Sox sign Gordon Beckham, designate Viciedo for Assignment
witesoxfan replied to flavum's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 01:24 PM) Wow, now that one shocks me. Only have to eat $750K and if someone claims him for the full balance, the Sox are off the hook entirely. -

That escalated quickly. -
QUOTE (shysocks @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 12:57 PM) Not trying to turn this into a Viciedo thread, so I'll rephrase: If Garcia age 23-25 looks like Viciedo from 23-25, it will be a bad situation. Agreed. Garcia may be the biggest question mark on the team next year. I won't go as far as saying he's the difference between the playoffs or not, but if he plays well it's going to be a whole lot easier to overlook a few other holes.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 12:46 PM) If he never played for the Sox, I'd say it's a good fit. But with his past expectations/failures, I just don't like it. This is exactly how I view it. I was just thinking about him today too, which is funny. Really, if he were brought in as a backup, I'd have no problem with this move at all. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 12:32 PM) Has Lynch had any run ins with the law? Don't think so, so in the grand scheme of things, I don't really care if he doesn't talk to the media. Lynch, historically, gets penalized more than guys who commit serious crimes, etc. Its pathetic. I always used to say the same thing about TO. Might have been an ass but he was better than a lot of other guys in the league who were disgusting pieces of trash. TO just had a big mouth. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 12:34 PM) He had a misdemeanor gun possession charge in California in 2009 and was suspended 3 games. In 2008 his drivers license was revoked after a hit & run incident. Blew a 0.10 DUI in California in 2012. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/...ult-allegation/ -
QUOTE (shysocks @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 12:18 PM) http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/avisail-gar...p-on-potential/ Hey, here's a depressing article comparing Garcia to Viciedo! The big "but," of course: Just because one guy has become a miserable failure doesn't mean they all do. I don't think we can say that Viciedo has become a miserable failure at this point, just that he has been a miserable failure thus far. The guy is still talented as hell and relatively young, so he has time to put it all together. I just don't think it's going to be with the White Sox.

The big thing to think about is that these are subjective rankings and it would stand to reason that Law values having high end talent - I'm guessing his top 4 for the Sox are Rodon, Anderson, Montas, and Adams - as opposed to having an abundance of depth. Kylie McDaniel has touched on a lot of this at FanGraphs - is a system better having four potential 3-6 WAR players throughout the minors with little beyond that or is it better to have ten or so 2-4 WAR players, some of whom won't play full time and some who will likely play in the minors, thus limiting their overall value but all the while maintaining value both as a trade chip and as a plug and play option? It's a valid point and is worthy of debate. Typically I'd take the elite talent because it's a lot harder to find and accumulate, but there's no wrong answer.

QUOTE (Douglas Rome @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 10:03 AM) if I had any wishes, catcher, 2nd and 3rd base and then we'd be done. thanks, douglas They already have guys in place for those positions and there really aren't any other players available at this juncture to justify trading any other prospects for them. They may add another infielder or two, but my gut says they would be minor league contracts. For the most part, what you see is what you get.

QUOTE (LDF @ Jan 27, 2015 -> 10:26 PM) Michael Ohlman i think just became available .... should the sox be interested??? http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/01/orio...assignment.html http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/p...traderumors.com No they should not. QUOTE (LDF @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 09:43 AM) but with Michael Ohlman, all he needs is to be added to the 40 man roster. let him continue to develop in the minors. Michael Ohlman would be a waste of a 40-man roster spot. He'd probably be at least 7th on the catching depth chart right now behind Flowers, Soto, Brantly, Kottaras, Nieto, and Smith.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 27, 2015 -> 08:09 PM) This is essentially saying "If Kershaw, Felix, Scherzer, etc. start sucking, they are hard to replace." Exactly. "If those completely unexpected circumstances come to fruition, then the Sox will struggle." Well yeah.

