QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 11:37 PM) Ironic that Fernando Tatis also hit a grand slam today. where's Robin when you need him? btw, Lincecum eats children (first person to remember who said it first wins major nerd points, unless it is said person, in which case, nerd points are maxed out)

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 11:23 AM) Lack of strikeouts really hurt Buehrle's CyP. He's got a better ERA+ than both Beckett and Weaver and he still doesn't have a CyP rating. If Buehrle wanted a perfect game to go along with a Cy Young, he either better pitch like a man possessed and lead the Sox to a division title, or he picked the wrong year. Both Greinke and Felix have pitched far superior, and Beckett is damn near destined to pitch for a team that makes the playoffs (which I would imagine adds 12 to his CyP rating, as he helped lead his team to a playoff appearance, even if it's not technially a division title). If he puts up a 2005-esque 3.12 ERA - and he's close with a lot of time left, which is good and bad - and wins 8 or so games in the next 2 months, and leads the team to a division win, he's got a chance. He's only lost 3 times which helps him a hell of a lot. If he ends the year at roughly 19-5, 3.15 ERA with the Sox winning the division, I'd say he has a hell of a good chance, even if Greinke and Felix's ERA's end up south around or (well) below 2.75. Remember that in 07 Sabathia won it over Beckett even though Beckett won one more game and pitched for the media favorite Red Sox, mainly because he pitched more innings (Sabathia's K/9 that year was 7.8, much higher than Buehrle, but it's worth considering all the same). Same story actually happened in 2005 when several pitchers, including Buehrle, Garland, Santana, and Lee all pitched better or arguably better (better in Buehrle and Santana's case, arguably in Garland and Lee's case) than Bartolo Colon, but he won 21 games). I'm not going to do the math right now, but I would bet that the first 3 finished real close (guessing Santana-Buehrle-Garland in that order, which is also funny, since Cliff Lee finished higher than both Buehrle and Garland, even though the Sox won the division).

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 11:07 PM) I would understand if we were talking about someone good, but I don't see how a Brad Johnson type gives us a better chance to win than Hanie. "Good" and "backup QB" are not exactly synonymous. Of course, they could have signed the first big-time signing of the UFL, JP Losman, as their backup QB, and he'd pretty much be exactly what they were looking for. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to sign a training cap casualty to be the short-term backup QB who would only play if Cutler were out 1-4 games, only to try and manage the team to a win or two. If Cutler goes out for the year, that's when it would be wise to go with Hanie. A team to watch would be the Bucs, again, though they may be working under the same thought process I am thinking of - if McCown gets hurt for a little bit, go with Leftwich; if it's a long time, go with Freeman. Of course, if Freeman shows enough in training camp, Leftwich could either get cut or be a trade possibility. I will say that this post is mainly a post to back up what I was initially saying, but the Bears went 9-7 with Orton as the starter last year. He's decent, but nothing great, and they relied (probably too much) on Forte offensively and the defense last season. If Cutler's gone for 3-4 games, there's really no problem with Hanie starting, as Forte and the defense might pull out 1-2 of those games. Brad Johnson though honestly wouldn't be the worst idea, he's just not a good idea. He played in a pretty explosive passing offense in Dallas, and he is not that type of QB. That's just a QB not matching the offense, and it was an error on the Cowboys part. I honestly don't think he'd be a terrible addition, as the Bears offense seems to be pretty vanilla, and he would fit it OK as a backup, and he could give advice to Cutler and mentor Hanie. That's if he wants to play again. -

QUOTE (gatnom @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 01:44 AM) Our system may only have 5 or 6 big prospects, but you also have to remember that many of our players drafted out of high school can almost come out of nowhere in the future. Trayce Thompson (since it seems like he is going to sign), Steven Upchurch, Nevin Griffith, or any other young prospect that I don't know about may play themselves up into that "legit" prospect status, making our farm system potentially deeper than it may appear. All it takes is one good year. that, and a good scouting report. Right handed pitchers who top out at 87 can put up good numbers in Kannapolis; that doesn't mean they are going to be valuable.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 11:28 PM) I've said it before, and I'll say it again.... I'd do anything to get Ian Stewart on this team. Anything would include dealing Danks or Beckham. Obviously you aren't that serious, but I also doubt the Rockies are even remotely interested in dealing him, leading the Wild Card and all, without getting something seriously good in return.

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 01:03 AM) Inn 1-3 = 154 runs in 1254 PA 12.3% Inn 4-6 = 187 runs in 1288 PA 15% Inn 7-9 = 110 runs in 1149 PA 10% Which is completely logical. Relievers are good if they have ERAs under 3, great if they have ERAs under 2. Starters are good with ERAs under 4, great with ERAs under 3.

