  1. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 19, 2013 -> 05:45 AM) Thought you meant the reliever and I was terrified for a moment. Yes, this is the reliever. He is just not the fat one that was acquired by trading Brandon Allen. This is the shortstop that played for the Royals who has been converted to a reliever.
  2. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 05:57 PM) Seems like those who were pointing at Treyvon for being a thug were pointing at the wrong guy all along. It's not impossible that they were both s***heads.
  3. Even so, it is incredibly illegal to hold downfield. If it's not pass interference, it's holding . That should have been called. Also, my opinion of Aqib Talib did not change. One of the dirtiest, s***tiest players in the game.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 04:54 PM) How about if you use their revenues? We really have no idea how accurate Forbes is, but it has been SOP for the White Sox to say every dime that comes in goes out, then say they are at their budget limit, only to add payroll later. Maybe it is silly to base a teams' ability to add payroll based on their Forbes value, but it is equally as silly to base it on what the team is telling you. Do you understand what a budget is? Have you ever heard of the term over-budget?
  5. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 16, 2013 -> 03:18 PM) Just because someone strikes out too much, doesn't mean you have to think a guy who rarely strikes out is good. It is not being inconsistent. It isn't mutually exclusive. There are people who don't like pitchers who don't throw hard. Are they then locked into thinking every hard thrower is good? The problem with the Greg bashers is you rush to criticize everything he posts before you actually think about it. Except that we do think about it. De Aza, Ramirez, Dunn, Viciedo, Beckham, Quintana, Santiago, Reed, and whoever have all sucked and need to be shipped out. Pierzynski and Konerko have done no wrong. Explain that. Explain wanting to trade Adam Dunn, eating salary, and resigning Paul Konerko. Maybe, just maybe, we actually do think about we're saying, we don't pigeonhole players, we all have different opinions of players, and we all respect why we generally do and do not like other players, but we do not respect why greg likes players because he states "trade Dunn, he sucks!; release Keppinger, he's a terrible!; resign Konerko because he's Konerko and how could you not like Konerko?" Generally speaking, people have some sort of objectivity towards other players. Greg misses that boat more often than not. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 11:29 PM) Amen to Dick Allen! and see above
  6. QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 09:26 PM) That Carlos Ruiz contract just made the catcher market look kinda scary. Trading for a catcher seems like a much better idea now, Salty has to be looking for 4 years and at least $40M now right? No thanks We have been talking about Saltalamacchia signing for 4/$40 for about a month now. Ruiz's contract does nothing to change that. He's a good player and it's going to cost a lot to sign him. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 19, 2013 -> 08:01 AM) how much does it suck that the moronic spending Phillies are setting the market Y U NO SAY GIANTS AFTER HUNTER PENCE SIGNING?
  7. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 04:16 PM) You're the one saying they should sweat $10M not me. If you have $10,000 in your checking account, do you ever just say to yourself "I don't need anything but I may as well spend $100 today?"
  8. QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Nov 16, 2013 -> 01:05 PM) But how would you fare in the swimsuit competition? I have heard that greg is the favorite in that one and looks great in a banana hammock
  9. QUOTE (chisoxfan310 @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 03:16 PM) Daniel Murphy has seen time in the outfield, third base, and first base over the years. I think he has primarily been a second baseman the past few seasons though. I recall him being pretty terrible overall in the outfield. Misread balls and routinely had balls going over his head. Viciedo looked more competent.
  10. In other words, DiMichele was 1 for 10 on balls that stayed in the park.
  11. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 03:08 PM) If Mitchell broke out, that would be absolutely huge. I remember how high everyone was on him, especially in that one spring training, until he had his injury. He looked so unbelievably good. Calm, strong, long, confident swing. It looked like he knew what he was doing at the plate. Then he got hurt and it was just like "ok, now what?"
  12. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 02:14 PM) It does at first, because of how damn sharp they are. And when I mean sharp, I mean actually for really real razor sharp. By comparison, other "razor blades" shouldn't be called razor anythings, because they're dull and tend to pull hair vs slicing through it like butter. It's so sharp, that you can put the razor against your cheek and allow the weight of the razor itself to shave you...as a matter of fact, pressing down is how you cut your face off. Now that I've been doing it for a few years it's about the same. The reason I actually tried these was because traditional disposables and electrics gave me severe burn/bumps. I have sensitive skin on my face/neck, and this solved that problem for me. I am going to have to look into this
  13. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 03:02 PM) Isn't Murphy a 3B who was forced to 2B with the presence of David Wright? I would take him. Not sure what it would cost for his last two arb years as he will probably make around $6M this season and who knows next season. The Mets are also looking at moving D'Arnaud from previous reports, so maybe a deal that could fill two holes. Why on earth would they move D'Arnaud? And frankly, how is he any more of a sure thing or worthy prospect compared to Josh Phegley? They were basically the same exact player this year. Unless that were cheap, I'd stay away. Murphy intrigues me, but I think I'd prefer someone like him who can be the first guy off the bench who can also play all over. Someone like Kelly Johnson perhaps.
