) Hudson is in the exact same, albeit worse position that Gavin Floyd. He just had a second TJ surgery, later than Floyd did, and has been a decent pitcher for only a season and a half. I don't think that he will be non-tendered, but it would be no surprise because there doesn't seem to be a whole lot to be gained there. Hudson is still going to be extremely cheap though. Having pitched just 45.1 innings in the last 2 seasons, he is going to cost next to nothing in arbitration and, while it's true that he's a considerable injury risk, he's also still under team control for the next 3 years. Best case scenario, he's able to come back and help your team come August or so of next year. Otherwise, you evaluate where he's after after next season, and make a decision on him from there. If it were Lucas Harrell who had just torn his UCL for the second time in 2 years, you'd non-tender him in a second. EDIT: The moral of this story is that "talent will always get second chances." The reason a psycho like Milton Bradley was able to stick around as long as he did was because the dude had a considerable amount of talent and you could put up with the headache if he acted semi-normal and gave your team a chance to win. The second he stopped producing and his talent was no longer evident, he was out of the game in a heartbeat.
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 03:56 PM) The way he can take a walk and field he really doesn't need to hit that much to be a productive player. When he is bad though, he is so, so bad. In 356 PAs this year, he put up a .167/.293/.257/.550 line. That's like worse than Keppinger.
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 03:44 PM) For the record, this is Keith Law's assertion. He did the write up for ESPN. And I like Keith Law too, but the dude is norotiously pessimistic when it comes to grading prospects. Unless they are a top, top talent, he is going to find a crticism and say "expect a utility infielder" or "a middle inning arm." His love for Jose Iglesias was a bit weird though.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 03:14 PM) I mean I don't think they're going to sweat it if they have to keep him without figuring the starter out, but a million bucks is a million bucks. I'd be surprised if Hahn wouldn't want to get it sorted out first if at all possible. Frankly, Flowers is a JAG, but he's easier to pay $1 mill to Flowers to be a JAG than it is $4 million to John Buck to do the same thing. The only thing Buck could conceivably bring to the table is veteran leadership.

Chris Beck was a consensus top 5-10 pick prior to the draft 2 years ago. He got too bulky, lost velocity, lost break on his pitches, and suddenly he fell to the 2nd round. If he gets back to form, he could turn into a top of the rotation starter. Same thing with Anthony Ranaudo and Lucas Giolito too.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 01:51 PM) God would it be great to get Mitchell back from the dead. Wonder if the dry heat and the straightening of breaking balls helps Mitchell out in Arizona. He hits down there and doesn't hit anywhere else. Maybe he was hurt and has gotten healthy. He's an enigma.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 02:44 PM) Flowers might get $1 million, and even if you offer him arb and he wins, can't you release him during spring training and pay him 20% or some sort? If Jarrod Saltilamaccia is worth 4 years and $36-40 million, Tyler Flowers is probably worth $1 million for 1 year or at least $200k to see where he's at this spring. I'm no fan, but he has shown he's a decent back up who can hit homers. I agree with this 100%. I also don't think there's any real noticeable difference between Phegley and Flowers and, while Flowers is no longer eligible to be optioned, Phegley still is. Being smart and maximizing the efficiency of your resources is also a part of the game, regardless of whether or not Phegley has anything more to prove at the AAA level.
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 01:36 PM) How does a player qualify to be a non tender canidate? I see Tyler Flowers is a non tender canidate for the Sox and there are some pitchers I would be interested in on cheap one year deals with option years. Johnny Venters, and Daniel Hudson I could see the Sox go after I they do get non tendered. They are a player the team will not want to pay who are still under team control but not contractually obligated to their remaining salary. Dan Hudson won't be non-tendered. He's far too valuable a commodity for the DBacks. Flowers could be, but there's not a lot of harm in bringing him back considering he's going to make close to the league minimum and is one of 2 "major league" catchers the White Sox have. The most likely candidate is probably Beckham, but in this day and age, there's not a lot of use in non-tendering players because someone will almost always give something for a player like that. Perhaps a marginal player in arbitration years who no long has an option that had a serious injury would be non-tendered to save money (Gavin Floyd if he qualified would fit this criteria). Other candidates are guys that really have no future in the organization that the team will no longer want to pay. This pertains very well to Brent Morel, but there are others as well.