FutureSox Top Prospects, Preseason 2015

I have similar thoughts to NSS about Mitchell. Big time arms are nice, but you have to show some ability to maintain at least a shred of command or control to get anything more than a mention. I did have Mitchell in at 28. There's a lot to like about his tools, but you need more from his ability to actually pitch before we see him rise. If he develops command - that's not a small task, as there are many, many guys who flame out simply because they cannot do that - he could be a fast and/or big riser in the rankings, but until that point, it's wait and see. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 27, 2015 -> 11:26 AM) With Sanburn, I gotta look at what he's done. 0 starts last year, decent but not spectacular performance in high A ball last year. Not exceptionally young for that level. Yes, there's talent there. Yes there's plenty of room to grow, but there's like 10 guys in the system I can say that about. He's one of the better ones, but until I see it on the field he's a reliever with a lot to learn. This was a lot of my thought process behind Sanburn. I had Ynoa higher than him and it's because I feel he has a higher ceiling, and I had Ynoa at 20. If Sanburn comes out and blows people away next year or he ends up being a potential starting pitcher, then he'd rise, but I just couldn't help but view him as a fringe top 30 guy. -

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 27, 2015 -> 10:55 AM) his "scouting" of Chris Sale was embarrassing. I believe he said all of his offspeed pitches were average or below average, specifically his slider I have admittedly shoddy memory on this subject, but my recollection was that he didn't like or didn't know about the sweeping slider. He thought he was fastball/change with a show me slider. I am also not a Keith Law fanboy by any stretch of the imagination and I prefer the opinions of many others over him, but there are most definitely worse minor league guys out there than Keith Law. -
How can the White Sox possibly lose money?

QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Jan 27, 2015 -> 09:24 AM) Yes I would just like to point out that you are replying to a post from 2011 in which Soxbadger asked whomever "if they'd like to run in the negative." Had they done so starting at that point in time, the Sox would not have been able to have the offseason they did just under 4 years later. That's why you don't run in the negative. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 27, 2015 -> 09:50 AM) Chris Sale and Jose Abreu, 2 White Sox mistakes according to Keith Law. If there is no grudge, it shows he does lack a bit of the expertise he believes he has. I don't know what he said about Jose Abreu, but on Chris Sale, the information he had on him was that he was a lanky pitcher with a fastball/change up combo and he didn't know about his slider who projected as a reliever. He did not believe he would make it as a starter. Since that point, he's eaten his words. -
QUOTE (SCCWS @ Jan 26, 2015 -> 05:06 PM) Abreu has a sophmore slump and LaRoche can't adjust to AL pitching. The front office is not going to have guys on the bench or in AAA who can make up for the drop in run production. Injuries can totally change a team's success but so can off-years by your star players. Bench players are usally guys who can fill in for short periods. But if Sale has control issues and ends up a .500 pitcher next year, pretty tough to pull him and have a suitable replacement. If Sale has control issues? What? Chris Sale has NEVER had control issues.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 27, 2015 -> 09:38 AM) What was the beef with Law? I believe this stems from the idea that Law was in the Blue Jays front office shortly after the Sirotka trade went down and he felt the Sox wronged the Blue Jays and, as a result, has held a grudge against the Sox since that point. I'm of the opinion that Keith Law has no obvious bias against the White Sox, doesn't care about that scenario, and, instead, didn't like the White Sox minor league system over the previous 10 years and he had a lot of harsh things to say about it, which many people here took as "Keith Law hates everything White Sox." -

New MLB Commish suggests ban on shifts
witesoxfan replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Diamond Club
Dave Cameron weighs in: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-problem...em-with-shifts/ I like his take in basically saying that the biggest issue right now is not guys hitting the ball to other defenders but that they are striking out at an absurd rate. Guys striking out is not a big deal on a micro level, but at a macro level, it's getting out of hand, and that's the biggest reason why we're seeing the numbers fall. That's not to say that there may not be background factors working towards an increasing strikeout percentage - namely steroids - but that the surface reasoning is that shifts have much less to deal with repressed run scoring and a lack of contact has more to do with it. -

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jan 25, 2015 -> 11:59 PM) How does a failed drug test include alcohol? Makes no damn sense. As part of his treatment, he was told not to drink. He drank. Thus, it is illegal. If people are arrested for DUI, they can be asked to take twice-daily sobriety tests. I know a guy that had to do it for like 2-3 months, and then he was asked to stay sober beyond that too (and if found intoxicated, it could land him in hot water, though they wouldn't necessarily track him daily).