  14. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 03:01 PM) I think we should look at the Sox as a billion dollar business and not a mom and pop outfit. Because mom and pop outfits routinely spend $10 million
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 02:12 PM) Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS 26m jeff niemann has elected free agency after being outrighted off rays 40-man roster I don't know how healthy he is, but he would make for a great pickup for the Sox. He's a perfectly average pitcher who was solid when he pitched last year and he could provide a relatively nice return package.
  16. My car is worth $22,000. I charge 25,000 people 1 cent for 3 hour rides in it. Fuel costs are variable, but are by no means cheap. I need to make significant repairs constantly. I also have to consistently make payments towards the car as well. And you really believe it makes sense that I can just spend $220 on a whim because my car is worth $22,000?
  17. There's that, but the Sox minor league system also improve a ton over the past season too.
  18. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 01:11 PM) This was really driven by the roster. This has me thinking about Ozzie and his "Sunday lineups". I don't disagree, and it's not something you can fault Ventura for - was he really going to use platoons whereever the Sox had a weak hitter? The A's did platoon a lot, and it doesn't mean that Bob Melvin is some supergenius manager but that Billy Beane and company provided him the roster to use platoons like that. The concept behind that is depth is king. Get a bunch of players together who are all pretty good at hitting the opposite hand thrower and make sure you have a good defensive team and you can do a lot. Keppinger and Gillaspie should be a strict platoon next year and if it is, I bet the Sox get pretty solid production out of the 3B spot. If Jordan Danks is on the roster, he should play a bit more for Viciedo and Garcia against righties. Know your platoons though - De Aza is actually a better career hitter against lefties than he is righties (though that wasn't the case prior to this year as he had a great year against lefties and a poor year against righties). You take baby steps and you'll get there eventually.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 12:24 PM) What that tells me is..."If he can't hit while DHing...then the guys who want him dumped unceremoniously are right". Yes. There is no point in eating money for him to not play on the team while getting no value back, but I am ready to be done with Dunn. It appeared to be a perfect signing prior to the 2011 season and it has just been a nightmare deal.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 12:16 PM) It's also worth noting that in the fangraphs world...the awfulness of his defense when he was at 1b overwhelmed the positive contribution he made with the bat by a whole lot. This is also true, though this can fluctuate a bit as well.
  21. QUOTE (ptatc @ Nov 16, 2013 -> 04:30 PM) The platoon stats is misleading. It's not that Oakland platooned positions more, it's that they had the L vs. R advantage more often with the set lineup. This is a function of the players. The two players with the most at bats were switch hitters. This means the had the L vs. R platoon 100% of the time. Also the rest of the positions were evenly split between LH and RH. Robin did not have this advantage with available players. He had very very LH to put in a starting lineup. The A's still did platoon like crazy. They had 7 lefties get at least 100 PAs and only 1 - Brandon Moss - had 500 PAs (505). Lowrie and Crisp are switch hitters, so they can play all the time, and you are right, that's not a platoon, but it's smart to have switch hitters, especially because it does kill that platoon advantage that opposing pitchers have. The Sox have 2 switch hitters receive ABs this year - Hector Gimenez and Leury Garcia. The other two to receive a ton of playing time were Donaldson (one of the best players in baseball this year) and Cespedes (getting paid a bajillion dollars, need to play him). The A's were one of the best teams in the league and they still had 16 guys with at least 120 PAs. The Sox had 13. Only 2 players on the A"s received 600+ PAs - Lawrie and Donaldson. The Sox had 3 guys get 600 this year - Dunn, Ramirez, and De Aza - and save an injury to Konerko, that likely would have been 4 guys. A deeper and better bench would be a really good thing for the Sox to add.
  22. It is worth mentioning that Dunn was still far, far more productive when he was actually on the field compared to DHing. At this point, it's pretty impossible to ignore.
  23. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 09:39 AM) I'm glad it's just an idea because I'm not sure if there is any proof of it. De Aza in CF was even worse than Viciedo in left. Yes, because (as I recall) he is incredibly uncomfortable in CF. That's why he'd move from CF to LF with Wise subbing in for him in 2012. The sample sizes in the corners are small, but in his career, his UZR in CF is -0.3 (and the UZR/150 is -0.4), while it's -0.1/-0.1 in LF and it's 5.0/35.0 in RF (which puts his overall value higher in the corners). In 2013, he provided 0.1/1.0 in LF and -2.7/-4.1 in CF. Maybe good is the wrong word, but he is a far better defensively in LF than he is in CF.
  24. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 09:31 AM) Or get some players who don't have to remember since guys like Viciedo and De Aza will have a hard time even being average outfielders ever. I stand by the idea that De Aza is a really good defensive LF.
  25. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 08:57 AM) Oh, not the let's get rid of Cutler for McCown talk. I thought Tolzien looked really good yesterday for a 0 TD, 3 INT performance. There are obviously some really poor throws in there, but for making his first career start and second appearance, he showed off a great arm