2013-14 off season player movement thread

There are a lot of scouts who believe Franco is far too aggressive at the plate, having a tendency to swing at everything and there are concerns regarding his ability to lay off pitches once he gets to pitchers who are more skilled. It's awesome to see that kind of raw power out of a 20 year old, and he'd easily be a top 3 prospect in the White Sox system (if not the top prospect), but that does not mean there still is not considerable risk. Regarding Brown, that simply wouldn't happen. The Phillies would be hesitant to trade Brown straight up for Quintana, let alone including a prospect like Franco in too. As I said, if a trade happens, it'd probably be something along the lines of Quintana, De Aza, and (fill in the blank) for Brown, Biddle, and Franco, or Biddle/Franco, or who knows. They might take give Brown straight up for Quintana, but they certainly won't do Franco and Brown for Quintana. He's good; he's not David Price good. -

QUOTE (scs787 @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 11:57 AM) Swap out Biddle for Franco and I'll be ecstatic. No way. I like Franco, but he is far too risky a prospect to acquire for Quintana straight up, and frankly, the idea of getting Domonic Brown straight up for Quintana seems silly too. There's a match and my initial hypothetical package that comes to mind is Quintana and De Aza for Brown, Biddle, and Franco, but that's too much from the Phillies end. Still, there could definitely be pieces that move here. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 11:46 AM) More interesting is the part about the Phils and Price. Could that be a package that would be offered for Quintana? He isn't quite on Price's level, but he is also under team control for 5 more years, 2 of them pre-arb. The Sox had interest in Maikel Franco previously with the Phils also interested in De Aza, and these two have worked together before. There could certainly be a match here. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 11:23 AM) Amazing old photographs that have been colorized: http://imgur.com/a/YiOLx I'd really like to know how they did this. Ummm they just reprinted the photos without the old-timey hues, duhhhh

QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 6, 2013 -> 11:55 PM) Dolphins' GM told Martin's agent that Martin should punch Incognito the day before Martin walked out... This just got weirder: http://profootballzone.com/nfl/report-jeff...chie-incognito/ No that's just piece of s*** Jeff Ireland being a piece of s***.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 08:41 AM) ESPN scouting report on Turner "Turner has elite speed and should be able to stick at shortstop, but there might not be much offensive upside. " So you are basing your entire opinion of Trea Turner on 1 scouting report. I can probably find scouting reports that didn't like Tulowitzki or Longoria or Price or Sale, or were overly pessimistic on them. We can let everything get sorted out this coming season. If he comes out, hits .400 or whatever again, shows soft and quick hands in the field, and shows an arm, you can bet he's a candidate at 3. Here's this too from scout.com: http://www.scout.com/2/1292387.html Of course, none of this matters now.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 08:24 AM) MLB Future Salary Obligations by Team This is a nice graphic for displaying each team's future salary obligations for the next ten years. So the LA teams only owe $900 million in future salary, no big deal -
QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 6, 2013 -> 10:34 PM) You'd still prefer Beck to Bassit though right? Upside wise, yes. He needs to continue striking guys out as he was doing in AA. He could be a guy that really explodes this year or simply falls by the way side.
-
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Nov 6, 2013 -> 11:24 AM) Turner's scouting report sounds a lot like Tim Andersons, so not sure I would think about taking him at 3. Gatewood fits in the mold of Hawkins and Zapata, being athletic with big power, but we are pretty loaded with those type of guys (all power, no contact). Jackson could be intriguing if he could play third. I think the pick is one of those three, but a lot of time to go. I would like to see Jeren Kendall in the second round. Anyone that makes contact first is appealing to me. A plus defender at SS with plus plus speed, a plus bat, and the ability to develop power is not a bad choice at 3.
