Sox V. A's - Buehrle V. Cahill

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 10:09 PM) You're better than that...you know we're not going to be signing a big name player (unless it's Konerko). Sox could sign Mientkiewicz. That'd be a big name. -
QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 09:15 PM) UGH.... The Rudy dream is nearly over. A big f*** you goes out to Portland. Would have been a pretty damn good fit here. Only interesting thing is the deal is "non" guaranteed so there is hope. But wow... Scalabrine? Chicago does have a big Irish population

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 08:56 PM) That's his problem this season... Seriously, the guy needs a change of scenery. He's loaded with potential and would be a good fit. Buy low on him as he projects to improve. I think Kenny and Coop have done what they can with Gavin and it's time to cut ties. How is trading Gavin Floyd buying low? The thought behind buying low is that the guy doesn't cost a lot to acquire. Gavin Floyd is a pretty f***ing good.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 05:30 PM) Bah, I'd be saying the exact same thing if I were in Buffalo and a competent GM. You insist you're happy with the guy and you don't need to trade him up until the moment he's gone. Tipping your hand is silly. Of course...an incompetent GM could also say the same thing...if he actually meant it. It's probably a bit of both, but it seems so much like it's the latter. This is an organization that had glaring holes both on offense and defense but actually had a decent duo of running backs, and then took a running back with their first round pick. They quite clearly had no good option at QB and 3 mediocre options at the very best, and didn't take a QB in the draft until the 7th round (and subsequently cut him). I don't think anyone in the organization has a clue right now. For whatever reason, they didn't want to give Shanahan GM duties when it seemed as though that was the only thing holding him back from coming to Buffalo. If they have Shanahan as the coach instead of Chan Gailey, it's entirely possible that Donovan McNabb would have been more receptive to Buffalo in that scenario, and at that point they can try to address the OLine issue with the #9 pick or trade down (and there probably would have been interest in that pick considering picks 11-13 were all traded on draft day) to try and get more help overall. A lot of that is hindsight and conjecture, but the Bills just seemingly keep making bad decision after bad decision, and it's really no wonder why they are viewed as the current laughingstock of the league.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 04:57 PM) Tom Brady's safety blanket Kevin Faulk has a torn ACL and is probably gone for the year. Packers, Patriots...which of you wants Marshawn Lynch? Come on, just give up a draft pick. No, don't you understand? The Bills need Marshawn Lynch because they are ahead of the curve and now a days every great football team has 3 capable running backs. They don't want to trade Lynch even though he's unhappy, the Bills are going nowhere, and they have two others who can more than fill his spot.

I don't like LaRussa as a manager, but he'd bring Dave Duncan with him. I like Cooper a lot, but Dave Duncan is an absolutely phenomenal pitching coach, and he would work magic with this pitching staff. Duncan would be worth it by himself.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 04:05 PM) Maybe it's from reading Soxtalk so much but my feeling was the Sox would let him go cause he's so worthless. I never even thought the Sox would want compensation. I figure after reading Soxtalk every day, they'd welcome somebody taking Ozzie off their hands and then they could get LaRussa or Torre. As far as money, don't all managers make about the same amount of loot? They can afford Ozzie. Most managers don't make a lot of money, unless they're Torre or LaRussa. Ozzie made $1.1 mill in 2007, and I'm sure he's seen his yearly salary increase slightly each year, so he's probably making around $1.5 mill now a days from the Sox and would need a pay increase to go to Florida, which is simple economics (unless he values being close to Ozney more than money). Fredi Gonzalez, who was just fired this year, signed a 3 year deal for around $2 mill, which is under $700K per season. Do you really think the Marlins would want to almost triple the amount of money they are paying their manager? That's money they then can't spend on their first round pick, and they'd probably end up drafting a guy because he is signable. And either way, just because Soxtalk doesn't like Ozzie doesn't mean the people in charge hate him. There was hearsay earlier this year that suggested that Williams wanted to fire Ozzie but had that decision vetoed by Reinsdorf. Reinsdorf likes Ozzie. He won't want him to go anywhere else.

Floyd shut down unless he is "200% healthy." Tony Pena will fill his rotation spot for the rest of the season. http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/...estionable.html http://twitter.com/cst_sox/status/25092859888 Cowley also tweeted that Floyd didn't feel it was serious.