This thread lacks terrible nicknames in the subtitle. If Berman has made a career off of it, well than so can I. Buerhle vs "not quite a" Baker " 's dozen"

The craziest prediction I have is that Chris Getz is not a member of the organization on August 1st.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 10:43 PM) Plus, players who just got cut aren't very expensive to begin with. I still have no problem with having Hanie as the backup QB. As I've said before, if Cutler gets injured, I'd much rather see a young guy with some potential rather than an old washed up vet getting the playing time. what if he breaks his index finger and is out for 3 games? Then you'd also rather have the young guy with potential who is very likely to lose all 3 of those games because the receivers have suddenly gotten worse? -

QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 03:37 PM) They have Garcia and Russell. And Garcia is old and Russell hasn't shown a good work ethic. And it's not like Al Davis shies away from controversy; if anything, he is drawn to it. I could definitely see Davis signing Vick. -
hey weren't we just here like last week? Seems like it. I hate that damn stadium.

Mets VP challenges AA players to a fight

Reportedly either was or is going to be fired today. -
Sqwert, you've never actually covered the actual topic of hunting, only the killing of animals. To be frank, and hoping to avoid being too graphic while still getting the point across, a bullet to the brain or heart of a full grown deer will stop them almost immediately on spot; there is no pain nor suffering. That may be in-humane, as you say, but it's still a very necessary part of human development, right?

QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 01:32 PM) Despite that fact that he has never played LF... ever... at any level? And has a total of 23 career at-bats in the minors as a 1B? He's played his entire career as a catcher/DH. He's played 191 games in the minors as a catcher, 68 games as a DH, and 6 games at all other positions combined. Teams typically don't trade Cy Young award winning pitchers for 25 year old minor league DH's or guys who would have to learn a new position. If they can put up a .900 OPS they might. I haven't seen Clement do that, other than one season in AAA, but I would move someone like that for a fantastic young hitter. -

QUOTE (The Baconator @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 10:56 AM) I don't want to watch the paltry baseball that would be required leading up to this if we are in such a bad position in the standings that we make these moves. That would require a total collapse of all fundamentals. 3-17 doesn't sound good to you? -
QUOTE (jphat007 @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 11:50 AM) Needless to day, biggest game of the year. We just have to have it. Obviously 4 games back with 2 months to play is more than doable, but today is huge. 2 games opposed to 4 is monstrous

QUOTE (earthshiner @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 01:26 AM) just off the top of my head... One aspect of hunting is that it helps reduce overpopulation. Over population can increase the spread of diseases such as Chronic Wasting Disease. A disease such as this could have drastic effects on populations in the future. Also, it has the potential to be transmitted to livestock. Overpopulation also has a drastic effect on the ground cover in areas. This can affect many other creatures who then have to deal with less food, in turn, so will the deer and starvation takes place. In addition, a lack of ground cover can lead to erosion and effect the ground water and water ways of the area. These water ways became overrun with silt, sand, and gravel thus destroying natural spawning areas and habitats for fish, frogs and turtles. Also, as mentioned prior in this thread, there a millions of auto collisions with deer each year. For all these reasons, and more, if people like Dye, Buehrle, and others did not hunt, districts would have no choice but to hire sharpshooters to have to reduce the population levels. This costs money. All this costs money. Thats how he an be productive. I am not a hunter, but I am a Natural Resource major. And yet, by allowing the general public to purchase deer tags (and whatever other animals need to be cut down), the government not only does not SPEND money, but they actually MAKE money. No kidding.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 09:55 AM) Lee is the best player in the deal, then Kazmir. Brignac is the best prospect in the deal. It's the Seattle part that is stupid, I mean you don't get an arm like Kazmir for Morrow and Clement. That's just retarded. consider me hungover, because I am seeing part of this as serious, then part as sarcastic. Maybe alcohol has rotted my brain. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 11:49 AM) The Brewers should trade Escobar when his value is high. I've seen him play a handful of times, and he seems like nothing more than a weak hitting, slick fielding SS. You might as well trade for Caesar Izturis then. The Brewers only have a few more years left with the Fielder/Braun dynamic duo, so they really should go after Halladay. I won't make comparisons to either side, but if you could find a player with defense as good as Izturis or say, Omar Vizquel - or something similar - and get just a bit of offense to go with it (say .700 OPS), I'd personally say that's worth much more than JJ Hardy putting up 2-3 good months a year. Hell, if the Brewers wanted to be really risky, they'd deal Hardy, Parra, and some other solid prospect for Halladay, which equals less money in arbitration and more guaranteed contracts going into next year, and they'd go with Escobar at SS and they'd try and acquire a good offensive backup infielder who can play better defense than Felipe Lopez at 2B (so resign Ray Durham or activate Rickie Weeks) and go from there. If Macha's a good enough manager, he'd figure out ways to get all 3 good enough playing time up the middle. Of course, Hardy's two good months are coming. Agree completely with the second part. I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see Prince dealt this offseason to be honest).

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 09:50 AM) This trade seems to only make sense for the Rays. even though they might quite easily be giving up the two best players in the trade? really?