At the end of the day, they're still grown men and they make their own decisions. If my father was arrested for a DUI tomorrow, I wouldn't suddenly go out and drive drunk thinking that it's a completely justifiable action simply because he's been a great role model all of my life. Ron Washington admitted to cocaine use in the offseason and there were people on here that wanted him to step down as manager because of it and part of that reason is because that is the one clubhouse in the entire MLB where admitting something like that is taboo because their best player was a huge cocaine addict, yet it hasn't affected Hamilton (because he is surrounded by other people who keep him away from that kind of stuff) nor the rest of their clubhouse considering they're going to make the playoffs for the first time in 10+ years. LaRussa was a moron for driving, especially when he was as drunk as he was. If you want to indict anyone, indict the entire Cardinals organization for adhering to the type of organizational philosophy that condones drinking and driving and allowing it to continue, but then I'd praise them, because I seem to recall that they were one of the organizations that first banned alcohol from locker rooms as well, and (unless I'm totally spacing something off) they've been pretty damn good over the past several years as well.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 12:32 AM) And the fact it makes sense. It's obvious the Marlins will offer Ozzie. Why wouldn't he take it? Much more peaceful down there where nobody cares bout baseball. And he'll get his NL ball all he wants. Why would the Marlins offer him a job? They are a notoriously cheap organization looking to save a buck in any manner they can. To hire Ozzie, they'd have to either get permission from the White Sox or, similar to what the Rays did with Lou Piniella, "trade" for Ozzie Guillen. Do you really think the White Sox would "trade" Ozzie Guillen to the Marlins? What you are suggesting is absurd, and if Ozzie Guillen becomes the manager of the Marlins, it will be because he was fired. He can't just leave and go to the Marlins or he will be taken to court by the White Sox for breach of contract.

For the White Sox to outright win the division, they will have to go 12-0 in their final 12 games and the Twins will have to go 0-12. SO YOU'RE TELLING ME THERE'S A CHANCE

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 07:31 PM) I agree about the tailspin. Either Kenny or Ozzie needs to take a hit for this season. and when you're comparing the curveballs and ERAs of Floyd and Gio, don't forget to compare their salaries. Williams is such a genius that he traded this kid twice. Once wasn't enough. Do you really think that Gio Gonzalez would have an ERA below 4 (let alone the 3.47 he's at) pitching half of his games for the White Sox? Surprise surprise, he's been phenomenal at home (2.70 with a completely unsustainable .229 BABIP) and a bit more human on the road (4.22 ERA, a somewhat unlucky but closer to reality .322 BABIP, and 1.44 WHIP). I would say his road splits are closer to his natural talent level than his overall numbers indicate because he's pitching in a great pitching environment for half of his games. The first time he traded Gio Gonzalez, he got Jim Thome. I'd say the Sox won that one. The time he traded for Gio Gonzalez, he also got Gavin Floyd, and gave up Freddy Garcia. I'd say the Sox won that one. The second time he traded Gio Gonzalez, he got Nick Swisher. He had the right intentions, but that trade eventually ended up as terrible. I also like that you want to compare salaries for some reason. According to FanGraphs WAR calculation, Gavin Floyd has been the 18th best pitcher in the majors this year. Gavin Floyd is good, and he's dirt cheap. At the very least, you could have said something along the lines of comparing Buehrle and Gonzalez's salary, or Peavy and Gonzalez's salary. Gavin Floyd has been everything the Sox have asked for and more.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 07:28 PM) Morel. Morel. Morel. Better fielder by miles. Better control of the strike zone. Will hit for better average. Looks like a better baserunner. Until Viciedo learns to lay off bad pitches, he's got no shot to be a big league hitter. and his best position is DH. Another guy Kenny Williams overpaid to acquire. Viciedo is 21 and more than held his own against MLB pitching. He's got a vast amount of raw talent. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the White Sox signing Dayan Viciedo. I wish they'd do it far more often.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 06:58 PM) I have a question for those in college: when are you too old for freshman girls? I almost feel bad.....almost. I don't think you can ever be too "old" for freshman, but there is no way I could be with the stereotypical freshman girl at this point in time. I would say that if you get called a creepy old dude, you are probably too old. That happened to me...as a sophomore.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 06:48 PM) Fastballs are blowing him away. His bat is slow. Maybe its technical, maybe its a lack of juice and age. There are some here that think the Sox may want to give Manny a contract for next season, according to Gonzales, there is no chance. He's been with the Sox for 3 weeks and still doesn't have his "timing". I'm thinking he's not the MVP type hitter he used to be. Anybody who expected him to be an MVP type hitter was fooling themselves from the beginning, but there is plenty of reason to believe he can be an effective hitter once again. If the Sox could sign him for about how much he made during the month of September for an entire year, he would be well worth the gamble. However, I don't believe that will be the case, and I think he may very well end up retiring.

Brian Anderson's future...? Thought this was funny.

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Sep 2, 2010 -> 11:41 AM) I think that the patience level of the Sox is directly tied to KWs insatiable desire to field a competitive team each and every year. KW doesn't believe in rebuilding, and he doesn't have time for a prospect to develop. I remember Joe Crede used to suck at the plate earlier in his career, but the Sox were patient and allowed him to figure things out and become valuable. Same with Jon Garland. When the Sox won it in 2005 and they traded Rowand, I thought to myself there's no way that the Sox can afford to let Brian Anderson develop and stay competitive at the same time. I didn't want them to either. Once you get a taste of winning, you don't ever want to go back. Then that's a problem that needs to be addressed, because you have to give prospects time to develop. If you don't, you end up with $90 million tied up between 14 players when your budget is $95 million and you get forced to trade players you didn't want to trade in the first place. -
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 10:21 AM) And that has what to do with the draft exactly? You guys make 2-3 million seem like 20-30 million, with Beckham and Sale, I'm confident JR realizes you can't go bargain hunting in the 1st round. If you sign a Type A free agent, you lose either your first or second round pick. The Sox aren't going to have money to spend in free agency to lose a draft pick, but if they did, it would be a hell of a lot nicer to lose their second round pick between selections 50-65 than it would be to lose their first round choice that's between 16-30.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 09:37 AM) Who wants more Kenny and Ozzie drama? Well, here it is. Ozzie wants his boy Kotsay in the lineup and hates the lack of flexibility an actual DH saddles him with. “Kenny and Jerry [Reinsdorf] never get involved with my lineup,” Guillen said. “They never did and I don’t think they ever will. I hope not. You never know. But all of a sudden you don’t play Manny for three or four days and he’s healthy … we bring this guy here to play every day. [...] By bringing aboard Ramirez, Williams was essentially forcing Guillen’s hand with lineup decisions. Or at least that’s how Guillen seems to look at it. “In the meanwhile it’s hard for me to make the lineup every day because of that situation,” Guillen said about Ramirez’s presence. http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/white-sox/...ausing-friction If you believe WAR can be taken from the statsheet and put into the standings page, then Ozzie Guillen is the reason this team is 10 games back instead of 2 games back, because Jim Thome has been worth 3.4 WAR, whereas Mark Kotsay has been worth -0.8. Perhaps you can say that Thome isn't going to be worth 3.4 here, but even if he is only worth 2 in Chicago, that's still a 6-7 game difference in the standings, and though it's more difficult, 3-4 games can still be made up in a 2 week period.

QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Sep 19, 2010 -> 10:34 PM) If it wasn't for his craftiness on certain slides, that 76% would and should be much lower. There has been at least 7-8 times he was actually caught stealing a base, but avoided it either by slides or the SS/2B dropping the ball. His OBP as I've said many times is inflated (people will point oh, he's hitting lower in average... well then that will balance out by his career year in HBP) and don't get me started on his power. To me, he's declining.. and I hope the sox can deal him this off-season... plus I've always hated his game as a player. Sliding is a talent, and if it's his craftiness that has increased his stolen base percentage, than that's to his credit and shouldn't be taken away from him. And, while his OBP is higher due to a career high in his HBP, his BABIP is also 25 points lower than his career average. Some of that is correlated to USCF not being a great park to hit for average, but part of it is attributable to bad luck as well. Juan Pierre isn't a great player, but really, he's been everything the Sox could have asked for and he's been a good player. He'd be better suited hitting 9th than 1st, but he's almost positively going to be worth what the Sox are paying him overall, he's almost certainly going to be worth his salary next season ($5 mill), and he fills a spot in the lineup and brings a different offensive dimension to the club, for whatever that is worth. I think it's more likely that he ends up putting up something closer what he did in his first 2 years in LA next season - .290/.330/.345/.675 with great defense - which will probably end up being worth about 1.5 WAR, give or take based on his defensive performance of course (but it should be good), and he'll be a positive contributing member to the White Sox 2011 team.

QUOTE (scenario @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 01:20 AM) The Sox would have to finish the season at or below .500 to end up in the top 15. That means going 2-11, or worse, in their final 13 games. Possible but highly unlikely. I wouldn't say have to finish at or below .500. Going 4-9 is certainly a possibility that puts the Sox are 83-79, and all 3 of Oakland, Florida, and New York can get relatively hot and finish above the Sox in the standings. I figure they'll probably end up with the 16th overall pick, which is a pretty terrible spot to be in.
-
It's going to be an interesting offseason. With the Sox already having a ton of money tied up into next year's payroll and an obviously flawed (but still talented) roster, the Sox are going to have several key decisions to make. I think guys you're looking to move are Quentin, possibly Teahen (though I think he could end up in RF next year too, as exciting as that sounds. The Sox need someone out there, and Teahen hasn't improvef his value this year), one of the starting pitchers, and obviously Linebrink.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 19, 2010 -> 10:32 PM) Maybe cause people enjoy watching their favorite baseball team that they dont get to see live very often??? The same reason I just yelled at the TV for AJs 9th inning groundout even though I live in Chicago and get to watch games daily. Even though the Sox got beat by the Twins this year doesn't mean that Sox fans can't still enjoy their favorite team. Seriously. In 2 weeks, we won't see the Sox play again until March.
-
Not that the White Sox will end up signing anybody anyways because of the insane amount of money already locked up for next season, but getting a top 15 pick would actually be advantageous so if a player who is a Type A free agent slips through the cracks, the Sox can sign him without giving up their first round pick. On top of that, losing the 2nd round pick would allot more money towards either that draft pick (though I'm not sure how much that would matter since the Sox don't go over slot anyways) or to allow the Sox to grab a few others who fall later in the draft.
